I hope you had a wonderful festive season and took the chance for at least a little break to rejuvenate yourself so that you’re ready and rearing for a super 2013! I’ve just returned from a 3-week holiday in Thailand with my family and what a wonderful time we had. I was about to present two days of training for our new franchisees and I just wanted to be the best I could at presenting. So when a spot came up in her Melbourne program, of course, I jumped at it.

MAN OF STYLE AND SUBSTANCE HOW TO WEAR YOUR PANTS!

BY ROBIN POWIS Men are becoming more discerning in the way they dress.! They want to look sophisticated and stylish.! If your look is letting you down follow these tips on trousers and pants.!

Always go for a quality fabric and you can’t beat wool for look, feel and durability. !

Trousers are considered more formal and sit on the natural waist, while pants are less formal and can sit slightly below the natural waist.! !

Fit – The pant should fit smoothly across the stomach, hips and buttocks.! The waist should sit at the natural waist never under the stomach or pulled too high.! Pockets should not pull open.! The back of the pant should fall smoothly over the curve of the buttocks and fall in a straight line to the floor.! There should be no hugging under the bottom or too much excess fabric under the buttocks.

Pleats – Pleats add bulk and extra kilos although they are considered a more formal look.! Pleats should not pull open while standing and should fall straight from the hip down the leg.

Length – Pants should be long enough to cover the socks when in full stride and fall in a straight

line off the behind.! There should be a single break of the pant on the shoe.

Width – Straight leg trousers are flattering on most men.! Cuffs add weight to the bottom and help define the pleat’s crease.! Cuffs should be 4.25cm wide for men under 160cm and 4.75cm for men over 160cm.! They should not be worn by short men as they decrease your apparent height.!

THE 7 SECRETS TO PITCHING FOR NEW BUSINESS

BY MICHELLE BOWDEN So you’ve made the decision to go out on your own and build a business that all yours – congratulations! From the outset there are so many things to get your head around, from branding to stock control and of course you need to become brilliant at pitching for business too. There’s nothing surer, if you can fast-track your ability to bring new clients in the door and keep them as loyal clients you’ll be creating very strong foundations for your start up business.

So what do you need to do to fast track your pitching skills?

Here are my 7 secrets to pitching to new clients: 1. Relationship. Business is all about the relationships you create and maintain. Always remember it’s about the people doing business with people and learn to care about your potential client from the outset and make people feel good. Zig Ziglar said, ‘They don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care’. Listen when your client talks (never talk over the top of them), clarify where necessary so you really understand what they are asking you for and present a solution that meets their needs. So make sure you get your head right. If you go into a sales meeting wanting to ‘make money’ you’ll be barefoot on that pavement in no time! It’s not about the money, it’s about finding solutions to people’s problems. If you get this right in your head you’ll be selling ice to eskimos in no time.

2. Brand. We all know the value of a positive first impression and never is this more important that when you meet potential clients for the first time. Latest research by Sally Hogshead www.michellebowden.com.au

suggests it takes only 9 seconds to form a first impression and then a further 25 seconds to confirm that initial impression. So it’s critical to do some serious thinking about how you are perceived by potential clients from your website, to your phone manner, to your collateral and brochures, to your personal presentation and your personality. Once you’ve assessed your current impact it’s time to rethink any image issues that don’t make you an instant winner.

3. Believe. Confidence is very enticing to others.

Make sure you know your product or services inside out and spend some time getting to know your client prior to arriving at the meeting.

Prepare your pitch in advance and practice, practice, practice. There’s nothing like knowing your stuff to make you feel confident and in control. And while you’re at it research your competitors too. The more you know about how you’re different to other providers, the more you’ll be able to improve on your comparative weaknesses and the more eloquent you’ll be when questioned by your potential client.

When you get to the part of your meeting where you’ll explain how your product or service meets their needs be sure to use McCarty’s 4Mat model. Explain why your approach is best for them, what your solutions looks like, how you will implement the solution and how it works and finish with a chance for them to questions you. I explain this thoroughly in my book How to Present.

5. Language. Never flinch when discussing your costs and don’t call them costs. Use a word like ‘investment’ which softens the sales process for everyone.

6. Rapport. We like people who are like ourselves – sadly it’s true! The best way to build rapport or ‘sameness’ with your client is to ask questions that help you get to know your client and show how interested you are. Don’t ever fake your personality, just bring out that part of you that matches with a part of them to create easier relationships.

