PORTFOLIO INTERIOR DESIGN 2023

HELLO !

My name is Freya Patel, a third year student majoring in environment and space design at GLS Institue of design. Looking for an internship as a junior interior designer. The main focus in my carrer is finding experience and expanding my knowledge in interior designing.

I always had a strong interest in design , especially in space design. I am excited to find new experiences to gain and knowledge to learn new things and like to explore a lot. Striving to gain more knowlede, exploring possibilities, and excelling to make my design touch people’s lives.

FURNITURE DESIGN

To design a multifunctional outside table which is ecofriendly and using a material which solves the problem of fungi and rusting.

BRIEF CONCEPT

The concept was to design a multifunctional outside tableon which one can have their morning and evening snack in the lap of nature which is even ecofriendly. Here the aim was to give the solution to the problem of the furniture which is placed outside, the surface gets heated up easily so, people tend to use plastic chairs even Wet, dirt and other outdoor elements build up and create a breeding ground for all sorts of nasty elements. If mildew and fungus are not removed quickly, they can destroy the factory finish and ruin the furniture forever. Rusting Is even a problem for outside furniture.

What could be better than having your morning and evening snack in the lap of nature on you ecofriendly and multifunctional outside table?

WOOD JOINERY

Used tounge and grove joint to attach two peices of wood together. The tongue with a grove feature is easy to attach together because of its simplicity and it allows for a tight fit that has plenty of surface area for adhesives. This groove and tongue feature creates a reasonably strong and aesthetically pleasing joint.

DESIGN EFFICIENCY PROJECT

BRIEF

To design a partition wall in a corporate space between higher authorities and workspace so that the they can keep check on the workers whenever needed.

CONCEPT

The concept was to design a partition wall where our fitness criteria was visibility. The aim was to optimise visibility for privacy. We explored three different types of system and tested the visibility analysis to see which was the best suited for privacy.

FABRIC FRAMEWORK

Explore different materials and derive an inspiration from the materials present around you , where an understanding of the material and its potential is to be developed and also propose the construction material .

BRIEF CONCEPT

The concept was to create a doubly curved surface by exploiting and contradicting the existent physical properties of a material and permitting to take its shape using the method of generative design and later conceptualise in a space. The project research started with understanding material and its properties which further gave direction to the geometric explorations. We studied its princpal characteristics, limitations, and possible joinery detail that could help us achieve the desired form and resulted in creation of triangular geometric module which was further assembled to create varied 3-D forms.

MATERIAL

Lycra (textile membrane)

The material lycra has been used as a continuous membrane treated as a flexible cover. It can be stretched more than 500% without breakage. It is stronger, more durable and has higher retractive force than rubber.

Cycle Spokes (stainless steel)

The material cycle spokes are stainless steel in nature and has been used as a primary framework . It can be bent to 360 degrees without being damaged has high tensile strength, easy formability and fabrication and corrosion resistant.

PROCESS

Cycle spokes had been cut to a measure of 11 inches and was further bent to 120 degrees through its midpoint.

120 Degrees

The bent spokes were then welded forming a triangular shape

Lycra fabric was cut to a triangular shape of side measuring 18 cm each and was used to create a surface which is tied by thread at the welded forms bents and vertices

A form is obtained and is multiplied to certain number These forms were then attached each

SURFACE INTEGRATED AESTHETHETICS

BRIEF

To design a meaningful surface in context to two main categories, craft based or space based. It was all about conceptual thinking and solution.

CONCEPT

Space was choosed as a category here. The concept was to design a canopy surface at L.D museum entrance pathway, which engages with the user and communicates the language of the museum. Playing with the jaali patterns, which were inspired by the museums paintings itself, gave an intresting role to sciography which helped to improve the design language.

RESEARCH

Space : Lalbhai Dalpatbhai museum, Ahmedabad

Year of establishment : 1984

Architect : B.V Doshi

UNDERSTANDING THE SPACE

LALBHAI DALPATBHAI MUSEUM

Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Museum features a perfect blend of art and history with a massive collection of around 76000 handwritten Jain manuscripts including 500 illustrated ones and around 45000 printed books. An outstanding collection of manuscripts, miniature paintings and sculptures.

SURFACE INTEGRATED AESTHETICS

00. CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT:

This was the space chosen to intervene with. Two walls were chosen which were at a certain distance which was divided by the entrance pathway but could be visually connected .The reason for choosing this external space was that there was no design element communicating the language of museum and it was just a flat surface which was not engaging the users. The space was also interesting to work on .

DESIGN PARAMETER:

As it is an external space and is a flat surface the play of sciography can make the place interesting . Addition of organic forms can make the space look more dynamic yet . Working in layers was the prime idea ,to introduce punctures for user interaction physically as well as visually with the sciography . Connecting one wall to another with a canopy structure and introducing jaali but not some conventional one rather taking inspirations from their design philosophies and collections was the whole idea .

Jali patterns which were introduced:

To achieve the play of sciography jaali patterns are introduced on the surface but it is not typical jaali intervention , it is rather implemented on a canopy like structure and the jaali patterns are inspired from the museum’s design language .

Ideation was done in organic forms for the canopy like structure . The surface was made interesting by changing its form to canopy like structure with the design parameters already mentioned.
