Teague HS Valedictorian “I

t feels very rewarding to receive this honor,” shared Valedictorian Alexandra (Alie) Watson, “I have worked hard to manage classroom time and extracurricular activities; it is exciting to see that pay off.”

Alie will graduate June 5th with an impressive grade point average of 4.774.

Valedictorian is just one of the many notable titles Alie has earned during her time at Teague High School.

She was chosen as Miss THS; Student of the Year; President of the National Honor Society; Female Athlete of the Year; and CoDefensive MVP in District Basketball for 2013-2014.

Also active in UIL, she received the Female UIL Award for 20122013.

Alie was presented with numerous honors during the Senior Awards program Tuesday, May 19th.

Courtney, the daughter of Karen and Ronnie Chasteen, leads her graduating class with a 4.95 GPA. No doubt, her brothers, Bryan Myers and Kyle Chasteen, are proud of their sister.

“This award reminds me that hard work pays off,” she says.

Courtney says she has always believed that education is the key to life’s success.

During her high school career, Courtney played volleyball and basketball for the Wortham Bulldogs and was active in the Beta Club.

She received All-District honors in basketball, being named to the 2nd team.

“I

am very blessed to be able to be Salutatorian,” says Ashley Nicole Anderson.

The Wortham graduating senior earns this honor with a 4.73 GPA. Ashley is the daughter of Christine and Scott Anderson, and has two siblings, Michael and Anna.

During her high school years, Ashley was active in cheerleading, volleyball and track.

Honors she has achieved include the Pin It Forward Leadership Award, All American Cheerleader and 1st Team All-District in Volleyball.

Ashley plans to attend Navarro College to pursue a career as an Occupational Therapy Assistant because she wants to help people.

She counts her teacher, Pam Calame, as an inspiration. “She helped me get prepared for college,” Ashley says.

“I’m glad I’ve pushed myself to work hard throughout my high school career,” says Ashley. Certainly, good advice for next year’s seniors at Wortham High School.

In her spare time, Courtney volunteers at the Freestone County Historical Museum in the county seat of Fairfield, Texas.

She also enjoys watching The Voice, and other TV shows, with her mom.

After graduation, Courtney plans to work toward a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at the University of Mary Hardin Baylor. “I love math and it comes easy to me,” she says.

In her advice to underclassmen, Courtney says that, “Time management skills are important.” ____________________

Honoring Fallen Soldiers

Swift Justice in First Case for Asst. DA A Freestone County jury took only ten minutes to find 31-year-old Patrick Demon Stewart guilty of burglary of a building on Tuesday, May 19, 2015.

In testimony, which began the prior day, May 18, the property owners described how Stewart first tried to open the door to their home in the late night hours of September 20, 2014, whereupon, they confronted him and asked that he leave immediately.

However, later that night, they found Stewart coming out of a building on their premises with items he was in the process of stealing.

The couple detained Stewart at gun point outside the building and called 911.

Responding were Freestone County Sgt. Shaw and Patrol Deputies Gasaway and Martin, who arrested Stewart.

After the guilty verdict, Stewart was sentenced to 24 months in State Jail by the same jury.

District Attorney Chris Martin praised lead prosecutor Assistant DA Cari Heinen for the “excellent” handling of her first felony jury trial.

“I would like to thank the Freestone County Deputies that helped these brave property owners bring this thief to justice.

“My office will continue to seek justice against those among us that choose to steal from other hard working Freestone County residents.

The jury of twelve Freestone County residents sent a strong message to other thieves contemplating committing thefts in Freestone County.

If you do, plan on spending a lot of time in jail,” DA Martin commented.

No Change Social Media: Asset or Liability Teague Aldermen Weigh In Followers of the Teague Police Department’s new Facebook page will have to do without – at least for a little while.

Teague Aldermen voted Monday, May 18th to temporarily suspend the Department’s page while the City’s Attorney drafts an official policy regarding the use of social media.

As discussed during the previous Council meeting, the creation of the page raised concerns about liability, and the need to protect the integrity of ongoing investigations.

The approval of additional lighting will soon have the

City Park glowing brightly.

Aldermen approved the installation of six new street lights that will light the park ground at night.

The Council rejected a request from the Teague Independent School District (TISD), seeking to create a new position within the Police Department for a School Resource Officer (SRO).

Superintendent Dr. Nate Carman presented the proposal and explained that the school district could pay the City $45,000 per year to employ the officer.

Also included would be overtime pay, mileage, and an allowance for equipment

and training.

With the Police Department currently understaffed, Aldermen agreed that designating an SRO would not be possible at this time.

In other business: --Aldermen Ron Rasbeary, Chris Nickleberry, and Marilyn Michaud were sworn in for another term.

--Amendments to the City’s safety policy manual and an ordinance regarding wild animals and junk vehicles were approved.

The Council announced the hiring of new Police Officer, Robert Cross following executive session. ____________________

In County Depository of Funds Commissioners voted to award a two-year depository contract to current depository, Community National Bank & Trust in Fairfield, Texas, during the regular May 20, 2015 Commissioners Court meeting.

Citizens Bank & Trust in Teague, Texas, was the only other bank to return a proposal.

Auditor Donna Lynn Williams and Treasurer Kay Taylor had examined the two offers and found that some savings could be realized by going with Citizens Bank & Trust, but that would create an undue hardship on department heads, whose offices are in Fairfield, if required to make daily trips to Teague.

Additionally, there were bookkeeping issues and the necessity of having to reconcile two bank accounts that were taken into consideration.

However, Williams said she now had some time to resolved

bookkeeping concerns before the two year contract ends.

Taylor pointed out that CDs can be purchased from any bank.

In other action, the Court accepted reports from Senior Services, District Clerk, Auditor and Treasurer.

Bills totaling $219,102.76 were approved for payment.

Educational certificates for Bill Madding and Buck Bonner from Texas Environmental Law Enforcement were accepted.

Commissioner Precinct 3, Bodie Emmons, was granted permission to sell or trade-in surplus equipment: a low boy trailer, dump truck, livestock scale and two motor graders.

During comments, Commissioner Precinct 4, Clyde Ridge reported that the bridge on County Road 930 is still washed out, but should be repaired by the middle of this week for car traffic.

Still Time to Apply for Loan Program Low-Interest Loans Can Help Producers Start or Expand Farms Farmers and ranchers still have time to apply for low interest loans available through the FSA direct farm ownership program, announces U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Texas Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director, Judith A. Canales. Applications must be approved by Sept. 30, 2015 to take advantage of the funding available.

Eligible farmers and ranchers can borrow up to $300,000 to buy farmland, construct or repair buildings, pay closing costs, or promote soil and water conservation.

The interest rate can be as low as 1.5 percent with up to 40 years to repay.

“If you are thinking about purchasing or expanding your farm or ranch, our affordable loans can help,” said Canales.

“There are no backlogs or waiting for funds, so give us a call today.”

New farmers and ranchers, military veterans, and underserved farmers and ranchers also are encouraged to apply. Each year Congress targets 80 percent of available loan funds to beginning and targeted underserved farmers and ranchers.

Targeted underserved groups include American Indians or Alaskan Natives, Asians, Blacks or African Americans, Native Hawaiians, or other Pacific Islanders, Hispanics, and women.

At the Center for Rural Affairs, we’ve heard from farmers across the Midwest and Great Plains about negative impacts of federally subsidized crop insurance for over a decade.

A farm safety net is important to help family farmers mitigate risks, but there are real concerns with the current crop insurance program.

