Merriment Begins, It’s Fair Week! SHOPPING Indoor - Outdoor

“T

he 2nd Greatest Show on Earth” took to the streets of downtown Fairfield, Texas as the annual parade kicked of the 2016 Freestone County Fair and Rodeo.

Best Dressed Cowboy and Cowgirl road their horses, waving at the crowds lined on either side of Commerce Street.

Two-year-old Bralee Lott is named this year’s Best Dressed Cowgirl. She is the daughter of Soncharae and Allen Lott of Fairfield.

Best Dressed Cowboy for 2016 is two-year-old Kyler Ridge, son of Kristie and Cole Ridge of Oakwood.

Earning Most Creative for their float entry is Incommons Bank.

Driving off with Most Entertaining float is Sam’s Restaurant / Bush’s Chicken.

Most Beautiful entry (at right) in this year’s parade is the Miss Freestone County Fair float.

The coveted “Spirit of Freestone” trophy goes to Cowboy Heritage Church.

This award is given to the local organization or business that best represents or interprets the theme.

For pictures of the other parade winners, turn to page 1-B in this week’s edition.

Following the parade, the littlest cowboys and cowgirls competed in the Stick Horse Barrel Racing and Stick Bull Riding contests at the Ike Carden Pavilion at the fairgrounds (pick up a copy of next week’s edition for pictures of this event).

The Miss Teen and Miss Freestone County Fair Pageant is being held Tuesday, June 14th as the Freestone County Times is being delivered to newsstands.

Crowning is being held at Fairfield High School Auditorium beginning at 7:00 p.m. Admission cost is $10 for adults and $5 for kids.

Judging is complete for the annual Home & Garden show.

Woman Arrested Following Road Rage Stop

reestone County Sheriff’s office, with assistance from Fairfield PD, responded to a road rage complaint on Sunday evening, June 12, 2016, around 5:00 p.m.

The stop ended with the male driver being released, and the female passenger arrested for having a small

amount of marijuana in her possession.

There were no firearms located during this stop, explained Sheriff Don Anderson.

The stop took place in the McDonalds parking lot of Fairfield.

FHD Board Approves New Name A

t the June 8, 2016 meeting of the Fairfield Hospital District Board, held at ETMCFairfield, members approved the new name for the medical complex currently under the management of ETMC. Beginning January 1, 2017, the hospital will no longer be under the ownership of ETMC; and board members are working diligently to make the transition as smooth as possible.

After going through input offered by staff and community members; the board unanimously approved to name the campus “Freestone Medical Center.”

Chewbacca Mom Spends Time with Cancer Patient Area cancer patient, 4-year-old, Lexie Neptune, met her favorite person… The Chewbacca Mom! “It was a surprise for her, and she just lit up when she saw her,” explains Lexie’s mom, Sarah Neptune, about the special visit from Chewbacca Mom, Candace Payne, on Monday, June 6, 2016, at Children’s Hospital in Dallas.

“I was viewing funny videos online with Lexie when I came across the Chewbacca Mom video; and Lexie started laughing so hard. She just loved it. Kept asking to watch it over and over,” says Sarah. “Then one day she told me, ‘Momma, I want to meet my lady,’ so I set out to locate her by posting a request on Facebook.”

“I never expected it to happen so fast,” she continues.

“Within 16 hours, I was speaking to Candace’s manager to set an appointment for a visit.”

While at the hospital for testing, Candace showed up for a 30-minute visit. She brought a Chewbacca mask, one just like hers, to give to Lexie, as well as other child goodies.

In addition, she also gave the family two gift cards; $500 to Kohl’s Department Store, and $300 for Hasbro products.

“So many people talk so bad about Candace online. Saying she did the video just to get famous and to get all this free stuff,” says Sarah. “But she didn’t ask for the fame. It was all dumped on her unexpectedly. And yes, she is getting a lot of free things, but she doesn’t keep those things. She is using her fame for good, spreading the word of God. I can’t say enough good things about this amazing woman!”

“During our time with her, we were the only ones on her radar,” Sarah explains. “Several people asked for autographs and pictures, but she politely told them, not right now, this time is for Lexie.”

“Lexie will never forget her special day with the Chewbacca Mom, and we can’t thank Candace enough for taking time to spend with Lexie. This is something she will never forget.”

About Lexie’s Cancer At the age of three, Lexie began to change. According to Sarah, Lexie became lethargic, stopped playing, having horrible headaches, and stopped eating and using the restroom.

“She just wasn’t right,” Sarah says. “My baby wasn’t herself.”

At this point, Sarah and husband, Aaron, were taking Lexie to the emergency room on pretty much a daily basis. “They ran test after test after test, and everything came back negative,” she explains.

“When your child tells you she wants to go to the doctor, you know something is seriously wrong,” says Sarah. “This time Aaron took her and demanded a CAT Scan. They tried to tell him they wouldn’t do the scan because she was so young, but he stood firm and told them he wasn’t leaving until it was done.”

When the results came back, they told Aaron that there was a tumor on the brain; and began the process of having her transported to Children’s Hospital in Dallas.

After talking to several different neurological teams and more tests, Lexie was diagnosed with Craniopharyngioma, a form of brain cancer. In addition to the tumor, there is also a cyst which feeds off of the tumor. This cyst continually grows, producing cerebral fluid. As the cyst grows, it puts pressure on the brain, causing severe headaches; and could potentially alter vision; among many other things.

They also learned that because of the way the tumor was growing, it would not be wise to remove it, because it could potentially cause additional medical issues.

Lexie underwent surgery to install a shunt in order to drain fluid from the cyst.

After the surgery and other treatments, Lexie was doing very well and the family moved to Wyoming for a job opportunity for Aaron.

While there, Lexie relapsed. She was having bad headaches again, and even started having seizures.

Following testing in Utah, it was found that there were new tumors growing. The medical team there was not comfortable treating Lexie, and suggested they return to Dallas for treatment since the neuroteam was already familiar with her case.

Upon returning to Texas, Lexie has undergone even more testing. Last week, the family found out that the shunt had moved due to the new tumors fighting for space.

Doctors believe that she may have yet another type of cancer, Glioma. Teams are currently strategizing a treatment plan.

