Sometimes you just need to get out of town, and that's exactly what keyboardist and group leader Gap Mangione did when it came time to record and release Live In Toronto, his latest collection of songs. The 2015 Rochester Music Hall of Fame inductee decided to journey north of the border to record live at the Old Mill Toronto, and Gap invited some close friends to join him: Andy Weinzler and Pat LaBarbera (saxophones) Neil Swainson (bass) and Steve Curry (drums). Out of the nine pieces, more than half were composed by Gap’s brother Chuck, while two more are originals by the group leader himself. Throughout the evening, Gap’s keyboard work was brisk, and consistently in the pocket. The other players were also on top of their game, and collectively created intriguing, organic and energized works of art. While the personality of Chuck and his light, airy style was evident, it’s fascinating to hear how someone else, his brother in this case, presented the pieces. The group fused together a tight, solid session. Gap is frisky and often upbeat on many of the songs while the dual saxophone package of Weinzler and LaBarbera can ignite a fire when they need to burn, yet knowingly simmer when a more subtle approach is intuitively needed. Ultimately, this live session captured exactly as it was played, without "fixes" as proudly pointed out in the liner notes, combines the freshness of today with the demanding standards set by the elite jazz greats from over a half century ago. Alberta Cross (Dine Alone Records) S we d i s h born, Brooklyn-based Petter Ericson Stakee is the only constant member of the group Alberta Cross, and although their

www.FREETIME.com •

latest CD is simply self-titled, the group has been recording and releasing CDs for several years. Early releases showcased a group that was collectively more pumped and revved up. Things start a bit more modestly this time around with the short, pensive “You’ll Be Fine.” But the following song, “Ghost of Santa Fe,” is a dramatic, full-on aural assault that starts to burn while “Western State” is equally grand in both sound and style. One of the discs high water marks, “Easy Street,” starts equally strong and then dramatically drains into deep introspection, demonstrating that the group's unique storytelling is creatively intact. As the disc approaches the final third, a few songs fail to provide a consistent spark, meandering a bit too much, but the group’s often casual, acoustic-driven approach ultimately holds your attention. Alberta Cross's “Americana meets folk" sounds remain attractively atmospheric, pensive and probing. Stephane Wrembel Dreamers of Dreams (Water is Life Records) Although his first recordings began to appear in the early 2000s, high water marks were achieved in 2008 and 2010 when the songs of French-born gypsy guitarist Stephane Wrembel appeared in two of Woody Allen’s Europebased movies. Many of Allen’s previous movie soundtracks reached all the way back to the 1920s and 30s for original jazz recordings to color his films with authentic stylings, so Wrembel, with his original compositions, was in good company. Dreamers of Dreams, released in 2014, shows his continuing passion for gypsy jazz while blending it with world music, straight up jazz and other organic sounds. By both praising, and honoring Django Reinhardt, Wrembel continues to dance between the fine line of what’s old and what’s new. He’s like a whirlpool of energy, drawing in various ethnic influences, including the piercing sounds of Reinhardt, the speed of Al DiMeola from the states and earthy fret work by the likes of Eliades Ochoa from Cuba. Wrembel’s nimble and precise approach to the guitar continuously reveals new waves of creativity with each and every piece.

SHE DOESN’T HAVE ALZHEIMER’S. BUT IT’S CRUSHING HER. Being a caregiver is one of the toughest roles on the planet and many caregivers will reach their breaking point without ever asking for help. The good news is, you can provide hope. If you know a caregiver, find out how you can help them get a break when it’s needed most: today.