The federal government subsidizes crop insurance, paying 62% of premiums, on average, in 2012. Insurance policies are sold and completely serviced through 19 approved private insurance companies. Not only does the federal government pay the majority of producers’ premiums on every single acre, regardless of how large they are or how much money they make, insurance companies’ losses are also reinsured by USDA. In addition, the federal government reimburses the insurance company’s administrative and

operating costs. In total, these insurance companies have lobbied and negotiated for guaranteed profits approaching a 14 percent return on their investment.

However, the current government subsidized crop insurance program is working against the very farmers we Please calldeserve a safety all believe net. The program is not transparent, props up private insurance company profits, and puts our natural resources at risk. Moreover, unlimited crop insurance subsidies result in mega-farms driving up land costs, driving their smaller neighbors out of business, and barring the next generation of family farmers from even getting a start.

The time has come for crop insurance reforms that emphasize conserving soil and water, put real limits on subsidies to the nation’s largest farms, and ensures these subsidies are transparent to taxpayers.

Sheriff’s Report

By Sheriff Don Anderson Deputy assisted Fairfield P.D. with subjects at Love’s Truck Stop.

Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 Farris responded to the E.R. to issue an emergency detention order for a mental evaluation.

Deputy took a fuel theft report from heavy equipment that was parked near the roadway on CR 1124.

Fairfield Medic 6 transported an 80 year old female to the E.R. that was having a seizure.

Southern Oaks VFD assisted Teague Medic 2 with a resident on Azure Lane.

Deputy met with a complainant on FM 1367 about a theft.

The complainant advised that his ex-girlfriend may have been responsible.

Deputy assisted Wortham P.D., Streetman VFD and Fairfield VFD with traffic control at a crash on IH-45 near the 210 mile marker.

Deputy transported two inmates to the TDCJ Unit in Winnsboro.

Deputy was dispatched to check on a report of a man that was yelling at cars while standing in the middle of the road on CR 941.

Trooper and Wortham P.D. responded to a report of a vehicle that had hydroplaned off the roadway on IH-45 near the 209 mile marker.

Deputy and TX DOT directed traffic away from high water at the railroad underpass on Hwy 84 near Teague.

Fairfield Medic 6 was dispatched to Brookshire Brothers on a caller’s report of a child that was choking on something.

Dew VFD responded to a gas well fire on CR 665.

Deputy took a fuel theft report on FM 833.

Dew VFD assisted Fairfield Medic 6 on CR 411 with a male subject that was having a seizure.

Deputy took a 4-wheeler theft report on CR 140.

Southern Oaks VFD assisted Fairfield Medic 6 on Pine Lane with a male subject that had collapsed and was unconscious.

Deputy was dispatched to an alarm call on FM 27. The area was found to be secure.

Trooper responded to a report of an 18-wheeler that had jack-knifed in the roadway on Hwy 84 E. Deputy was dispatched to the E.R. to transport a subject to the DePaul Psychiatric Center in Waco for a mental evaluation.

Teague P.D. booked one into jail for traffic offenses.

Trooper booked one into jail on an out of county warrant.

Deputy was dispatched to a civil dispute and civil stand-by on CR 930.

Fairfield Medic 6 transported a 58 year old female to the E.R. that had sustained an injury from a fall.

Fairfield VFD responded to a smoke alarm call on S. Mount.

The alarm had been set off by accident.

Trooper responded to a report of a vehicle that had struck a deer on Hwy 84 E. Deputy was sent to put up a horse that was running loose on FM 2777.

Deputy took a cattle theft report on CR 341. The owner reported that someone had cut a fence and had stolen one of his calves.

Fairfield Medic 8 transported a 62 year old male with pneumonia to the E.R. Deputy was dispatched to CR 1221 in reference to a 16 year old that had left the house without the parent’s permission.

Precinct 2 Commissioner Oakes was contacted about a large tree that was across the roadway on CR 901.

Wortham P.D. was dispatched to the Chevron station on a theft report.

Fairfield Medic 8 transported a 79 year old female to the E.R. per a doctor’s order.

Deputy assisted Teague P.D. at the Kilgore Trailer park on a domestic disturbance. One subject was booked into jail on an outstanding warrant for an assault.

Deputy was sent to a dog bite call on CR 1241. The caller reported that they had bitten by a dog while walking on CR 1241.

Deputy was dispatched to CR 536 on a reckless driver report.

Fairfield Medic 6 transported an offender from the Boyd Unit to the E.R. that was unresponsive but breathing.

Precinct 3 Commissioner Emmons was contacted about a sink hole on CR 381 at the Dottie Branch Bridge.

Deputy was dispatched to an alarm call on CR 215. The area was found to be secure.

Deputy, Trooper, Fairfield VFD and Fairfield Medic 6 responded to report of a vehicle that was in the ditch on Hwy 84 near the Cedar Grove Trailer Park.

TX DOT was notified of a tree that had fallen across a lane of travel on Hwy 79 between the Trinity River and Oakwood.

Streetman VFD assisted Fairfield Medic 8 with a 50 year old male that had experienced a possible stroke.

Deputy was dispatched to a welfare concern check of a pedestrian on Hwy 84 W. Deputy booked one into jail on warrants for criminal mischief and aggravated assault.

Deputy was dispatched to a welfare concern on CR 381.

Fairfield Medic 8 was dispatched to a lift assist on CR 1222.

Deputy and Trooper checked on a suspicious person/vehicle behind Shirley’s Truck Stop in Dew. Fairfield Medic 6 transported a nursing home patient to the E.R. that was having difficulty breathing.

Deputy was sent to a civil stand-by on CR 539 while one party moved out of a residence.

Deputy was dispatched to a welfare check on CR 161.

TX DOT was contacted about rising waters on the west IH45 service road near FM 833.

Deputy assisted Trooper near the 206 mile marker of IH-45 with a vehicle that was stuck in the ditch. Trooper booked two into jail on DWI and Public Intoxication charges.

Deputy was dispatched to a loud noise complaint on Knights Circle.

Deputy assisted Teague P.D. on a suspicious activity call on

Webb.

Deputy was dispatched to an alarm call on Spur 114. The buildings were found to be secure.

Wortham VFD responded to a report of tree that had fallen on MLK. Fairfield Medic 8 transported an 80 year old male to the E.R. that was very weak.

Wortham P.D. was dispatched to a report of a female subject that was taking items from a house on S. Avenue B. Teague VFD was dispatched to a lift assist on Walnut Street.

Deputy, Trooper, Streetman VFD and Fairfield Medic 8 responded to a report of two vehicles that had hydroplaned into the center median near the 211 mile marker of IH-45.

Fairfield Medic 6 transported a 69 year old female to the E.R. that was having difficulty breathing.

Precinct 3 Commissioner Emmons was contacted about a tree that across the roadway at the bridge on CR 601.

Precinct 4 Commissioner Ridge was contacted about a tree that was blocking the roadway on CR 950.

Trooper responded to a report of a vehicle that had been rear ended by another vehicle on IH-45 near the Freestone/Leon County Line.

TX DOT was notified of rising water at the Railroad underpass on Hwy 84 W. near Teague.

Trooper and Deputy assisted pedestrians on IH-45 near the 196 mile marker.

Trooper responded to a report of a vehicle that had struck a dog on Hwy 84 W. Fairfield Medic 8 transported a 20 year old to the E.R. that sustained a knee injury from a fall.

Wortham P.D. was dispatched to a prowler call on S. 3rd.

Fairfield Medic 8 transported a 55 year old male to the E.R. that was having difficulty breathing.

