Chairman’s
Welcome to the September edition of the Stage Write magazine. As I’m sitting here, pondering and writing my 2nd Chairman’s Foreword, it just strikes how fortunate we are to have such loyal and active volunteers. They keep the ‘Grand Old Lady Theatre’ open and ready to receive the many visitors that have, and will pass through our doors. There is a saying “Volunteers don't get paid, not because they're worthless, but because they're priceless.”
Since I last wrote to you, the FOST Committee have been busy working on organising our future volunteer events at external venues and at the theatre. Please pencil these dates in your diary: Coffee, Cake and Chat including a talk from the Ventnor Theatre Group, and Grand Prize DrawSaturday 3rd September 10am 12noon; Curry Evening 7th November 2022; Volunteers Thank You Evening 20th February 2023; and the Annual Garden Party 11th June 2023. We will of course give more details as the events are firmed up including times etc. In this edition, you will find Matt Day’s seasonal Crossword & Gwyn Dawson’s Quick Theatre Quiz. We have the second of Billie’s Blog from Billie Thornton, this time it’s about the mysterious goings-on ‘Backstage’.............. May I wish you a peaceful autumn. Take care and remember to be kind to each other. Best regards, Michael Beston FOST Chairman & Shanklin Theatre and Community Trustee. Stage Write magazine was originally founded in October 2010 by Ron Bird. I would like to personally thank Ron for his continued help & attention to detail in producing the September 2022 Stage Write magazine. This magazine was printed by the NHS Printing Services. Newport - Isle of Wight.
Whilst on the subject of treasured volunteers, it is with great sadness to report that our most senior male volunteer; Mr Roy Coleman passed away on the 23rd July. Roy’ s funeral was a simple graveside burial performed by a Celebrant that took place at the Woodland Cemetery in Newchurch on the 23rd of August for family members only. I know we all have fond memories of Roy and his wonderful sense of humour. Roy will be greatly missed I’ m sure, but he will always be in our hearts.

Hello and welcome to this edition of Stage ForWrite.those who don't know me, I am Lionel Whitehead the FOST vice-chairman.
I moved to the island with my wife Pat 6 years ago, from Cambridge where for the last fourteen years I was a porter at one of the colleges, and wanted to keep busy, so within a few months I was volunteering at this wonderful theatre as an usher. The passion and dedication of the volunteers was very quickly evident, as it was with the friends returning time and again for the wide variety of shows.
A short time ago I became a team leader of the ushers and have had wonderful support from them and also the volunteers in all the other departments. With the restructuring of the FOST committee I wanted to see if I could do more, so I applied for the vice chairman position, and was Afteraccepted.acouple of very difficult years we came back very well, with most of our re-scheduled shows now completed and next year already looking good, so a very big thank you from me to all volunteers and friends. I look forward to working with you and meeting you for a long time to come. Very best regards, Lionel.

Shanklin Theatre Supporting the Shanklin Main Carnival 2022
3rd August
13 | Page
Thank you very much to our dedicated group of 18 Volunteers who got involved with and supported the 2022 Shanklin Main Carnival. As you can see, they all looked rather dapper in their Theatre and bathing suit costumes. The hand embroidered ‘Wish You Were Here at Shanklin Theatre’ banner made by Liz Hinkes looked superb, being ceremonially carried and led by Eddy Parsons and Lionel Whitehead.
Thanks go to Peter Philips & Peter Haywood from the Vectis Historic Vehicle Club for stepping in at the last minute to supply a beautiful MG Roadster called ’Millie’ and a 1934 Leal two seater open top tourer to escort our Theatre Trustee Chairman Chris Quirk (the Shanklin Town Mayor)