“It’s been tough, but we are just giving it to God,” says Sarah.

“We know he is in control.”

Lexie has three siblings, 10-year-old Adam, 6-year-old Aden, and 18-month-old Anah.

Kelsie Lummus and Jordan Maggard Join Their Families

Engagement Announced

Randy and Nichole Lummus of Teague are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Kelsie Lummus, to Jordan Maggard, son of Guy and Tiffany Maggard of Teague.

Kelsie graduated from Teague High School in 2014. She is currently working at Small Town Tees in Mexia. Kelsie will start the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program in July at Navarro College. She plans to graduate in May of 2018.

Jordan graduated from Teague High School in 2013.

He attended Navarro College in 2013 and received a certificate in the oil and gas program. Jordan works for Kent Phillips as a pumper.

The wedding is planned for October 1, 2016 in Streetman, Texas.

Sheriff’s Report

By Sheriff Don Anderson Don Anderson Deputy was dispatched to an alarm call on Spur 114. The buildings were found to be secure.

Teague Medic 3 transported a 50 year old female with diabetes that had passed out to the E.R. in Mexia.

Deputy was sent to a residence on Hwy 84 to speak with a wife who wanted to know if she could have her husband evicted.

Fairfield Medic 8 transported a 33 year old mother to the E.R. that was having severe back pains after falling at the swimming pool.

Deputy was sent to Hwy 84 near CR 611 to assist a subject with several Longhorn cattle that had gotten out of the pasture.

Deputy and Troopers located and stopped a vehicle that was carrying a woman that relatives were concerned about. All were found to be okay.

Deputy was dispatched to CR 1171 on a loud music complaint.

Deputy booked one into jail for public intoxication.

Deputy was dispatched to a civil stand-by on Main Street while one party moved out.

Fairfield Medic 8 transported a 35 year old offender from the Boyd Unit to the E.R. that was having chest pains.

Deputy was sent to the west service road of IH-45 near FM 833 to check on a report

of kids on bicycles near the flooded water.

Don Anderson Deputy was dispatched to the E.R. on a report of a 9 year old that had been shot in the chest accidentally with a BB gun.

Deputy, Trooper, Teague VFD and Teague Medic 2 responded to a report of a vehicle that hydroplaned in high water on Hwy 84 W. Deputy booked two subjects into jail for possession of Marijuana, (less than two ounces).

Deputy was sent to Hwy 84 W. on a child custody dispute.

Precinct #1 Commissioner Ward was notified of a tree that was across the road on CR 121.

Deputy, Trooper, Fairfield VFD and Fairfield Medic 6 responded to a report of a vehicle that had gone off the roadway on IH-45 near the 203 mile marker.

Deputy booked one into jail on an outstanding warrant that had been issued by the County Court for Theft, ($50$500).

Butler VFD assisted Fairfield Medic 7 on FM 489 E. with a resident that was having difficulty breathing.

Deputy assisted Fairfield P.D. on Hwy 75 N. near the car wash on a caller’s report that a man was chasing a woman down the street.

Trooper, Dew VFD and

Fairfield Medic 6 responded to a report of a vehicle that had run off the roadway on IH-45 near the 193 mile marker.

Deputy and TX DOT responded to a report of high water across FM 1366 and FM 2777.

Fairfield VFD responded to CR 496 on a report of a transformer that was on fire.

Fairfield Medic 7 transported a 52 year old male to the E.R. that was in respiratory distress.

Trooper, Dew VFD and Fairfield Medic 7 responded to a crash reported on IH-45 near the 192 mile marker.

Deputies were sent to a domestic dispute on CR 966.

The parties were separated for the night.

Donie VFD and Teague VFD responded to a fire call on Elm Street.

Fairfield Medic 7 transported an 86 year old male to the E.R. that was would not wake up.

Deputy was dispatched to a welfare check on CR 322.

Deputy was sent to an alarm call on FM 80 S. The area was found to be secure.

Deputy was sent to check on a stranded motorist in the center median of IH-45 near the 191 mile marker.

Deputy was dispatched to a dog complaint on CR 111.

Trooper responded to a report of a vehicle that had rear-ended another vehicle on the interstate near the 186 mile marker.

Teague P.D. booked one into jail for possession of Marijuana, (less than two ounces).

Deputy was sent to check on a caller’s report of a vehicle that had crashed on the interstate near the 180 mile marker.

Dew VFD responded to a

report of a propane leak on CR 661.

Deputy and Navarro County Deputy responded to report of a vehicle with several occupants that were in the ditch on FM 416.

Deputy was dispatched to a domestic dispute on Hwy 75 S. The subjects were arguing about the electricity being shut off.

Teague Medic 3 transported a 70 year old female to the E.R. that was having difficulty breathing.

Deputy and Teague VFD assisted Teague Medic 3 with a male subject that was exhibiting symptoms of a heart attack.

Trooper, Deputy, and Streetman VFD responded to a report of a vehicle that was in the median on IH-45 near the 212 mile marker.

Deputy was sent to Hwy 84 E. on a report of flooding that was occurring over the roadway.

Troopers and Deputy responded to a report of traffic that was backed up to Navarro County on IH-45 due to flooding around the 207 mile post.

Deputy and Trooper responded to a report of an 18 wheeler that had jack knifed on the Interstate causing further traffic congestion along with the flooding that was occurring.

TX DOT was notified of flooding on Hwy 84 east of Fairfield and west of Teague.

TX DOT, Commissioner’s, Deputies, Troopers, P.D.’s, VFD’s, First Responders tied up around the County with flooded roadways and motorist that were stuck in areas of high water across the roadways from the early morning rains.

Jail Population - 72

Four Arrested on Drug Charges in Wortham Wortham Police Department arrested three male and one female subjects on Friday, June 3, 2016 following a traffic stop turned investigation, according to the Wortham PD Facebook Page.

According to the post, Officers Willis and Lang, with Sgt. Craig, conducted the traffic stop in front of apartment #46 of a complex located at 219 North 2nd Street, part of the Wortham Housing Authority.

The stop led to an investigation inside the apartment where drugs and paraphernalia were found and the subsequent arrests.

