About Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival

每 年 一 度「 鮮 浪 潮 國 際 短 片 節 」 ( 由 鮮 浪 潮

電 影 節 有 限 公 司 主 辦 ), 旨 在 推 動 本 地 電 影 及短片創作,發掘及培養具潛質的年輕電影 創作人才。「第十六屆鮮浪潮國際短片節」

將 於 2022 年 6 月 17 日 至 7 月 17 日 舉 行, 假 油 麻 地 百 老 匯 電 影 中 心、 PREMIERE ELEMENTS 及 高 先 電 影 院, 放 映 共 40 部

作品。放映作品包括開幕電影馬可克魯茲沛 納 導 演 的《 被 消 失 的 公 義 》、 1 部 上 � 鮮 浪

潮 大 獎 得 主 的 開 幕 短 片、 14 部 本 地 競 賽 * 短 片 及 24 部 精 選 國 際 短 片 * * 。 所 有 作 品 將 分 成 11 個 節 目 及 主 題。 閉 幕 暨 頒 獎 典 禮 預 期

於 6 月 25 日舉行,屆時將揭曉「本地競賽」 部分的得獎名單。

The competition is open to aspiring filmmakers aged between 18 and 35. After the selection by a panel of professional jurors, selected candidates would each receive a subsidy of one hundred thousand Hong Kong Dollars for the production of a short film of 10 to 30 minutes long, to be screened at the Festival. Awards are presented for Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay, Best Director and Fresh Wave Award to the best short films.

短片節致力與國際電影組織合作,將優秀的國際短片搬上大銀 幕,加強本港與海外電影之文化交流。今年合作單位包括︰國 際影視院校聯會、台北金馬電影學院、Pia 影展、高雄拍及日 本電影新方向(ndjc)。

Organised by Fresh Wave Film Festival Limited (Fresh Wave), the Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival takes place annually, with the aim to promote and encourage local short film production, and to discover and nurture young talents. The 16th Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival will be held from 17 June to 17 July 2022, screening a total of 40 films, accompanied by sharing sessions with local filmmakers, at Broadway Cinematheque, PREMIERE ELEMENTS and Golden Scene Cinema. Featured programmes include: Opening Film, The Collini Case directed by Marco KREUZPAINTNER, 1 Opening Short by the previous winner of Fresh Wave Award, 14 short films from the Local Competition* and 24 from the International Selection**. All the works are categorised into 11 programmes with various themes. The Closing and Awards Presentation Ceremony is tentatively scheduled on 25 June where the winners of the Local Competition will be announced.

To foster exchange between local and international film cultures and broaden the vision of local film practitioners and audience, the Festival collaborates with overseas film festivals and organisations, Including the International Association of Film and Television Schools (CILECT), Taipei Golden Horse Film Academy (GHFA), Pia Film Festival, Kaohsiung Shorts and New Directions in Japanese Cinema (ndjc)

今屆「鮮浪潮」可謂別具意義,在全球疫 情 持 續 下 依 然 迎 難 而 上, 堅 定 不 移 地 舉

辦 短 片 節。 疫 情 陰 霾 久 久 不 散, 線 上 放

映 已 儼 成 新 常 態, 各 行 各 業 受 到 前 所 未 有 的 衝 擊。 隨 着 網 絡 電 影 的 普 及, 大 家

可 以 安 坐 家 中 觀 賞 世 界 各 地 最 新 的 電 影, 而 各 大 國 際 影 展 亦 陸 續 改 為 在 網 上 舉 行, 電影人過去為創作所付出的,終與大銀幕 無緣,或多或少都有浪費的況味。我認為 電影是屬於電影院的,那種觀影體驗是無 可取替。