7. Ask. Always, always, always ask for the sale. It’s true that most people recoil from the hard sell and in turn that can make us feel uncomfortable about asking for the business. Remember your client is not a mind reader, and just because you are clear in your mind about what you want them to do, doesn’t mean that your client is similarly focused. Be explicit about what you want without pushing too hard and make sure your client knows that you are excited about the possibility to work with them. TEN QUESTIONS EVERY ENTREPRENEUR NEEDS TO ASK

BY ANDREW GRIFFITHS Getting it right in business is not that simple. How on earth do we know if we are on track or not? Many business owners simply muddle their way through, hoping that they are doing more things right than wrong.

And of course hoping that there are a few bucks left in the bank account at the end of the day. It is a strategy that I used for almost 20 years, but it was very stressful and a lot harder than it needed to be.

But I think there is a better way. By asking a few simple but very specific questions, once a week, we can spend a few minutes! making sure we are on track and heading in the right direction.

So here are 10 questions that I ask myself every week: 1. Am I staying true to my big picture goal?!

Most entrepreneurs share one common characteristic – they are opportunity junkies.

This means they are continually distracted by the newest opportunity or idea that happens to flutter by. Sure, the very nature of being an entrepreneur means that we look for opportunities, but if you are not careful you can spend all of your time chasing new opportunities and not realising any of the ones under your nose. We need to know what our big picture is and then make sure we are staying on track to achieve it.

2. Is my business better this week, in some way, than it was last week?

Now this might seem like a big challenge, and it is, but it really just means that we are committed to constant and never-ending improvement. It might be better organised, it might mean a new coat of paint, it might be a new marketing campaign, securing that new client, a website update or a new product or service. Or perhaps that list of incompletes that have been driving you crazy are now all completed.

3. Am I on top of the money I am owed?

A surprising number of profitable businesses go broke simply because they don’t have any cash.

We all need to keep track of the money we are owed and most importantly, we need to get really good at ensuring any money owed comes in. One of the best ways to monitor this is to watch the average length of your receivables.

Put simply, this means how long it takes you to get your money in. If this is starting to take longer (and it has around Australia in the past three years) you could be headed for trouble.

TEN QUESTIONS EVERY ENTREPRENEUR NEEDS TO ASK 4. What am I doing to get new customers right now? !

Successful businesses never stop looking for new customers. When times are good they business develop, when times are tough they business develop even more. They understand that the marketing you do today generates the business you need tomorrow. Every business needs to be committed to business development every week, and ideally every day.

5. Am I charging enough?

From my experience many businesses simply don’t charge enough. This is generally due to their beliefs around self worth. One way to benchmark your charge out rates is by how

many jobs you win. If you get every job you quote on, you are too cheap. If you get less than a third, you are probably too expensive. I like to sit somewhere in the middle, around the sixty percent mark, I know then that my charges are about right.

6. Am I getting word of mouth referrals?

If you are not getting referrals there could be a problem. Clearly you need to make sure you are asking people how they heard about your business. Ideally most people will say someone referred them to you. If you aren’t getting referrals, there is a problem and you need to get to the bottom of it. Another tip here, don’t expect to get referrals if you don’t refer others yourself. So become a great referrer wherever you can.

TEN QUESTIONS EVERY ENTREPRENEUR NEEDS TO ASK 7. Do I really know what is going on in my industry?

We all need to stay abreast of what is happening within our industry. I spend at least one hour a day researching online to see what people are doing in the entrepreneurial space. It is the best hour of my day and it has huge returns.

8. Am I investing in myself and my business?

I am a big advocate of the need to invest in yourself and your business to be truly successful. Investment takes many shapes, including time, money and energy. A business that lacks investment soon shows the signs of wear and tear, as does the business owner who fails to invest in himself or herself. Remember, this is a marathon not a sprint. We are in it for the long run.

9. Am I contributing to the community where I make my living?

do the right thing and tell no one. The reality is that customers want to know that they are dealing with a good business and the only way they will know is if you tell them.

10. Am I balancing my life and my business?

There’s no two ways about it, being a workaholic may bring short-term success, but it is not sustainable or enjoyable. We need to have a very clear life outside of our business, one where we do the things we really enjoy doing and that recharge our batteries.

I have certainly struggled with this over the years and I know most small business owners do, often because we don’t look at work as, well, work. But we really need to take time out to recharge, to let the brain process whatever needs to be processed and to have some fun.

