English Project Infants The main objective of our English Projectat Freta is that our students acquire the English language rather than learn it. Exactly the same way as they acquire their mother tongue.

To achieve this objective in the classroom, the teacher using the English language creates an English environment where the students are exposed to a variety of language situations. In the infants, our objective is to build the foundations of the language, an important and vital part of our project and to provide them with the tools to be effective communicators.

By providing a multi faceted approach we create a dynamic and interactive environment which stimulates the natural curiosity and imagination of young children.

How do we do this?

• English speaking environment.

• Developing simple classroom language so that the children feel secure.

• Using songs and chants to help develop intonation, rhythm and stress.

• Celebrating English Festivals: Halloween, Christmas.

• TPR activities - which allow children to participate using only movements or gestures... everyone can join in he re!

• Stories... For enjoyment and comprehension.

• Providing as many different opportunities as possible to reproduce and participate in activities using the English language.

• Project work to expand knowledge and provide students with more opportunities to interact by expressing their own ideas or experiences.

And finally, of course ”a titlle bit of magic” to take advantage of the curiosity, imagination and innocence that is the world of a young child.

English Project Primary FUN IN THE ENGLISH CLASS The aim of this article is to give the reader an idea of how we go about learning English (not teaching as i believe you learn not teach a language) at “Escoles Freta,” Primary. We believe that learning English is not always easy but it should be fun. Our goal is to motivate and engage our students by doing lots of different activities and not just follow a course book. We practice English through songs, drama, cookery, games, poetry, storytelling and projects.

SONGS Singing is a great way to bring variety and fun to language learning. We sing and dance to songs, do listening exercises and use the internet for karaoke. Of course, the majority of language in songs is in fact informal. Using songs can prepare students with the genuine language they will be faced with.

DRAMA Role-play and Drama is something children love. It provides them with an opportunity to develop their imagination they gain confidence learn new vocabulary and interact fluently.

COOKERY Cookery in the English class is so much fun.

Children learn the names of ingredients and words like sieve, whisk, stir, mix, roll and melt. They learn what a recipe is and that they need to follow instructions to achieve the required results.

Cooking provides an excellent opportunity to discuss where foods come from such as eggs and milk and how and where various foods grow. Children can learn many things through questions raised in the kitchen including what they need to eat to keep healthy.

GAMES Games help and encourage children to sustain their interest and work. Games also help us teachers to create contexts in which the language is useful and meaningful. Children want to take part in the game and in order to do so must understand what others are saying or have written.

They have to speak or write in order to express their own point of view or give information.

LITERATURE Humour, comprehensive language themes

porter nglish kids identify with are all reasons to use simple poetry in the classroom.

Storytelling is a jumpstart for creative writing. It is an effective way to help children’s transition from oral/kinaesthetic to written language. Storytelling is a skill that can be effectively directed to improve other skills, such as writing, grammar, listening and speaking. Storytelling inany form is a natural way for children to build literacy skills. Learning how to tell a story by writing it down, talking about it, and learning to actively listen to someone else’s story are activities that teach essential language skills. It also creates a funny and entertaining atmosphere in the classroom.

PROJECTS Most of our projects are based on Science.

They teach students to work together, to be part of a group, to share. Projects integrate a variety of language skills. It involves not only using language to complete the task, but also reporting on the task. One of the things children like about projects is the opportunity to display their work.

All this together with lots of love, patience and dedication is what makes learning and teaching English so much FUN!