然 而, 戲 院 能 夠 重 開, 我 為 此 感 到 非 常

高 興, 所 有 電 影 從 業 員 及 觀 眾 終 於 可 以 釋 放 心 中 的 鬱 悶, 再 次 進 入 多 姿 彩、 奇

幻迷離的光影世界。但疫情的威脅尚在, 即使如此,我深信觀眾對能重回戲院深感 雀躍,我們也盼望藉此點燃大家對生活、 對電影的希望之燈。

This year’s ‘Fresh Wave’ can be said to be of special significance. Despite the ongoing pandemic, it has braced all the difficulties and persevered. Still living in the shadow of the pandemic, when online screenings have become the new normal, the industries are faced with unprecedented challenges. With the popularity of film streaming, when everyone can watch the latest film from all over the world in the comfort of their living rooms, major international film festivals have gradually moved online. And so the filmmakers, for all the hard work they have put into their creations, shall not see their works on the silver screen, and one cannot but feel a sense of regret. To me, film belongs in the cinema; nothing can replace that viewing experience. And yet I am very happy that the cinemas are finally reopening. Film practitioners and audiences can finally find some respite from the depression and once again indulge in the colourful and fantastic world of cinema. Even though the threat of pandemic still hovers, I am convinced that the audience is excited at the prospect of returning to the cinema, and we hope that this will ignite people’s hope for life and cinema. This year’s festival features a number of outstanding works selected for the Opening Film and Opening Short Film, Local Competition, Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film nominees, CILECT 2021’s Best Shorts, Kaohsiung Shorts and Taipei Golden Horse Film Academy, as well as works by emerging Japanese directors, to feast the eyes of film buffs. We wish a smooth sailing for this year’s festival, so that all can enjoy these shorts produced amidst all the hardships. It is no easy feat to pull off the festival in such a precarious environment. We thank the Home Affairs Bureau, Hong Kong Arts Development Council, Joseph Lau Luen Hung Charitable Trust, ViuTV, all our sponsors and partner organisations for their strong support. The continued development of Hong Kong cinema depends on the efforts of all our filmmakers, and we shall continue nurturing our young local directors and promote the development of Hong Kong cinema.

前言 Foreword 下筆前,在網絡上看到伊朗導演阿巴斯基阿 魯斯達米某次接受傳媒訪問時說的一段話:

Before writing this, I read on the Internet an interview of Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami, in which he said:

“Whenever I see a film, I ‘dissolve’ myself in it to such an extent that I reach the bottom. I fade out and perhaps I get lost in it. And this has played an essential role in my life.” 不 打 算 逐 字 翻 譯 這 番 話, 因 為 害 怕 一 些 意 思 會 lost in translation,大家可以自行仔細推 敲 一 下 它 的 深 義。 我 只 想 提 出 一 個 看 法, 就

是 阿 巴 斯 說 的「 I see a film」, 指 的 不 單 是

他「 看 ( 觀 賞 ) 一 部 電 影 」, 也 可 能 包 括「 構

思一部電影時,在想像中(腦海裡)看到的 (未

來 的 ) 電 影 」。 於 前 者, 是 鑑 賞 的 行 為; 於 後 者, 則 是 創 作 的 原 點 了。 至 於 如 何「 溶 入 」 電 影 裡, 浸 淫 於 其 中, 並 一 往 到 底? 他 沒 說。 這 個「 如 何 」, 也 就 是「 方 法 」, 是 學

習 最 需 要 掌 握 的 東 西, 也 是 不 少 � � � � � 每每在起步時就已經想得到的「指南」、「錦

囊 」。 但 其 實「 方 法 」 只 是 把 經 驗 結 合、 整 理 出 來 的 一 些 步 驟, 可 能 適 用 於 某 些 人, 卻

非放諸天下而皆準,更重要的是每個人必須 要 透 過「 實 踐 」 和「 檢 驗 」, 才 能 變 成 以 後

可 以 依 據 的 模 式。「 方 法 」 非 一 成 不 變。 它

需 要 定 期 更 新, 需 要 按 照 客 觀 環 境 和 條 件 而 調整,否則只會是一套「方程式」。

「Dissolve」 一 字, 很 容 易 又 教 我 們 聯 想 起 水。「 溶 入 」 其 中, 不 就 是 變 成 為 水 嗎? 一 理通,百理明,不就是這個意思嗎? 互勉,是為序。

Fearing lest something should be lost in translation, I have no intention to translate these words verbatim. The reader may feel free to scrutinise its meaning. I just want to suggest that when Abbas said ‘I see a film,’ perhaps he was not only referring to ‘seeing (watching) a film,’ but also that ‘when I think about a film, I see a (future) film in the imagination (of my mind).’ The former is an act of appreciation; the latter the origin of creation. He said nothing about how one might ‘dissolve’ oneself in the film and reach the bottom. The ‘how’, i.e. ‘method’, is the most important thing for one to grasp, the ‘guide’ and ‘tip’ many new filmmakers covet. But in fact ‘method’ is only procedures elaborated from experience, applicable to some but not all. It is more crucial that each develops a model through ‘practice’ and ‘examination’ that will serve as a reference for future application. The ‘method’ is not set in stone, but has to be updated regularly and adjusted according to the objective environment and conditions. Otherwise it would only be a set of ‘formula’. The word ‘dissolve’ also reminds one of water. To ‘dissolve’ is to be water. Grasp this one thing and you will grasp everything. And thus I end this foreword with a note of encouragement to all.

