FRESNO STATE HOSTS CAL POLY IN AG NIGHT GAME

Campus Wi-Fi to be upgraded By Megan Rupe The Collegian

Change is coming to Fresno State’s wireless Internet after a system overload led to the university’s decision to implement a new system. After receiving calls and complaints of increased log in wait times, some students reported wait times of up to one minute. Jim Michael, executive director of technology services at Fresno State, said the current network began experiencing delays on Aug. 28. Michael said the network,

which registers sometimes more than 15,000 users daily, usually works well inside most buildings. He said the portal that gives users permission to access the network was overloaded by the large number of devices on campus. “Even when the phones, tablets—when the person isn’t actively trying to use the network, just the fact that it’s [the device] saying, ‘I’m here, I’m here, I’m here,’ is keeping that server really busy,” Michael said. “And the more of them saying, ‘I’m here, I’m here,’ the busier it gets.” See WI-FI, Page 3

Fresno State volunteers feed several hundred families on Saturday mornings during the semester at the Bulldog Pantry.

The fight against hunger exists even in one of the world’s richest agricultural areas, and students, faculty and staff at Fresno State are working together to help the needy in the Valley. Jessica Medina from Advising Services, who has worked with the student-run Bulldog Pantry since it started in 2007, said it feels right to call it a fight to stop hunger. The effort requires volunteers and the community coming together. “There’s a lot of people out there who are not only struggling to pay their bills, but are trying to decide, ‘Do I pay the bills this month or do I put food on the table for my children?’” Medina said. “We want to say we helped them fight that constant wonder in their mind of what they’re going to be able to do this month.” In 2012, the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research reported that about 3.8 million people were “food-insecure” in California. Specifically, the San Joaquin Valley is one of the worst areas in the state in terms of this problem. “The San Joaquin Valley is one of the most proSee HUNGER, Page 3

By Esra Hashem The Collegian Tailored after college towns across the country, construction on shops and restaurants for the Campus Pointe project adjacent to the Save Mart Center is beginning this month. The $115 million development includes restaurants, retail stores, a Hyatt Place hotel and a cinema. Edward Kashian, the project developer and chief executive officer of Lance-Kashian &w Co., said that this new construction reflects the wants and needs of the community. “The purpose is so that people who live and work in the area have somewhere to shop and eat and entertain themselves,” he said. The Campus Pointe project aims to satisfy part of Fresno State’s long-range master plan, which looks forward to enrollment in 2025, by expanding community access. Kashian said he

was chosen as the preferred developer for the project by Fresno State more than five years ago. “What the university wanted is a community that would allow students, faculty and administration to have some social intercourse,” Kashian said. “So, fundamentally, what we’re building is a college town.” Campus Pointe will include businesses like Cold Stone Creamery and KwirkWorld. Kashian said many spaces are still available to rent and that he hopes Fresno State students are not shy about voicing what they’d like to see there. Kelly Lagle, a Fresno State nursing student, said she would like to see healthy food choices at Campus Pointe. “The area should be a college environment, but I wouldn’t want there to be a bar,” she said. “I’d like it more family-based. It would See POINTE, Page 3
