Dr. Roger Firestien has presented programs on innovation to over 600 organizations around the world including: fortune 500 corporations, government agencies, universities, associations, hospitals and religious institutions.

His expert views on creativity have been covered in Fast Company, Forbes, Investor’s Business Daily, INC and The New York Times.

Roger’s nine-part series on innovation is on the Open-Sesame e-learning platform.

Dr. Firestien has written seven books and hundreds of articles on the creative process.

His books include Why didn’t I think of that? and Create in a Flash. His latest book is Solve the REAL Problem. It was released as an audiobook in November of 2024.

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AWARD SPONSORED

BY DONALD NASCA The Undergraduate Student Research Award, sponsored by Dr. Donald Nelson Nasca, supports undergraduate student research and creativity at the State University of New York at Fredonia. The goal of the award is to promote excellence in student research and creativity and to enhance the dissemination of that work. Through an endowment, Dr. Nasca has provided funding to support student research projects at SUNY Fredonia. Applications are accepted each Spring semester and the award supports at least two student projects.

Dr. Donald Nelson-Nasca was an educator, scholar, writer, and mentor who was passionate about science, research, and people. He grew up in Laona, NY and graduated from Fredonia High School (‘50) and The State University of New York at Fredonia (‘54, Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education). He later earned his Masters in Science at Cornell University and his doctorate from the University at Buffalo ('65, Education, Ed.D.).

2024-2025 RECIPIENTS Students: Declan Whitmore and Madison Winfield Mentor: Dr. Bridget Russell, CCC-SLP; Communication Disorders & Sciences Project Title: Cough, Facial Strengthening, and Vocal Health in Parkinson’s Disease Project Summary: This study aims to understand whether EMST and smTAP treatments not only improve cough strength and vocal health but also contribute to improvements in lip and tongue strength. We will use the IOPI Pro to measure lip and tongue strength pre- and post-treatment, expanding previous research.

This study contributes to the field of speech-language pathology by providing new information about the efficiency of treatment options for cough strengthening in patients with Parkinson’s Disease. Findings will allow clinicians to make evidence-based treatment decisions. Additionally, this study will explore whether these treatments inadvertently strengthen lip and tongue musculature, which could have significant implications for dysphagia treatment and overall oral motor function in Parkinson’s Disease patients.

The SUNY Undergraduate Research Conference (SURC) is a multidisciplinary spring semester event. SURC brings together undergraduate students and faculty mentors from across the SUNY system for a full day of activities, including sessions devoted to student presentations (oral, performance, artistic displays, and poster), luncheon, keynote speakers, a SUNY Graduate School and Career Fair, and professional development workshops for students and faculty.

Start: 2:15 PM Type: FREDx Talks Presenter(s): Rachel Echevarria Mentor(s): Karry Kazial Title: Bat Behavioral Response to Avian Predators & Expansion of Acoustic Surveying for Bat Activity and Species Richness Abstract: species richness. This knowledge is crucial for understanding the biodiversity and ecological health of new sites. Our objective was also to determine bat response to avian predators through playback in the field and lab. Bat survey methods included six markers placed 100 meters apart at 2 sites (Penn Dixie Fossil Park and Nature Preserve & The Nature Sanctuary Society of Western New York Alexander Preserve). Three surveys were conducted at each site before playback trials to determine presence of bats. Surveys were performed 30 min after sunset and lasted 60 min, with 10 min of recording at each marker. Four playback trials were conducted in pseudorandom order in the field and lab. Bat response data included recording bat calls in the field and lab with additional behavioral measures observed during lab trials.

Start: 2:15 PM Type: Oral Presentation Presenter(s): Jay Rosenberg Mentor(s): Margaret Urban; Jason Dilworth Title: Piper's Pantry: Creating Universal Design Abstract: Piper’s Pantry is a research-driven project exploring the possibilities of universal design and accessibility.

The current ADA standards on which universal design is based are from 2010. In the past 15 years, progress towards accessibility has been moving at too slow of a pace. If companies and designers only focus on hitting the minimum requirements, how can we progress? Through my research, I’ve discovered four driving principles informing universal design: engaging imagery, diverse packaging, clear messaging, and an easily navigable setting. Set within the context of a supermarket, Piper’s Pantry delves into brand, packaging, and product design with a focus on being disabilityfriendly.