I caught up with Shanklin Theatre’s Technical Manager, Chris Gardner and Stage manager, Rebecca Gardner and also Rachael Rogers from The Island Savoyards to enlighten me.
Billie’s Blog ‘Backstage’
When a contract is returned to the theatre, the production company will also send in a “Technical Rider”. This document will specify any equipment to be used, staff/crew requirements and a host of other information including approximate running times so that the theatre is aware of everything well in advance of the company’s arrival. Upon arrival at the theatre, the company are greeted and shown to dressing rooms before Chris then takes time with the company to work through lighting and sound requirements whilst Rebecca is placing any stage requirements, chairs, microphone stand etc and ensuring everything is Thesafe.show goes ahead under Chris and Rebecca’s eagle eyes, always ready to step in for any adjustments to staging or technical issues and then afterwards they spend time to clear and clean the stage.
We’ve probably all seen a show where we see someone from backstage bring on a chair or props and we all thank them at the end and we turn and thank “the Sound guy” but what are they really all doing behind the scenes?
Left ‘Chris trying to look hard at work in the nerve centre’ 2010.
Every show needs different requirements, so I started by asking Chris and Rebecca what is required from an easier show for example a one night comedian. Obviously they would need a microphone and some lighting. But there is so much more than we might think!
17 | Page

The Island Savoyards are an amateur company that began in 1971. They originally produced works of Gilbert and Sullivan so they chose the name after the Savoy Hotel where the original Gilbert & Sullivan operettas were staged. They have extended their repertoire and now produce two shows a year. They have a great rapport with Shanklin Theatre and Chris and Rebecca have a good relationship with them. They email each other and attend meetings with them to discuss any requirements and Chris and Rebecca’s wealth of experience will assist them to ensure a smooth and successful production.
Rachael is the Savoyards Production Manager and Stage Manager for their next production in October. She is firstly responsible for ensuring there is someone to source and manage costumes, props and the Set and gives timelines for what is expected. She also has to ensure there are enough crew members to help behind the scenes. Rachael attends rehearsals once a week and communicates between the Production team and the Committee to keep them informed for example of budget or set problems. Image above Rachael Rogers. Whilst rehearsals are under way for the cast, Rachael is busy at Production meetings liaising with her Head of Wardrobe and other staff and crew and chaperones to ensure everyone has everything they need.
On the day of ‘Get In’, a team loads the van of any set and staging and arrives at the theatre. Even before this, Rebecca has arranged for the front rows of seats in the auditorium to be removed ready for the orchestra and orchestra pit rails to be installed. Then Rebecca would advise where items should be placed so that she can arrange the backcloths on the correct bars and her experienced Stage Crew can fly these in and out.
18 | Page
The Savoyards committee first discuss which show they would like to produce and find an Artistic Director, Production manager, Stage manager, Choreographer and Musical director before they can even think of holding auditions for the cast!

The next day is a Technical Run when Chris sits with the Director and runs through all the lighting and sound requirements.
Each intelligent spot light may have 54 different channels to it. For example it can have soft focus, a Gobo or pattern to shine on the stage, a
Left - Chris & Rebecca painting the newly re laid stage floor covering in 2016. Rebecca ensures any set to be flown in and out has the correct wires and hanging irons and that everything is absolutely secure. Talking of Safety, this is a huge responsibility throughout the whole procedure and especially during a show but Rebecca confidently controls who is allowed on the stage and when. There is approximately 50 cast and Stage Crew in the next production and every member has to be kept safe. The rest of the staging is placed in the wings of the stage and Rachael has already plotted where these should go and in what order.
Chris says, “I remember when the lighting desk used to be 6 feet wide by 6 feet high and 32 channels to program the lights and these days it is the size of a briefcase but there’s so much more you can do with the lights now!
19 | Page
There are 23 flying bars at Shanklin that hold the backcloths, lighting and any other pieces of set that the show needs to be flown in. Rebecca says, “These all have to be correctly placed and safely hung. I need to work out how these can all be hung so that the audience cannot see them when they are raised.”
The Get In takes a whole day, well into the late hours. The Savoyards expect every cast member to help, with the exception of children who, for safety reasons, are not allowed near the stage at this point where equipment is being handled and ladders are being moved around.

