AMAZING DOWNTOWN MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

J

ust the other day someone asked how being Chair felt. “It feels great,” I replied. I saw someone not far from me roll their eyes. I get it. But, really — it feels great. This is an amazing opportunity and I’m a little disappointed it is already April.

As of now, I don’t see a lot of real challenges for the year, (kiss of death — right?) I am extremely grateful it’s not an election year, and overall I see the remaining months as clear sailing to tackle some of the issues we’ve set out to do.

Last year, when I stood in front of the board, I was able to share my passion for Fresno, but especially for Downtown. I’m a lover of downtowns. Some people claim they’re just smelly, congested and full of rude strangers in a hurry. But I love visiting other cities and following the signs that lead you to downtown. Sometimes you don’t find anything special, but most times you tap into the sense of community, a sense that starts to reveal what this place is about.

What do the people that live here like about it? What do they care about? The story starts with a main street and builds from there.

I remember when the Fulton Mall was going in. It was such a huge deal. Yes, I was old enough to remember — I was 9. I’ll save you some time doing the math and just tell you, I’m 63. (This is where you look at my picture and say quietly to yourselves, “Wow, she looks good for 63.”)

The Fulton Mall replaced Fresno’s main street and after years of success, followed by decay, we’re back to ‘Main Street.’ Or at least what I hope will be considered Main Street. Picture it. Walking down Fulton, sitting outside and enjoying coffee, reading the paper or just people watching. Going another few blocks, maybe grabbing lunch, seeing some friends or who knows, maybe seeing the Mayor and just stopping to say hello. I know nothing is ever so perfect. If this were real life, you’d have stepped in gum along the way or somehow dropped that coffee.

But, that’s not the point.

In my perfect world, I live and work in an area that doesn’t require venturing very far for what I need. I would love to see more of Fresno like that. Take the Tower District. You can live near restaurants, dry cleaners, theaters — what’s not to like?

That’s what I want for Downtown, for Fulton Street. I think we’re on our way. This isn’t for everyone, but I believe Fresno has that culture. Fresno has people that want and thrive on a sense of community. The Tower District, Fig Garden, Sunnyside; these are all examples of a community inside a community, inside of a city.

I’ve challenged this year’s board with five projects to research and hope to find a path to keep things moving. We have momentum. We have Jimmy Cerracchio with The Downtown Fresno Partnership who brings a background of revitalization to the table. He works with a board willing to take the next step forward.

We have a Mayor and City Council that I believe want to hear from us. They want to know what we want and what we need to move the bar. And that’s definitely not something you find everywhere.

This year’s board has jumped right in. We’ve done our homework, we’re meeting with the City and with The Downtown Fresno Partnership, we have board members that have made their way onto committees, and we’re sure that whoever is listening and whoever is paying attention knows that the Fresno Chamber of Commerce is working for a stronger and better Fresno. It’s what our members have tasked us to do and it’s what we’re going to do.

So yes, when I say it feels great to be the Chair, I mean it.

There’s nothing I’d rather be doing than helping make Fresno the type of city where people want to come and follow the signs downtown to find a place they can fall in love with.

T

he Valley Business Awards Luncheon was held on Feb. 20 at the Fresno Convention Center. This exciting event is designed to celebrate business and philanthropy in the Fresno area through several entrepreneurship awards. Nearly 700 attendees arrived at the colorfully decorated convention center, ready for a delightful meal prepared by the incomparable Pardini’s Catering.

Chamber President and CEO, Nathan Ahle quieted the crowd and gave a brief history on the awards luncheon. The Valley Business Awards Luncheon has been a long running Chamber tradition, with the Leon S. Peters Award serving as the cornerstone. Through the years, the event has served as the ideal 8 | Summer 2019

opportunity to honor those who undertake the great challenge of entrepreneurship in what is often an unfriendly business climate, particularly in California. The three entrepreneurship awards given by the Chamber are: Student Entrepreneur of the Year, Rising Star of the Year, and the Harold Zinkin Award, given to honor an established business who has been in the industry for years. As the event proceeded, each of these honorees was commended for their bravery and ingenuity. The afternoon culminated in the bestowing of the Leon S. Peters Award.

