Make a difference by supporting the Freemen’s Foundation Freemen’s was originally set up to provide an education for orphaned children of Freemen of the City of London. The School has changed tremendously since then, but the ethos here remains the same.

The new Freemen’s Foundation endeavours to help change lives through bursaries. We are at an exciting point in Freemen’s history and have some ambitious plans: we hope you will want to be a part of them.

Can you help us make a difference?

Students at Freemen’s are given opportunities to learn, to lead and to make a difference. Learning is at the heart of school, though it is the journey to learn that is the essential part of our education. We hope to bring out the potential in our young people, whatever their leadership strengths and personal profiles, in order that they can be prepared fully for adulthood.

Crucially, we want young people to leave Freemen’s with strong values and a reliable moral compass, with the intention that they will wish to give something back to the communities in which they find themselves. In a world that is increasingly uncertain, we want our alumni to be a reliable presence, keen to act responsibly and apt to be generous with the gifts that they have been given.

Giving the gift of a Freemen’s education Since its foundation, Freemen’s has always welcomed pupils from all backgrounds. We know an education here can provide a transformative experience to our students’ lives. However, we do not believe that these opportunities should only be open to those who can afford the fees; we feel that we have a social responsibility to do more. Through the new Freemen’s Foundation, we are committed to offering the educational opportunities to children whose family circumstances would make this opportunity unfeasible.

The School Governors have set ambitious targets: by 2022, we should like to be able to provide at least 5% of Freemen’s students, approximately 50 children, with a significant bursary, and there is commitment to grow this even more in the future.

Transforming young lives Over the last three years, the number of bursaries awarded has almost tripled, and the number of significant bursaries (80% or more of fees funded) has increased fivefold; but we still have a long way to go.

There are many more worthy children who could benefit from a Freemen’s education. None of the support for the Bursary Fund comes from fee income but from donations and Return on Investments, for which we are extremely grateful, but it is important that we grow the pot.

We have been working with local charities and cluster groups across Mole Valley, and with children’s charities more widely, to find students for both day and boarding places. It has not been difficult to find bright, capable children with a need to board through our partnership with Royal SpringBoard, and through them, Eastside Young Leaders’ Academy. We continue to explore other ways of finding the right applicants for whom we can make a tangible difference, and who will enhance our community at school and beyond.

Supporting the new Freemen’s Foundation A regular donation, no matter how large or small, can collectively truly make a difference.

Donations to the Foundation are eligible for Gift Aid and, in addition, the City of London Corporation will match donations to the Bursary Fund1, including Gift Aid, pound for pound, thereby making a gift go even further.

The City of London Corporation will match donations up to an annual limit of 2.5% of fee income per year.
