EDITOR’S NOTE There are all sorts of rules to think about when getting a tattoo. Don’t get a significant other’s name permanently etched on your body. Don’t get matching tattoos unless you’re family. Don’t get one on your hands, feet, or elbows because they’ll fade quickly. Then there are the elite rules such as, don’t walk in picking something off the wall and get it tattooed on your body as-is. And certainly, don’t copy someone else’s tattoo, even if it’s slightly different... no sir, it doesn’t count, it’s still the same as reproducing someone else’s artwork. However, when you’re young, none of this matters. I should know, I tattooed a barcode on the back of my brother’s neck simply because we both thought it was hilarious. He did end up having it removed later when he joined the Army (the military didn’t find it as funny), and we’re both glad, now that we’re mature adults, it worked out that way. Although, I should note that he has, since leaving the armed forces, acquired an impressive display of sleeves, hand and neck tattoos - all done by artists WAY more talented and worthy than myself. No, I don’t tattoo. I was just a kid (late teens-ish) with access to a professional gun. Around that same time, I let a guy fresh out of CYA (California Youth Authority to you) convince me that a guitar string mounted

in an ink pen casing attached to an electric toothbrush motor was the same as a tattoo gun. Fifteen years later and I’m still sporting a very ‘unique’ yet undistinguishable design. The point is, Fresno and the Central Valley have some insanely talented tattoo artists that are worth your time in research and hard earned cash. Go to all the shops; it may take you a while as the Central Valley is loaded with them, and take a look inside. You can read as many reviews as you’d like, but at the end of the day, it’s important to note that artists come and go in most shops as not everyone is lucky to have an owner or resident artist who calls one parlor home for more than a few years. One of the best artists I ever met not only had photos of his work fresh off the table, but also side-by-sides of what his work looked like after it had healed. I hear people all the time gripe about what some of the shops are charging per hour or even per project, then get excited about someone they’ve never met who will tattoo for half the price out of their kitchen. DON’T BE THAT GUY. There are artists here in the Valley whose art is so well-known and revered that clients will fly in from all over the world to get work done by them. Lucky for us, we don’t have to travel very far - so don’t take it for granted. You really can’t put a price on quality art that will live on your body forever.

HIGH CLASS q & A with audie fulfer by Lisa Talley | lisa@fresnoflyer.com

P

op culture, comics, realism, full-color renditions of your favorite childhood (or, let’s face it, adulthood) characters, Audie Fulfer of High Class Tattoo and Body Modification of Fresno has made it his business to bring them to life on your skin. From The Maxx to Breaking Bad to Ghost Busters to Superman, Fulfer is no stranger to pop culture requests. Often tackling portraiture work of famous characters, he’s also nailed down fictional creatures, cartoons, and monsters born from films and graphic novels. An unabashedly self-proclaimed ‘nerd’, it’s difficult to say who’s enjoying the tattoo more, Fulfer or his clients. We had a chance to chit-chat with the Owner of High Class to get to know the man behind the explosively colorful tattoos bringing people to Fresno from all over the world.

Year you started tattooing: I started tattooing around 2005-2006

35 now so that’s a lot of years to collect plenty of tattoos that I’m both happy with and those that I’m not, but I would have to say my favorites are my kids’ names. They were tattooed how they wrote them in kindergarten. When they got a little older I let them tattoo a little piece next to each one of their names, which is pretty special to me.

Favorite tattoo you’ve given or most memorable (why): I think that’s a million dollar question

for most tattooers hahah… I’ve done so many that I thought were awesome, it makes it really hard to say what was/is my favorite because each of those tattoos is memorable in its own way.

Talk about how you got into tattooing where did you start: In the beginning, I just did

Was it a linear path to tattooing or a surprising detour? I would

have to say that I just kind of fell in to it. It wasn’t planned whatsoever. I had a totally different route that I was going to take with my art but after doing it for so long, people close to me - knowing that I was artistic - would always ask me to draw things for them. Over time, all of that eventually turned into me drawing designs for their tattoos as well, I was basically nudged into that direction slowly.

Are tattoos the only type of artwork you do, or are you also a painter, sculptor, photographer, filmmaker, etc.? Yeah, I do a lot of drawing still when I can, which I feel is important as a tattooer because not everything art-based should completely revolve around designing the next tattoo. Drawing for fun is always something that I’ve done.

Favorite tattoo on your body (why): I got my first when I was 16, I’m

small tattoos here and there on close friends, mimicking what I saw in magazines - but I never took it too serious mainly because I just didn’t want to mess people up. After some time, I did become more confident but I was still playing it safe, however, I knew that if I really wanted to tattoo correctly I needed to get in to an actual shop. Eventually, I ended up at a shop and I finally got my foot in door. It helped me get a feel for what needed to be done in order to be clean, safe, and sterile. So, in hindsight, it was the beginning of an

apprenticeship. After a few months though, I got thrown to the wolves being told that I had to stepup and start tattooing

after o n e of the artists was fired - I had to hit the floor running. I stayed within my skill set at the time but it was difficult and mind-racking. So I guess you could say that I had a partial apprenticeship but mostly, I

taught myself.

