FRIENDSHIP HAVEN ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES MARCH 2, 2020 Present: Ken Seversen, Ken Selander, Dick Anderson, Nedra Conrad, Roy Dillon, Betty Hartquist, Bev Martin, Glen Thompson, Johnna Friesth, Bonnie Proeschold and Mona Becker.

Staff: Jennifer Owen, Deb Gray, Kalleen Engels, Denise Halverson, Kelly Hindman, Kim Schilling and Rollie Peterson.

Jennifer opened the meeting with prayer. The February minutes were approved. There was no old business.

River Ridge: A recent dining committee was held which was appreciated and they will again meet monthly. Apartment vacancies were noted.

ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES NEIGHBORHOOD REPORTS CONTINUED

Simpson Health Center: A water heater was down for a few days. Staff are doing a great job.

Gardens: The Gardens 300 spa/whirlpool room has been renovated.

Residents have recovered from bouts with the flu. Wellness staff coordinated an event with young students at St. Edmond which was enjoyed. A new young caregiver is doing a great job.

Friendship Circle/Timber Ridge: A concern was voiced about windows with moisture resulting in mildew. Praise was shared for staff accommodations in making the Celebration Center available for events.

Kenyon Place: A concern was voiced about a Catalyst resident and call light response; however, care in general is excellent. Kim Schilling reported that Catalyst is staffed appropriately but there is a very full census at this time. The concern will be further explored. Another resident voiced praise for the Catalyst service. Resident discussion has occurred about any future plans for Kenyon Place window and siding replacement. Residents appreciate the service provided by Kelsey Beck. Appreciation was voiced for the recent Ash Wednesday service.

One apartment was without water to a shower due to an adjacent apartment being remodeled.

Hilltop Road: No concerns were reported.

STAFF REPORTS Jennifer Owen: Later this month, Catholic mass will be limited due to Father Jim’s absence. A Lenten prayer rosary has been scheduled. See Sharon Hickey for details. A supplemental devotional for lent is available.

A study on Revelation will be forthcoming. It was discussed how recent resident deaths affect many.

ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES STAFF REPORTS CONTINUED Kelly Hindman: Friendship Haven is receiving coronavirus updates from the Iowa Department of Public Health. Hand washing and staying home when ill was encouraged. A sprinkler repair project will occur in Kenyon Place.

An air conditioning unit will be installed in the River Ridge kitchen.

Denise Halverson: A personal trip to Hawaii was enjoyed. From a personal standpoint, appreciation for the Friendship Haven continuum of care was shared along with a great partnership with Hospice.

Rollie Peterson: An update on the pending U.S. census was given. The Retired Webster County School Personnel are having their lunch meeting at the Celebration Center today. Caution about recent scams was shared. A new channel is carrying the Chicago Cubs. It is 67.14 and you may need to auto tune your television to receive it. ESPNU is not available in apartments unless you upgrade to a sports package; however, it can be viewed in the library on Direct TV. Deb Gray: The independent living census is strong while assisted living has vacancies.

MARCH 9, 2020

Kenny Selander called the meeting to order, followed by an opening prayer from Pastor Jennifer. The program featured Tori Johnson, head of Trilogy Therapy, and Kourtney Condon, a member of the wellness team. The two gave a presentation on Rock Steady Boxing, which is a program that focuses on people with a Parkinson’s diagnosis to promote independence all while doing a fun workout. Tori and Kourtney attended a training in Miami, Florida, at the end of January where they became certified coaches of Rock Steady Boxing.

The program has different levels to accommodate to people’s needs based on an evaluation. Tori and Kourtney hope to have a program in place this summer that will be open to residents and community members. They are currently working on program development and getting equipment. If you have any interest in donating for equipment or volunteering please see Denise Halverson. If you have any questions please contact Tori or Kourtney.

STAFF REPORTS Jennifer Owen: Reminder that Fr. Tigges will be on a cruise. There will be no Catholic mass until he returns on March 23. Sharon Hickey will be providing Rosary in the meantime.

Starting tonight, Monday, March 9, there will be a Revelation Bible Study in the Celebration Center at 6:00 p.m. There will be sign-up sheets for Easter flowers with Pastor Jennifer. Pastor Jennifer encouraged everyone to keep residents and staff in mind with the amount of passing’s happening on campus. Please reach out to Pastor Jennifer if you are feeling the need to talk to someone.

Kim Schilling: Kim addressed the concerns of the Coronavirus and explained that Friendship Haven is participating in webinars and doing our best to stay informed. There is a meeting in place to address the possibility of an outbreak.

Kim gave a reminder that if you don’t feel well please stay home.

STAFF REPORTS

Andrea Doster: Just a refresher that wellness classes are Monday- Friday mainly in the mornings. There is an updated class calendar outside the wellness office. Staff and residents are able to use the equipment anytime of the day or night. If you need assistance with the equipment, please see wellness. The wellness center has around 80-100 community members that pay a monthly fee. There are about 10-20 who pay a drop-in fee to use the wellness center. A reminder that your senior fitness test will be done every 6 months. Wellness class participants at least maintain their fitness test scores, so there is a benefit to coming to class. The wellness team is open to suggestions for new programs/classes.

Kelly Hindman: The spa in Gardens 300 has been remodeled and is ready for use. Some upcoming projects include: updating the sprinkler system, new air conditioners in the River Ridge kitchen, and new tables and chairs in the Gardens. A reminder was given to be careful walking outside. A concern about the vents not being cleaned was addressed.