Deputy was dispatched to a disturbance in the paring lot at the Huddle House in Dew. The driver of a pickup was yelling at a man in an 18wheeler that almost collided with the pickup driver.

Deputy took a criminal mischief report on CR 8678.

Deputy was dispatched to CR 1220 to issue a criminal trespass notice.

Deputy took a harassment report on CR 192.

Deputy was sent to CR 741 on a report of someone dumping rock on the roadway.

Deputy, Trooper, Fairfield VFD and Fairfield Medic 8 responded to a report of a vehicle that had flipped over near the 203 mile marker of IH-45.

Deputy, Trooper and Fairfield Medic 8 responded to a crash on FM 488.

Fairfield VFD was dispatched to a smoke alarm call on W. Commerce.

Teague P.D. booked one into jail for driving without a license.

Deputy assisted Teague P.D. on a report three subjects in a vehicle that were trespassing.

Three subjects were arrested and brought to jail.

One subject fled from the Deputy after getting out of the patrol car behind the jail. It was later determined that the subject had provided a false identification to the officer’s.

The Sheriff’s Office, Troopers, Teague P.D., Fairfield P.D., Wortham P.D., Park Ranger and Game Warden searched several places late into the night without success. Leon County Authorities were notified that the subjects last known address was in Buffalo.

The other two subjects were booked into jail on charges of criminal trespass, possession of a controlled substance and hindering apprehension. The escapee was identified to be Dennis Ray Sandoval, W/M, 6-4, DOB: 6/1/1986, of 121 Leon Street, Buffalo, Texas.

Continued from 1-A The incident began at approximately 10 p.m., when Deputies and a Trooper responded to a request for assistance from the Teague Police in the 2200 block of Main Street on possible burglary call.

Teague Officers and Deputies located a small pickup, occupied by three subjects, parked in the driveway behind the residence; the subjects did not have the owner’s permission to be on the property.

The trio, driver, Dustin Charles Vaughn, of Buffalo, Texas; a female passenger, Brittny Ann Branson, of Groesbeck, Texas; and a male passenger, identifying himself as a “Mr. Sullivan” were arrested for criminal trespass.

A Sheriff’s Deputy assisted with transport of Sullivan to

the Freestone County Jail.

Upon arrival at the jail, the transporting Deputy had Mr. Sullivan exit the patrol unit.

When the Deputy turned to check the back seat for contraband, Mr. Sullivan fled on foot while still handcuffed behind his back.

Teague P.D. Officers later informed sheriff’s deputies that they had located identification for the subject in the female arrestee’s purse.

The identification revealed that Mr. Sullivan was actually Dennis Ray Sandoval, of 121 Leon Street, Buffalo, Texas.

The Sheriff, Deputies, Troopers, Teague P.D., Fairfield P.D., Wortham P.D., Park Ranger and Game Warden attempted to locate the escapee within the city of Fairfield from Sunday night into the early hours of Monday morning without success, and the search continues.

expressed that Sandoval is wanted on charges for bond forfeiture on the original charge of forgery.

CA Martin also revealed that Sandoval is a registered sex offender.

Leon County Authorities have been notified that the subject’s last known address was in Buffalo, Texas.

Sandoval was wearing dark clothing when he escaped from the Deputy, and his hands were cuffed behind his back. He is a white male, 6’4” tall, weighing 200 lbs. and is 29 years old.

Governor Abbott Adds 24 Counties to Disaster Declaration As severe weather including tornadoes, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and flooding continue across areas of Texas, Governor Greg Abbott today declared a state of disaster in Archer, Bastrop, Caldwell, Cass, Collin, Dewitt, Fannin, Grayson, Harrison, Hays, Henderson, Hidalgo, Hill, Houston, Kendall, Jasper, Johnson, Newton, Nueces, Parker, San Jacinto, Walker, Wichita and Wilson counties, authorizing further mobilization of state resources to assist impacted communities. Additional counties may be added to the declaration as the situation develops.

“The State of Texas has taken brisk action in dispatching all available resources to aid those affected by this severe weather system, and I strongly urge all Texans to exercise every possible precaution to ensure their safety and the safety of their families and neighbors,” said Governor Abbott. “My thoughts and prayers are with all the communities that are suffering as a result of this weather disaster, and I am grateful for the first responders who have worked tirelessly to provide shelter, care and resources to all impacted areas.”

Governor Abbott declared a state of disaster in Bosque, Clay, Denton, Eastland, Gaines, Montague and Van Zandt counties on May 11th, 2015 and added Cooke, Grimes, Hood, Navarro, Smith and Wise counties on May 15th, 2015. The Governor’s declaration follows an elevated activation of the Texas State Operations Center (SOC) to enable rapid deployment of state resources announced on Friday, May 4th.

Current forecasts indicate the continuation of possible severe thunderstorms, large hail, damaging winds, flash flooding, river flooding and tornadoes across the state throughout the week. At this time, any additional rainfall will exacerbate already saturated grounds, which could quickly lead to dangerous flash flooding and extended river flooding. The SOC – in coordination with the Texas Emergency Management Council – remains at an elevated activation level and is continuing to monitor weather conditions and coordinate with the National Weather Service.

Texans are encouraged to follow these safety tips during this weather event: --When severe storms threaten, the safest place to be is indoors.

--Avoid areas already flooded and avoid any fast-flowing water.

--Be extremely cautious of any water on roads or in creeks, streams, storm drains or other areas – never attempt to cross flowing streams or drive across flooded roadways and observe road barricades placed for your protection.

--Remember that dangerous waters can seem deceptively calm, and if you encounter flooding, move to higher ground.

--Monitor weather radios and news broadcasts for updated information on current and anticipated severe weather in your area.

--Keep in mind that flood dangers are even harder to recognize at night.

--Be mindful that rising and moving water can also threaten people on foot and individuals near recreational waterways impacted by significant rainfall.

It’s time for the 4th Annual Brown Backyard Bash!

The Brown Bash was founded in an effort to help the Down Syndrome Association of Brazos Valley (DSABV), a nonprofit organization, to raise funds for those affected by Down syndrome. The mission of DSABV is to enlighten the public by promoting a positive understanding of Down syndrome in the community and be a source of support, information, and education for families and individuals affected by Down syndrome.

The Bash is held in the Brown Family’s backyard, located south of Teague, Texas on the corner of County Roads 841 and 844.

Organizers are pleased to announce last year’s Annual Brown Backyard Bash donated $25,000 to the DSABV through sponsorships and donations from businesses and individuals. Their goal this year is to reach as many in our community in an effort to increase our donation and be a part of this amazing gift and positive support for those families and individuals through the DSABV. The 4th Annual Brown Backyard Bash will kick off Friday, June 5th, with the

Chris Wayne Band performing along with the Cook’s Choice portion of the BBQ cook-off.

Saturday, June 6th the day will begin at 8:00 a.m. with a 5K marathon followed by a 42 Tournament that will begin at 9:00 a.m. The BBQ Cook Off will be judged from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon for Chicken, Ribs and Brisket.

There will be a huge water slide for the kids to enjoy all day.

Also on Saturday, the Horseshoe Tournament will begin at 1:00 p.m. and the Washer Tournament immediately following.

Delicious crawfish will be served at 6:30 p.m., and the raffle and awards will begin at 8:00 p.m.

Raffle items include a 110X Felt Hat, Yeti Cooler, Gas Grill, 270 Rifle, Youth Gun, $600 Travel Voucher and other prizes. Tickets for the raffle are $5 per ticket or $20 for 5 tickets.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, as part of a coalition with 49 other states, the District of Columbia and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), today announced settlements with deceptive cancer charities and their operators, who scammed more than $187 million from consumers throughout the country. The settlements with two organizations and three individuals net judgments of nearly $137 million, while litigation continues against those who have not yet settled.

