PRESENTING TRAP - SELLING FROM THE STAGE

BY MICHELLE BOWDEN Your client has asked you to present to their people and in many cases they are paying you a fee to do so. So be sure to check in advance if you are allowed to sell from the stage. Most corporations won’t agree to any sales from the stage and will recoil from it if you do it.

There are subtle ways to make a pitch and then there are outright blatant extended pitches.

People do not like to feel as if they have been lured into a room for you to give them a sales pitch.

If you intend to pitch, do it with subtlety and only after you have given them some very valuable and helpful information for free. Be very tasteful and ensure any pitching you do is kept to a minimum.

One way I reduce the need to sell from the stage is to pre-sell my books to the client in advance (before I even get to the event). I encourage the client to buy a copy of my book for everyone as

a conference gift. Then I can make a fuss of the client for buying everyone a copy of the book and the whole audience claps them! Now my client feels appreciated, the audience is excited and I am delighted that they have the necessary tools to actually use what I have been speaking about during the presentation. Win, win, win!

If you are presenting at someone else’s conference, check with the conference organiser that it would be OK to pitch your business before you do. Otherwise you might find that you don’t get invited back to present again. Remember that sometimes the best pitch you can give is the quality of the presentation.

If you put your name and your organisation on one of your final slides… and you have given the presentation of your life… people will follow through by ringing you. I have been surprised that clients can ring you as much as 2 years after the presentation!

What kind of presenting do you do at work?

I regularly present to our business development team, management team, the Board and to my wife! It seems like I never stop!

What prompted you to attend Michelle's Influential Presentation Skills program?

Our Managing Director did some Executive Presentation Skills Coaching with Michelle early on in her career and spoke very, very highly of it.

How did Michelle's program change your attitude to presenting in business?

Hugely. I have to work harder now! I'm pretty comfortable talking to people and to be honest, usually I would back myself to do a presentation with not much preparation. Especially if I know my subject matter! But I found that sometimes, maybe every 4th or 5th presentation, I just missed the mark. I wasn't happy with the feeling in the room after the presentation.

Michelle's course presented a clear structure and plan (being an actuary, I DO like plans!) of attack and since applying her steps, it really does feel as if I hit the mark more often.

I hear ‘yes’ more from my boss! Do you know if she reads this magazine? I don't want her to know that I have figured her out! Seriously, she clearly shapes her thinking along the lines of Michelle's course. As do most people, and that's why Michelle’s teaching is so powerful! Shaping your own thinking along these lines, whether you motivate staff, talk to advisors, present on big tenders or briefing the Board, helps immensely in influencing people and achieving the outcomes you are looking for.

In what specific ways have your presentation skills improved since completing Michelle's training?

What became obvious to me after attending Michelle’s training is that if you continue to

present using your own preferences and style then you’ll keep building rapport with the people like yourself, but they were the presentations I was already doing well. I’ve now learnt how to adapt my style to suit my different audiences (within the boundaries of my natural personality).

Plus, I'm actually better at keeping to my allotted time. I also changed around the structure of my presentations, ensuring that it contains the necessary hooks and so that it flows more naturally. All round, I would say that my presentations (and skills) have definitely improved.

What were your top three take aways from Michelle's program?

TO LOGO OR NOT TO LOGO?

BY LEE FEATHERBY At PowerfulPoints we are passionate about making a presentation a reflection of our client’s brand, but that doesn't mean putting a logo on every slide.

Our belief is that no-one else should be able to put their logo on your presentation without it looking weird or just wrong. Many marketing departments concerned about "brand" think that a template is necessary for branding....er, no. Do you wear the same outfit to every occasion? Would you use the same advertisement to every market? The answer to both is no, and I challenge marketing departments to truly think about their brand or what it means in a presentation context: what role a template?

The more external facing and important the presentation, the more you should NOT use the template and create a bespoke presentation. It just makes sense. You may use Publisher to create an internal flyer but a design house for advertising material. Why are presentations different? Why do organisations have professionally designed brochures yet amateurishly designed presentations?

Like you, a brand has different moods and different occasions. However, a brands interaction must be consistent with the promise and previous experience, it’s not about always looking the same. Apple's logo is consistent (but has evolved over time) and there are variations in their products, and the interaction with them provides an experience that is distinctly Apple.