Charges issued include two misdemeanors for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana in an amount less than 2 ounces, three felony charges of possession of a controlled substance under 1 gram, tampering/fabricating evidence, and endangering a child.

One of the suspects was arrested for a felony warrant out of Navarro County.

The child involved was a 6-month-old who was turned over to Child Protective Services.

According to Wortham PD Chief, Kelly Butler, names cannot be released at this time because it is an ongoing investigation.

Texas Drilling Permits and Completions Statistics for May 2016 The Railroad Commission of Texas (Commission) issued a total of 606 original drilling permits in May 2016 compared to 916 in May 2015. The May total included 488 permits to drill new oil or gas wells, 13 to re-enter plugged well bores and 105 for re-completions of existing well bores.

The breakdown of well types for those permits issued May 2016 included 179 oil, 28 gas, 354 oil or gas, 17 injection, zero service and 28 other permits.

In May 2016, Commission staff processed 760 oil, 199 gas, 60 injection and 11 other completions compared to 1,299 oil, 201 gas, 72 injection and seven other completions in May 2015. Total well completions for 2016 year to date are 5,529 down from 9,832 recorded during the same period in 2015.

According to Baker Hughes Inc., the Texas rig count as of June 3 was 176, representing about 43 percent of all active rigs in the United States.

USDA Extends Deadline for Recording Farm Structure Gives Non-Family Farming Operations More Time to Restructure in Response to New Rules A one-time, 30-day extension to the June 1 deadline for recording farm organization structures related to Actively Engaged in Farming determinations has been announced by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack recently. This date is used to determine the level of interest an individual holds in a legal entity for the applicable program year. Farming operations will now have until July 1 to complete their restructuring or finalize any operational change. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued the extension in response to farmers and ranchers who requested more time to comply, and to assure that everyone has enough time to provide their information under the new rules.

“Most farming and ranching organizations have been able to comply with the actively engaged rule,” said Vilsack. “This one-time extension should give producers who may still need to update their farm structure information the additional time to do so.”

The 2014 Farm Bill provided the Secretary with the direction and authority to amend the Actively Engaged in Farming rules related to management. The final rule established limits on the number of individuals who can qualify as actively engaged using

only management. Only one payment limit for management is allowed under the rule, with the ability to request up to two additional qualifying managers operations for large and complex operations.

The rule does not apply to farming operations comprised entirely of family members. The rule also does not change the existing regulations related to contributions of land, capital, equipment or labor, or the existing regulations related to landowners with a risk in the crop or to spouses. Producers that planted fall crops have until the 2017 crop year to comply with the new rules. The payment limit associated with Farm Service Agency farm payments is generally limited annually to $125,000 per individual or entity.

TAHC Adopts Fever Tick Vaccine The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) held a regularly scheduled Commission meeting on May 24, 2016, at its headquarters in Austin.

The following rule adoption will become effective on June 15, 2016.

--Chapter 41, Fever Ticks, Fever Tick Vaccine This newly adopted rule will add the fever tick vaccine requirements for beef cattle in quarantine areas and clarifies the different requirements for dipping, treatment, and vaccination.

Non-veterinarians may only collect postmortem CWD samples. As such, the commission proposes to change the title of such individuals from “Certified CWD Sample Collector” to “Certified CWD Postmortem Sample Collector.” The proposed rule also includes the requirements for Certified CWD Veterinarians.

The TAHC began accepting public comments for the proposal on June 10, 2016. The deadline for comment submissions on the proposed amendment is July 11, 2016. TxDot to Replace Small Creek Bridge North of Teague, Texas Beginning June 27, 2016, the Small Creek Bridge on CR 930 will be closed to all traffic. This will begin a four month $490,735.18 project to replace the existing bridge.

The contractor for this project is Knife River Corporation out of Bryan, Texas.

CR 930 is located north of Teague, Texas.

During this construction, the west side of CR 930 can be accessed from FM 1367 using CR 939 and from FM 80. The east side of CR 930 can be accessed from US 84 using

CR 941 and from FM 27 also using CR 941.

Construction of this new bridge will be managed by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

Funding for this project is provided by the Federal Highway Bridge Program and Freestone County.

TxDOT and their contractor appreciate everyone’s patience during this project.

Family Caregiver Education Offered

Changing of the Guard for FISD Board “Thank you so much for serving this board with so much class and integrity,” says FISD School Board President, Blake Robinson, as he presents a special recognition plaque to outgoing board member LaCharles Bass at the June 9, 2016 meeting.

In addition to the plaque, Mr. Bass was also awarded the famous retiree rocking chair to honor his service to Fairfield School District.

Following the presentation, Mr. Bass packed up his things and bid farewell, making room for the newly elected board member, Greg Gibson.

Next, Mr. Gibson, along with returning board members, Tracie Ezell and Kim Whitaker, were sworn in by taking their oath of office.

Once the new board was established, members voted to reorganize.

“It’s been a pleasure to serve as President, and I appreciate your trust in me,” says Mr. Robinson. “But it is time for new leadership here. On that note, I would like to nominate Tracie as the new President.”

This nomination was unanimously approved, as were all other nominations.

New officers are: Tracie Ezell – President, Eric Chavers – Vice President, and Kim Whitaker – Secretary. Other board

Official Texas Historical Marker Unveiled for W.L. Moody Reunion Grounds

History of Veteran Campgrounds Celebrated grounds were to serve as a Memorial to veterans of all U.S. wars.

In 1951, the site was used for the Fairfield Centennial Celebration, as well as the Freestone County Boys Club and Livestock Show. Families continued to use the camp grounds for gathering during the County Homecoming, Fair and Rodeo Week.

During the dedication, Lisa Tate read the poem “Freestone’s Honored Dead,” written in 1897 by Mrs. Emma George.

The Marker was officially unveiled by Clois Mullen and Tom Anderson, Campsite Association members.

Before reading the inscription, Brad Pullin, Chairman of the Freestone County Historical Commission, recognized those who had worked toward securing the Historical Marker: Paula Snider, Loretta Anderson, Julee Emmons and “Marker guru” Linda Mullen.

Pullin also spoke of a picture he treasured of his great-great grandfather, George T. Bradley, sitting at the Watson campsite with Pullin’s grandmother, Josephine, in his lap.