Julie Thorson: Julie gave an update for Kalleen Engels. The audit was done last week and the team is preparing a final report to present to the board in their April meeting. Julie also gave an update on Rollie’s health.

The U.S. census will begin in the spring. Town Home, Kenyon Place, and River Ridge residents will be receiving a questionnaire in the mail. If you need assistance please reach out to staff. The census for the Simpson Health Center residents will be done by employees. Mediacom has a new sports channel on 67.14. You might have to auto tune your TV- if you have questions please ask a team member. ESPNU can be viewed on direct TV in the fireside library or if you have the upgrade package. The Purple Chair Project will be held Thursday, March 12 in the Celebration Center at 6:30 p.m. Please bring snacks and drinks to share while enjoying live storytelling. Stories shared will have a time limit of 8 minutes and the theme is “your favorite story”. Julie hopes to have this event every quarter with a theme. Julie leaves for Costa Rica Sunday morning and plans to return on Tuesday the following week.

Denise Halverson: Denise returned from a two week trip in Hawaii. She thanks everyone for the time away. What she took away from the trip is to practice aloha- love, affection, and passion and she encourages us to do the same. Denise also thanks everyone for the care, concern, and sympathy regarding the passing of her grandmother Eloise. There will be a volunteer celebration on April 7 at 12:00 p.m. in the Celebration Center. Please RSVP by April 3 by calling the number on the invitation or stopping by Denise’s office. Doug Lockin will be here March 12 and March 26. If you would like to set up a meeting with Doug, please see Denise.

Kenny thanked everyone for coming to the meeting and gave a reminder to exercise and take care of yourself. Kenny ended the meeting with a story of travels with his wife Barb.

DOUG’S CORNER UnLOCKINg the Power of Philanthropy

TIMELESS?

My thoughts this month are not new. Specifically, what follows are excerpts of several 2015 columns. I celebrate the fact that, like your most deeply held family values, the principles underlying charitable gift planning feel “timeless.”

In one 2015 column, the focus was the “power of philanthropy:” “A great misunderstanding in my world is that the “power of

UnLOCKINg the Power of Philanthropy philanthropy” is a force waiting to be unleashed from the gift planning arrangements in my figurative “tool bag,” (Charitable Gift Annuities, Charitable Remainder Trusts, or IRA Rollovers, for example).

To be sure, gift planning “tools” can be powerful and help you accomplish great things. But like the real tools of skilled craftsmen, they must be applied in the proper situation with careful planning.

I contend the real “power of philanthropy” is found in your mind and heart, and is unleashed when you join forces with organizations like Friendship Haven to help people. Yes, Friendship Haven’s mission statement is longer than “help people,” but that is what it is really all about.

Another 2015 column featured four “timeless” concepts to help focus the power of philanthropy inside you: COULD YOU USE MORE INCOME? - Charitable plans that can help you increase your spendable income.

WHAT IS BETTER THAN CASH? - Making gifts to favorite organizations without using your checkbook or credit card.

EXTRA JOY! PASSING ALONG MORE THAN PROPERTY! - The joy you may find passing VALUES to family members in addition to your property.

I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE…IF THERE IS ANYTHING LEFT! - Common end-of-life giving plans, and how each can create a charitable gift “only if there is anything left.”

Near the end of 2015, each of the preceding four topics was the focus of a brief educational presentation. I would like to repeat these, perhaps in the summer and fall this year. Denise Halverson and I will make plans with announcements forthcoming.

Your wants and needs will always be the focus. And, as always, Denise can connect us, or I welcome hearing from you directly.

April 2020 GREETINGS from Spiritual Care

As we begin April 2020, practicing our physical distancing skills, I encourage you to also practice your social skills as well: reach out to your neighbors, find “new” ways to keep in touch with your family and friends. Many churches are using Facebook and Zoom, among other electronic means of providing worship and fellowship times with their members. If you want to participate with your congregation who may be doing something live on a Sunday or any other day, and you need some assistance in getting connected, let one of the Team Members know! We will do our best to help you get connected.

Continue to look for updates on worship times and other activities on Channel 16. I admit, I normally don’t think about the fact that the TV camera is on, broadcasting our worship services on Sundays and Thursdays, I am much more aware of it now!

Know that I continue to hold each of you in my daily prayers.

Blessings as we enter Spring and the month of April. May April bring us more flowers than showers.

Great Decisions The following individuals have made a great decision by making a move to Friendship Haven during the past month. Please join me in extending a warm welcome to them.

Gary and Mary Bowman have moved to Friendship Haven from their home near Fort Worth, Texas. They were both raised in Fort Dodge and graduated from Senior High. Both of them had parents that resided at Friendship Haven, and their son lives in Fort Dodge and Catherine Chalstrom on Hilltop Road is a cousin. After a short stay in Catalyst, they have moved to a Kenyon Place apartment.

Mary was born in Sheldon, Iowa. She attended the University of Iowa and later received degrees from both Texas Christian University and University of Texas at Arlington. She initially was a school teacher and later was a software engineer. Gary has a BS in aerospace engineering from Iowa State and an MA from Southern Methodist in civil engineering. He worked in the design and testing of jet aircraft.

The Bowmans have been married for 56 years and had two children, with one being deceased. They plan to attend St. Paul Lutheran. Mary enjoys quilting and reading, and Gary is fond of hunting, fishing and restoring old cars. Additionally, he has a passion for model railroading.