馬可克魯茲沛納 (德國),於奧地利薩爾斯堡大學修讀藝術史,1998 年起擔 任電影導演助理。拍攝過幾部短片後,於 2003 年首執劇情長片導筒。同 志電影《我的夏日戀曲》(2004) 於慕尼黑國際電影節 2004 獲「觀眾票選 獎」,並受邀到全球五十個影展放映。影片獲名導演羅倫艾默烈治青睞,委 託他執導《走私人口》(2007),由奇雲格連主演。《鬼磨坊》(2008) 於德 國電影獎獲多項提名。2009 年他於柏林成立了製作公司「Summerstorm Entertainment」,並拍攝喜�《歡迎光臨愛情沙龍》(2014)。他的電視 劇首作《緊急呼叫 110》(2016) 亦備受讚賞及獲多項獎項肯定。 Marco KREUZPAINTNER (Germany) studied Art History in the University of Salzburg and then worked from 1998 onwards as an assistant to film directors. After finishing several short films, his first feature film was released in 2003. His next film Summer Storm (2004) won the Audience Award at the Munich International Film Festival in 2004. The film was invited to 50 film festivals around the globe. Roland Emmerich was so impressed and entrusted him with directing Trade (2007) starring Kevin Kline. Krabat (2008) was nominated for the German Film Award in several categories. In 2009, he founded the production company Summerstorm Entertainment in Berlin, making the comedy Coming In (2014). He made a critically acclaimed TV debut with the award-winning Polizeiruf 110 (2016) episode.

Respected industrial magnate Hans MEYER is murdered in his Berlin hotel suite. Suspect Fabrizio COLLINI surrenders on the spot but remains silent. Young lawyer Caspar LEINEN takes over the case and defends COLLINI, and finds that the victim is his own adoptive father. Faced with the recalcitrant COLLINI, LEINEN decides to pursue justice and sets out to investigate the case, only to unveil a painful history in which the state is the real murderer and the law its biggest accomplice. This masterpiece by Marco KREUZPAINTNER evokes Costa-GAVRAS's Z (1969) and The Missing (1982): Taking politics as its theme, it combines elements of drama, mystery and thriller, fully exploiting the power of storytelling in the exposition of propositions. It reminds us once again why for the past eight decades the West has never stopped making films about the Holocaust. As human beings, we must never forget and forgive those who have committed the gravest crimes in human history; never must we let justice go or be misplaced, to be used as a tool to obfuscate justice and truth, that which we call the law.

Wan-yu goes on a farewell trip with her close friend Jack, seeing him off to the airport. During the drive, they ruminate on the departure and the resulting ruptured relationship. Before leaving, Jack entrusts his car to Wan-yu. Underneath Wan-yu’s calm and almost indifferent façade lies a hidden anxiety and confusion, for other than the car, she has to deal with another more complicated problem of her own. Shot as a conversation in a car, the short’s claustrophobic atmosphere heightens the helplessness of the characters. From director Wong Fei, winner of the 15th Fresh Wave Award, comes a quiet and contemplative piece about making difficult decisions amid drastic changes in life.

Lisa SALLUSTIO ( 比 利 時 ), 於 布 魯 塞 爾 讀 政 治 科 學,2011 年 � 入 國 立 表 演 藝 術 與 廣 播 技 術 高 等 學 院, 於 2016 年 加 入 法 國 國 家 影 像 與 聲 音 職 業 學 院 的 電 影 部 門。 除 了 舞 台 劇 創 作, 她 也 執 導 短 片 及 紀 錄 片。 Lisa SALLUSTIO (Belgium) studied political science in Brussels before entering INSAS in theatre staging in 2011. She integrated the filmmaking department at La Fémis in 2016. She wrote theatrical forms and directed short films and documentaries.

鯨魚卻久久未寫成論文,既未畢業也不專業,為得到 失業保險,他決定接受拔圖釘工作,在一幢空蕩蕩的

神秘大樓內日以繼夜拔個片甲不留,與同樣為揾快錢

而來的 Rose 互相勉勵支持,但沒完沒了刻板重複的任 務卻令他們身心俱疲,幾近崩潰。宛如《天使愛美麗》

(2001) 般的格局置入一對神經質男女,在迷離境界中 啟發彼此,拔出埋藏心中已久的隱刺,並為自由奮鬥 衝刺。奇幻風格襯托懸疑驚慄,恍如向法國名導里奧 卡哈斯致敬。

Berlioz has studied oceanography for a very long time. Armed with an unfinished thesis, he is both ‘over-graduated’ and under-qualified. Like the whales, the topic of his research, his prospects are bleak indeed. In order to be eligible for unemployment insurance, Berlioz accepts a job offer which consists of removing innumerous push pins from the wall in a mysterious building. Working alongside him is Rose who is desperate for money. As they work on this unusual assignment of trying repetitiveness day after day, plagued by insomnia and exhaustion and on the brink of insanity, strange incidents in the middle of the night lie in wait for them… Adorably surreal on a par with the works of Leo CARAX.