You own High Class, talk about the early days ? Well, I had been tattooing for this

shop and things were going good for a while but eventually the owner started doing things that were unsavory to me. He was treating customers and the staff like crap, snaking clients from his own staff and then taking advantage of the situation without appreciating any of it because he wanted to be the rockstar of the shop. So when I decided to leave, I told myself I didn’t want to work at a shop that treated people unethically or wrong but then a buddy that worked at the shop with me said that I should open my own place instead of working for someone else. Ten years later, here we are!

Who’s your ideal client? I would have to say someone who

knows what they want but wants me to fully take creative control and design the tattoo, because I know what will look good, work, and hold up over time. There’s so much trust that’s needed for that so when a client is willing and shows that amount of trust the results end up being awesome.

Favorite moment in your career thus far: If I absolutely have to pick one I

Everything I do has been self taught for the most part, that and also discussing techniques and theories with other tattoo artists during my travels.

You also do quite a bit of portraits and renditions of famous characters - would you say that’s a specialty? Well, it just kind of happened. I did a

few here and there and since I’m a fan of a lot of the things I happen to tattoo and people started to take notice of that. Over time, more and more people wanted similar art done by me. I guess now you can say it’s definitely a specialty of mine.

What would you say your specialty is? I would say full-color tattoos is my thing. I do a lot of different things but full color realism, illustrated style art, and animation tattoos are what I’m known for.

Who (or what) inspires you? Everything inspires me, I know that’s probably a cheesy response but for now, I feel that it’s an accurate answer .

What’s next for High Class - any future plans fans can keep an eye out for? Well, we just started our 10th year

would have to say when I first got an email from a client in Canada who wanted to fly to Fresno just to get a tattoo. For me, it was a big deal because I finally knew that my work had started to make an impact in the industry. Since then, I’ve had numerous clients fly from different parts of the world .

so I’m looking forward to seeing what another 10 years brings. Also ,I’m going to be starting an online store for my artwork. I’ll be offering t-shirts and stickers, buttons and prints, patches, sketch books and color books all based on my style of tattoo artwork and pop culture. That’s definitely going to be something to look out for.

You do some amazing color work, were you classically trained in art or self taught?

fads for decades. The problem with this is that it assumes all carbs are equal, which is false. “The important thing to realize is there are high-quality and low-quality carbs,” says Blatner. “Instead of shaming all carbs, focus on high-quality sources of carbohydrates that fuel the body and give you energy - skip the refined grains like white bread and focus on whole grains.” Want to try a recipe that uses some of these formerly misunderstood foods? Blatner shares one of her favorites.

3 Formerly Misunderstood Foods Now a Part of a Well-Balanced Diet (BPT) - Throughout history, misconceptions, misinformation and popular culture have influenced Americans’ eating habits. Many foods that were previously eaten daily are now considered unhealthy. Conversely, some foods that were thought to be “bad for you,” are now considered nutritious. “Nutrition is exciting. Just about every day there is new research about how certain foods work in our body,” says Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner. “Over time as research is done, foods that were once considered unhealthy can be found to actually play a key role in healthy diets.” What historically “unhealthy” foods are now considered wholesome? Blatner provides some examples:

Eggs

more nutrition than ordinary eggs. “Many health and nutrition organizations are finally recognizing eggs for the nutrient powerhouse they are,” says Blatner. “Eggland’s Best eggs have six times more vitamin D, more than double the omega-3s and more than double the vitamin B12 of ordinary eggs, making them the best egg option to maximize your nutritional intake.”

Nuts Snacking on nuts today is typically considered a healthy way to keep hunger pangs at bay, but it wasn’t always that way. Nuts used to have a bad reputation for being high in fat and calories, and were often avoided, especially for people who wanted to lose weight. Today, many nuts are considered the ideal nutritious snack as they contain hearthealthy monounsaturated fats. For example, the versatile almond is relatively low in calories when compared to other nuts and has more calcium than other varieties, according to Health.com. Plus, almonds are rich in fiber and vitamin E, an important antioxidant. “Nuts can make a great snack or wonderful addition to recipes,” says Blatner. “The one thing to be mindful of is sodium intake. Opt for raw nuts or dry-roasted varieties. These are minimally processed and typically won’t contain the salt and oils you’ll find in other varieties.”