I often get asked about the issue of copyright and printing slides as a justification for putting a logo on every slide. This is nonsensical, it takes someone of only moderate experience about 2 minutes to remove the logo off any document. It provides no protection at all: copyright exists at the act of creation of a slide, www.michellebowden.com.au

not by putting a © or logo on it. You are not going to stop people ripping off your material by using a logo. If you really want to protect your slides, make the slide so damned well branded it can’t be used by anyone else.

If a marketing department is so brand conscious, what do they do about the presenters themselves? Isn't the speaker more a reflection of a company than the slides? If he is dull, ineffective, untidy or just a really bad presenter isn’t he doing more damage to the brand than not having the logo on every slide?

Are the brand police onto this? Do they authorise who can represent the company? No, of course not: the reality is that the need for a logo on every slide to protect the “brand” doesn’t pass even the least bit of scrutiny.

It time to really focus on what about the presentation screams "BRAND!" while delivering its message. If that means not having the logo on EVERY slide, who cares! The ability to do that is what makes a great presentation designer as opposed to someone who creates slides.

Oh, and as a footnote to this, Steve Jobs didn’t have the Apple logo on every slide in his now famous product launches. Food for thought.

AVOID MIXED MESSAGES

BY MICHELLE BOWDEN We can’t hear, listen and process two different conversations at once. When we try to, it causes cognitive overload.

Have you ever been at a cocktail party where you are part of a bigger group in conversation?

Suddenly you hear your own name mentioned in a nearby conversation and your attention is diverted to the conversation where your name

was mentioned to the exclusion of the first conversation. In fact, you can’t hear the first conversation at all. This is called the Cocktail Party Phenomenon and it’s really worth remembering this when you communicate in business and only ask for one thing at a time.

Let the other party hear the first request and act on it before you ask for anything else.

PERSONALITY AND INFLUENCE

Each one of us has a personality made up of a huge variety of different personality filters. Every experience, situation or conversation is taken through these filters, which give us remarkable insight into why we do what we do. They explain why we continue to behave as we do when we know our patterns of behaviour limit us or make us unhappy. They explain why it is that some people are able to outclass others at certain tasks; why it is that you like the people you like and dislike the people you dislike; why your family, friends and mother-in-law drive you crazy at times! (By the way, my mother-in-law is great!)

When we work out our own filters, it enables us to have self-respect and self-confidence. This enhanced self-acceptance empowers us to make necessary changes to the way we approach people and tasks. It gives us a greater ability to create strategies for dealing with difficult or frustrating people and situations, and allows us to communicate with others more effectively. This means you can be happier and more persuasive with improved relationships.

You will become more tolerant of others, get more of what you want in life and build instant rapport with everyone.

PERSONALITY AND INFLUENCE (CONTINUED) Let me give you some examples. If your employee is not checking in with the team for updates it could be they are an individual player – that is, they prefer to operate on their own.

If you have someone who is constantly asking for help, guidance and advice they may have an external frame of reference – they need external feedback to know if it’s the right decision or action to take. You need to give them that feedback to support them until you find ways of helping them develop a way of working out problems for themselves.

If you are a particularly nervous presenter, even after learning all the tips and tools used by exceptional presenters, then you probably have a perfection sort – a need to be perfect.

Understanding this allows you to manage your expectations of yourself when presenting.

If you go on holidays and enjoy the people you meet more than the scenery or the activities you engage in then you may have a people preference.

These filters put labels on our differences and help us to understand why people act the way they do. From there, provided we are open to being flexible in our approach and style, we can make a plan to improve our relationships and outcomes.

If they had an internal frame of reference then you would ask them, ‘What do you think?’ rather than telling them what they should do.

Alternatively, if they had an external frame of reference you might give them lots of client testimonials, explain what other people are doing and saying about your organisation or service, and advise them what and how to buy from you.

Here is another example: imagine you’re a manager with an employee who has a sort by others preference (meaning they put others ahead of themselves) and they have a preference to match what is being said (meaning they agree and add value to your opinion, rather than mismatch it or find holes in your argument).

