Care Personal Assistants Adult social care personal assistants can now apply for approval by Oxfordshire County Council's Support with Confidence scheme, which trains and vets individuals wanting to work with adults requiring social care support, at no cost to the applicant. A register of approved personal assistants will become available to those seeking to hire one early next year. The scheme is the first of its kind in the country and was modelled on the County Council Trading Standards department's Buy with Confidence initiative, a list of checked and approved businesses for residents. Fire Fighters Raise Money for Children in Need Fire fighters and families from Oxfordshire County Council's Fire and Rescue Service raised £3,782 in Thame on Friday when they collected money for 15 hours outside Oxfordshire stations and other public places. 10 per cent of the funds raised will be donated to the Fire Fighters’Charity. Scouts Christmas Card Collection Thame Scouts will again be helping the elderly and disabled this Christmas by offering a Christmas card collection service. Boxes will be placed around town at the Thame Gazette office, the Chocolate Box and the library. Cards should be posted by 4 December. Mates n’ Dates The Guideposts Trust needs volunteers for “Mates n’ Dates”, a specialist dating and friendship service for adults with learning disabilities in Oxfordshire. Second-Class Content - Online or off, a prospect wants to know "What's in it for me?" Answer that question as quickly and as often as possible on most of your key pages. Also many small business sites feature text that is useless and boring, and it drives visitors away in droves. Get professional help to write engaging text. 5. Faulty Navigation - If a visitor lands on your site and has trouble navigating,

Good navigation on your website is a must if you want visitors to stick around long enough to be converted into customers. 6. Graphic Overload - Many web developers just can't resist the temptation to create "cool" animation and graphics which in tests have been shown to have a negative effect on the user experience. Try to avoid using Flash splash pages. Very few people will wait to watch the Flash intro splash presentation and a few won't even wait for it to load. 7. No Tools To Overcome Scepticism It's not easy to make a sale to average consumers. They've been taught to be highly sceptical of anyone selling anything. On the Internet, that scepticism turns into downright cynicism. To help you "win them over," you should: • Provide contact information on every page • Include an "About Us" page. • Include a photo of yourself (especially if you're a service provider) • Include testimonials from customers •Include endorsements from industry experts • Provide a solid, "we take all the risk, you get all the reward" guarantee and offer a privacy policy. 8. Distracting Pop-Ups, Banners, Using links, banners, and pop-ups for affiliate programs and other profit streams can distract a visitor and keep them from your main goal - buying a product from you. 9. Slow-Loading Site - Your visitor will give your site no more than 10 seconds (sometimes less) to appear. If it doesn't, they're gone and so is your opportunity to turn them into a satisfied customer. 10. No Metrics - You can't manage what you don't measure. Testing and measuring give you the information you need to make refinements that will improve your website's effectiveness. Some of the things you should measure are: • Conversion rate - how many visitors become paying customers? • Visitor value - how much does a visitor spend? • Opt-in signup rate - how many people are giving you contact info? • Traffic stats - what is the number of visitors? • Source of visitors - what traffic

Dr. Greenfingers Garden & Country file Week ending 4th December 2009 The very dry months of September and October have now been followed by an extremely wet November. High winds and ferocious rain in Cumbria has lead to devastation in Cockermouth and the surrounding areas. The rivers Cocker and Derwent flow from the Lake District and meet in Cockermouth, and after so much rainfall the huge amount of water overwhelmed the river banks, spillng eight feet deep into the town, flooding homes, shops and offices. This pretty Georgian town now has many months of clearing—up and repair work ahead of it. Wordsworth House, the birthplace of William Wordsworth, was amongst many buidings badly damaged, but the National Trust hopes that the gardens will be restored to their former Georgian design and may even be better than ever. Whilst these dreadful floods were happening we were at the other side of the world in Ecuador. Because of its varied geography crops of all types can be grown, with four harvests possible in each year. Many varieties of potatoes and corn can be grown in the Andes, and bananas and a multitude of fruits can be grown in the tropical coastal regions. Every Indian market we visited had vast, colourful displays of fruit, vegetables, grain and livestock in abundance. Now, on the lst December, we have awoken to the first hard frost of the season. When the weather is milder gently fork around plants in the border to stop the soil becoming too compacted and sour and put down some mulch to preserve the moisture around the base of shrubs and hedges. lf you wish, on a fine day, you can still move crowded perennials to a new spot in the garden although it isn’t a good time to split plants. Wait for the milder weather of spring. Protect less hardy plants with a few inches of light soil or compost. Autumn—planted bedding plants such as polyanthus, forget-me~nots and wallflowers should be checked to make sure they are still firmly bedded into the ground. ‘ This weekend and the days following are the time to be thinking about getting a Christmas tree if you want a fresh one and haven’t already bought one. Whichever kind you buy, whether pot~grown, dug up and planted into a pot, or with the roots removed, try and keep it out of doors for as long as possible before bringing it into the warmth. lf you buy one with roots, give it a good drink of water when you get it home and make sure the soil is kept moist. lf the tree has no roots, cut off the bottom two inches of the trunk and put it into a bucket of water for a few hours before taking it indoors to decorate. lf you treat it like any other cut flower and give it some water each day, it shouldn’t drop all of its needles before the big day. lf you buy a container—grown tree, plant it into the ground after Christmas, and if you keep it watered and fed throughout the summer you will hopefully have a tree to enjoy in the years to come.

No artificial arrangements can compete with the fresh look and smell of the real thing. lf collecting pieces of evergreen from the garden, dunk it into water for a few hours to remove any dust and to give it the chance to take up plenty of water. This will help the arrangement to last much longer, especially if it will have no water supply. When cutting the greenery think of it as a pruning session and keep the bush or tree’s shape in mind. Arrange into well soaked Oassis, using cocktail sticks taped round the bottoms of candles to make them more secure before pressing them into the foam. Front door arrangements can be made with wet Oassis wrapped in polythene or wire netting to make it firm if you haven’t got a ring of foam or greenery. The local florist is the place to go for the wire, tape and Oassis you will need. Begin by using lots of greenery stuck into the Oassis and then add the flowers or wired fruits, nuts and bows to add some colour. For Christmas presents, look out for gifts in the garden centre and nursery. They now sell products from all around the world if you want to find something Domestic £5 million different. On the traditional side, a fresh and liability plant or a Garden Token makes a present Commercial insurance which will give lasting gardening pleasure for years to come. A seed catalogue and a packet of seeds would make a nice present for a child to give to a parent or Fully qualified grandparent and it won’t break the bank.