Texas Connection The Cancer Fund entities used false, misleading and deceptive representations in their solicitations to Texans through telephone calls and direct mail, raising millions in cash donations from generous Texans, violating the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices – Consumer Protection Act. Prior to the proposed settlement, The Breast Cancer Society raised $45,000 to open a new Hope Supply Warehouse in Houston as a storage facility for donations.

The facility never opened, and under the proposed settlement the funds will be transferred to a qualified Texas charity that provides direct assistance to breast cancer patients.

Settlement Agreement The proposed settlements require that Children’s Cancer Fund and The Breast Cancer Society be dissolved, and the five defendants be banned from fundraising, operating a charity and overseeing charitable assets.

--Obituaries Lucille Floyd Wathen

Lucille Floyd Wathen was born in W Greene, AL on July 17, 1922 and passed away in Fairfield, TX on May 23, 2015.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, May 30, 2015 at First United Methodist Church of Beaumont, TX with Pastor T. Paul Kethley officiating.

A reception will follow the service.

Lucille was married to Evan H. “Slats” Wathen for 49 1/2 years before his passing in 2005. Together they were active in their community and raised their eight children.

Theirs was a partnership where Slats was usually the one who shined and Lucille was his “help-meet” in the truest description of the term, a full partner balancing him, supporting him and was the wind beneath his wings helping him to achieve the accomplishments that he was noted for. But her life cannot be defined only in that regard.

She was so much more.

Raised in a Methodist Pastor’s multigenerational parsonage family, her family moved frequently from appointment to appointment. Arriving in Texas at the age of 7, she lived in Markum, Athens, Larue, Winona, Canton, Alto, and finished high school in Silsbee.

She also lived in Galveston, Palestine, Pt. Arthur, Rosenberg, Vidor - where she met Slats & then Beaumont for the next 50 years before moving to Fairfield for the last 10 years of her life. As she grew up in a strong Christian faith, while her life might have been fragmented by all the moves, her family life stayed strong. They learned to face changes together and she accepted her faith in Jesus, learned how to serve that faith no matter where she was, and the traditions of Methodism. As an adult, she began to serve in the church and to be an active member of the Body of Christ, serving in Sunday School Departments, the Youth Department, United Methodist Women’s groups, and other assorted

committees. One area in which she was able to use her long years of experience within the Methodist tradition, was her leadership of first the Altar Guild & later the Worship Committee. She served willingly, giving of her talents & skills but it was in her home where she made the most difference: loving eight children, each with their own unique needs, modeling for them what it meant to be loving, gracious, forgiving, and faithful. She was a classy Lady in character and wit, with a quick sense of humor that she didn’t always share but you might have caught a glimpse of in the twinkle of her blue blue eyes. Impeccable manners that she exhibited right up to the end of her life along with a true goodness and kindness, won the hearts of everyone she met throughout her years. Most of all she taught her children that love is what matters most.

Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Eugene Floyd, Sr., and Margaret Lunette Daugherty, a brother and two sisters; her husband, Evan H. “Slats” Wathen, son, Cody H. Wathen, sons (in law) Sweeney King, Jeff Patterson, Charles Jones, and Don Keith.

Lucille, our Mother, Mom, Memaw, Mimi, Ms. Luci, Best Friend, Sister in Christ will be remembered by her children, Lunette King of Houston, TX, Ray and Teri Wathen of Richmond, TX, Carolyn Patterson of Indianapolis, IN, Ellen Jones of Fairfield, TX, J Scott and Deborah Wathen, of Weatherford, TX, Grace Wathen of Fairfield, TX, Peggy and Leland Knapp of Rockport, TX; 17 grandchildren and 29 1/2 great-grandchildren; her sisters-in-law, Patricia Floyd, Liberty, TX, Martha Smith, Beaumont, TX, Nita Carol Wathen, Austin, TX, and a brother-in-law, Thurman “Shug” and Julie Wathen, Roseburg, OR, along with many nieces and nephews.

Richard R. McAdams

Richard R. McAdams, 95, of Fairfield, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at his residence. Graveside services with military rites were held 10:00 a.m.

Saturday, May 23, 2015 at Mt. Zion Cemetery with Mr. David McAdams officiating.

Mr. McAdams, one of thirteen children, was born January 24, 1920 at the family home near Fairfield, to parents Alvin Floyd and Myrtis Childs McAdams. He left Fairfield to serve in the U.S. Army during WWII in the South Pacific.

During his military service he received four Overseas Service Bars, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars, one Bronze Arrowhead Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star and a Good Conduct Medal. Following the war Mr. McAdams resided in Pasadena, Texas for almost 30 years. He married Billie Monroe in 1949 and she preceded him in death in 2008.

Mr. McAdams was an accomplished carpenter specializing in cabinet making. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by five brothers, five sisters and a niece Diane Chappell.

Left to cherish his memory is two sisters, Mary Bonner of Teague and Myrtle Walthall of Fairfield; two nephews; Ronny McAdams and wife Jan of Fairfield and Joe Chappell of Fairfield; two great-nieces, Ashley McAdams and Melissa Gressett of Fairfield; greatnephew, Bryan Chappell of Fairfield along with many other nieces and nephews and other family.

Texas State Soil & Water Board Member Elections

José O. Dodier Jr. of Zapata, local SWCD board, Buckles Scott Buckles of Stratford, served on the Association and Barry Mahler of Iowa of Texas Soil and Water Districts Park were all re-elected May Conservation 5, 2015 to serve a two-year board of directors. “Hoop for Help” will be held in the First Baptist Church Christian Life Center (CLC), 303 S. Mount St, Fairfield, Texas beginning at 8:00 a.m.

by Cornerstone Full Gospel Church.

This is a Bracket Style Tournament for women only, 25 years and up.

Maglite’s Tony Maglica:

Torchbearer of the American Dream

by Michelle Malkin In our home, we try to instill a life lesson for our kids best summed up in Latin: Nihil boni sine labore. It means, “Nothing good achieved without hard work.” Few people I’ve met in my lifetime embody this motto better and more brilliantly than Tony Maglica, inventor of the iconic Maglite flashlight.

The spry 84-year-old founder and CEO of Mag Instrument still traverses his 450,000-squarefoot factory floor dozens of times over the course of his 12-hour workday, six days a week, beginning at the crack of dawn and ending after most of his 800 employees have clocked out. I visited his Ontario, Calif., headquarters while doing research for my new book, “Who Built That: Awe-Inspiring Stories of American Tinkerpreneurs.”

Born on the tiny island of Zlarin off the coast of Croatia, Maglica came here determined to make something of himself.

His first job was sewing piecework in a sweatshop at 50 cents an hour. He worked hard to assimilate, teaching himself English from a dictionary. With his wife and young child in tow, the ambitious 20-year-old tinkerer packed up a rusted, bald-tired 1947 Studebaker and headed West.

In Denver, he found employment as a machinist, but aroused the ire of union shop leaders who complained when he completed more pieces than his colleagues or skipped his mandated breaks.

“Why were they so angry that I wanted to work? I came here to work!” Tony exclaimed to me. He packed up and headed with his family to California, where the promise of $3-anhour jobs beckoned. In 1955, he rented a tiny garage in working-class South El Monte, whose motto is “City of Achievement,” to do contract machinery work.

“This is where it all started,” Tony showed me, pointing to an old black-and-white photo of a shed with bars on its narrow window slits. He scraped together $125 as a down payment on the $1,000 machinery.