張浩霆,曾就讀美國薩凡納藝術設計學院, 並獲獎學金進入導演學系,其後回港參與廣 告及微電影製作的工作。 Andre CHEUNG studied Film and Television and received scholarship to study film directing at SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design). He came back to Hong Kong and participated in commercial and short film productions.

Traumatised by the doomed rights movement in Garan, former activist Decem seeks refuge and solitude in the forest, fleeing his homeland and all those he held dear. Relief is however short-lived. As time passes, nostalgia and loneliness creep upon the exiled youth. Decem remains trapped in recurrent nightmares of the past and continues to plunge into despair, living with a constant sense of peril. The challenges of living in the forest along with the wildfire in the mountains eventually make him reconsider the path ahead. Mirroring the disturbed youth’s inner turmoil with the sinister wild nature, the psychological drama relates the tormented state of the exiled body and soul.

Roaming the streets of his neighbourhood, troubled teen Malcolm decides to steal a pair of sunglasses from a shop. As the boy escapes from the crime scene, what has first seemed to be a rash act of teenage defiance eventually reveals to be one that is deliberate and contemplated. Vignettes of domestic life, subtle exchanges and steely gazes hint to the anguish of a young boy caught in the complexities of the adult world. When the delinquent act is later unveiled to be part of a much bigger plan, a darker narrative emerges onto the surface. Unassumingly powerful, the short almost evokes the works by Ken Loach.

Night-shift security guard 36649 is a model employee who will be dismissed on New Year’s Day. On the very same day, street light 36649 is to be removed. Dismayed by the prospect of losing his soulmate, human 36649 reaches out to street light 36649 through a mysterious phone number, and is invited to a local-global journey amid the pandemic. A journey of the two 36649s unfolds as they travel around the world filled with wonders, which is also a voyage of self-discovery for human 36649. A loving tribute to WONG Kar-wai, the short is stylised and loaded with references to the beloved director of Hong Kong.

As the temperature rises, holiday crowds swarm the beach like thirsty animals. All of a sudden, summer hits blasting from the speakers are replaced by an announcement of two missing boys. A confused search begins, and gradually the gravity of the situation dawns on all parties when the unimaginable becomes reality. As the helpless parents look o n a n x i o u s l y, t h e st a f f re f u s e to a ss u m e a ny responsibility, while the dispersing crowd move along nonchalantly, indifferent what is happening in front of them. Based on a real event, the short forces the audience to question the banality of evil in all of us.

In a small town, the funeral of a matriarch brings about the reunion of family members, many returning to the village after leading new lives elsewhere, some no longer speaking the language of the native land. With the passage of time, the big clan becomes fragmented as members, like other modern Chinese in mainland China, face changes in lives, ideals, and family structures. The occasion becomes a hot ground for deals and negotiations that are inevitable amid the rapid development of China, where family members prosper while relationships become calculated. Still, a funeral procession amid an impending storm requires them, already down different paths, to walk together.

The Winter Solstice has been for the Chinese an important family occasion; however, will this timehonoured tradition become obsolete? The children head back to their family home in the country to see their elderly mother. All seems well on the surface, but each faces their own crisis and difficulty: The eldest brother struggles to raise several kids; the well off second sister plans to leave Hong Kong; estranged from her husband, the younger sister keeps up appearances; and the youngest brother commits to the difficult career as a farmer. The cheerful, animated conversation at the dinner table is overshadowed by simmering anxieties.

Ram is an undocumented Indian-Muslim immigrant who manages to survive as a labourer in Singapore. In his latest odd job working at the cemetery, he works alongside Thanh, another young undocumented immigrant from Indonesia. Scarcely understanding a word of each other, the two escape when the police suddenly arrive at the cemetery. Ram soon finds the guileless boy a burden. Barely able to sustain himself, Ram has on the one hand to abandon the young boy, who looks up to him as a bigger brother, to certain doom, and on the other to seek help from his other brother. The short sheds light on the immigrant community in Singapore, their struggles and sporadic moments of solidarity.

Ashes are all that remain when someone dies, as the rest of us carry on with the remembrance of the past, in the form of things that continue to burden us. Granny Di makes a meagre living out of recycling cardboard and found objects on the street, carrying the ashes of her late husband wherever she goes. As the going gets tough, she is reduced to stealing and selling sacrificial offerings from the funeral home. Ellen Liu plays the desolate and desperate Granny Di, rendering a lively and moving performance with a human touch. The short brings us through the nooks and crannies of Hung Hom district, chronicling a sorrowful tale about forsaken old age.