The Student Entrepreneur winner this year is Gladys Sanchez of Tony’s Coconut Fusion, a business in the early stages that

blends flavors from the U.S. and Mexico. The Rising Star of the Year, Lanna Coffee, is an inspired endeavor that provides jobs to men and women in Thailand and delicious coffee to the Fresno area. The Zinkin Award was given to Milano Restaurants International, whose creative concepts grew from pizzerias to unique restaurants that run the gamut in convenience and fun.

The crowning event of the day was the Leon S. Peters Award. This year’s recipient Matty Matoian, is known throughout the community for his business acumen as well as his staunch support of a variety of philanthropic endeavors that include hospitals, educational institutions and organizations that cater to a wide variety of causes.

Matty was honored to receive the award as one of many great Fresnans and declared his appreciation to the delighted onlookers.

This year’s Valley Business Awards Luncheon was one of the best received yet. The Chamber looks forward to even more great events to come!

B

y the time you read this, budget season will be upon us.

Our organization will be looking to our city leaders to pass a balanced budget that reflects the most intense needs in our community: public safety, infrastructure in all neighborhoods and parks. Passing a sound budget is one of the most important tasks our Mayor and City Council undertake every year, and we are always looking to help support these elected officials in their endeavor to do so.

We are also heading full steam into another special election for Fresno City Council, District 2. This seat was vacated by now County Supervisor Steve Brandau after his special election victory in March. The first of many elections for this seat is scheduled for Aug. 13; if no candidate successfully obtains 50% plus one vote in August, there will be a top-two runoff in November. The successful candidate will then have to turn around and continue campaigning for the regularly scheduled general primary in March 2020.

At the state level, the legislature seems to be following the lead of our new Governor, Gavin Newsome. A significant number of the 2,567 bills introduced this year focus on housing, health care and water — all topics discussed in Governor Newsome’s State of the State address earlier this year. In the early stages of the legislative process, we are hopeful for progress in the areas of CEQA Reform as well as water-system maintenance.

Our local legislators are taking some of the biggest issues we face here in the Valley head-on. Newly elected Senator Hurtado

along with newly elected Senator Borgeas have authored SB559, a bill that would allocate $400 million to repair the FriantKern Canal, which has been in desperate need of repair. Senator Borgeas has also authored a CEQA Reform bill, SB-659, which will award attorneys’ fees to the lead agency or project applicant if a frivolous CEQA is unsuccessfully filed against them. Senator Caballero has also taken on CEQA Reform in SB-25, a bill that will expedite the CEQA review process for projects located in “opportunity zones” for investment. Finally, Assemblyman Patterson has worked to address the difficulty many face to remove dead trees from the forests in AB-343. This bill will create a grant program for communities to be reimbursed some of the cost of transporting trees that would otherwise pose a wildfire risk, to a biomass energy facility where the trees can be disposed of. These bills are a small example of the Valley’s representation in Sacramento, and we look forward to following the bills that will create a positive change in our region.

At the federal level, the contentious relationship between the Democrat-controlled House and the Republican-controlled Senate and White House has continued. While there are bills still being passed and signed into law, we are seeing little to no movement on key issues impacting our country, such as immigration, trade and federal help for California’s water issues.

With both sides gearing up for the 2020 presidential election, it will be interesting to see if any of these issues are addressed in the next six months.

T

he Downtown Fresno Partnership is leading Downtown Fresno toward its future as a hive of business activity by promoting Downtown Fresno’s image, supporting physical improvements and development, advocating for merchants and hosting special events that bring new life to the historic core of the city.