For Rachael and her team, this is the time for them to work through moving the staging and set. Another long day…. Having said that, Rebecca will ensure everybody has a break during the day.
The following day is a Dress Rehearsal. Any tweaking of lighting and sound can be adjusted as they go and this all has to be noted.
The view from the rear of the stage looking towards Chris’s sound & lighting desk in the centre. Note the different array of lighting units. The stage at Shanklin Theatre is ‘raked’, meaning that it’s higher towards the rear of the stage and lower at the front. This enables a full view of stage performances and performers even when viewing from the rear of the auditorium. The auditorium floor is flat and level, which is quite rare for a theatre of this size. We can now begin to understand the work and hours required to get it right. Then Chris needs to work on all the microphones. There are 11 microphones at the theatre and all the Principals of the show need their own microphone but sometimes a show requires even more so these are hired in and these all have to be individually set at the correct frequency.
20 | Page different colour, a different effect etc. The current lighting desk controls 4 universes of 512 channels, a total of 2048 channels. There are approximately 150 lighting units in the rig using 1130 channels.”

Rebecca sits at the side of the stage at The Prompt Desk (image – right) where she follows the entire script. This is heavily jotted with notes of when and which backcloths need to be flown out and in so that she can advise the Fly Crew over headphones at the exact time required. Her script is very accurately written so that she knows exactly who should be on stage and where and when. She calls the cast to the stage at the appropriate time via a speaker to the dressing rooms. She leaves the lighting and sound to Chris but they are in
communicationconstantwith each other over headphones. This is when you will hear a whole new language! Words and phrases that their experienced backstage crew understand but it is a whole new vocabulary! They use words such as ‘Noiseboy’, ‘Phantom power’, ‘Fresnel’ and when we may think they are closing the ‘curtains’, they would be closing the ‘tabs’.
During the show
21 | Page
There are occasional problems during a show which Chris and Rebecca handle behind the scenes hopefully without the audience having any clue that there had been a problem. For example if a microphone has an issue, Chris liaises with Rebecca who then instructs Rachael to bring the cast member to her at an appropriate point in the show so that Rebecca can make the necessary adjustments and send them back on stage. Or if there is a problem with a costume, Rachael instructs her Wardrobe team who efficiently repair or adjust the costume between scenes.
The whole backstage is choreography in itself with ‘trucks’ and set being moved on and off the stage sometimes by Stage Crew dressed in a jacket or overalls in keeping with the costumes of the show.
Rachael says, “After the final show, each cast member is expected to stay and help with the ‘Get Out’. Firstly they clear their dressing rooms of their

The Island Savoyard’s next production is Guys and Dolls 27th-30th October 2022. Billie Thornton
Rebecca instructs the team to remove the set and staging and the cast helps to move the staging to their van or storage unit. The backcloths are flown in and dropped so that they can be untied from the bars and folded. When this is all done in the correct order, the company can load their van and return all the necessary equipment. Meanwhile, Chris will be unplugging and tying cables, boxing up microphones, Rebecca will be clearing and cleaning the entire stage and wings and the dressing rooms need to be cleaned ready for the next company. This really is such a small insight, barely scratching the surface into the work backstage. It cannot be underestimated the hours that are spent by Chris and Rebecca both in leading up to and during a show. Their days off are scheduled for when there are no shows but they use the time when there are no shows to do other necessary work, for example replacing new fly ropes or ensuring there are ample crew for future productions etc.
22 | Page costumes. When the orchestra has left, the cast can help to clear the orchestra pit of chairs so that this gives a clear area to work in”
The Island Savoyards are very grateful to them going over and beyond their Theatre duties. For Chris and Rebecca it is their passion. They have been at Shanklin Theatre for 35 years and their friendly approach to each show, together with their professionalism and expertise results in every show going as smoothly as possible for the enjoyment of the Company and the audience. So, next time you applaud the “Sound guy”, bear in mind that there’s a lot more going on than turning a microphone on and off! Image right ‘Chris at the office 2022’.

Until the 1950s the island boasted 55 miles of railway line. Of these the ‘main line’ from Ryde Pier Head to Ventnor was the busiest, also serving the principle holiday resorts of Sandown and Shanklin. At the other extreme, the rural lines to Freshwater and Ventnor West were never profitable and epitomise the sleepy country branch line.