Our best thoughts will come when we are feeling refreshed and full of beans, not when we are exhausted and burnt out.

TELL THE TRUTH!

BY LORNA PATTEN There is great power in telling the truth. No matter what’s going on, when we tell the truth to ourselves and others we feel better, we are more engaged with people, we make better decisions and life becomes easier, less stressful and more joyful.

You can change anything when you tell the truth about it - anything at all. Yet we live in a world where pretending and lying and withholding! and secrecy is accepted as normal, where many people are afraid to be open, honest and truthful and where many believe that what we keep from others!rather than what we share is what makes life work - well it doesn’t. Avoiding the truth only increases our fear and helps create feelings of isolation.

The power of telling the truth lies in the simple fact that everyone knows what their truth actually is, even when it’s not overtly communicated. And each of us knows when we are not being completely open and honest with others. The ENERGY that we expend withholding is a false economy, an illusion – because everybody knows what’s really going on and we all know they know we know they know … The great cosmic joke!

So, what actually stops you from being totally truthful/honest with everyone, about everything, all the time? Why do you withhold, omit information, embellish, exaggerate, fudge a little, or just plain lie? FEAR Fear of the EMOTIONAL consequences, fear of how the other will react – fear of how they will feel and then how you will feel and then fear about what each will do as a result of saying what’s really going on.!

Here’s the good news: it’s ok to feel scared and you can still tell the truth!

In fact the first truth to tell is whatever you are feeling in that moment about telling the truth! If you are feeling scared/anxious/nervous, say so. www.michellebowden.com.au

When you acknowledge your fear, it shifts and when you tell your WHOLE truth, there is definite shift in your energy. If this does not occur – you have not yet told ALL of your truth, so keep going! The energy shift, release, relief … will occur once the whole truth is acknowledged.

TOP TIPS FOR REHEARSING YOUR PRESENTATIONS

BY MICHELLE BOWDEN It’s literally frightening what people can say when they speak without first rehearsing.

Take a look at some of my favourite ‘Bushisms’: “I remember meeting a mother of a child who was abducted by the North Koreans right here in the Oval Office” “We’re concerned about Aids inside our White House – make no mistake about it” So many people say they are not as good at public speaking as they should be.

When I quiz them I often find that they throw together their presentation at the last minute and rarely rehearse. Exceptional presenters rehearse. And they rehearse and rehearse and rehearse. “But,” said a participant in one of my programs last month, “Seinfeld doesn’t rehearse, he does those jokes off the cuff.”

Really? Are you sure? Most comedians I know put an extraordinary amount of effort into their comedy and they rehearse the same skit or line over and over so that their voice, body language, and facial expressions are congruent and make it as funny as possible. They rehearse so that they achieve their objective. As presenters we should do the same.

Here are some tips so that you rehearse as productively as possible.

1. Get up and do it! Stand up and deliver the presentation out loud as if it’s the real thing.

2. Don’t rote learn it. Use different words every time you rehearse. Don’t try to memorise every www.michellebowden.com.au

single word – just be sure to get the ‘gist’ of it each time.

3. Beginnings and endings. Spend more time on the opening and close as this is where you’ll embed your key messages for an audience. The opening is also where you feel most nervous so if you’ve rehearsed this part a lot you’ll get off to a nice strong start. You know your content (the body of the presentation) and the body or middle is also where you have slides typically to help you, so the opening and close is where you should focus your rehearsal. One of the Executives I work with rehearses as she walks between meetings in the city. She’s admitted that people stare at her but she says she doesn’t care if it helps her nail that million dollar pitch!

4. Do it in different places. Rehearse your presentation in as many places as possible so that you’ve done it in so many different places that by the time you get to the meeting room or conference venue it’s just another location.

TOP TIPS FOR REHEARSING YOUR PRESENTATIONS (CONT.) 5. Do it in front of people. Many of my clients collect a group of key stakeholders from different teams to be their audience. For example, someone from each of the following: sales, customer service, marketing, human resources, accounts, technical. Each person will give feedback from their area of expertise which makes for some very helpful solutions for improvement.

6. Rehearse the questions. Brainstorm all the questions you think you’ll have to answer and be sure to plan and rehearse the answer in advance. Ask your audience to ask you your planned questions as well as any other questions they can think of when you rehearse in front of them.

