Chairman’s Foreword

Thank you for reading our March 2023 edition of the ‘Stage-Write’ magazine. I hope you find the content interesting, useful and informative. Whilst writing my chairman’s foreword, I’m reflecting on the Volunteer’s Evening that went ahead on 20th February (I will report more on this in the June edition). It still amazes me that the theatre has one of the biggest, if not the largest volunteering groups on the Island. The continual commitment given to the theatre by our volunteers is tremendous and humbling. On the evening we presented the 5 & 10 year long service badges to seventeen of our loyal volunteers, and I give thanks to all those involved in keeping our beloved theatre running for all to enjoy. It’s quite remarkable to think that we are nearing the 15 year mark since the theatre was saved from closure and demolition!

In this edition, we have another excellent Crossword from Matt Day, entitled ‘My Favourite Things’. Gwyn Dawson’s ‘A Quick (Springtime) theatre Quiz’, Billie’s Blog and the Arts & Crafts exhibition that took place on the 4th of February among other great things. It’s also half a century ago that the theatre was used for filming a scene in the ‘That’ll be the Day’ film starring David Essex; you’ll find this on page 7.

May I wish you a peaceful Easter and spring season. I look forward to presenting the June Stage Write to you in the summer. Take care, stay safe and remember to be kind to each other. Best regards, Michael.

Michael Beston – FOST Chairman & Shanklin Theatre and Community Trustee.

Stage-Write magazine was originally founded in October 2010 by Ron Bird. I would like to personally thank Ron for his continued help & attention to detail in producing the March 2023 Stage Write magazine. This magazine was printed by the NHS Printing Services. Newport - Isle of Wight.

FOST Vice Chairman – Lionel Whitehead

We can now stop worrying about the arrival of Santa! We know now if we were naughty or nice. (I think I must have been naughty). I hope you all had a wonderful time.

We can now turn our thoughts to the imminent arrival of the Easter bunny, but don't worry, I don't think he has a naughty or nice list!

Last year ended on a high as usual with a wonderful pantomime season, with full houses. Well done, and thank you to Spotlight.

This year’s shows have got off to a great start with Plays, Musicals and Music, with much more to come.

This spring we have music as diverse as Madam Butterfly to The E.L.O Experience, plays, and musicals such as The Calendar Girls and The Sound of Music. Surely something for everyone.

Avoid disappointment! Check out our website and book now. We look forward to seeing you all very soon.

Your continued support of the theatre is greatly appreciated. Without the support of our members and volunteers the theatre could not continue. Also, your feedback is always appreciated as this enables us to plan for the future.

And finally (cue large collective sigh!!) a mention for our maintenance team. During the dark month (January with no shows) our team had the floor at the front of the auditorium cleaned and sealed, work started on the new ladies’ toilets (sorry gents) as well as many other less noticeable jobs. Well done to our unsung heroes.

My warmest regards to you all, and see you soon.

Sir Martin White - Theatre Plaque

On the 4th of October 2022, Sir Martin White KCVO, CB, CBE, and Lady Fiona White were invited to see a plaque that has been dedicated to him in respect of the outstanding support he has given to Shanklin Theatre over the years. The plaque itself is now placed in the entrance foyer of the theatre for all to see. Afternoon tea and cakes were laid on by the theatre chairman, Vic Farrow. Also in attendance was theatre MD, David Kast, and Richard Priest.

Above - Sir Martin White & Lady Fiona White. The plaque reads:

‘In recognition of the support given to Shanklin Theatre

KCVO CB CBE

Whilst serving as Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight’

5 | Page

Sir Martin Spencer White is a senior British Army officer who served as Lord Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight from 2006 to 2019; Sir Martin had previously been Vice-Lieutenant since 1999, and stepped down as Lord Lieutenant in March 2019. He was commissioned into the Royal Army Service Corps in 1964 and, among other units, he commanded the Logistic Support Group between 1987 and 1989 and the Force Maintenance Area during the Gulf War (1990–91); he was Director of Support for the Allied Land Forces Central Europe from 1993 to 1995 (he was also promoted to Major-General in 1993), and Director-General of Logistic Support for the British Army from 1995 to 1998. He also served as Colonel Commandant of the Royal Logistic Corps from 1998 to 2009, and has worked in advisory roles for various private sector companies since 1999. In 1991, he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, and seven years later a Companion of the Order of the Bath; in the 2018 Birthday Honours he was also appointed a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order.

50 Years of ‘That’ll be the Day’

In 1972 during the filming of ‘That’ll Be the Day’, Shanklin Theatre became a star with its part in the film. In a scene filmed within the theatre, Jim MacLaine (David Essex) walks from the rear of the auditorium floor towards the stage, almost mesmerised by the sound of the band playing.

He turns to one of stage hands and asks - who is playing? ‘The Debonairs’ was the reply, he then eloquently moves closer to the stage whilst observing the young audience soaking up the vibes from the band.

In the background of the image below is a staircase which is still used in the theatre today that leads to the maintenance room. Some say it looks like a ‘Royal Box’, well of course it isn’t as there is no view of the stage from this area.

Apart from the colour of the walls and woodwork, the theatre auditorium has not changed its visual appearance at all since then.