The superior quality of Tony’s precision tool work on U.S. missiles and satellites won him several loyal aerospace and defense clients. Tony worked harder, faster and longer than other contractors to get a job done.

He slept in the garage on his workbench to meet deadlines.

Tony innovated and patented improvements on precision tool devices and incorporated Mag Instrument in 1974.

While fulfilling orders for a long-defunct flashlight parts manufacturer, a proverbial bulb flashed in Tony’s head.

Before he came along, flashlights were ugly, flimsy objects. They were called “flash lights” because the carbon filament bulbs were inefficient and could not produce a steady stream of light. Dissatisfied with the state of flashlight design, Tony

innovated a strong, sleek torch of anodized aluminum, which resists corrosion inside and out. He crafted self-cleaning contacts, “a pushbutton switch instead of a slide switch, and an adjustable beam, so you could go from flood to spotlight.” The torch’s three seams are sealed with O-rings for water resistance.

by Tony in 1978 and approved by the Patent Office in August 1981, ushered in a new age of heavy, rugged flashlights with powerful beams used by police officers, firefighters and other first responders who tell jaw-dropping stories of how their Maglites saved lives.

Consumers embraced his products as household necessities, too. Admirers dubbed his torch “engineered light” and a “work of art that works.” An unapologetic guardian of his intellectual property rights, Maglite has spent more than $100 million battling infringers.

The company has never lost a lawsuit.

From Day One, Tony vowed to manufacture products that were 100-percent American.

Tony doesn’t just build flashlights in America. He builds many of the machines that build those flashlights.

“Politicians always talk about supporting American manufacturing. I have done it,” Tony told me.

“Government doesn’t innovate. People like me do.

Government doesn’t create jobs. We do.”

When Mag Instrument needed a certain battery clip, it refused to import the part from China. Tony designed his own clip and spent $1 million tooling up his plant to manufacture the parts inhouse and in-country. Maglite defiantly refuses to outsource workers because “it would offend against his faith in the American free-enterprise system, and against the spirit of giving back. Mr. Maglica knows that Mag Instrument got where it is by being an American company.”

The owner of 200 other patents, Tony the tireless tinkerpreneur showed me an empty lab room where he had been developing new, revolutionary incandescent bulb parts. The machinery is dormant.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency forbade him from producing the bulbs in the wake of the government’s incandescent bulb ban. He had planned to hire more workers to make the new products. Those plans are off. “That was such a shame,” Tony told me. “Such a waste.”

But he remains undaunted and undeterred in pursuit of the American Dream.

Unlike the golfer in chief at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue who mocks wealthy capitalists as “society’s lottery winners,” Tony hasn’t taken a vacation in more than a decade and doesn’t plan to anytime soon: “As long as I’m alive, I will never give up.”

For the self-made makers and builders of America, it’s a lifelong creed: Nihil boni sine labore.

Long Ball Powers Lions Into Regional Semifinals The Teague Lions launched a pair of homers over the series and defeated district mate Clifton in a two game sweep to advance to the regional semifinals this weekend.

The Lions will take on the New Waverly Bulldogs in best of three series at Mumford High School. The first game will be played on Friday at 7pm and game two is scheduled for a 2pm start on Saturday afternoon.

The deciding game will be played 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game, if necessary.

The Teague offense took advantage of some critical errors by the Clifton defense but Aaron Mitchell supplied the power to get game one.

Aaron Mitchell took the ball on the mound in game one and his defense stranded a first inning walk. The Lion offense could not take advantage, however, of three errors that loaded the bases. The errors

were two fielding errors and one throwing error. Clifton pitcher Zach Potts pitched out of the jam and left the score tied at the end of one.

Harris beat the Lions 1-0 in district play but today would not be his day to shine. The Lion offense pounded out 13 hits and Brooks tossed a five hit shutout in the 7-0 series clinching win.

STATE HONORS This year, Fairfield High School has two students advancing to STATE UIL ACADEMIC MEET. They are Matt Mooneyham – Poetry Interpretation and Hannah Spradlin – Ready Writing.

FHS also had several students who advanced to the STATE TRACK MEET this year.

Individually, DeMeka Shed place 7th in the 300 Hurdles and Charles Oliver placed 3rd in the 200 Meters.

The boys were the regional champions and finished 3rd and the state meet. Running the Relays were Tyrin West, Rahiem Hayes, Michael Gibson, Charles Oliver, Keishaun Cunningham and Michael Hudson.

The 400 Meter Relay team took 2nd Place in State competition; the 200 Meter Relay team placed 4th.

Finally, for the 25th time in 26 years, Fairfield High School won the district UIL Academic Meet. This is also the 25th time in 26 years that FHS has won the Spring Sweepstakes Trophy, which includes scores from academics, golf, tennis and track & field.

Movie Review: ‘Tomorrowland’

“Tomorrowland” is an uneven film. It gets off on the wrong foot, builds promisingly, has a terrific middle, but then stumbles and meanders its way toward an underwhelming conclusion. Let’s get the worst scene out of the way first. At the 1964 World’s Fair, young Frank (Thomas Robinson) presents a homemade jetpack to the judge of an invention contest (Hugh Laurie). The judge asks him what purpose of the jetpack serves. Frank responds, “Why can’t it just be fun?” The line is supposed to paint Frank as a wise, whimsical dreamer.

The problem is that a jetpack is going to have a much higher purpose than just fun. Frank has theoretically revolutionized transportation with a device that allows man to fly independently of an airplane, and here he is assigning it the same purpose as a pair of novelty chattering teeth.

It’s hard to take Frank seriously as a genius after that.

The film manages to pick itself up. Frank is given a mysterious pin by cryptic child Athena

(Raffey Cassidy), who invites him to stealthily follow her. He stows away in a prototype of an iconic Disneyland ride (ironically one not located in the Tomorrowland section of the park) and winds up in the intellectual paradise of Tomorrowland. Flash forward to present day. Teenage sciencelover and perpetual optimist Casey (Britt Robertson, too old to be playing a high-school student) is given one of the mysterious pins. The pin gives her a vision of Tomorrowland and she is so entranced that she goes on a cross-country adventure to find out how to get there. Eventually she teams up with Athena, still as cryptic and childlike as ever, and an older, jaded Frank (George Clooney), who thinks that Casey might just be the key to saving humanity.

The trio does make it to Tomorrowland around the film’s two-thirds mark, but the best stretch of the film is the time between Casey’s imagined trip and the actual trip. The early visions of Tomorrowland are spectacular (think of an entire city designed by World’s Fair

architects with people dressed in the most extravagant futuristic fashion), the three characters are funny and endearing in their chemistry, and we get some mature action sequences for a kids’ movie. Casey is hunted by some evil robots who turn intrusive humans to dust, and Frank doesn’t think twice about absolutely brutalizing the killing machines. Even Athena takes a nasty hit that’s shocking to see happen to a child. I’m not necessarily saying that kids won’t be able to handle this violence, just that violence is definitely present.

The movie winds up in Tomorrowland, which has lost its luster under the leadership of Governor Nix (Laurie). Nix has been sending out a doomsday prophecy to all of humanity, and rather than do anything about it, we’ve all subconsciously chosen to accept it. He, in turn, has long since accepted that we’re not going to do anything about it, so he’s not going to do anything about it either. But at least our heroes are determined to do something about it. The

message of the film is that you shouldn’t just accept that the world is doomed, but you also have to make an effort to save it. It’s a good message turned annoying by being hammered in too frequently.