Confederate re-enactors performed a gun salute during the event.

They included Hammond and Jeremy Sessions of the 12th TX INF Re-enactors Group and Marc Robinson of the John H. Reagan SCV Camp 2156.

The re-enactors flew a replica flag of the 12th TX Calvary, Co. B from Freestone County.

Marc Robinson’s greatgreat-great-grandfather, D.P. Bennett, was a member of this unit, as well as a founder of the UCV Camp 87 that met on the Reunion Grounds.

Closing remarks were given

by Frank Huckaby Parker, a Confederate Veteran Descendant of a Freestone County Confederate Veteran, Frank descendant.

Beneath the shade of a majestic Oak tree, some of Freestone County’s original families gathered on Saturday, June 11, 2016 to dedicate an official Texas Historical Marker for the W.L. Moody Confederate Reunion Grounds.

Opening with prayer and the raising of the American and Texas flags, history was brought to life for those attending.

Ralph Billings spoke of the beginnings, as a three-day encampment for families of

local confederate veterans.

These events, held from 18911933, included speeches, concerts, baseball games and dances.

The campgrounds were named after Col. William Lewis Moody, who organized the Company G of the 7th Texas Infantry, based in Freestone County, Texas.

Years later, in 1947, the Moody family designated the grounds as the W.L. Moody Camp, Memorial Park, and placed it under the supervision of the City of Fairfield. The

The Historical Marker for the W.L. Moody Confederate Reunion Grounds was completely funded by private donations from the W.L. Moody Memorial Park Campsite Association.

The dedication ceremony was presented by the Texas Historical Commission, Freestone County Historical Commission, and W.L. Moody Memorial Park Campsite Association.

Leslie Freeman, President of the Campsite Association, served as emcee. Invocation was brought by Willie Ward, raising of the flags conducted by the Fairfield Boy Scout Troop #668, and National Anthem sung by Jessica Jones.

Prior to each show, kids ages 3 years and older, 50 lbs or less, will compete in Mutton Bustin’ beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Nightly entertainment will be offered under the pavilion.

Tuesday and Wednesday nights, June 14 and 15 will feature Rockin’ Rick Guitars Gone Wild.

include Out of the Blue on Thursday, June 16th; Choice Country on Friday, June 17th; and Theresa Farris, DJ on Saturday, June 18th.

C.E. (Gene) Neal, Jr.

C. E. (GENE) Neal, Jr., 90, passed away Thursday, June 2nd, 2016. He was born in Brevard, North Carolina, to C.E. (Colonel) Neal Sr. and Amy Doris White. He married the love of his life, Mary Helen Smith on January 1, 1949 and they shared 66 years together, until her death one day shy of a year ago on June 3rd, 2015.

Mr. Neal graduated Valedictorian, from Calvert High School. He served in the U.S. Army as Infantry Company Commander, 12th Philippine Scout Division and Luzon, Philippines. Upon his return he attended college.

He was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and received his BBA from the University of Houston. He enjoyed poetry, writing, public speaking and lay preaching.

He loved the Methodist Church and was a dedicated Rotarian.

He moved his young family from Houston to Fairfield in the mid-sixties in search of a better, quieter life. He ran a Real Estate business for over 50 years in Fairfield, and retired only because of the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Mr. Neal is survived by his children; C.E. (Trip) Neal, III and wife Cindy, Steven A. Neal and wife Kay, Susan Jones and husband Andy, Mary Jean Alford and husband John Allen; grandchildren, Jason Trip Neal and wife Kim, Erin Neal, Caitlin Neal, Beth Fuellbier and husband Bill, Christopher Neal, Tamara Rittershaus and husband Andre, Bryan Jones and wife Jennifer, Amanda Jones, Jake Alford, Hunter Alford; great grandchildren, Justin, Warren and Sophia Neal, Brent, Ryan, and Tori Waller, Brandy, Alan and Christal Neal, Evelyn Rittershaus, Aaron and Cayden Jones. He is also survived by one sister Doris Ingram and husband Bob, and one sister in law, Gloria Neal along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Visitation will be 6-8 pm Saturday, June 4, 2016 at Griffin Roughton Funeral Home, Fairfield.

Funeral Service will be 3 pm Sunday, June 5, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church of Fairfield. Burial will follow at Lake Chapel Cemetery.

Mrs. Parker was born September 14, 1942 in Freestone County to parents Leonard C. and Reba Alford Long. She was a lifetime area resident and former owner of Texas Star Café and Parker Oil. She was a member of First United Methodist Church

Ardie Lee Houston.

She grew up in Mexia, graduated with the Dunbar High School Class of 1954, was first a member of New Home Missionary Baptist Church in Mexia, and was an active member of Beluah Missionary Baptist Church, Wortham.

She and Wade Thomas, Sr. were married, and Faye has served as President and VicePresident of the E. E. Wheat NAACP Chapter of Freestone County, has been employed in several nursing homes in the Mexia and Wortham areas, and retired from Mexia State School. She was very active in civic and community activities and was instrumental in encouraging voter registration and participation.

Surviving Mrs. Thomas are: Her son: Wade Thomas, Jr. and wife, Mae Ruth; daughters: Linda Sutton, Victoria Butcher, Ollie M. Gibson, Loretta Thomas, Jessie Hurst and husband, Steve;and Misty Christian; Sisters: Rosie Shelton and husband, Louis; Claudine Bluitt and Gloria Johnson; 33 Grandchildren; 57 Great-Grandchildren; 23 Great-Great Grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Mr. Padgett passed away on Thursday, June 9, 2016, at his residence near Marquez.

He was born in San Antonio, but raised near Jewett where he attended school until being orphaned at age fourteen and moved to Colorado where he graduated from Strasburg High School. He returned to Leon County, to Buffalo, in 1981 and later met and married Debbie on April 25, 1988.

They shared over twenty-eight years of marriage together.