Shunned for many years, eggs were believed to be bad for heart health due to high cholesterol levels. However, numerous studies have shown that intake of dietary cholesterol has little influence on blood cholesterol levels. In fact, the Harvard School of Public Health states that the biggest influence on blood cholesterol level is the mix of fats and carbohydrates in your diet - not the amount of cholesterol you take in from food. Today, eggs are part of a healthy diet - so much so that recently the country’s leading weight loss service announced that eggs are now included on its zero points list. 2 Eggland’s Best Eggs (Large), 1 tablespoon milk, 1 dash of salt, 1 dash of ground black pepper, 1 large whole wheat tortilla (12 inch), 1/2 avocado (mashed), 1 cup fresh baby spinach For the spicy sauce: Mix 2 tablespoons plain Greek yogurt, 1 tablespoon Sriracha (or other hot sauce) and 1 teaspoon milk in a small bowl.

Directions: Coat a 10-inch nonstick pan with cooking spray and heat on medium-low heat. In a bowl, whisk together eggs and milk and season with salt and pepper. Pour egg mixture into pan and cover with a lid. Do not scramble! Cook until set (about 3-4 minutes), flip and finish cooking (about 1-2 minutes). Lay tortilla flat and spread with avocado, leaving a 2-inch border around the edges. When eggs are finished cooking, place in the center of the tortilla and top with spinach. Start at one end and roll tightly, but gently. Coat the same skillet with nonstick spray and warm on medium-high heat. Place roll seam-side down on skillet and brown slightly on both sides. Remove and allow to rest for 1-2 minutes. Using a serrated knife, slice 1-inch pieces, drizzle with spicy sauce and serve with chopsticks.

CALENDAR \\ CHILDREN’S MUSICAL Children’s Musical Theaterworks Presents, “Legally Blonde The Musical” – With Laura Bell Bundy!

C

hildren’s Musical Theaterworks is hosting auditions for their upcoming production of “Legally Blonde” on February 17th and 18th at 1:00 pm at the Sierra Vista Mall. This fun show, directed by Vanessa Gonzales, will run April 13 -22 at the Fresno Memorial Auditorium in downtown Fresno. Like all CMT shows, all who audition are cast in the show. CMT’s cast will feature teens and young adults aged 12-20 (restrictions apply to 12-13 year old, as they must have previously appeared in another CMT show). Ms. Gonzales is a choreographer from Fresno, California. Her credits include The Hunchback of Notre Dame (CMT), Bring it On The Musical (Hollywood High), Chicago (Hollywood High) and All Shook Up (Clovis East High). She currently serves as the Director of Dance and Folklorico at Clovis East High. This fabulously fun, international award-winning musical based on the adored movie, follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes, snobbery and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. This action-packed musical explodes on the stage with memorable songs and dynamic dances.

Equal parts hilarious and heart-warming, this musical is so much fun, it should be illegal! Legally Blonde The Musical will take you from the sorority house to the halls of justice with Broadway’s brightest new heroine (and, of course, her Chihuahua, Bruiser). As the musical opens, Elle Woods appears to have it all. Her life is turned upside down, however, when her boyfriend dumps her so he can start getting serious about his life and attend Harvard Law. Determined to get him back, Elle uses her charm to get into Harvard Law. At school, she struggles with peers, professors and Warner Huntington. With the help of Paulette and Emmett, though, Elle quickly realizes her potential and sets out to prove herself to the world. This musical is relatively new to the theatre world, catering to the present-day’s generation and culture. Legally Blonde The Musical stays true to form with a peppy score and playful book. This musical is ridiculously enjoyable, from start to finish! Participation in this show will offer something very special to our cast members. In addition to the standard 6-7 week rehearsal process, cast members will receive an additional Masterclass taught by the one

and only Laura Bell Bundy, famed Broadway, television and recording artist who received a Tony nomination for her originating role of Elle Woods on Broadway! Laura was also in the original Broadway casts of Hairspray (Amber), Wicked and Ruthless. She has also starred in two TV shows: Anger Management and Hart of Dixie. Each of our cast members will have personal interaction with Laura so this will be a show not to be missed!!! In addition, there will be a live public performance featuring Ms. Bundy on April 8th, 2017! Tickets will be available on the website soon. CMT is the valley’s premier youth theater company. We are a non-profit with the mission that every student who auditions is cast in the production, making us the only place where many of our valley’s youth receive training. As a non-profit with a very limited budget, we still strive to ensure that no child is turned away due to the inability to

pay tuition. Therefore, we continue to make every effort to assist low income students with sponsorships from local businesses. This has been a trying few months for our company. In October, we received an eviction notice from the City of Fresno from our beloved home, our theater, the Veteran’s Memorial Auditorium. This was due to upgrades that the city felt were required to keep the doors open. Fortunately, the community and the media rallied behind us, and after meeting with the city, we have been granted a one-year extension to continue on, while we seek a major donor to help fund these repairs. Because we are in this position, our 2018 season has become a crucial turning point for us, so we are really hoping that turn out is strong for this show! Please visit our website at www. cmtworks.org for all of the details on how to audition with us!
