A new departure for us this year is the film ‘Calendar Girls’ which we are showing on FRIDAY 7TH JUNE in All Saints Church Hall in preparation for the talk

The story of the Alternative WI Calendar Tricia is the originator and driving force behind the alternative WI calendar that continues to be a global phenomenon, raising almost £5 million in the fight against blood cancer.

Not many people can say they have been played on screen by Dame Helen Mirren and on stage by everyone from Linda Bellingham to Anita Dobson!

We are thrilled that Tricia agreed to travel from Yorkshire to appear at our festival and will be showing the film ‘Calendar Girls’ on Friday 7th June as a lead up to her talk on Saturday.

Tickets for both events are sure to be in short supply, so book early!!

Andrew Radd

Bernie and Andrew in Conversation

Bernie Keith and Andrew Radd have shared a studio (along with Bernie’s faithful schnauzer, Riley) at BBC Radio Northampton for a decade-and-a-bit, Bernie hosting his hugely entertaining mid-morning show and Andrew ensuring listeners aren’t enjoying themselves too much by reading the news bulletins.

Bernie is now the longest-serving presenter at that time of day in the whole of BBC local radio, having joined the station in 2000.

Andrew, meanwhile, has been haunting Radio Northampton’s corridors since 1984, working on sport and programme presentation as well as news.

Although Bernie hails originally from Northolt in what used to be Middlesex he was long-since officially ‘adopted’ as a Northamptonian. Andrew was born in the Barratt Maternity Home and has preferred not to venture too far from it.

Musically, Bernie is King of Rock and Roll while Andrew keeps it classical. But as near-contemporaries – both born at the back end of the Harold Macmillan years – they agree to compromise on Matt Monro, Petula Clark and The Carpenters.

Away from the BBC, Bernie has carved out a successful career in stand-up comedy, selling out venues and appearing at the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe. Andrew’s love of cricket (not shared by Bernie, alas!) has produced five books and umpteen-thousand articles to date. He is also Northamptonshire CCC’s archivist.

What they’ll talk about at the Earls Barton Literary Festival is anyone’s guess. This and that, probably. But not the other.

William Blake (1757-1827) has been dubbed the greatest of the English rebel poets. We join him in 1824 on a regular walk from Hampstead Heath to his home in the Strand after spending a day with his friend, the artist John Linnell.

On this walk Blake considers the question of ‘Building a New Jerusalem’; his answer measured by his opinions and belief in the power of Creativity.

Come and meet Boss in Boots. Steve Pateman tells his own story of how he became the original Charlie Price. Steve takes us right back from his struggles as a local factory owner in Earls Barton, through the ups and downs, all the way to when his courageous (or even crazy!) idea ended up being the beginning of the KINKY BOOTS empire that exists today.

His Fearful Symmetry

Robin Hillman is William Blake in the one-man show ‘Fearful Symmetry’. Robin has appeared twice at this Festival; as John Clare and the fictional comedian Jack Luck, both in plays written (like this one) by Stephen Loveless.

What Ho! PG Wodehouse Society member and enthusiast, Michael Chacksfield, will be talking about England’s finest comic writer of the 20th Century.

Plum’s dedication to the craft of writing has produced a verbal stew of English and American slang, literary allusions, needless abbreviations, mixed metaphors and fussily precise details. His appealing Jeeves and Wooster stories contrast with his appalling treatment by the establishment at the end of WWII. But ‘Wodehouse’s idyllic world can never stale’ and as an aspiring author, Michael will offer refreshment from a writer who remains as funny and relevant today as ever.

Michael Kushner is a guide and lecturer at Bletchley Park, the British government's World War Two ultra-top secret code breaking establishment in Buckinghamshire. Before volunteering at Bletchley Park, Michael worked for 20 years for Thorn EMI in the consumer electronics industry.

Sue Moorcroft is a Sunday Times and international bestselling author and has reached the coveted #1 spot on Amazon Kindle. She’s won the Readers’ Best Romantic Novel award, the Katie Fforde Bursary and was twice nominated in the Romantic Novel of the Year Awards.

Sue’s novels of love and life are currently released by publishing giant HarperCollins Michael in the UK, US and Canada and an array of publishers in other countries.

Anne Usher MBE is a Gold medal winning Paralympian.

Spies, lies and double agents

He has a keen interest in historic military communications. When the Bletchley Park Trust was formed, Michael was living close by and wanted to get involved. He studied the history of code breaking, as more of the Top Secret information was now being released.

In 2004 he trained as a volunteer guide at Bletchley Park. Michael is a competent public speaker, giving lectures on World War Two signals intelligence on board Cunard and P & O ships, as well as across the country for many societies and organisations.

Her short stories, serials, columns, writing ‘how to’ and courses have also appeared around the world.