Glen was a cowboy all of his working life. He worked for the Buffalo Livestock Auction for thirty-five years and was ranch foreman for HI Ranch which became A. L. Helmcamp Ranch for sixteen years. He

especially loved working cattle in the mountains of New Mexico. Glen enjoyed fishing and watching his kids rope and playing with his grandchildren. He had a huge heart for everyone and was always willing to lend a helping hand to whoever needed it, and he loved all children.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie Padgett of Marquez; two sons, Ralph Solis & wife Keligh of Jewett, and Billy Padgett & wife Stephanie of College Station; one daughter, Krystal Padgett of Marquez; six grandchildren, Megan Woods, Madison Woods, Katlyn Solis, Makaila Woods, Lilly Padgett, and Garrison Padgett; nephew, Jay Welch & wife Michelle and their children, Michael & Mikaila Stamper and Hunter Welch; nephew, Shaun Pruett & wife Melinda and their children, McKenzie & Jada Pruett; two brothers, Roger Padgett of Ohio, and Larce Padgett of Normangee; two sisters, Karen Gibson of Normangee and Lana Pruett of Bryan; niece, Sherry Mae Johnson; nephew, Adam Runnels; numerous other relatives and friends.

--Viewpoints Letters to the Editor do not necessarily reflect the views of the Freestone County Times OPEN LETTER CONCERNING HIGH SPEED RAIL FROM A GRIMES COUNTY LANDOWNER Texas Central Partners have admitted they want to borrow billions of dollars from the government. Why can’t they raise the start up money they need from the marketplace?

The reason they can’t raise the startup funds needed, is because there aren’t enough investors who believe the rail line will be profitable. If enough investors thought it would be profitable, there would be no need for government funds.

The prospective investors understand that there aren’t enough riders willing to spend enough money per ticket to make the rail line profitable.

This is why there is a shortage of investors. So the number of people benefiting from the rail line (riders and investors) is actually quite small and is insufficient for the business to survive without government subsidies. On the other hand, the number of people who have property that the rail line would pass through from downtown Houston to downtown Dallas, numbers in the thousands. Assuming four people per household, this could easily mean 10,000 people will now have a train going through their property.

Add every other landowner within a mile on each side of the track whose property value is diminished as a result of the train’s presence and the number of people negatively affected is probably over 100,000.

How many people should have to suffer, in order to prove this business will not be financially viable? As far as being “fairly compensated”, that won’t happen. As a private entity seeking to make a profit, Texas Central Partners cannot be expected to offer any more than is legally required for their taking of someone’s property.

No matter how noble the enterprise, there is never a justifiable reason to take property from one entity so another entity can try to make a profit. Let’s be clear, Texas Central Partners isn’t involved in this project because of their benevolence. They will try to squeeze every dollar they can from every landowner possible. If Texas Central Partners wants to show their benevolence, let them offer every landowner within 1

mile of the track, 125% of the “entire” property’s market value (not just the 80’ wide track) and give the landowner the option to sell not just the 80’ needed for the track, but his/her entire property. That way the landowner can use the proceeds to start fresh on a new property without having the nuisance and disruption of a train running through his/her property every 30 minutes. If landowners are to be treated fairly, they should end up with a piece of property comparable to what they originally had, before Texas Central Partners showed up on the scene.

There is no guaranty there will be a train station near Roans Prairie. The $1 billion dollar expense to build a station can never be financially justified. Don’t think college students from A&M or Sam Houston State will justify its existence. College students only go home a couple times a semester and how many of their parents live within a few miles of downtown Dallas or downtown Houston? No parent living in Sugarland or Kingwood or The Woodlands or Katy or Tomball is going to want to drive to downtown Houston to pick up their college student.

You have to remember, the train doesn’t go everywhere.

It only goes to downtown Houston and downtown Dallas. If your destination is anywhere more than a few miles from downtown Houston or downtown Dallas, you are not a prospective rider.

When an enterprise can’t compete in the marketplace (meaning demand for their product or service is insufficient to be self supporting), they either seek government regulations that support/mandate their business or government subsidies (i.e. taxpayers footing the bill to make up for their business not being financially viable). Some of the benefits that these companies that can’t make it on their own always promote are “jobs and tax revenue”.

Sure enough, Texas Central Partners has to promote these benefits (jobs and tax revenue) because they want or need government help to survive. Why else would they have 14 lobbyists in Austin and more in Washington DC? Why does a company with no operations, no revenue, no customers and no service to offer, need 14 lobbyists? I’ll

tell you why, because those lobbyists are begging for special treatment and money from us taxpayers.

If this business could be self sufficient, they wouldn’t need 14 lobbyists.

Remember Solyndra, electric cars, solar panels, solar energy and wind energy? All these businesses require government support, subsidies (taxpayer money) and government regulations to survive. They suck the lifeblood out of the economy and the marketplace and are provided advantages by the government over their competition.

I suspect most citizens of Grimes County don’t want a lot more development. If they did, they could move to Dallas or Houston. I believe most citizens of Grimes County like it pretty much as it is.

Between the choices of a new or wider road and a rail line, there is no comparison.

Having a new or wider road through your property not only enhances your property value it, but the landowner gets direct benefit from the road as well. Having a rail line go through your property decimates the property value and provides no benefit, unless you live in downtown Houston or downtown Dallas.

Finally, I suspect those proponents of the rail line would be a little less anxious for it, if it were going through the middle of their property.

I suggest those proponents of the high speed rail offer to swap their property with someone whose property is about to be split in half and cut in value by more than half. Proponents, show your support for the train – swap your property with someone who lives along the rail line’s route.

Dear Editor, Re: House of Representatives’ June 8 vote passing HR 4775, the Ozone Standards of Implementation Act of 2016 Today I am disappointed in my home state. The House of Representatives just voted to weaken the Clean Air Act and put Americans at risk for respiratory illness and early death, in which twothirds of representatives from the grand old state of Texas supported the bill doing so.

This bill is H.R. 4775, the Ozone Standards of Implementation Act of 2016.

Though this may sound like new standards are emerging to fight “ozone” (AKA smog), it does the complete opposite.

In summary, the worst of this bill lets corporations pollute more, doubles the period of review of pollutants to ten years, and makes it easier for common pollution events to be exempt from regulation.

The day before this vote went through; I called my friendly neighborhood congressmen, Joe Barton. I was not allowed to speak with

his environmental staff-person and was instead directed to his Communications Director who, in paraphrase, told me that the EPA has too much control over smog levels, though I was under the impression that that was their job. . .