There were parts of “Tomorrowland” where I thought it was going to go down as one of the best movies of the year. It has some of the best sequences of the year, especially Casey’s initial vision of the city (which is going to get some Oscar nominations for about two minutes of screen time), but the movie as a whole loses its way toward the end with a convoluted “mankind is dooming itself” storyline that you can get from any number of recent action movies. It’s an ambitious movie that doesn’t quite live up to its potential.

“Tomorrowland” is rated PG for sequences of sci-fi action violence and peril, thematic elements, and language. Its running time is 130 minutes.

In the Tree House: Another End to Another School Year

by Samantha S. Daviss And so the panic ensues. What are we going to do with these creatures that we were blessed with for three whole months? Not only have we put the clutch in as parents somewhere around lateMarch to early April, forgetting to pack lunches, don’t lay the clothes out anymore the night before school, and bath time is no longer a routine it is just pure necessity when the odors begin to linger around the car and the house.

The end of school is such a joy in many ways, we get to take summer vacations together as families, we get to spend time at the pool playing and laughing, or quality time floating and splashing in the lake. You don’t have to get up at the crack of dawn any more, for at least two and a half months; not that you have been at this point in the school year. You’re lucky if you’ve been rolling out of bed in time to wake them, cram a

granola bar down their throats and rush them out the door.

Your calendar looks like the Bic pen factory threw up all over it due to all the after school sports and activities, all of the endof-the-year school programs, the birthday parties that are happening for all the summer kids, and not to mention the possibility that you might get a night off with your significant other to sit and have a breather from it all. But that is most likely not true. There are highlights, white outs, games cancelled, and games re-scheduled.

May is such a pretty month, but it is the most dreaded month for all school-aged parents. It is non-stop from sun up to sun down. You have to get camp clothes together in the midst of all these activities. You have to make sure the kids are tended to during the day if you work during the summer, and you have to come up with activities

for them to do and coordinate playdates with other parents.

May is the month from hell.

There’s not a calendar big enough to handle all the goings on during the month. I think May wears me out more than the holiday season does, I look forward to nothing more than this month to end.

And then the unknown of summer begins. The inevitable…

“What in the world do we do with them all summer?” These little creatures are climbing all over you, bored to tears, and you just want to pull your hair out. Even though they have a garage full of toys, games, bikes and all sorts of activities…you literally have to draw them a road map as to how to entertain themselves these days.

When I was a kid, I woke up, had my cereal in front of my summer time cartoons, threw my swim suit and shorts on and didn’t come back in the house until

my mom yelled for dinner. I was either in my playhouse pretending I was taking my imaginary kids to school and running errands, or I was swimming, or I was playing hide-out with my dog under some bushes where we had created our own secret fort.

But soon all of us parents will be utterly exhausted from the activities and entertainment of summer, and will have to get prepped again for school. Fresh haircuts, new back packs, an updated wardrobe, and of course the energy to start all over again. For the first few months everyone will lay their clothes out the night before, baths will be taken, and homework will be done. Then come the holidays, the homework is left at school, the clothes are wadded up on the closet floor, and the lunches get made about half the time.

And once again April will roll around and there will be no baths, clothes will be worn again without being washed, and the lunch money will have to be driven back out to the school because not only was a lunch not made, but the money was not exchanged between parent and child at drop off.

And thus concludes another exciting school year and the start of summer chaos.

Weather Whys: Yes, It Can Rain Spiders and Fish -- And Frogs

Q: It’s been all over the news that it was “raining” spiders in Australia the past few days. It’s not possible to rain cats and dogs, but sometimes you hear about frogs and other animals coming down from the sky. Is this possible?

Q: What causes these things to fall from the sky?

A: The most generally accepted answer is that small creatures, such as fish or frogs, are sucked up high into the air by either very strong thunderstorms or tornadoes, McRoberts explains. “Over the ocean, a waterspout — a tornado that forms over water — can produce strong enough winds to carry small fish into the air. There are instances of some of these creatures being carried long distances because there was no water nearby. Maybe one of the strangest occurred in 1877 when The New York Times reported that several small alligators had fallen from the sky onto a South Carolina farm, and in August of 2001, the Wichita, Kansas, area experienced rain mixed with cornhusks, some of them 30 inches long.”

Fair Exhibitors Prepare Livestock Projects As school is winding down, 4-H and FFA students are getting their animals in top shape for the livestock shows at the 2015 Freestone County Fair and Rodeo.

With generations of tradition in some families, and quality teachers and club leaders in our county, the bar is set high for these young exhibitors. Although entries are down by 7% from last year, spectators should not be disappointed in the quality of these animals.

Here are the numbers, according to the County Extension office: In the Breeding category, there will be 24 lamb, 26 goats, 57 swine, 49 heifers and 23 rabbits.

Breeding Sheep will be judged beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16th. Judging for Breeding Meat Goats will immediately follow.

The Breeding Swine show will be held bright and early on Wednesday, June 17th, beginning at 8:00 a.m. Judging for Breeding Beef will be held later that day at 1:00 p.m.

Judging of Breeding Rabbits will be conducted later in the week on Friday, June 19th, beginning at 1:00 p.m.

In the Market category, there will be 22 broilers, 45 goat, 97 swine, 32 lamb, 30 steer and 37 rabbits.

Judging for Market Poultry will start at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 18th, followed by Market Sheep (approx. 9:00 a.m.) and then Market Goats (about 1:00 p.m.). Market Steers will be judged beginning at 5:00 p.m. that same day.

Market Swine will take the arena at 8:00 a.m. on Friday, June 19th. Market Rabbits will be judged in conjunction with the Breeding Rabbits 1:00 p.m. on Friday.

The top winners of all the Market Shows will be auctioned off during the Livestock Show Sale, beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2015.

Rodeo fans of all ages will have the opportunity to compete during the Freestone County Fair & Rodeo, being held the third week in June at the fairgrounds in Fairfield, Texas.

In County Team Roping competition will be held on Sunday, June 14th at the Fairfield City Arena. Books close and 5; Team Roping will start 6.

This is a Handicap Team Roping #8 / add 1 second for higher classification of Team Roper.

Entry fee is Draw 4 for $100, Draw 8 for $200. If you draw 8, you may pick two entries for $30 per man.

This Team Roping event is only for Freestone County residents. You must be a graduate of a Freestone County school, pay taxes in Freestone County or live in Freestone County.

Mystery Shopper Alysia Cook (right) told business owners attending last week’s Business Forum that apathy seems to be the most pervasive problem in customer service.

“Nothing horrible or terrible,” she says of her experiences in Fairfield, Texas, “just a lack of enthusiasm.”

Cook went on to say that many of the places she visited in Fairfield had, “LOTS of enthusiasm.”

VAPG grants can be used to develop new product lines from raw agricultural products or additional uses for already developed product lines. Military veterans, socially disadvantaged,

and beginning farmers and ranchers; operators of small- and medium-sized family farms and ranches; farmer and rancher cooperatives; and applicants that propose mid-tier value chain projects are given special priority in applying for VAPGs. Additional priority is given to group applicants who seek funding for projects that “best contribute” to creating or increasing marketing opportunities for these type of operators.

Since 2009, USDA has awarded 853 Value-Added Producer Grants totaling $104.5 million. Approximately 19 percent of the grants and 13 percent of total funding has been awarded to beginning farmers and ranchers. During the 20132014 funding cycle, nearly half of VAPG awards went to farmers and ranchers developing products for the local food sector. Value-Added Producer Grants are a key element of the USDA’s Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food Initiative, which coordinates the Department’s

work on local and regional food systems.