Amid changing times, as friends and relatives are leaving the city one after the other, our once familiar neighbourhood is becoming foreign. Yeung Por Por has her luggage packed for the one-way flight out of the city with her son. During her final hours in Hong Kong, she goes to the Wan Chai seaside and is shocked to find a barricaded construction site. Following Rhea, her domestic helper to the latter’s Filipino community, Yeung Por Por realises what it means to be uprooted from one’s homeland. Subtly and wistfully, the film relates the difficulties and dilemmas of migration, closing with ‘You Said We’d Be Back’ by the folk-rock duo My Little Airport.

Thousands of young women are being kidnapped in the name of tradition in Kyrgyzstan. Sezim, a motivated and independent girl about to enroll in college with a scholarship, falls victim to ‘Ala Kachuu’(bride kidnap) and is forced to marry a complete stranger, in the middle of nowhere. Empathy is the last thing Sezim can find in her immediate surroundings; even her parents show no objection to the marriage and urge Sezim to be an obedient wife. The short is an eloquent indictment against an atrocity that is still in practice somewhere in the world, at the same time expressing a wish for a society where women can determine their own fate.

Smoker, a prefect in a boarding school, maintains order with weed and terror. Within the confines of the school, we witness a twisted version of a coming of age story of unbridled violence in the name of law and order, culminating tragically to the death of the bullied Dickhead. As the incident escalates and things go astray, Smoker faces a moral dilemma: Should he clear himself of further corruption, or should he act as an accomplice of the authorities? Stylistically extravagant, the short uses the secondary school as a metaphor to underpin the absurdity and brutality in ‘the worst of times.’

Unexpectedly evicted from his house during his birthday celebration, Erki is suddenly faced with the difficult tasks of taking care of his sickly mother, making money, settling the debt and retrieving the apartment. Reluctantly, he begins his new job as a corpse carrier, transporting bodies from their places of death to the morgue. It is hard enough for the young boy to face all manners of death up close, and Erki’s ruthless colleague Ott only adds to the misery. A tragicomedy filmed like a road movie, the short reflects on the passage from life to death, a harsh yet necessary rite of passage for the young.

Death is a moment whose reverberation endures for the living. Three students from the Audio-Visual team are shooting a documentary on a schoolmate who has recently committed suicide. It is intended to convey a ‘positive message’ to the entire school about the importance of life. During interviews, the students notice some discrepancies in the testimonies, particularly those by a prefect and a teacher, while friends of the deceased seem to be withholding some inconvenient truth. Should the team pursue the truth, or act as the school’s propagandist? Filmed in a mocumentary style, The Handbook of Suicide Prevention challenges and exposes the hypocrisy and suppression that haunt adolescence.

At first glance, Grandma MUI and Uncle CHEUNG look just like another ordinary elderly couple loitering outside a school wall. Grandma MUI is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and her conditions deteriorate notably after the death of her granddaughter Kaching from a fall off the school building, with the school officials suspected of negligence and being dishonest in their testimony. Stricken by grief, Grandma MUI’s mind falls into complete chaos as memories, delusions and reality mesh together. Uncle CHEUNG, indirectly connected to Ka-ching’s death, lacks the courage to tell the truth. As an act of atonement, he takes care of Grandma MUI even when the future looks bleak…

Martin STRANGE-HANSEN (Denmark) is a director and screenwriter. He made his debut Feeding Desire in 2001. His second short This Charming Man (2002) won Best Live Action Short at the 74th Oscars.

靜, 憔 悴 的 Henrik 卻 跑 進 來 要 一 杯 雙 份 的 威 士 忌, 十足十那種大白天就要買醉的流浪漢。他轉身看到卡 啦 OK 點 唱 機, 又 馬 上 要 求 唱 貓 王 名 曲〈Always on My Mind〉, 還 偏 執 地 明 言 未 唱 一 曲 之 前, 死 也 不 肯

走。這個表面上像是意圖鬧事的莽漢,背後實在有個 哀傷動人的隱衷。電影在簡單的酒吧室內空間,透過

Henrik、酒吧老闆和侍應的互動不斷製造懸念和張力,

將一個有關生死與思念的故事,濃縮在短暫而戲劇化 的處境之中。

Henrik, a soft-spoken yet romantic middle-aged man crashes into an empty bar on a Tuesday morning. After ordering two shots of whiskey, he notices the karaoke system and requests to sing Elvis Presley’s ‘Always on My Mind’, insistent to a point that he refuses to leave the bar before the song is sung in full. As the short unfolds, we gradually come to the realisation that the song is a matter of life and death. Happening mostly in one scene with only three characters, On My Mind is a heart-breaking tale that encapsulates the unbearable weight of death and parting in a concise dramatic construction.