My family has a growing history of lung cancer. Some of them battle it at this moment. I am worried about my loved ones’ and my own health, including friends from southern California of which many have asthma as a result of heavy smog.

As an environmental science student at the university with the top environmental program in the country, and a decent human being, I completely support the Obama administration in planning to veto this bill and hope that the Senate will make smarter decisions in its upcoming vote.

Victory Bowl!

The Freestone and Central Texas area were well represented in the 8th annual Victory Bowl events in the Waco area. The events were sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and it was a successful event again.

The week stared with the student athletes going to the host homes on Wednesday and beginning practice with the coaches. They combined the practices along with community service projects at different churches and surrounding areas.

The FCA activities culminated in a set of four athletic events, beginning with the inaugural baseball and softball fields on the Belton campus of the University of Mary Hardin Baylor.

The Blue All Stars prevailed in the softball game 11-10 before a nice crowd.

Several area athletes played in the baseball game on Red Murff field at UMHB. Mexia outfielder Avery Williams and Teague outfielder Coby Brooks represented the area well.

The Red team led 1-0 heading in the bottom of the first inning.

Williams reached base on an infield single to the shortstop and was erased on a fielder’s choice. Garrett Barry of Kerens singled up the middle and Trevor Nolan of Corsicana went to third.

He scored on single that Koby Brooks ripped to right field and tied the game at one.

The Red team jumped out to

a lead when they plated four runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Griffin Paxton of West keyed the inning with a run scoring triple to deep right center. They added two more in the sixth.

Blue cut into the lead in the top of the sixth. Nolan reached on an infield single and Brooks responded with his second RBI in the game. He launched a shot to deep right and scored a triple to score Nolan and cut the lead to 6-2.

Williams pitched the seventh inning and gave up three runs on 27 pitches and the final score was a win for the Red All Stars 9-2.

The ladies took to the court at University High School for the third annual volleyball game.

Fairfield’s Kaci Bachtel, daughter of head coach and athletic director John Bachtel, played well for the Blue squad. She had a kill to set the blue team up at 24-18 in game one, which they won. With the series tied at one each, Bachtel served in games three and four. Bailey Meggs of Robinson took control with several kills and the Blue All-Stars took the game 3-1 with scores of 25-18, 19-25, 25-18, 25-18.

Jordan Lansford started and played left tackle for the Red team and played well.

The Red offense could not move the ball in the first quarter and fumbled deep in their own in the field. Jay’lon Bryant of Cameron scooped up the fumble and raced up the near sideline for the only score of the half and led 7-0.

The Red team got on the board in the third quarter when Wyatt Griffith scored on a four yard run to cap a 55 yard drive that lasted eight plays. The try for two was no good but the Red cut into the lead and the score was 7-6 Blue lead.

The Red team made one last effort to win the game. Crawford quarterback Wyatt Griffin tossed a pass that was left up for grabs and Nygree Poole from Killeen Harker Heights caught it and was tackled at the Blue 14 yard line completing a 60 yard play.

After three downs, the Red team lined up for a 31 yard field goal attempt with 24 seconds remaining. Under Victory Bowl rules, the kick was not rushed and Bryson Nail of Mart left the kick wide left and the Blue team preserved a 7-6 win.

This year’s summer reading program is gearing up at local libraries. Here’s how to join: Fairfield Public Library The Summer Reading Program at Fairfield Library started last week.

The program will be held each Thursday at 1:00 p.m. for a total of 8 weeks (June 9-July 28).

Afternoon treats will be served at the end of each day.

Teague Public Library This year’s Kick Off event was on Saturday, June 11 at the Farmers Market in Teague.

The Summer Reading program will be held every Thursday (10:00 a.m. for Pre K thru 1st grade, 2:00 p.m. for 2nd thru 6th grade) starting June 16th and ending July 28.

There will be no Summer Reading program the first week of July.

A Pizza Party will be held on Friday, July 29 to celebrate the conclusion of the summer program. Details to be announce.

The Addams Family: A New Musical Comedy features an original story, and it’s every father’s nightmare. Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family - a man her parents have never met.

And if that weren’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before - keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Welcome to Lennox Valley, my childhood home. In previous weeks, we’ve learned about the good folks who live in “The Valley.” We’ve learned about the churches they attend, some of the people who lead them, and a bit of the drama that they deal with day in and day out.

Previously, we learned that Raymond Cooper, who purchased the town’s only radio station back in 1993, was secretly using his talk-radio popularity to pave a future political career for himself. He set his eyes on the 1998 mayoral race and came up with the perfect platform. For two years, Raymond had prodded his listeners as they became more and more incensed over the Federal Reserve System, which Raymond continuously blamed for the rising price of eggs.

Saturdays from April through September were always busy on Bearden’s Corner. That’s when the Farmers Market came to Lennox Valley and, with no malls or fancy shopping centers to speak of, the Farmers Market was the place to see and be seen.

You could count on the usual vendors each week. There were local farmers selling corn, tomatoes and potatoes from the back of their trucks, housewives who spent their weeks preparing candles and other assorted crafts for the good folks of town, and, almost always, two or three community organizations who set up tables under tents bearing the name of Massengale Funeral Home, located 17 miles to the west in Springfield.

Lennox Valley wasn’t big enough for its own funeral home, so the Massengale family was more than happy for folks to see its name emblazoned on tents bearing displays by the Ruritan Club, the VFW and the Lennox Valley Auburn Hat Society, just to name a few. However, these weren’t getting the usual attention on this Saturday in early May. You see, like many big events, there was some planning and structure that went along with the weekly Farmers Market. Vendors and community organizations submitted requests and were assigned spaces by Vera Pinrod, who not only served as president of the Lennox Valley Auburn Hat Society, but also served as secretary of the Spring County Chamber of Commerce.

There weren’t many avenues to gain power in a small town like Lennox Valley and, as both president of the Auburn Hat Society and secretary of the Chamber, Vera was probably the most powerful woman in town. That was soon to change, but more about that later.

On this particular Saturday, there was more excitement than usual at the market.

