Screens various literary-themed movies and film series. Satellite branches screen films, too.

DAN COOK’S PICKS Brian Sanders’ JUNK Harbison Theatre: Oct. 18 Acrobatic physicality. Found objects; thought-provoking sets and stage design; daring contemporary dance; acrobatic physicality. This is a once-in-a-season type of show. Chamber on Main Columbia Museum of Art: Oct. 31 Yes, we’re a sucker for the music of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. And yes, it’s on this program. Cellist and series director Edward Arron has done a phenomenal job with the Chamber on Main series, maintaining the high standards set by Charles Wadsworth while gently pushing into new territory. TwoSense USC School of Music: Oct. 11 It’s a cutting-edge piano-cello duo at the always-amazing Southern Exposure series. What else do you need to know? Willie Nelson Newberry Opera House: Oct. 22 One of the towering figures of American country music plays a 409-seat theater? You can’t go wrong with that. Zombie Roving at the Fair Unbound Dance Company: Oct. 11-12, 14 Sure, the whole zombie thing is pretty played out at this point. But these are zombies at the South Carolina State Fair. How awesome is that?

The Art of Political Cartooning USC Hollings Library: Through Dec. 20 You live in South Carolina. No state offers better fodder for great political cartoons. Magna Mysteria Trinity Episcopal: Jan. 26 Upon its premiere, Free Times classical reviewer David Lowry wrote that this piece by John Fitz Rogers would one day join the ranks of important American choral works. To which I would only add that the depth, breadth and sophistication of Rogers’ vision far surpasses most of the American choral music I’ve heard. Bottom line: You owe it to yourself to hear Magna Mysteria. The Second City’s Happily Ever After Harbison Theatre: Feb. 1 When people get famous, everybody likes to say, “I saw them when ... .” To see them “when,” you have to go to shows like this. Beauty is Embarrassing Columbia Museum of Art: Sept. 13 Wayne White used to do illustrations for newspapers. Then he designed sets for Pee-wee’s Playhouse. Then he served as art director for music videos by The Smashing Pumpkins and Peter Gabriel. Now he’s a painter and sculptor. What are we trying to say? He’s done a lot more than most of us, and it’s all worth learning about. Happy Hour History Tours Historic Columbia: Ongoing Drink beer. Learn about your city. Sounds like a good combination.