Julia is afflicted by her short stature and has never known the taste of being a normal, average person. Working at a wayside motel and leading a solitary life, Julia spends most of her time on the slot machine and heavy metal music. One day, she spots a handsome truck driver stealing glances at her. Trying to make conversation, he says he will return in four days. Julia, surprised and distraught at the idea that a man shows interest in her, determines to find an impeccable dress to win her the dream lover. The short delicately delineates Julia’s emotional turbulence, engaging the audience in this intense story of desire and pain.

Upon notification of her father’s passing due to COVID, Jia-ling returns to Taipei from abroad to take care of the funeral as well as the deceased’s apartment. An unexpected knock on the door leads to her encounter with CHEN Hsiung, an old man with mild dementia who lives alone and who mistakes Jia-ling for his married daughter living far away. The two strangers strike up an unlikely relationship and experience vignettes of family life together. In the congregate housing under the shadow of the pandemic, two lonely souls rediscover the long-lost feeling of companionship, even if in fleeting moments.

還是需要天天貼身照顧。從兒子的早晚三餐到洗澡如 廁,母親都要親力親為,但她的身體日漸衰弱,面對 兒子三不五時的奇行異狀,更是心力交瘁。一天,母

親帶兒子坐摩托車,遠路跋涉去看海。那一片勁風狂 濤吹拍的大海,對母親來說,是旅程的終站,也將會

是生命的終站。電影透過相依為命的兩母子,寫出一

段欲斷難斷的親密關係,日復日的生活猶如無盡而絕 望的煎熬。飾演母親的陸弈靜低調沉鬱,精彩演出貫 穿全片,在末尾更迸發出一點希望之光。

A grey-headed mother, instead of living a restful retired life, still struggles daily taking meticulous care of her mentally challenged full-grown son. As her own physical body gradually declines, it will not be long before the mother has to leave her son on his own. One day, mother and son take a trip to the sea which, screaming ferocious waves and blasts, is to be the final destination of their protracted journey. Focusing on the intimacy between mother and son, the short portrays the desolation and sufferings of the unfortunate. LU Yi-ching’s understated performance as the mother pulls the short together brilliantly, shining through with a glimpse of hope at the very end.

Jhong wakes up and finds himself dead. He watches his wife and children discuss his death over breakfast. Jhong’s son fears that his mother will be charged with manslaughter, the police officer arriving at the scene sees Jhong’s spirit, while Jhong’s wife insists on taking Jhong’s body for a final walk on the riverbank. Jhong’s family who never paid much attention to what Jhong had to say can finally hear his mind now that he is dead. Bai, a young woman from Hong Kong, leaves for Kaohsiung in the autumn of 2019, hoping to start anew. While working there, she meets Hei, another expatriate from Japan also seeking a second life abroad. The romance between the two blossoms on the beach, at their workplace and in the lonesome night alley, amid exchanges of ambiguous intimacy in Mandarin and Japanese. Yet back in their room they are embarrassed and caught off guarded by their own unspeakable secrets: Both are fugitives escaping from their own realities. With casual and delicate touches, Plain Sailing is more than an ordinary boymeets-girl story: a contemplation of trauma, longing and the individual’s responsibility in a tumultuous epoch.

Set in late 1990s, young girl Fen resettles in Los Angeles with her mother and younger sister Ann, swaying between the liberal, vibrant American pop culture and the enclosed, traditional atmosphere of the Taiwanese nuclear family. Her first day at church is not her day: Ann breaks her butterfly hairpin that morning and the other children at church keep their distance. Yet all is not only children’s sorrows: behind closed doors tensions simmer within the newly arrived young family, stranger in a foreign land that speaks another language. A precursor to her debut feature American Girl (2021), Fiona ROAN FengI’s short excels at observing minute details in the household, endowing emotional force to even the slightest body gesture.

In every taxi driver there is a cowboy. Refusing to be confined at home during the pandemic, Da-wei tries in every possible way to get back on the road with his beloved taxi. Yet his adventure is besieged with setbacks, when money is needed to repair his brokendown taxi, and his attempts to seek assistance from his wife and son switch between dark comedy and drama. Perhaps what needs repairing is not just Dawei’s taxi but also his stagnant family relationship. Will Da-wei eventually overcome all the obstacles to accomplish this heroic journey that no one witnesses?