It seems there was a new tent lined up at the far end, past all the usual vendors and, as Vera Pinrod skillfully noted, no one had reserved that spot. Even more, the tent didn’t bear the Massengale nameplate. Something was amiss and Vera was about to get to the bottom of the growing commotion.

At first, Vera was chagrined as she saw Marvin Walsh sitting underneath the tent behind a folding table, wearing the denim bib overalls he purchased at a second-hand clothing store in Springfield just two weeks earlier. She was about to tell Marvin to pack up his stuff and come back another Saturday, when she saw the hand-lettered sign taped to the front of Marvin’s table:

Stop the Federal Reserve System Raymond Cooper, owner of the Valley’s only radio station and host of “Renderings with Raymond” every weekday from noon till three, grinned as he saw the would-be confrontation. He held back for a moment, then was pleasantly surprised as he heard Vera tell Marvin, “It’s good to have such fine, civic-minded individuals taking a stand for Lennox Valley.”

And that was that.

A half block east, toward the red light, Elbert Lee Jones was selling eggs out of the back of his truck. Raymond Cooper slyly grinned again as he noted the price of eggs was up a nickle over the previous Saturday.

This was going to be a good week for “Renderings with Raymond.”

Dogan Walk-a-Thon a Big Success The Dogan Alumni Association’s (DAA) second Bi-Annual Education Matters 5K Run & Walkathon held on May 28, 2016 was a huge success thanks to the hard work of the planning committee, participants, alumni, and community. All DAA chapters, including the West Coast Chapter, had representatives present. The day started with warm-up and stretching exercises lead

by Robert Ransom, owner of the Spiritual Insanity Extreme Training Center in Fairfield.

The race kicked off under the direction of Mr. Benny Gabriel, the event day official Judge.

Participants were awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons in following age categories: --Ages 5 – 11: 1st place – Jacorey Daniels; 2nd place – Gavin Turner; 3rd place – Camille Eldridge --Ages 12 – 18: 1st place – Jaylyn Daniels; 2nd place – Myron Hackett; 3rd place – Dakerione Cunningham --Ages 19 and over: 1st place – Charles Love; 2nd place – Donnie Haynes; 3rd place – Willie McElroy VIPs for the day were the 2016 scholarship recipients and scholarship recipients from past years.

The purpose of the Bi-Annual DAA Education Matters 5K Run & Walkathon is to raise money for the organization’s Scholarship Fund which awards multiple scholarships to qualified graduating seniors, descendants of Dogan

Alumni, who have committed to an accredited college.

The walkathon was held on Memorial Day weekend, allowing participants the privilege to walk “In Memory of” or “In Honor of” special persons in their lives by displaying their names on the running bibs. The event was deemed a success, raising in excess of $9,000 toward the organization’s goal of $12,000. Top fund raisers were Delois Jones-Fantroy, Stephanie Cornish-Whitfield, and Gloria Johnson-English, respectively.

Co-chairs, Joan Ransom and Lena Malone-Hatcher, emphasized that “Even though the race is over, supporters may still donate through August 31, 2016”.

Frances Crossno Releases New Book At last! The countdowns are over and school is finally out for the summer!

Parents and teachers alike look to keep children engaged in school in and out of the classroom, especially when they are away from it for so long. Thanks to a new, awardwinning children’s book this challenge becomes a whole lot easier!

The first in a forthcoming series, Cole’s Perfect Puppy,

by Frances Crossno, tells the heartwarming tale of a young boy and the, “love of his life.”

Cole’s life is changed when he meets Scarlet, a rascally golden retriever puppy, after she escapes the pet shop the day before Christmas.

Hopeful to see her under the tree the next morning, Cole is baffled when he finds a pot-bellied piglet from his uncle waiting for him on Christmas Day. Determined to reunite with Scarlet, Cole tries every way he can think to buy the pup on his own.

Though winding and unconventional, the path that Cole takes to his ultimate goal is the epitome of determination and perseverance.

A true Texas girl, Frances Crossno grew up in the, “piney woods,” of East Texas before beginning her undergraduate degree at Stephen F. Austin State University.

She now lives in Plano with her husband and their two, four-legged children, Beautiful Bear and Laddie.

Scout Earns Eagle Rank Zachary Dietrich von Sehrwald (pictured above), with Fairfield Boy Scout Troop 668, celebrated earning the rank of Eagle Scout with scouts, scout leaders, family, friends and the Fairfield Lions Club at the Fairfield Moody Park Community Center, Sunday, June 5th. Zac’s Eagle Court of Honor included a review of the Scout Law as a reminder of his obligations as an Eagle Scout. Becoming and Eagle Scout is a great accomplishment.

Being an Eagle Scout is a great responsibility.

Zac served with Troop 668 for more than five years and earned many of his merit badges attending Trevor Reese Jones, Buffalo Trails Scout Ranch and El Rancho Cima scout camps. Zac also graduated with the 2014 Aquatics class at Worth Ranch.

As an Eagle Scout, one of Zac’s obligations is to continue serving his community. Zac’s preparation to a life of service as an Eagle Scout included earning Citizenship in the Community, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in the World, First Aid, Lifesaving, Personal Management,

Family Life, Personal Fitness, Environmental Science, and Communications merit badges to favorably compliment the total of 23 merit badges he had earned. Zac also served in various capacities with Troop 668’s previous Eagle Scout projects and conservation projects, many hours with the Fairfield Lions Club during the Freestone County Fair as well as the Lions Aluminum can collection, leadership meetings and membership drives and also served with church missions.

To earn the rank of Eagle, Life Scouts must lead the completion of a community service project. Regularly attending Fairfield Lions Club meetings, Zac learned of the club’s critical need to renovate their food booth at Moody Park. Zac presented the Lions Club a proposal to be the beneficiary of his Eagle Service Project by leading the project plan, procuring the materials and supplies as well as leading the volunteer workers including scouts, Lions and residents of the Boyd prison to replace all the rotting wood and with new wood and paint. The project expanded to include

repainting the metal pipe building structure, removing old ceiling fans, replacing the electrical conduits and outlets and installing an exhaust fan.

True to his school, the Class of 2016 and the Band from Eagle Land, with the clubs approval, Zac chose the paint colors of maroon and gold.