Secretary Vilsack has identified local and regional food systems as one of the four pillars of rural economic development.

Congress increased funding for the VAPG program when it passed the 2014 Farm Bill. That law builds on historic economic gains in rural America over the past six years, while achieving meaningful reform and billions of dollars in savings for taxpayers.

State Unemployment Rate Remains at Lowest Level Since July 2007 Texas has added an estimated 287,000 seasonally adjusted jobs over the past year including a modest gain in April with the addition of 1,200 positions during the month. The state has experienced job gains in three of the first four months of 2015.

“Texas employers added jobs in seven of 11 major

industries,” said Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Chairman Andres Alcantar. “TWC and our 28 local workforce boards across the state remain focused on connecting the Texas workforce with jobs being created by employers.”

Our May meeting was opened with prayer by Ann Gokey and the pledges to the American and Texas flags. We were excited to have folks from Corsicana and Mexia join us.

Paul Johnson from Tyler was our first speaker who began by saying “Our country is in perilous times.” It is important to be prepared for numerous possibilities whether from nature or man-made disasters. The recent tornado in Van, TX is an example of how quickly our lives can be changed. Most will agree that a seventy two hour plan is a great start. A good plan is based on the knowledge of the Rule of Three: We can only live three minutes without air, three days without water, and three weeks without food.

Alan Herring, also from Tyler, gave some information on what you can do to prepare. Basics would include food, water and shelter. There are numerous ways to create your survival kit from an old backpack or roller bag. Each individual needs to decide what is critical for their family. A first decision in a crisis is deciding whether to stay where you are or going to another location that better meets your survival needs. Suggestions of things to have ready and available include freeze dried foods, canned food, water, coffee, first aid kits, baking soda, peroxide, bleach, vinegar, toilet paper, paper towels, flashlights, water purification tablets, tarps, prescription drugs, knife, cooking utensil, matches, rain pancho, umbrella, personal items, radio, etc. There was a frightening discussion on the possibility of an Electro Magnetic Pulse and what the result could be. With no utilities, transportation, communication, etc. we would be back to living “Little House on the Prairie,” but without the acquired knowledge of how to do it well.

We also had a good discussion on Jade Helm 15 scheduled for this summer. This round of military training exercises is taking place on private lands instead of military installations. Many are concerned about what it may mean for the future. If you are not familiar, please research. This is very important to our state.

Don Anderson spoke briefly on safety for our homes and city. We had great participation from the audience with lots of questions and suggestions.

Thomas McNutt, from Corsicana, introduced himself and announced he will be running for State Representative for our District 8.

The Freestone County TEA Party will skip our meeting in June, due to a conflict with the parade and county fair. Please join us on July 20 to welcome Congressman Bill Flores. This is an opportunity to meet our representative in the House in Washington D.C. and let him know what our concerns are.

The False God of Politics

by Cal Thomas If you visit Mount Olympus, you will see scores of crumbling statues to false gods once worshipped by ancient Greeks. The same is true in Rome, where statues of political gods, notably those named Caesar, lay in ruins.

We are more sophisticated today. Moderns don’t bow to Zeus. Many of us, though, put our faith in the false god of politics, despite its track record of not being able to achieve all of the things we project upon it.

The late comedian George Carlin may have put the blame for this where it belongs: “Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.”

In order to accurately judge an idea, policy, or individual “stupid,” one must first have a standard by which stupid can be measured.

Now comes two far-left politicians who apparently believe their philosophy is not receiving the worship it is due, despite a track record of failure. Hillary Clinton continues to move left, jettisoning positions she once held from support of the Iraq War, to her “evolving” stance on same-sex marriage -believing voters headed that way will put her in the White House.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has one-upped Hillary Clinton by publishing a 13-point plan he calls “The Progressive Agenda to Combat Income Inequality,” which some have compared to Newt Gingrich’s 1994 “Contract with America.” De Blasio’s proposal, though, might be likened to a contract hit on America.

As The Economist noted, de Blasio’s plan is “short on detail (such as how to pay

for anything), but big on vision, it calls for raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour and indexing it to inflation; bolstering unions; bringing in national paid sick and family leave and universal pre-kindergarten; ending tax breaks for firms outsourcing overseas, and closing tax loopholes for the rich.”

Where to begin? Not worrying about paying for anything is classic liberalism.

If they aren’t raising taxes, they are borrowing money from China to achieve their “vision,” though it’s more like a mirage.

The minimum wage has been converted into something it was never intended to be -a permanent salary regarded as the chief support for a worker’s family long term.

Instead, it should be taken for what it is, an entry-level position that gives workers an opportunity to move up to a better job at higher pay, taking full advantage of advanced training programs offered to them.

Raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour, however, may result in robots replacing workers. Food will be ordered from a computer at your table. It’s already happening in some restaurants.

Bolstering unions means more workers paying more dues so more unions can give more money to the Democratic Party.

National paid sick leave?

Why do liberals focus so much on time off instead of productivity? Such a policy would be ripe for abuse.

The Myths of Revenue Caps & Appraisal Caps Revenue caps and appraisal caps are again being touted by some legislators as a solution to increases in property tax appraisals and revenues. These misguided restrictions have been tried in California, Florida and Colorado with disastrous results. Let’s look at the real driver of property taxes in Texas.First, Texas is a low-tax state, ranking around 45th among the states in total state and local taxation. However, Texas is a high property-tax state. Why? Because Texas has no state income tax, and the state has mandated that local governments (schools, counties and cities) perform functions and services that are statefunded in other states. What tool has the state given to local governments to fund these mandated functions? The local property tax. Further, the state has prescribed a system of property appraisal guaranteed to keep appraisals high, ensuring an increasing source of

property tax funding for public schools and limiting the amount of state funding.

The appraisal system certainly needs reform (such as uniform price disclosure) to repair the inequities in the process, but artificial limits that distort the values is not an answer.

Second, local governments, especially counties, are caught in an impossible situation.

Faced with unfunded mandates from the state and rising costs of services for an increasing population, they must either curtail their discretionary services — such as law enforcement and transportation — to continue the mandated services, or increase their tax revenue. No local official looks forward to increasing property taxes. They must pay them on their own property, and they must explain the necessity to their voters. However, the present statutes allow no other options if public safety is to be maintained and the roads are to

remain passable.

Imposing revenue caps and appraisal caps on local government will not reduce the cost of local government by one cent, but it will reduce local services that citizens need. If the state Legislature wants to join local governments in their efforts to restrain property tax increases, it should provide funding for its mandated services and release the dedicated funds that are being improperly held to balance the state budget.

their political and social image by getting kids attuned to the things liberals believe to be true. Many argue that the progressive outlook seeks to undermine the authority of parents and teach that government is good, especially when headed by Democrats.

Parents, not politicians, are the ultimate deciders on how and where their children should be educated. School choice is the answer. Providing vouchers lets parents sidestep failing public schools and the indoctrination in favor of an academic environment that offers a better education and less brainwashing.

The answer to firms that outsource jobs overseas is to reform a tax structure that has caused them to flee the country. Ditto on loopholes. A flat tax or fair tax eliminates all loopholes and most deductions and would free up capital that would produce more investment at home, leading to more jobs, more people working and more tax revenue.

Though false gods can’t deliver, stupid people still act as if they can. Republican presidential candidates must have a message that will bring Americans to their senses and remind them of economic, foreign policy and moral standards that once produced results.