The opening of Fulton Street in 2017, a pedestrian mall since the 1960s, breathed new life into the area, with more than 33 businesses moving into the district since then. In addition, there have been renovations to several buildings such as The Rustigan Building and those comprising Renoir Corner, now a collection of notable restaurants. The district also looks forward to welcoming Club One Casino into the old Gottschalks Building and major improvements to Chukchansi Park — thanks to Fresno’s minor league baseball team, The Grizzlies.

Not only a hub for everyday life, Downtown Fresno is also the heart of numerous special events. Annual celebrations 14 | Summer 2019

include Fiestas Patrias and The Downtown Fresno Christmas Parade, which marks its 90th anniversary this year. In March, DFP assisted Tioga Sequoia in presenting FresYes Fest, an extravaganza of live music, food trucks and craft beer that drew over 17,000 people to Downtown Fresno. Springtime also brought the annual State of Downtown showcase, this year at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Meanwhile, DFP puts on weekly events such as Market on Kern and Cart Hop at Mariposa Plaza to keep Downtown Fresno humming throughout the year. And DFP ensures that, in the midst of all this activity, everyone feels welcome and stays safe, with its Downtown Fresno Ambassadors providing hospitality services and its overnight security patrols.

But the buzz isn’t just about what’s already happening, and DFP is excited about future developments such as renovations to the JC Penney building, improvements to Mariposa Plaza and the redevelopment of Hotel Fresno. Additionally, Downtown Fresno Partnership is always actively recruiting new businesses and

connecting potential tenants to brokers and property owners. Its website (downtownfresno.org) and social media highlight all that Downtown Fresno has to offer.

To complement DFP’s efforts, The Downtown Fresno Foundation was founded as its charitable arm. As a 501(c)(3), the foundation is able to receive charitable donations and grants and use that money for placemaking projects and programs that benefit Downtown Fresno. Projects range from developing and marketing the Downtown Fresno Ale Trail Guide to fueling innovation and growth by organizing the “Create Here” business plan competition and the Downtown Academy Program for young professionals, with the goal of creating future advocates for Downtown Fresno.

In these myriad ways, DFP plays a key role in many of the district’s revitalization efforts.

owners to help make good ideas become a reality in Downtown Fresno. It is critical that Fresno have a vibrant urban core...

This isn’t just a place for people who live in Fresno. It’s also the downtown for the rest of the Central Valley, and this region deserves to have a downtown that is a destination for large events and great entertainment.”

And the California High Speed Rail project promises to make Downtown Fresno a major stop, making the district even more accessible to all, Griffith said.

Because DFP is more likely to shine a spotlight on the businesses and organizations helping to make Downtown Fresno the pulsating intersection of business and community that it is, DFP’s own behind-the-scenes efforts aren’t always so readily recognized; but without its vision and ventures, so much of the visible progress and momentum toward revitalization of Downtown Fresno wouldn’t be where it is today.

T

here’s nothing quite like a summer afternoon or evening at the ballpark, whether you’re a starry-eyed 6-year-old kid or a 60 year old kid-at-heart. In the stands, a father might be explaining a curveball to his son or daughter while, right next to them, a young couple is creating the memory of their first date.

And, here in Fresno, there’s likely to be a spirited fan in the same row, proudly waving the bear flag in support of our Triple-A team, the Grizzlies. There’s a lot to be excited about this season, in addition to the prowess of the players: a whole new look for the team, a new major league affiliate and noteworthy improvements to an already state-of-the-art ballpark.

Located in the heart of Downtown Fresno, the modern fourlevel, three-tiered Chukchansi Park features dramatic views of the downtown skyline as well as the nearby Sierra Mountains.

Add to this picture $3.4 million in capital improvements for the 2019 season and it’s clear that Fresno has pulled out all the stops to ensure Chukchansi Park is a place where the emphasis is as much on entertainment as it is on baseball. New this season, the Fresno Social Space and Lounge is a top deck full-service bar that offers a premium experience without the usual premium 18 | Summer 2019

pricing – it’s open to any fan with a ticket. Here, families can play ping pong, corn hole or foosball while following the game on the field below, thanks to multiple large-screen televisions peppered throughout the lounge’s high-top seating. Meanwhile, the club level of the park now features “The Kodiak Club presented by KY Farming” and the funtastic Splash Park for kids.