Zac’s leadership experience included over 400 hours of volunteers’ time to complete the project in time for the 2015 Freestone County Fair.

At the Court of Honor, the Fairfield Lions Club presented Zac with an engraved handmade sheath knife and a plaque made of a piece of scrap wood from his project with the words “You Nailed It Zac” printed with nails.

Upon receiving his Eagle badge, Zac expressed his sincere appreciation to his first Scout Master, Mr. Keith Turchi (pictured above at right), his former youth pastor, teacher and Family Life Merit Badge counselor Mr. Chris Owens and the Fairfield Lion’s Club for their trust and support.

Sphere Offers Fun, Free Education This Summer at Texas A&M By: Kathleen Phillips

Science on a Sphere on the Texas A&M campus offers 500 new ways to see Earth and other planets, said exhibit organizers.

The interactive demonstration, one of only three traveling SOS exhibits in the world, will be available free to the public now through Aug. 15 at the Texas A&M AgriLife Center, 556 John Kimbrough Boulevard, College Station.

The exhibit projects scientific research from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to simulate weather patterns, ocean currents, airline travel and even Facebook connectivity.

The 6-foot sphere shows high-resolution motion graphics suitable for students, teachers and science lovers. Visitors can experience the exhibit weekdays from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Groups such as classes or summer camps can reserve a time for viewing.

“This interactive exhibit brings science, technology, engineering and math education together in a vivid and captivating way,” said Mark Hussey, vice chancellor and dean for Texas A&M’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. “We are very excited to provide this KICKING OFF another exciting summer reading program at the Teague Public Library are opportunity to the community and to continue librarian Diane Willis (center) and assistant librarians Melissa Satterwhite (left) and Helen fulfilling our land-grant mission of teaching, Marek (right). Science on a Sphere is a giant, spherical display system that uses computers and video projectors to display animated and real-time planetary data. SOS extends NOAA’s educational program goals, which are designed to increase public understanding of the environment.

Developed by NOAA researchers, these globes are now in more than 130 museums and science institutions around the world.

Earth Day Texas offered its traveling SOS system, purchased from NOAA, for use at the AgriLife Center. Earth Day Texas is a Trammell S. Crow sponsored nonprofit organization that hosts the world’s largest public exhibition devoted to environmental stewardship.

Lone Star Ag Credit Awards Scholarships FAIRFIELD, Texas – As Lone Star Ag Credit celebrates 100 years of the Farm Credit System this year, the association continues the tradition of honoring the academic and leadership achievements of rural youth in its 48-county territory. The cooperative recently awarded a $2,500 college scholarship to Cole Beddingfield of Fairfield, Texas.

This fall, Beddingfield will attend Tarleton State University, where he will pursue a degree in ag industries and mechanical engineering technology. He is one of six students who received the 2016 Lone Star

scholarships. In total, Lone Star has awarded $15,000 in scholarships this year to college-bound students.

“Lone Star Ag Credit is proud to help such a deserving student as Cole,” said Kasey McGraw, Lone Star’s Corsicana credit office president. “We wish him the best of luck as he heads off to college, and hope that this scholarship will serve him well.”

Lone Star is part of the Farm Credit System, a nationwide network of cooperatives that supports rural communities and agriculture with reliable, consistent credit and financial services, providing financing for rural real estate,

Flood Data at Your Finger Tips Flood.

A topic that has been fresh on the minds of Texans most of this past year and certainly in recent months. It’s a subject that’s not only affecting rural areas of the state, but one that has also caused terrible loss and devastation in major metropolitan areas. And floods are not centralized to one part of the state. Small towns. Big cities. They can all find themselves in high water.

To help prepare for and mitigate future flood events, in November 2015, Governor Abbott authorized the transfer of $6.8 million from the Disaster Contingency Account to the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) to provide additional technical assistance and outreach for floodplain management and planning and to develop a high-tech network of stream gages.

After receiving the funds, the TWDB immediately began working to put flood information into the hands of Texans. Part of this effort included developing a new website, www.TexasFlood.org, which is another tool for assisting Texans in making sound decisions on what to do before, during, and after a flooding event. Information on assessing your flood risk, flood insurance, making an emergency plan, evacuation tips, the recovery process, and more can be found on the site.

TexasFlood.org also serves as a one-stop shop for statewide stream gage, weather, radar, and precipitation data. The data is

featured on an interactive map, making access to data on rising rivers, streams, and reservoirs more easily accessible to everyone.

The TWDB will continue to add more data to the website in the coming months.

One of the important data points needed to adequately assess flood dangers is the amount of rain falling. To help fill the gaps on rainfall data, the TWDB and partners developed the TexMesonet, a weather station network of high-quality data to support flood monitoring and flood forecasting efforts by the National Weather Service, regional river authorities, and local emergency responders.

We also made enhancements to the Water Data for Texas website by adding flood stage information to the lake level data. This information allows Texans to quickly locate and access lake levels in their region, a critical resource for monitoring rising water.

Local communities often need early warning tools as well as technology and data—and we are pleased to be able to help fund such projects. This spring, the TWDB issued a Request for Applications for communities to apply for up to $2 million in grants for flood early warning systems, the implementation of local strategies for alerting and responding to floods, or flood protection planning. Applications are due to the TWDB by noon on June 17, 2016, and we hope communities take advantage of this important

source of funds!

Another accomplishment at the local level was funding new stream gages in the Wimberley area at locations requested by local authorities and contracting with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), who installed and flood hardened them. In addition, we added five weather stations in the Wimberley area that are reporting data to help track rainfall and soil moisture information.

Aside from these more recent efforts, since 2007 the TWDB has been the state agency to help Texas communities navigate state and federal flood protection grant programs (through our Flood Mitigation Planning Division), implement flood mitigation projects, and meet and maintain eligibility requirements in the National Flood Insurance Program. The TWDB can also provide loans for storm water and non-point source pollution control and flood control.

Combined, these measures are making Texas a safer place. There will always be the risk of flood, but our recent advancements provide more accurate and reliable data to the public, officials, and first responders. Together, we are raising awareness that flood is a subject that should not only be discussed after a tragedy, but also well in advance. It’s a serious subject that the TWDB is committed to advancing in order to better prepare our state for whatever conditions come our way.