Can you imagine celluloid, on which Film is engraved, coming to life? The short juxtaposes interview segments with WU Bi-yu, actress of the first Taiwanese Hokkien film Xue Ping-gui and Wang Baochuan (1955), and a series of surreal scenarios that allude to the many lives and deaths of analog film stock. Characters symbolising the Son of Film, the Spirit of the Camphor Tree and the Projectionist wander through the abandoned cinema, brick factory and forest, transporting the audience to a magical realm with abstract physical theatre performance and mesmerising imagery. This is a homage to the forgotten history of Taiwanese cinema, and a contemplation on the nature of cinema.

Granny Chie recounts a tale about photography, national trauma and adolescent love during the postwar era to her granddaughter. In Kaohsiung, March 1947, little Chie spent her time with her teenage sister Iòng-hâ, Iòng-hâ’s admirer Kong-suī, and their high school pals, strolling by the beach as they hummed the Japanese folk song ‘Canary’, carefree. When Kuomintang retreated to Taiwan and assumed governance there, students like Kong-suīīand Iònghâ formed Self-Defense Forces and fought for autonomy, ending with countless killed and missing, an unspeakable dark episode that has been haunting Taiwanese history for decades. The short reconstructs a little known event in Kaohsiung during the February 28 incident.

Set in the near future, an old man takes his grandson Sammy on a long journey. Travelling from the far south, his sole purpose is to visit his only son, a longdetained political prisoner charged with secession and subversion. A subdued conversation ensues as the incarcerated tries to communicate with his silent son. Before the time is up and he is taken away, he pleads: ‘My son, do not let them make you forget me.’ The desperate roar is his last reactionary appeal echoing under the peaceful silence of the new order. Shot in black-and-white, this cautionary tale by director WU Zi-en is written out of imagination for the future and the resolution to never forget.

Tetsu lives his craft as a juggler 24/7, tossing whatever comes by him, wherever he be. When his girlfriend, sick of the non-stop juggling, kicks him out, Tetsu chances upon a cleaner position in the park. His new colleague Midori is a cynical and grumpy middleaged woman who has worked for two decades cleaning up other people’s mess. Gradually, Midori is won over by Tetsu’s incredible juggling-cleaning stunts and the two settles down to a comfortable routine. When budget cuts threaten this newly established routine, however, Midori makes a decision. Hachiro, a professional juggler who performed at the closing ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, shines in a performance reminiscent of silent film classics.

Megumi is an ordinary office lady who, at 29, is still single. She is increasingly frightened of being alone for the rest of her life. Fearing lest she will not be married by 30 and becoming another Satoko, Megumi goes to a matchmaking agency, but soon grows tired of the match-makings, and becomes even more confused. Hairdresser ASAKO and her boyfriend MORI who has a temporary job delivering pizza, have been living together for five years, sharing a stagnant coexistence with little passion and financial stability yet not entirely loveless. After ASAKO announces her pregnancy, the two pay a visit to ASAKO’s colleague and friend. Looking at the happy young family, MORI feels something changing within him and resolves to become a good father and put his former dandying lifestyle behind him. However, ASAKO does not seem very impressed by MORI’s will to change. In the meantime, a girl called MINAMI appears at the hair salon where ASAKO works. That same night Asako makes a confession to MORI.

Michael BERRY (USA) is a translator and author who is Professor of Contemporary Chinese Cultural Studies and Director of the Center for Chinese Studies at UCLA. He has written and edited eight books on Chinese literature and cinema, including Speaking in Images: Interviews with Contemporary Chinese Filmmakers, A History of Pain: Trauma in Modern Chinese Literature and Film, Jia Zhangke on Jia Zhangke and The Musha Incident: A Reader on the Indigenous Uprising in Colonial Taiwan. He has served as a film consultant and a juror for numerous film festivals, including the Golden Horse Awards and the Fresh Wave International Short Film Festival. A two-time National Endowment for the Arts Translation Fellow, his book-length translations include The Song of Everlasting Sorrow: A Novel of Shanghai by WANG An-yi, shortlisted for the Man Booker International Prize, To Live by YU Hua, a selection in the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read library, and Wuhan Diary: Dispatches from a Quarantined City by FANG Fang.

She was selected by the South China Morning Post as one of Hong Kong’s 25 most inspirational and influential women. She has won Hong Kong Drama Awards (Best Script) for six times. The Robert N.N. Ho Family Foundation awarded Candace its Fellowship for Outstanding Hong Kong Writers, which supported her participation in the renowned International Writing Program in Iowa in 2021. Apart from writing spoken drama, Candace is also a translator of plays. She also participates in musical theatre as a book writer and librettist.