“Growlifornia” Grizzlies came out swinging on opening day with new colors and a new ferocious-looking logo to cue the crowd that Fresno is a force to be reckoned with on the field. While the colors, coincidentally, are aligned with its new major league affiliate, the rebrand truly is about connecting with local culture — one marked by its passion, robust work ethic and loyalty to the home team.

Any baseball fan will tell you that each ballpark has a “special something” – a cheer, a ritual, a feature – that sets it apart from others, that says to visitors welcome to our neighborhood. So, what is Chukchansi Park’s special something?

Team President Derek Franks brings it back to the local culture, “One thing that’s unique here that we’re recognized for in the Central Valley, is our tacos. Our community’s diversity results in so many takes on the taco and each game we bring in at least one local family taco truck. So, when you come to a Grizzlies game, you’ve got to eat a taco!”

In past seasons, the team’s roster rockstars have included Bumgarner and Posey of the Giants, Correa and Bregman of the Astros. This season, Fresno is revved up about its new affiliate, The Washington Nationals — a high profile organization that, in addition to repeated appearances in playoffs and championships, has a long history of developing talent. Recent player development includes Juan Soto, who gave us the most runs driven in by a teenager in the majors since Mickey Mantle in 1951; Cy Young winner “Mad Max” Scherzer; and five-tool player Bryce Harper, whose recent $330 million contract made headlines around the world. Now, prospects include shortstop Carter Kierboom who already is getting spotlight attention. So, when you catch that homerun ball at Chukchansi, you’d better hold onto it: you never know who among the team will prove to be the next rising star and record-breaking player!

hat do you get when you cross gelato with a paleta? A delicious frozen confection unlike anything you have ever tasted! If you haven’t experienced the delectable gourmet ice pops from one of Pop’s Emporium’s stationary carts around town, then you are missing out!

These are not the bright red and blue popsicles that you remember from your childhood. Pop’s Emporium hand makes their gourmet popsicles in small batches using only the finest quality ingredients, including fresh fruit, real cream and very little added sugar. Forget boring old chocolate and strawberry, Pop’s most popular flavors include cappuccino, strawberry cheesecake, piña colada, cookies ’n cream, butter pecan caramel and tropical fruit trio. Incorporated in the various pops are whole chunks of fresh fruit and even whole Oreos.

Owner Aaron Ordaz, Jr. and his partners Jose M. Hernandez, Marco Garibay, Celestino Garibay and Alejandro Castillo are the team behind Pop’s Emporium. They combined their skills and passion for making a delicious quality product and turned them into a successful local business. Ordaz and his partners grew up in the Central Valley and have a great affinity for Fresno, which is why they chose to base their manufacturing plant here.

“Fresno is a great city. I love it here, all of my partners do,” Ordaz said.

Since their beginning in 2017, exceptional customer service has been a cornerstone of the business for Ordaz and his partners.

That dedication to their customers, in addition to making a quality product, has paid off by allowing them to expand their business.

This summer they will open Colosos Paleteria y Neveria, a retail shop in Selma that will sell popsicles, ice cream and a variety of traditional and nontraditional snack foods.

What makes Pop’s gourmet popsicles stand out is “the quality of ingredients and the taste,” Ordaz said. “Making a delicious popsicle for people’s enjoyment is our passion.”

This season (approximately May to October) you can find Pop’s Emporium carts on Thursdays at Downtown Hanford’s farmers market, Fridays at Old Town Clovis Farmers Market, and at Wild Waters Adventure Park. Pop’s will also be serving their frozen treats at the Fresno Home Remodeling and Decorating Show, July 19-21, 2019. In addition, they cater private events, including corporate functions, birthday parties and weddings, among others.
