nnual growth is expected to continue to rise upwards of three per cent over the next five years in warehousing and storage around the world, which only raises the question,

how can decreasing physical operations still mean growth for your company? Simply put, with disposable income at its highest in years, the demand for products to be shipped around the world has led to increased storage and a huge revenue stream for freight forwarders.

a greater understanding of the need for added value and service than I had previously. During that time the growth of technology within the forwarding environment expanded rapidly and many forwarders that didn’t embrace these technical developments got left behind. Many faulted when the financial crisis occurred years later. Forwarders that could remain lean in terms of resources but flexible in terms of service provision were able to grow their business and ride the wave of financial crisis.

Q A

How have you seen the warehousing and storage sector develop over the last few years? Both warehousing and forwarding seem to continue in a cycle driven by customer demand. Greater visibility, flexibility and competitiveness are a key aspect of those demands, therefore our industry must deliver continuous improvement and embrace technology to meet with customer needs.

How did you end up in the forwarding industry? My original career path was focused on joining the Metropolitan Police. How has technology impacted the way you work within freight forwarding? Technology has been one of the biggest changes and continues to be a main driver of forwarding development. Clients now expect online access, with greater EDI connectivity between their systems and their service providers, combined with the demand for real-time traceability will continue to drive forwarders to develop such technology.

Q A

Have you had to deal with more complex freight types in the warehousing sector over the last few years? The basics of warehousing and forwarding remains the same, although clients do like to complicate processes in their drive to reduce costs. We continue to build our business on the principal of keeping it simple.

Q A

What advice can you offer a company looking for the best warehousing and storage facilities for the requirements? Our industry has a wide spectrum of capabilities, therefore it is best that the client understands what their true needs are, as opposed to their wishes, to find the best solution to their requirements. Once these objectives have been established then companies such as Imorex are able to provide the correct solutions for that client.

This automatically analyzes each product’s dimensions, volume, and weight and then determines the optimal carton size to pack order lines. Carrier compliant shipping labels are printed at the time of order allocation and pickers simply put products in the labelled shipping carton pre-determined by the cartonization algorithm.

SEGREGATE SINGLE-LINE ORDERS

Single-line orders can generally be picked in large batches because they don’t need to be consolidated with other items, eliminating the packing and sorting function altogether.

MULTI-ORDER BATCH PICKING

Batch picking – the practice of picking multiple orders at one time – can be accomplished in a non-automated environment at a relatively low cost with pick trolleys. Rather than filling one order at a time, the picker will pick the products required for multiple orders in one pass through the warehouse.

PICK AND PASS

Pick and Pass is an order picking methodology where pickers are assigned to specific zones within the warehouse. Cartons move between areas as the picks from the previous area are completed. Pick and Pass is most effective in warehouses with a large number of products and a high volume of orders.

SLOTTING FIXED PICK AREAS

In slotted fixed picking, products are dedicated to one or more locations. Typically, each pick location is configured with minimum and maximum quantities for replenishment. When orders are allocated in the WMS, the system will attempt to allocate the inventory from the fixed pick locations and, if necessary, create a replenishment order to refill the pick location. When deciding what products to slot, consider using the 80/20 rule: dedicate slots for the 20 percent of your products that make up 80 percent of your order volume.

Back in July, the Government’s aviation strategy consultation document pointed out that in 2015, goods worth around £160 billion were shipped by air between the UK and non-EU countries. Air was the only mode where exports were greater than imports. This represented over 40% of the UK’s extra-EU trade by value and shows the importance of aviation to our global trade. At FTA we have consistently argued that capacity constraint at Heathrow is hampering British trade, and with Brexit looming it is even more important that this issue is progressed.

Currently the Heathrow process is stuck in parliamentary purgatory waiting for debating time, so that MPs can vote on the government’s proposals. The parliamentary timing is unclear, particularly given the Brexit regulatory issues at the moment, but we believe the vote will take place around the summer of 2018. The politics of Heathrow expansion are difficult, to say the least, with several senior figures in the Conservatives and Labour firmly opposed, despite support from their parties. FTA will engage with the parliamentary debate again next year, where we will continue patiently making the case that with Brexit looming and trade in focus it is time now to set politics aside and finally approve this crucial piece of national infrastructure. ur nation’s capital is the central hub for storage and warehousing. Heathrow is of interest when it comes to looking at how the UK organizes and distributes

cargo. The high volume of cargo being stored and shipped here is no surprise, but how does this effect other factors when it comes to the UKs storage and warehousing needs?

The UK in general experienced its strongest warehouse take up for several years recently. Around 2.4 million sq. ft. of floorspace was let in the second half of the year, twice as much as previous years, and a very good indicator that the industry isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Order patterns, order volumes, speed of delivery and narrowing margins have meant that London has had to utilise capacity in the warehousing industry and focus on clever logistics to get a freeflowing service that all stakeholders can appreciate. Heathrow has already demonstrated how to implement these deliverables and become a functionally viable option on a global scale.

oland is the largest of the newer European Union (EU) member states. It has been one of the fastest developing countries in the EU in recent years. In 2014 its Gross Domestic Product

(GDP) increased by 3.3%, well above the EU average. Poland is located at the crossroads of European trade and transport routes. It can be an entry point to other Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries as well as emerging markets further east. Challenges to doing business in Poland Doing business in Poland is very similar to doing business in the UK. If your product or service is successful in the UK, there is a good chance you will be successful in Poland.

•• Strategic location •• 105.8bn Euro of EU funds will be allocated to Poland 2014–2020

However, there are challenges. These include...

•• Investment incentives in Special Economic Zones (SEZ), business and technology parks

•• Lack of clarity and transparency in tax administration

•• Availability of foreign lawyers, accountants and consultants in Poland to help foreign investors
