beer CRAFT

Celebrate Local at The Harvest Brew Fest by Mark Tichenor

It’s pretty a m a z i n g , h ow craf t beer has evolved over the past couple of decades, both as an industry and as a part of our consciousness. It used to be a novelty, or curious delicacy in the more hoity-toity pubs. Nowadays, independently brewed beer is ubiquitous. A whole generation has grown up never knowing the dark times when American beer was, well, let’s just be charitable and say ‘one-dimensional.’ Today, there are more breweries in the USA than at any other point in the nation’s history, with more opening every day. Beer festivals, too, have evolved. Once a way of introducing people to the concept of craft brewing, the new focus is on highlighting local and regional specialties that coexist with the breweries that distribute on a national scale. The Harvest Brew Fest, coming to Henrietta’s Dome Arena on November 14, aims to do exactly that. It’s a showcase of American brewing on the national, state, and local level. The breweries everyone loves, Troegs and Dogfish Head, will participate, but a great deal of the focus is on what’s coming out of New York State. As it turns out, what’s coming out of New York is a ton of delicious beer. The heavy hitters, like Brewery Ommegang, Empire, and Saranac, will be present of course. But the great thing is the sheer amount of breweries from the Rochester region. Only nowadays is it possible for a full-scale beer festival to take place with primarily local producers. Altogether, look for Ten breweries from within an hour’s drive of Rochester to participate in this festival.

OUR 1000th ISSUE! •

My pick: Abandon Brewing Company from Penn Yan. Located in an old barn overlooking Keuka Lake, Abandon occupies one of the most picturesque vistas in the Finger Lakes. Their beer skews toward Belgian styles, and the operation is small enough in scale that brewer Jeff Hildebrant can afford to get experimental when he wants to. Look for some pure deliciousness issuing to issue forth from their taps. There’s more to Western New York than just beer. After all, this is one of the premier applegrowing regions in the nation, and Rochester is at the epicenter of a craft cider supernova. The Harvest Brew Festival is featuring some of the region’s top cider producers, as well as several upstart cideries just ramping up. 5 cider producers will participate. Did Imention it’s gluten-free? This festival promises to be one of the largest in the area, and the precedent it sets for focusing on local is an admirable one. It makes a statement that, though mostly small, Rochester area breweries are not to be overlooked; it is another testament to Rochester and The Finger Lakes as an increasingly important brewing region, and a haven for lovers of fine craft beverage. Mark owns a laptop and likes beer. For more on beer, check out the beercraft blog, updated regularly, at beercraft. wordpress.com. Find him on Twitter @beercraft.