7. Do it to time. The cardinal sin of public speakers is going over time. It’s self indulgent and makes life hard for the next presenter. As a general rule you should almost double the time it takes to practice. That means if your presentation takes 10 minutes to rehearse it will generally end up going for about 20 minutes with questions and the usual interaction that occurs in a presentation (unless you are experienced at rehearsing ‘real time’). So rehearse your presentation with this tip in mind and don’t go over your allotted time frame.

You’ll see the things you should keep doing and the things you should change or stop. And by the way, consider taping the actual presentation if it’s possible so you can congratulate yourself on your achievements!

9. If all else fails record yourself and play it into your ears while you sleep. This may sound awful! And to be honest I wouldn’t do it – but then I’m a very diligent ‘rehearser!’ A friend of mine who is a professional speaker simply can’t make herself rehearse – she says it’s too boring and she can’t make herself focus. So instead she records herself and listens to it while she sleeps and this is what helps her remember her content. It’s not for everyone – but may work for you.

Rehearsing is critical! Exceptional presenters rehearse. Good luck rehearsing your next presentation.

THE NOT-TO-DO LIST!

BY MICHELE TOCCI Author Michael LeBoeuf provides the following suggestions for your “not-to-do list”.... ! All low priority items, unless you have successfully completed all your high priority items ! Anything you could delegate to someone else ! Demands on your time from others that are either thoughtless or inappropriate ! Any errand that, if ignored will have minimal consequences ! Anything you might have done for someone else that the person should be doing for himself or herself.

Doing less is the key to success. Having less clutter saves you time. Taking on fewer tasks means you can focus and complete projects.

This means making room for tasks that are the best use of your time. Being over committed means you’re not functioning the best you can.

So look at what you can eliminate by asking yourself the following questions: ! ! ! !

What can I cross off my list?

What can I leave until later?

What can I out-source?

What can I delegate?

Tim Ferriss author of the 4 hour work week strongly recommends a “not-to-do list” as he believes what you don’t do determines what you can do. Some of his suggestions include: ! ! ! ! ! !

Don’t answer calls from unrecognised phone numbers Don’t email first thing in the morning or last thing at night Don’t agree to meetings or calls with no clear agenda or end time Don’t let people ramble Don’t check email constantly Don’t over communicate with low profit high maintenance customers www.michellebowden.com.au

Don’t carry your phone 24/7 We need to place items on our ‘not-to-do’ list that do not contribute value in any way. By intentionally making a list of items [rules] that you are not going to do it will enable you to focus and be more productive. !

The key idea regarding prioritising is answering these questions: ! What gives you most enjoyment? ! If you had more time what would you do? ! What are some of the items on your ‘100 things I would love to do list’ It’s up to you to establish boundaries around what’s important to you by developing your own set of rules [not-to-do list]. It’s your life, you are in charge and you have to take responsibility to make the really important things happen. Then you can prioritise and allow the wonderful and good to be an ongoing part of your life and you are well on the way to creating a better life.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH US?

BY MICHELLE BOWDEN There’s this problem in the workplace and maybe you can relate to it?

According to an HC Online article, 98% of HR leaders find themselves with the regular and arduous task of handling conflict at work. Conflict is increasing turnover, sick leave and absenteeism not to mention legal costs. Plus it causes a decrease in productivity and job satisfaction.

A 2012 survey by Employee Development Systems (EDS) found that 81% of HR professionals have experienced an employee resigning as a result of conflict, and 77% have seen it result in increased absenteeism.

After canvassing the experiences of more than 350 HR professionals, the survey concluded that common root causes of workplace conflict included: • • • • •

Warring egos and personality clashes (86%) Poor leadership (73%) Lack of honesty (67%) Stress (64%) Clashing values (59%)

The same EDS survey quoted here found that when conflict is handled effectively, it can actually become a catalyst for positive changes in organisations. The survey found that among organisations in which HR has effectively resolved conflict, 57% have seen better ongoing problem solving, 31% increased motivation, 77% more tolerance of others, and 40% an increase in overall team performance.

From my perspective the problem is obvious.!

The more time you spend in first position (in your own shoes), the more ego centric and selfish you become. The more selfish you become the less you care about other people’s needs and the more you just do what you do because you don’t think (or care) about the consequences.!

And most of us live in first position 24/7 – even if we think we are the nicest, most fabulous, caring individual that ever walked the earth. Yes, sorry, it’s true!
