Congratulations to our winners he Fresno Bee has published the Annual People’s Choice awards for more than a decade. During that time, the businesses that make up the heart of our community have weathered financial hardships, recessions and a quickly changing retail landscape. We’ve seen some well-loved friends close up shop and we’ve seen new businesses rise up, grow and succeed. We’ve seen a lot. But we’ve never seen anything like this. Nobody saw this one coming. COVID-19 has thrown our entire world into chaos. We’ve seen our streets empty overnight. And we know what that has cost you, our community and our business friends. It would have been an easy thing to decide not to publish People’s Choice this year, given that many of the winners listed here are temporarily closed as we all shelter in place. We chose instead to celebrate the businesses listed here because they are our Valley favorites, places that have earned our trust and our loyalty. It is our responsibility to let them know that even though it is tough right now, we appreciate all they have done for our community in the past, and what they are doing now in the midst of this crisis. The 10,000-square-foot cultural center is recognized as a key stakeholder working to redefine downtown Fresno. It hosts seasonal Friday night concerts, Nights in the Plaza, as well as ArtHop on the first Thursday of each month. New for the 2020 season, a drought-tolerant garden and concrete floor were added to the Plaza. The family-friendly events and exhibits feature local and international artists with talents that celebrate Latino arts. There are performances by Flamenco, folklorico and mariachi ensembles, and presentations by poets, authors, writers and novelists.

The recent renovation includes a redesign to the pier’s plaza area and a newly created stage area with “flex spaces” for farmers markets and public events.
