It’s Never Too Late for a Fresh Start! college campus for the first time; new friends, lots of activities, and finding a new social circle they didn’t even know they missed.

For our team members Friendship Haven is a learning organization, one that promotes from within and also welcomes new team members like our new Vice President of Health Services, Kim Schilling. You will read about Kim in this newsletter. And while Kim comes to us with over 20 years’ experience in our field, she has let us know she’s ready for a fresh start and excited to learn, especially as it relates to our approach to leadership.

The success of any organization is truly measured by how we create new beginnings, honor the past and look toward the future. In this season of spring we want to remind everyone that it’s never too late for a fresh start.

Whether you live here or even if the thought of living here someday is in the back of your mind. Friendship Haven might just be the new beginning you’ve been looking for.

And, speaking of new beginnings, we have an important announcement to share with you! If you have had the opportunity to attend our annual Legends Tailgate (held every year since 2009), you know that we know how to throw a party! But after 10 years, we decided to shake things up and give our annual fundraiser for our Good Samaritan Fund a new look, a new feel, and a NEW NAME! But we don’t want to give away all the details!

Hilltop Fest will be held on Friday, August 2, from 6:00 to 10:00 pm. While it will still be held on the Friendship Haven campus, it is a totally new event. So, mark your calendars, and we will see you there!

Spring is in the air. This time of the year brings us all fresh perspectives and reminds us of new beginnings. This is certainly true at Friendship Haven. As I think back to 1999 (the year I began my Friendship Haven career), I remember the newness and excitement of working for such an innovative organization. Now 20 years later, I get the privilege of working with new and growing employees and seeing the excitement in their eyes as they take on new professional and personal challenges.

Whether it is Bryan, our Information Technology team member who is navigating the new world of parenthood (to twins no less) or Anne, a career certified nursing assistant, who is learning leadership skills as she becomes a caregiver mentor, newness is all around us. It reminds us all that there are firsts for everyone, and we celebrate and share in the nervousness right along with them. With age comes experience and a reassurance that everything will be all right.

It may seem ironic to have a retirement community be a place that reminds us of fresh starts, but in many ways, it makes great sense. For some residents, moving to our campus is just like moving to a

When Kim Schilling learned that Friendship Haven was looking for an Administrator/VP of Health Services, she thought this might be a good time to give her career a fresh start! After touring Friendship Haven and visiting with Julie Thorson and other campus leaders, she felt like this truly could be home for her. However, this potential change would not only impact her, but also her husband, Brett, and their 8-year-old son, Liam.

After some soul searching and lengthy conversations with her family, the decision was made for her to pursue this position (which was recently vacated by Brett Asay). She began her career as Friendship Haven’s Administrator/VP on March 25.

Kim has a Bachelor of Arts from Wartburg College and a Masters in Business Administration from St. Ambrose University. Along with her education, she comes to Friendship Haven with a lot of meaningful experience, having been a key leader with Western Homes in Cedar Falls for the past 18 years. Most recently she served as the licensed nursing home administrator at Creekside Cottages (a Western Home community). She also has certification in assisted living management.

Kim has jumped into her new position with both feet, overseeing the Simpson Health Center, The Gardens and River Ridge Assisted Living neighborhoods, Trilogy Therapy, and Schmoker Adult Day Services.

By: Denise Halverson Spring is a time of renewal; an opportunity to begin again. So, it seems most fitting that at that time of year we celebrate those individuals who share their time with us through their volunteering efforts. Whether welcoming visitors to our campus, helping residents get to their therapy sessions, assisting with the distribution of communion during church services, or the many other opportunities available on our campus, our volunteers provide that extra bit of sunshine, sometimes through the clouds.

We can always count on them to provide that little something extra that brings a smile to the faces of not only our residents, but our employees as well. The energy and enthusiasm displayed by our volunteers is seen and felt throughout the campus.

On one particularly cloudy spring day, Ray Scharf, one of more than 200 campus volunteers, stopped by Julie Thorson’s office to spread a little volunteer cheer. While this may seem like a quick, meaningless visit it was much, much more. It was a reminder that all things will be okay. Just like the four wonderful seasons of Iowa, volunteers are the “spring” of seasons for Friendship Haven - a constant reminder the sun will also shine and we also have time to begin again.

We believe giving back renews the soul. Volunteering is just one of the amazing ways community members and residents choose to give back to our campus. They continue to make our campus shine. We are eternally grateful.

You only went to the store for flour, sugar and coffee.” Maris remembers his father having a large orchard where he grew fruits to make wine, a skill that Maris perfected as well, and even passed down to his grandson who makes his own beer.

Maris returned to the farm in 1947 after graduating high school. He and Joan were married in 1956 and Joan became an important part of the operation. “She was 50 percent of the

Joan and Maris firmly believe that it isn’t “things,” that bring you joy in life, but rather people. To see their growing family continue to operate the farm and have grandchildren raise their own children in that way of life is a true blessing for the couple.