7 | Page

Above – Jim MacLaine moves closer to the stage

That’ll Be the Day celebrates 50 years of its opening premiere day in the UK on Thursday 12th April 1973. Filming was completed on the Isle of Wight because the area still had a late-1950s look in the early 1970s. When filming started on the 23rd of October 1972, David Essex had a seven-week break from his Godspell role to film the picture.

That'll Be the Day is a British coming of age drama film directed by Claude Whatham, written by Ray Connolly, and starring David Essex, Rosemary Leach and Ringo Starr.

Set primarily in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the film tells the story of Jim MacLaine, a British teenager raised by his single parent (Leach). Jim rejects society's conventions and pursues a hedonistic and sexually loose lifestyle, harming others and damaging his close relationships in the process.

The cast also featured several prominent musicians who had lived through the era portrayed, including Starr, Billy Fury, Keith Moon, and John Hawken. The success of That'll Be the Day led to a sequel, Stardust, which followed the life of Jim MacLaine through the 1960s and 1970s.

Billie’s Blog – The Isle of Wight Music, Dance and Drama Festival

Shanklin Theatre is pleased to host many amazing shows but equally delighted to host the Isle of Wight Music Festival each year….

WHAT?!!!! No not THAT one!

I am referring to The Isle of Wight Music, Dance and Drama Festival – formerly The Isle of Wight Musical Competition Festival – that will celebrate its 93rd festival this year. There has been a festival every year since 1924, except for the war years.

The festival is a registered charity, and was established to advance, promote, and encourage generally, the arts of Music, Dancing, Elocution, Literature and Acting in all their branches.

History

It all began in September 1923 when a meeting attended by influential members of the music profession, resolved to institute an Isle of Wight Festival. The aim was to act as an incentive to higher standards of performance and musical appreciation on the Island. H.R.H Princess Beatrice, the then Governor of the Isle of Wight, agreed to give her patronage to the festival. For the initial Festival, The British Federation of Musical Festivals contributed £40, and supporters raised a further £80.

In 1925 there were 725 entries into fifty-eight classes. By comparison, in 2018 there were 1862 entries into 376 classes. In 1925 all the classes were in Ryde Town Hall, held over just four days! Now four venues are used in three towns over a three-week period.

The Present

The festival, the only one of its kind on the Island, provides an opportunity for public performance of a wide range of disciplines with constructive feedback from professional, internationally recognised, adjudicators designed to encourage participants to improve and to achieve their best. Performing in front of an audience helps to improve performers’ general confidence, especially the young.

12 | Page

All classes are judged by paid professional national and international adjudicators who have been assessed and approved by the British and International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance and Speech. All performers are given a written assessment of their performance by the Adjudicator.

Some excel and go on to careers in the performing arts; several are currently performing in the West End. In fact, the award-winning film director, Anthony Minghella first gained his love for the theatre while taking part in the festival.

The festival is open to any performer of any age. There are children as young as three and adults in their eighties taking part. The fact that the festival has been successful for so many years, and that there are regularly around 2,000 entries, several being children and grandchildren of past competitors, demonstrates that there continues to be a demand for this Festival.

Part of the reason for the survival is that they adapt and bring in new classes as needed. It is important to give those taking part the correct environment in which to perform so all the Speech and Drama sessions are held in a hall with a stage and most of the music sessions are held in All Saints Church Ryde, which has excellent acoustics. The “Rock and Pop” classes are held in Shanklin Theatre with its professional sound engineer and system. All the Dance sessions are also held in Shanklin Theatre giving the dancers a large stage with theatre lighting. The Dance adjudicator and their assistant are positioned on a specially constructed raised podium in the stalls section of the theatre to give them a full view of the dancers.

Classes

There are classes in speech, drama, vocal and instrumental music for individuals and groups, ranging from classical to pop and rock and the dance section which is popular with mainland and Island entrants alike and includes ballet, tap and modern classes.

13 | Page
Image right - Anthony Minghella, CBE

Advice is given to help to develop a higher standard of amateur public performance. For example, the choice of clothing to wear, tuning instruments prior to the class, announcing your performance title etc. Winners are announced after each class and every competitor receives a certificate and a Remark Sheet with constructive comments from the adjudicator. Some trophies are awarded that the competitor can keep for a year and have their name engraved.

Awards

The Isle of Wight Festival was honoured in 2020 to receive The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK. The Award, created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, aims to recognise outstanding work by volunteer groups to benefit their local communities.

Acknowledgements

The festival is indebted to Shanklin Theatre and the support from Technicians, Front of House Staff, and the Catering Team to name just a few.

The building is used for long hours and needs to be opened early for dancers to get prepared and dressed, some that have travelled from the mainland.

Apart from the adjudicator, the festival is run entirely by volunteers – and a huge number of them too! There are those that schedule the classes, produce the syllabus, certificate writers, announcers, welcome desk, ushers and assistants throughout and those at the Theatre are kindly kept fed and watered by the Shanklin Theatre’s efficient catering team.

If you would like to pop into the Theatre and see the Music, Pop and Rock on 12th March or The Dancing from 18th to 25th March, entry is this year by donation at the door.