Born into an army family in Germany, Sue spent much of her childhood in Cyprus and Malta but settled in Northamptonshire at the age of ten. Reading takes up much of her leisure time but she also loves Formula 1, time spent with friends, dance exercise and yoga.

My Journey to Double Paralympic Gold

As well as winning gold for paracanoeing at the Rio Paralympics she has won two World Championship and three European Championship gold medals since she started competing for Great Britain in 2013.

This feat is remarkable as the first time she sat in a boat was aged 46. She had been an able bodied ultra endurance mountain biker which she started at 32 to get fit.

Her story of her life changing injury and how she turned her life around to become a Paralympic gold medalist in Rio in just 4 years is an incredible tale.

Anne's aim is to encourage people to believe that no matter what challenges are faced, change is always possible and that anyone can be the best that they can be.

‘A pint of history in your hand’ the story of Phipps Brewery

Alaric grew up in Rushden where his paternal family was in the shoe trade, while his maternal grandfather had worked at Praeds Brewery, Wellingborough. After studying Fine Art at Nene College Northampton and then Leeds University, his first job was with Northants County Archaeology Dept, cementing his lifelong love of local history.

The music industry soon lured him away and over the next 28 years he progressed from being a performer, then songwriter, recording engineer, record producer, record label boss, promoter, lecturer and touring live sound engineer.

Why Sugar Scuttles? At one level, these are jolly artefacts, to be enjoyed as such. At another, they show how volume manufacture need not inhibit variety. At a third, they illustrate how almost any product has a lifetime and how innovation often contains the seeds of its own demise.

Graham has a passion for helping people to realise their potential. He studied engineering at Leeds University but moved into management at the tender age of 25. At the same time, he was asked to be one of four “elders” of a new church in Rugby focusing on supporting young people.

In 1986, Graham moved to Cranfield School of Management to teach Operations Management but this expanded to Change Leadership and Personal Development. He has trained as a psychotherapist and executive coach. He is now a Visiting Fellow at Cranfield and very involved with Samaritans as a listening volunteer and a member of the training team. He is the co-author of three books on Service Management and Customer Service and is in the process of writing an autobiography/leadership book called “More than Good Enough”.

Geoffrey qualified as an electrical fitter in the RAF, before reading Natural Sciences and Physics at Cambridge. A graduate apprenticeship followed and deep involvement in fields as diverse as Automatic Landing for Aircraft, Ultrasonic Scanning and the invention and development of Automatic Teller Machines (ATM)

In 2008, along with brother Quentin, Alaric was responsible for reviving the much missed beer Phipps IPA. In 2014 he restored the 1884 Albion Brewery and brought all Phipps production back to the county.

Whilst employed as a civil servant at the Design Council, Geoffrey took early retirement and established an international consultancy. He has served as the Chairman of a Limited Company, qualified as a plumber and, self-built a house.

Festival within our Festival

Mike Richards, is Chair of Northants Writers’ Ink and the Northampton Literature Group; leading its Writing Circle. He is a judge of the H E Bates Short Story Competition. Together with Pat Aitcheson, Monica Withrington, Deborah Bromley and Rosemary Sturge, he will be running a whole weekend of workshops, aimed at helping aspiring authors with different aspects of their craft.

Visitors can choose which of the workshops they feel would be of most use to them and gain from the experience of these authors.

Workshops will be held in All Saints Church Hall on Saturday and in the Youth Club, Harrowick Lane on Sunday.

Mike Richards

Michael J. Richards chairs Northants Writers’ Ink and the Northampton Literature Group, also leading its Writing Circle. He is Treasurer of Northants Authors, Deputy Chair of Northampton Writers Group and a judge of the H E Bates Short Story Competition.

He has published a horror novel, Afterwards Our Buildings Shape Us; a collection of horror stories, Bodies for Sale!; a true-life biography of an East End criminal, Frank Peters: His Life, Times and Crimes; a collection of stories about men, Speaking Man to Man. He has edited four anthologies for Northants Writers’ Ink and one for Northampton Literature Group.

He is currently writing a novel about the New York Mafia.

Pat Aitcheson

Pat Aitcheson lives in Earls Barton. Her fiction, poetry and non-fiction appears at 2squarewriting.com, several anthologies, and online publications. She won first prize in the 2016 HE Bates Short Story Contest and contributes monthly to Barton Today.

Starting out as a published writer of short stories, Monica Withrington turned to the younger market and currently has three children’s books in print. She hopes to inspire others who are thinking of writing for this genre.

Deborah Bromley is a clinical hypnotherapist and past life specialist who loves to incorporate spiritual experiences into her paranormal fiction.