Farm to Next Generation ways to bring that life into Friendship Haven. Both Joan and Maris enjoy spending time in their plot in the community garden. They can be found many spring and summer days outside tending to their vegetables. They also find joy in being able to see their grandson’s wife, Andrea Doster, almost every day who serves as a Wellness Assistant on campus. Like they said, “It’s our faith, family and friends that bring us joy, not the ‘things.’ ” Joan and Maris have been Friendship Haven residents for nine years. They stay active on campus, participating in multiple wellness classes, clubs and organizations and have taken trips with the travel club. They are also active members of Good Shepard Lutheran Church.

Spring Back

with Trilogy Therapy

Friendship Haven offers a multitude of amenities on our campus, some more glamorous than others, but all serve an important purpose whether it be for residents, our employee team, family members or the community at large. One of those amenities that can be utilized by more than just our residents is our in-house therapy department, Trilogy Therapy.

Trilogy Therapy is client-centered, outcome-oriented and available for physical, occupational and speech therapy. Whether it be a planned event such as a knee replacement, or something unexpected like an illness, the Trilogy Therapy team is here to help you spring back to doing what you love.

Our therapy department is unique because we not only provide out-patient therapy, we also work with Catalyst, our transitional neighborhood, to provide in-patient therapy to those needing a little extra assistance before returning home. Many of our inpatient participants come back to us for out-patient therapy once they return home.

Recently, we sat down with Trilogy Therapy Director, Tori Johnson, to talk about her therapy department and shed a little light on such a great service we have on campus. “Friendship Haven’s vision statement is, ‘People living full lives with faith, passion and purpose.’ Our therapy team is always working towards getting our participants back to doing just that, living full, independent lives doing what they love,” says Tori. “I think there are a few misconceptions about Trilogy Therapy. Although we specialize in geriatric therapy, we do welcome all adult-aged therapy needs. This also means you don’t have to be a resident to choose Trilogy Therapy.”

The therapy department is also the sole-provider for warm water aquatic therapy in the area. Not only can participants take full advantage of the therapy gym, they can also stay inside and enjoy the pool to help them get back to living their full lives. Whatever the case may be, the therapy team will continuously assess and reassess participants’ needs, progress, and abilities and make a treatment plan that is best suited to the individual. “I am very proud to work alongside such an outstanding team,” stated Tori.

“I receive many positive comments from our participants on how our team takes a not so pleasant time in their lives and makes it enjoyable and keep them moving forward and making progress.”

Whatever the case may be that leads you or your loved one to needing therapy, we encourage you to come in and see our therapy gym, meet our team and decide if this is the best place for you. Of course we hope it is, and we hope you spring back to living full lives with faith, passion and purpose with the help of Trilogy Therapy.

“Not What I had Planned”

An unexpected diagnosis brought Jim Jorgensen to Trilogy Therapy 2018 brought a major road bump in the lives of Jim and Kamma Jorgensen and their family. In June, Jim was diagnosed with Chondrosarcoma, a rare bone cancer that does not respond to chemo or radiation, and the only form of treatment is removing the bone. There is currently only one doctor in the state of Iowa who will perform the surgery to remove the bone.

On June 5, 2018, Jim went in for surgery, and they removed a ten-pound, 21-inch long tumor around his bone. With it, they removed his hip joint, femur, and knee joint and replaced them with prosthetics. After a few weeks in the hospital, he was able to come to Friendship Haven, staying in Catalyst and beginning rehabilitation therapy with the Trilogy team. There were a few setbacks along the way, but Jim was able to heal and learn how to walk again with a new hip, femur and knee.

Finally, in September, Jim was able to return to his home for good. He and Kamma are not residents of Friendship Haven and have lived in the Fort Dodge community their entire lives. After a few modifications were made, Jim could successfully navigate his home and continue therapy on an out-patient basis. “When I first began therapy after surgery, I couldn’t even stand or walk using the parallel bars

in the gym, and today I am working on mastering steps,” explained Jim. “It has been a long, unexpected road but Lori, my therapist, has been great and always challenging me to do more. The machines and all they have to offer in the gym have given me different treatment options.” Jim’s wife Kamma added, “Jim isn’t always the easiest person to take care of (said with a grin), but from the aides and nurses in Catalyst to the entire therapy, team everyone has been so helpful, stepped in when needed and have helped Jim get to where he is today. We are very grateful.”

Before being diagnosed with cancer, Jim was retired from owning and operating Jim’s Texaco, formerly a filling station and mechanic shop on 15th street. He was spending his retired remodeling homes and was working on two by himself prior to surgery. When asked what he hopes to get back to doing, Jim replied, “Normal life! I know Kamma wants to get our home back in order and I want to get back to working on my house projects. I know I am getting a little closer every day.”

Jim and Kamma had four children, they have eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Kamma always joins Jim for therapy so she can keep up-to-date on what he is working on and be there to learn new ways to help take care of him and his needs. Jim’s entire family is so proud of him and his positive attitude he has kept through it all, and we hope to see Jim back to fixing up houses before too long.