The ideal role for this person might be in customer service where the ‘customer is always right’. If they have the opposite preferences, then please don’t put them on the customer service desk!

These are just some examples and of course there’s a lot more to it. Personality filters are a simple way of categorising our various preferences, and people always love learning about themselves.

That’s why I have developed a keynote speech called ‘Why is everyone around you so dysfunctional?’ – it’s a hoot!

For example, if you are a business development manager with a client who has a team preference then you would tell them all about what’s happening in your organisation and invite them to internal events so they feel part of your team.

If they had an activity preference (enjoy activities rather than people or places) then you might entertain them at a golf day.

MANAGING CHANGE IN 5 EASY STEPS

BY HANNAH SAMUEL Change is inevitable. It’s something we can guarantee. Of course that doesn’t make it any easier, especially when change is forced upon us, or when we feel the change is unwarranted or inappropriate. Managing the pre-change process effectively is essential if you want customers to welcome and support the change rather than challenge it. If there’s any inkling that the change might disadvantage the customer, or be handled in a way the customer considers to be inappropriate, then not only will you find your reputation severely dented, you might also lose the goodwill and customer loyalty you’d previously earned and find yourself watching part of your customer base disappear.

So what should a provider do to help minimise the risk of alienating clients as you go about making the changes needed?

1.

Test first. Before you announce the change, test possible responses. Be honest in your dealings with them and make sure the outcome isn’t a foregone conclusion to change. Testing the water before you commit is an essential part of the process.

2.

Invite feedback and involvement. The majority may not want to share their views, but those that do will be hugely offended if you fail to give them an opportunity to do so.

3.

Give plenty of warning. The greater the amount of time someone has to consider the change the more likely they are to accept it logically and willingly. Giving little or no notice will only irritate customers who may feel they’ve been hijacked or hood-winked. Given time they may still choose to walk away, but at least they’ll have time to do their research, www.michellebowden.com.au

consider their options and be less likely to speak negatively about you.

4.

Communicate widely and repeatedly.

Use as many channels as possible to let customers know about the proposed c h a n g e s . D o n ’t j u s t s a y i t o n c e , communicate it repeatedly over several months if need be, to ensure the greatest likelihood of the message getting through.

5.

Be willing to revert back or change course. Go back to the drawing board and reassess the pros and cons of making the change if you come up against strong resistance. Forcing change through without customer support may result in short-term gains but will almost always cost you in the long run.

Consumers are more willing than ever to voice their opinion online. Make it easy for them to make positive comments rather than negative ones by getting their buy-in from the outset, otherwise you risk losing more than your reputation. www.hannahsamuel.com

As an individual you have the power to choose.

If you set a goal of health and fitness which means you exercise every day, that needs to become a priority, you have the power to choose what you do. When the alarm goes off of a morning, you have a choice – you can stay in that nice warm bed and grab another hour of sleep or you can get up and exercise and be on the path to achieving your goals. It’s always your choice.

We have a basic desire to improve our lives.

Thousands of years ago, Aristotle said, “You are what you repeatedly do.” So are you going to keep repeating what you are doing and not change or move forward, or are you going to take some time and identify ways that you can improve your life?

Want To Give Up? Sometimes in business it becomes really tough.

You question whether you should be persisting.

These are stories of succeeding against the odds, persisting in the face of doubt, true grit, focus and determination of never quitting until the goal is reached.

YOU MAKE IT ALL UP!

BY LORNA PATTEN As the insanity in the external world continues to reveal itself to be based in fear-fuelled behaviours and outcomes - stop and take a moment to contemplate the awesome power of accepting that you make it all up!

Really ... you make it all up.

Everything that you experience externally starts internally with how you think and feel and then act.

When you change the way you think and feel and act, the world changes. Accepting, nay embracing, this simple yet stunningly potent truth is all it takes for you to remember that you are the force of transformation in your world.

Yet I suspect you hesitate to accept. You are still reluctant to really get that you are that powerful, that magnificent and that able. Able to create the reality you choose from the whole of who you are, pure love.

Well no time like the present to choose again and right now ... and I mean now, accept without question that you are the source of all that is.

You don't have to feel it or even believe it, you just need to accept it as a truth to live by then BE who you want to BE while you do what you do.
