A Fredonia Timeline The Fredonia Academy opens on October 4 with 15 students. The academy enrolls 81 gentlemen and 55 ladies for the fall term. Fredonia is incorporated as a village.

The college experiences rapid growth in programs, academic departments, faculty, and students.

Maytum Hall and Michael C. Rockefeller Arts Center are constructed.
1975
Thompson Hall opens.
19761986
The college initiates programs in cooperative engineering, recombinant gene technology, and sound recording technology.
1983
Steele Hall is completed.
The academy closes, and the Fredonia Normal School opens.
1867
The Fredonia Normal School officially enrolls students in primary, junior, and academic departments.
1868
Music as a specialty area begins with the appointment of Miss Jessie Hillman to the Fredonia faculty.
1887
A tragic fire on December 14 kills six students and a janitor, destroying most of the building.
1900
1991
The Reed Library addition is completed.
The new building, Old Main (now One Temple Square senior citizen housing), is completed.
1903
1998
Enrollment exceeds 4,500 students.
2001
Lake Shore Savings Clock Tower and Carillon dedicated, and the Natatorium is completed.
2004
Juliet J. Rosch Recital Hall dedicated.
2006
University Commons completed and opened.
2007
New state-of-the-art sound recording studio and control room are dedicated, and the new lighted soccer/lacrosse field complex is dedicated and opened as University Stadium.
Fredonia is authorized to award teacher certificates in music and art.
1909
A four-year course in music is first offered.
1931
The state purchases property on Central Avenue to be used for future expansion.
1933
A four-year program in elementary education is offered.
1938
Construction begins at the new campus.
1939
Mason Hall is completed.
1941
2008
The first baccalaureate in elementary education is awarded. Fredonia is now known as Fredonia State Teachers College.
1942
2009
Technology Incubator opens.
SUNY is created. Fredonia is now one of 11 colleges of education in the SUNY system.
1948
2011
Construction begins on new Science Center; Williams Center renovation initiated.
Gregory Hall, the first dormitory/ student union building, is occupied.
1951
2012
Williams Center and Maytum Hall renovations completed; construction continues on new Science Center.
Fenton Hall is completed.
1953
Alumni Hall becomes the second dormitory building on campus.
1958
McGinnies dormitory and the first Mason Hall addition are completed.
1961
I.M. Pei and Partners develops the master plan for a new campus.
1962
Dods, Nixon, Chautauqua, and Jewett halls are completed.
1963
Groundbreaking for Williams (Campus) Center.
1968
The Carnahan-Jackson Center for Scholarship and Learning is dedicated. Groundbreaking is held for university’s Technology Incubator.
New Blue Devil Fitness Center opens.
2013
Construction continues on Science Center; construction begins on University Village Townhouses.
2014
Science Center and University Village Townhouses open; construction begins on addition to Rockefeller Arts Center.
2015
Fredonia earns the Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
2016
Rockefeller Arts Center Studio Complex dedicated.

About Our Guest Speaker Dr. Thomas J. Quatroche Jr., ’92, from Western New York, is President and CEO of Erie County Medical Center (ECMC). Dr. Quatroche earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from SUNY Fredonia, a master’s degree in Student Personnel Administration from SUNY Buffalo State College and doctoral degree in Higher Education – Educational Leadership and Policy from the State University of New York at Buffalo. For over 20 years, Dr. Quatroche has held executive positions in higher education and healthcare and has been part of the ECMC family for 17 years. On Jan. 26, 2016, the Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC) Board of Directors appointed him as Chief Executive Officer and President. Prior to becoming President and CEO, Dr. Quatroche served as President at ECMC where he was responsible for all Surgical Services, Orthopaedics, Oncology, Head & Neck/Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Bariatrics, and Oral Oncology Maxillofacial Prosthetics, as well as marketing, strategic planning and the development of new business. Dr. Quatroche is a past recipient of Buffalo Business First’s C-Level Executive Award, received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Fredonia Alumni Association, the Barry and Deanna Snyder Chairman’s Award from Seneca Diabetes Foundation and the SUNY Buffalo State College Distinguished Alumni Award. He currently serves on the Statewide Executive Committee for the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) as Immediate Past Chairman and is also a past chair of the Healthcare Association of Western and Central New York, Inc. Dr. Quatroche is a member of the Board of Directors of America’s Essential Hospitals, the Washington, D.C.-based organization representing the nation’s public hospitals. In addition, he is a former board member of the Trocaire College Board of Trustees, SUNY Buffalo State College Foundation Board and Buffalo Renaissance Foundation Board of Directors. During his career, Dr. Quatroche has served on statewide committees in education for the State University of New York and has recently served as a representative on Governor Andrew Cuomo’s state-wide Medicaid Task Force. He was also recently recognized in the New York publication, City & State’s 2021 Health Power 100.

Undergraduate students who have attained high scholastic achievement are eligible to graduate with honors, which are indicated to the right of the student’s major. Students graduating Cum Laude (C) have a final cumulative quality point average of 3.30 to 3.49; Magna Cum Laude (M), 3.50 through 3.69; and Summa Cum Laude (S), 3.70 or higher. For students graduating in May, August and December of this year, a preliminary determination was made considering the student’s most recent QPA. A final determination is made following the degree audit and is reflected on the student’s diploma. Through a gift from the Fredonia Alumni Association, Latin honors graduates wear a symbolic gold cord with their academic gown. The Lanford Presidential Prize From the Oscar and Esther Lanford Endowment The Lanford Presidential Prize from the Oscar and Esther Lanford Endowment of the Fredonia College Foundation is presented at this year’s Commencement to a member of the graduating class who has demonstrated balanced achievement. Criteria for selection include a high degree of personal honesty and integrity, substantial intellectual growth and achievement during university years, a minimum grade point average of 3.50, and exemplary service to Fredonia, including active participation in more than one area of university life. To the Fredonia Graduating Class of 2021: Living through a pandemic is likely not how you expected to finish your last semesters at Fredonia, nor how you expected to start your life after college. Major milestone celebrations over the 13 months have been postponed, cancelled, or modified, including commencements. I know this is not the ideal outcome after years of hard work and studying, but this does not diminish your tremendous accomplishment. Despite all the challenges thrown at you and having your senior year of college unceremoniously turned upside-down, you persevered to earn your degree. Although we were not able to celebrate your graduation with all the normal pomp and circumstance it so rightfully deserves, let it be known that we are all so proud of the Class of 2021—the persistence, determination, and grit you have shown to complete your studies amidst a number of obstacles is exemplary. As you look toward the future, know your SUNY education has prepared you to succeed in whatever you put your mind to—whether it be furthering your education or joining the workforce. The 2021 Blue Devils will continue the SUNY legacy of changing the world no matter where you go, and I look forward to seeing all that you accomplish.