For the second consecutive month, the Amarillo Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) boasted the lowest unemployment rate in the state with a 2.7 percent not seasonally adjusted rate in April. The Midland MSA had the second lowest rate for the month at 2.9 percent, followed by the Austin-Round Rock and Lubbock MSAs, each of which posted a rate of 3.0 percent.

Alligator Gar Fishing Closed on Trinity River Due to flooding conditions on the Trinity River, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is temporarily prohibiting fishing for alligator gar in portions of the river between the Highway 31 Bridge near Trinidad and the Highway 7 Bridge near Crockett.

TPWD Executive Director Carter Smith issued the emergency order on Tuesday, May 12, to temporarily prohibit taking or attempting to take alligator gar in order to protect spawning alligator gar, which is a species of conservation concern in the Trinity River. The order takes effect immediately and will remain in effect for not more than 30 days and can be rescinded before that date if conditions warrant. While the order is in effect, anglers cannot fish for or harvest alligator gar in the Trinity River and flooded backwaters in the reach of the river specified above.

The temporary prohibition does not affect alligator gar fishing in parts of the state other than those areas of the Trinity River detailed above.

Department staff has been monitoring water conditions this spring for indications of conditions that normally trigger spawning by alligator gar. Water conditions targeted by staff, such as water temperature above 68degrees F and presence of a flood level at the moderate stage as reported by U.S. Geological Survey gauges http://www. srh.noaa.gov/wgrfc/ are currently occurring.

Typically, alligator gar do not spawn every year.

Research data indicate alligator gar in Texas have the greatest chance at spawning successfully if the creation of preferred spawning habitat (the seasonal inundation of low-lying areas of vegetation) occurs in late spring through early summer. Because the

conditions for spawning do not exist on a regular basis, and because spawning occurs in shallow waters where numerous gar can be concentrated in one area, alligator gar are extremely vulnerable to harvest during spawning.

The TPW Commission in 2009 adopted a daily bag limit of one alligator gar per person, which was intended to protect adult fish while allowing limited harvest, thus ensuring population stability. This action was taken to protect alligator gar populations in Texas, as Texas is one of the last remaining strongholds for the species in the U. S. Since 2009, the department has been conducting research to determine the estimated harvest of alligator gar, quantify reproduction, understand habitat usage and determine geographic differences in populations. ____________________

Agreement to Protect Consumer Privacy in RadioShack Case Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton today announced a settlement regarding RadioShack’s proposed sale of its customers’ personally identifiable information in connection with the sale of RadioShack’s trademark and intellectual property. A coalition of 38 states, led

by Texas, joined together to oppose the sale of consumer data. Under the terms of the settlement agreement reached after mediation, the overwhelming bulk of RadioShack’s consumer data will be destroyed, and no credit or debit card account numbers, social security numbers, dates of birth or even phone numbers will be transferred. “This settlement is a victory for consumer privacy

nationwide,� Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said. “The fact that 38 states joined together in this case reflects a growing understanding of the importance of safeguarding customer information, and we are pleased that General Wireless will continue to be bound by RadioShack’s existing privacy policy.�

General Wireless obtained bankruptcy court approval to purchase RadioShack’s entire e-commerce business, intellectual property and remaining assets, including certain customer data limited by this settlement. The iconic electronic retailer will continue to employ approximately 10,000 former RadioShack employees including 1,500 in Texas. In March, General Wireless, a subsidiary

of RadioShack’s largest shareholder, purchased 1,750 RadioShack stores out of the bankruptcy.

Out of the 8.5 million customer email addresses in RadioShack’s files, the new owner will be allowed to retain only the email addresses of those who specifically requested product information in the last two years. General Wireless further agreed it will not sell or share any of this customer information in the future with any other entity, including its new co-branded business partner Sprint Communications.

TPW Commission Adopts Changes to Commercial Shrimp & Oyster Rules Commercial bay shrimpers will no longer have to cull small shrimp during the fall season, thanks to regulation changes adopted Thursday by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission.

The elimination of a 50 heads on shrimp per pound count/size requirement for commercial bay shrimpers in inside waters during the fall season (Aug. 15-Oct. 31) should help reduce resource waste that occurs from undersized shrimp mortality during the culling process.

The commission also clarified reference to the effective date of federal rules stipulating

turtle excluder device (TEDs) requirements and corrected an outdated statement regarding the waters in which TEDs are required.

In addition, the commission approved changes to commercial oyster fishing regulations requiring dead oyster shell greater than ž� to be returned to the reef at the time of harvest and be counted as an undersized oyster, and amended the definition of “sack of oysters� to include dead oyster shell greater than ž�.

Many of the state’s oyster reefs have been depleted and hundreds of thousands of

cubic yards of cultch (material, such as oyster shell, that furnishes a place for larval oysters to attach and grow to maturity) have been removed from the state’s public oyster reefs as a consequence of oyster dredging. The majority of the cultch removed from public reefs is not recovered.

The continuing removal of shell from oyster habitat poses a threat to the viability of the state’s oyster fishery, because a reduction in the cultch juvenile oysters depend on for growth results in less recruitment and, potentially, fewer legal-sized oysters.

A Texas Game Warden investigation sparked by social media posts on Facebook detailing the killing of an 11foot alligator has resulted in the arrests of two Killeen men.

Texas Game Wardens today arrested Bradley Gillis, 26, and James Haff, 33, on Class A misdemeanor charges for taking wildlife resources without landowner consent.

The pair was booked into the Bell County Jail. Bond was set at $7,500 each.

Game wardens in Bell County learned about the killing of a large alligator along the Lampasas River above Stillhouse Hollow Reservoir earlier in the week, including alleged details

and photos on Facebook.

Wardens then used the same social media outlet to solicit information from the public.

The game warden Facebook post garnered statewide news media attention, as well as numerous tips from the public that helped in the investigation.

Alligators have been observed in the Lampasas River above Stillhouse Hollow Reservoir for many years and reports of illegal harvest or documented dangerous interactions with the recreating public or local livestock have been extremely rare.

Alligators may be taken in Texas on private property only during the April 1-June 30 open season outside a 22-

county core area in southeast Texas. Alligators may be taken from public waters adjacent to private land by all lawful means except firearms; however, the person taking the alligator and the taking device must be on private property. State law requires that if a person wants to engage in alligator hunting, they must be licensed, have prior landowner permission and a tag must be purchased upon harvest.

National Rice Month Scholarship Expands Eligibility in Texas and other Rice Producing States Dow AgroSciences continues its commitment to the agriculture industry by sponsoring the USA Rice Federation National Rice Month Scholarship Program, expanding the opportunity from students in U.S.- rice producing counties to students in all U.S. riceproducing states.

High school graduates in the 2015-16 school year are encouraged to apply for scholarships totaling $8,500.

To apply, students must create a promotional program that highlights U.S.-grown rice for National Rice Month in September. Applicants can submit a synopsis of their promotion in a variety of ways, including in video format, which will be accepted this year for the first time.

The scholarship program is now open to students who live in any county in Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Texas. Three scholarships will be awarded based on the originality and effectiveness of the winning entries.

AgroSciences is supporting this scholarship program for the sixth year in a row and opening up the opportunity to all youth in rice-producing states,” says Darla Huff, rice product manager, Dow AgroSciences.

“Supporting our youth and educating the public about agriculture is integral to the success of the rice industry.”

Nicholas Schafer, a high school senior from Carlisle, Arkansas, was the grandprize scholarship winner in 2014 for his promotion titled “Do you Know Where Your Rice Comes From?” The promotion educated children from his community about the origin of their food and the intricacies of farming.

“They need to understand all the hard work put into growing rice,” Schafer says.