HOU Chi-jan (Taiwan) is a film director and screenwriter based in Taipei. His works are known for its poetic quality with the recurrent themes of time and memory and were selected by renowned film festivals such as Berlinale, Busan International Film Festival, Tokyo International Film Festival, IFFR etc. He made his first documentary short, My 747, in 2004. It won Asian New Force Grand Prix at ifva, Hong Kong. His feature debut, One Day (2010), premiered at the Berlinale Forum. His subsequent works include When a Wolf Falls in Love with a Sheep (2012) and Poetries from the Bookstores (2014). Ode to Time (2016), his latest feature documentary, competed in the Asian Future at the Tokyo International Film Festival.

SZETO Cheuk-hon started his career as a journalist for Kung Sheung Daily/Evening News and Wah Kiu Man Po after graduation from secondary school in 1973. Since 1978 he served as a situation comedies and drama series screenwriter for Commercial Television, Rediffusion Television, TVB and RTHK. Over the years, he has been writing screenplays for around 40 movies. In early 1990s he returned to ATV and worked as a script superviser and creative director for variety shows like The Mad Mad Comedians for about a year. His latest film was The Sorcerer and The White Snake (2011), starring Jet Li. In recent years, he starts screenwriting of TV drama series in the Greater China market.

XU Yuan (China) is the founder of Shanghai-based cinephile group Film 101 Studio, aiming at promoting film culture and screening independent films. He was the cofounder and chief editor of Digital Entertainment DVD Guide. He became the consultant for the Shanghai International Film Festival since 2007 and artistic director of the Shanghai Art Film Federation since 2015. His published works include Korean Cinema: from Origins to Renaissance.

Taipei Golden Horse Film Academy (GHFA) 由侯孝賢導演一手策劃催生的金馬電影學 院,14 年 來 拔 擢 超 過 百 位 學 員, 提 供 文 化背景各異其趣的華語電影創作者一個創 意交流平台,分享彼此對於電影的看法, 碰撞出別具一格的觀點,並邀請影壇前輩 傳承經年累月淬鍊的經驗,觸發學員更豐 沛的創作能量與宏觀視野。最後以集體創 作方式合作拍攝短片,在金馬影展隆重首 映,與觀眾分享電影學院的豐碩成果。

Taipei Golden Horse Film Academy (GHFA) founded by director Hou Hsiao-hsien has nurtured hundreds of talented filmmakers in the past 14 years. It offers a platform for the Chinese-speaking filmmakers with varied cultural backgrounds to exchange their ideas and unique perspectives, along with industry veterans sharing their profound knowledge and experience to reach for a broader horizon. By the end of the course, the short films collectively made by the participants are premiered at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival to showcase their dedicated work.

Kaohsiung Shorts 以打造高雄成為台灣短片基地為目標,鼓 勵短片創作並發掘適合新媒體 (網路、行動 等) 傳播與映演之創新作品,高雄市電影館 特提出「高雄拍」短片獎助計劃,立意於 打破規範、打破界限、打破陳腔濫調,強 調短片影像美學之創新與新媒體應用,鼓 勵影像創作人才進駐高雄市,以高雄為發 想及創作場域,影像創作不拘形式、主題, 盡情揮灑創意、展現在地特色,並在電影 節期間以「高雄拍」單元中全臺首映。自 2015 年起陸續將「高雄拍」短片帶至國外 香港、法國、日本、韓國及越南等地,與 影展單位、當地團體洽談放映合作。

With the goal to become the “Taiwan's Short Film Base", Kaohsiung Film Archive presents “Kaohsiung Shorts". This program, which based on Kaohsiung with local features, intends to break the norm and traditions. We award creators with potential, encouraging them to tell any kinds of story with any kinds of new technology. After all the films are finished, they will have a global premiere in Kaohsiung Film Festival, which is the biggest international short film competition in Taiwan held by Kaohsiung Film Archive.

New Directions in Japanese Cinema (ndjc) ndjc 由日本文化廳委任映像產業振興機構 經營,作為推廣日本電影及製作的政策之 一。計劃關注年輕電影人才,並設多種工 作坊傳授電影知識和電影製作技巧,務求 以實戰的形式磨練他們的技術及創意。計 劃的長遠目標冀發掘及促進下一代電影導 演發展其劇情長片。自 2006 至 2021 年, 已 有 77 位 電 影 導 演 透 過 此 計 劃 完 成 他 們 的短片。 www.vipo-ndjc.jp

ndjc is operated by VIPO (Visual Industry Promotion Organization) and commissioned by the Agency for Cultural Affairs as part of its policy to promote Japanese film and filmmaking. The project focuses on talented young filmmakers and offer them real filmmaking skills through workshops. By imparting the necessary knowledge and techniques, it aims at polishing up their filmmaking techniques and creativity. The long-term goal is to discover and foster the next generation of feature-length film directors. Since 2006 to 2021, 77 filmmakers have directed their short films in the project.