Jayne Osborn

The Magic of Poetry

Jayne Osborn is an awardwinning published poet, well known for her sense of humour which permeates her work, along with serious topics. Her poems have regularly appeared in The Spectator and The Oldie magazines, many anthologies and online journals.

Jayne’s view is in accordance with the late Auberon Waugh, former editor of The Literary Review, who asserted that poetry ‘’must rhyme, scan and make sense’’. OK, it doesn’t have to rhyme… but it’s great when it does - and Jayne’s always does!

Having a particular passion for poetry and precision (not to mention alliteration) Jayne is also a keen amateur magician, the only female member of the Northampton Magicians Club. She enjoys combining the magic of poetry with the mystery of magic tricks, making her talks entertaining …and full of surprises!

Charles Bennett The Blue Field: windgathers, floods & watersheds

Even if you feel that poetry is ‘not for you’ – come to hear this poet! We are sure you will be won over. Charles Bennett has visited our festival before and we are thrilled that he has accepted another invitation to read his work to us. He is a highlyregarded, prize-winning poet whose work has been published to wide acclaim in Europe and America. He teaches and supervises at undergraduate and postgraduate levels at the University of Northampton.

He has published eleven poetry collections.

His two latest, Cloud River and Thaw will feature in this year’s festival as he embraces our theme of seas, shorelines, rivers, lakes and canals in our environment.

His previous collections are Evenlode, How to Make a Woman out of Water and Wintergreen.

James Vollmar

Poetry and Prose from River and Shore

James Vollmar reads excerpts from his memoir Juke Box Karma as well as new work, and poetry from the collection Peacetime which covers forty years of publication.

James began his writing career as a poet before concentrating mainly on drama. His theatre work includes a community play, The Kingdom of the Rose, for his home town Higham Ferrers, and plays for Eastern Angles, Forest Forge and Sir Alan Ayckbourn’s theatre in Scarborough. His film scripts include the shorts Timetable and Bittersweet and the documentary Shore Leave about celebrated Bermudan actor Earl Cameron. He is also the author of a memoir Juke Box Karma and a comprehensive selection of his poetry is available under the title Peacetime.

Jane is author of seven novels. Her latest series is based in Northamptonshire and features DC Beth Chamberlain, a Family Liaison Officer, and launched last year with After He’s Gone and Presumed Guilty. The third DC Beth Chamberlain novel will be released in 2019.

Sara was not discouraged by her family soon enough and has spent the last 20 years faffing about in the dark as a Stage Manager. Her career began in Panto at Greenwich Theatre, where she regularly had to sew the udders back onto Daisy the cow! Within only a couple of years Sara had progressed to touring with Christopher Timothy, an experienced ‘actor vet’ so no further animals were injured.

Her career has taken her around the UK, several times, and overseas. Currently as the Company Stage Manager for The Royal and Derngate Theatre she has worked on Our Lady of Kibeho, The Worst Witch and The Lovely Bones. Her role changes daily according to the needs of the production.

She lectures in Stage Management at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

Starting out as a teacher, Tom discovered a love of the spoken word and storytelling in particular. Over the last 11 years of his professional storytelling career, he has performed to all ages, from 4 to 94 at festivals, groups, in schools, at storytelling clubs and around campfires.

Carry Akroyd is a painterprintmaker and occasional illustrator living in Northamptonshire.

Appreciating the unspectacular has given Carry a sympathetic connection to nineteenth century poet John Clare, a ‘ditch visionary’, whose writing has been a continuing source of inspiration. Many of her landscape images echo Clare’s poetry in observing of how man affects nature, two hundred years ago and now.

After 20 years of making and exhibiting images relating to the poetry of John Clare, in 2016 Carry was invited to be President of the John Clare Society.

The Lost Art of Storytelling

Tom has written stories for most of his adult life and, with the success of his storytelling career and a string of well-received articles for the website 'Folklore Thursday', he was asked to write 'Leicestershire Folk Tales for Children' in 2018 for The History Press. Off the back of this, he has written a second book, 'Forest Folk Tales for Children' due out in July 2019.

Mark Carey Into the Breach

Into the Breach was so incredibly well received last year that we decided to ask Mark back to perform this amazing one man show again. Those of us who saw it want to see it again and anyone who missed it will want the chance to catch up!!

Brought up in Exeter Mark decided he wanted to be an actor when working on The Onedin Line for the BBC, when he was thirteen.

In 1979 Mark played the boy in Henry V for Richard Digby Day at the Northcott Theatre

For the next fifteen years Mark worked in Rep’ all over the country but mainly in Northampton where he appeared in over thirty plays. Here he met his wife Cecilia and played panto’ Dame four times, these two facts however may not be related!

He has performed in many different TV and Radio series and appeared regularly at the Bridge House Theatre in Warwick.

Into the Breach has been touring since November 2013.