Start: 2:15 PM Type: Oral Presentation Presenter(s): Luke Villavicencio Mentor(s): Rob Deemer; Luis Felipe Vargas Magdaleno de Moraes Title: Static Bending & "Hollow" for Two Guitars Abstract: Guitarists, no matter their style of background, have a tendency to experiment with pitches beyond the twelve, equidistant tones that their frets seemingly restrain them to. Rock and jazz styles use frequent bending to tug at the heartstrings, and country and folk use slides to break free from temperament. The recent development of new microtonal fretboards from guitarist Tolgahan Çoğulu as well as the growing fan and player base for fretless guitar shows that this concept of escaping the frets, as they are, is still ever present in guitar music today. To add to this palette of extended techniques, I bring forth static bending: a method by which one bends a note before activating it and then holding the bend after the activation. This effectively avoids the portamento effect of standard bending. By doing this, a composer can create many microtonal melodies, scales, and harmonies. This technique is demonstrated in my classical guitar duet, “Hollow.”

This album is composed of 10 different tracks. Each student will contribute with a multimedia track that combines a soundscape and a poem. Each track relates to the importance or methods of peacemaking and conflict resolution in literature with an emphasis on the impact of armed conflict on the environment. Examples consist of habitat destruction from war and resource extraction and peace building in communities. One portion of the performance will be pre-recorded within the soundscape, while others will read their poems live with a soundscape backing. Each poem is created with references from various texts and resources that are inspired by the topic of peacemaking and conflict resolution.

2:15-2:45: ART EXHIBITS, AND FILM FEST - MPR Start: 2:15 PM Type: Artwork Exhibit Presenter(s): Emily McKevitt Mentor(s): Quintin Gleim Title: Dark Spells Abstract: "Dark Spells" is a collection to showcase my love for all things fantasy. From strange and unsettling creatures to mystical and mysterious environments, this collection offers a small deep dive into the world of the unknown.

Start: 2:15 PM Type: Artwork Exhibit Presenter(s): Maya Kulick Mentor(s): Abbey Paccia Title: Puppets Abstract: I created detailed puppet characters that can be viewed through installation or time-based media and that feature whimsical escapism with an underlying feeling of cynicism. The goal was to reimagine people and scenarios into more pleasant and humorous forms by bending the bleaker aspects of reality to evoke joy. To create my puppets, I sculpted a detailed figure for the face and other smaller parts of the body using clay. I used that clay figure to create a silicone mold into which I poured foam latex cast into it. Thus a detailed positive of the face or other part was created. These foam latex pieces were then used with high density foam, fabric, and assorted mixed media to finish the puppet. Through the kinetic nature of the creations and details sculpted into the face, these puppets bring a feeling of life to an otherwise inanimate object.

Made from a variety of materials, this book is a collage of many of the techniques I have learned over the past four years in the Animation/Illustration program here at Fredonia.

Start: 2:15 PM Type: Artwork Exhibit Presenter(s): Elizabeth Conrad Mentor(s): Quintin Gleim Title: She Watches in Strange Ways Abstract: This comic is an illustration of a scenario me and my friend had talked about involving our characters. A guest has brought an evil into our protagonist’s home, and they must dispose of it before their secrets are unveiled. Usually, my comics stay in my lined notebook and don’t really ever leave, but I took this one into my drawing program to see what I could do with it. It ended up being a pretty experimental piece and I played around with colors and composition, and ways I can get a story across while breaking the traditional comic format.

2:15-2:45: ART EXHIBITS, AND FILM FEST - MPR Start: 2:15 PM Type: Artwork Exhibit Presenter(s): Jocelyn Seib Mentor(s): Quintin Gleim Title: The Empress Abstract: This illustration was developed for a collaborative student gallery exhibition called "Myths and Magics Tarot," focused on students' interpretations of each of the Major Arcana tarot cards with a mythical and/or magical lens applied to each concept. Hear a walk-through of the drawing process, discussion of behind the scenes research that went into the development of my illustration, and a reflection on the collaborative elements of putting together a student gallery. View this window into the often unseen aspects of the creative process.

Start: 2:15 PM Type: Artwork Exhibit Presenter(s): Julian Santos Mentor(s): Quintin Gleim Title: Wattson, Apex Legends Abstract: This is a fantasy illustration based on a character from the game "Apex Legends" and her name is Wattson. I had a lot of fun playing this game for a long time, so I wanted to make an illustration for my favorite character while still creating work for my fantasy illustration portfolio.

Start: 2:15 PM Type: Film Fest Presenter(s): Luke Johnson Mentor(s): Abbey Paccia Title: Animated Films by Luke Johnson Abstract: What I would show in my presentation is eight short animated films, all of which I created while I have been attending Fredonia. Three of them are films that I have created for classes. "Kindness is blind panthers" is a short film that I created for my final for Intro to 2D Animation with Abbey Paccia. As well as "Abstractions, the lake" which I created for my final for Intermediate Animation. And my most recent animation created for college, "There's something starving in the sky" which I made for an independent study in animation and illustration with Abbey Paccia. The other five films were all made in my free time, using the skills I learned in the before mentioned classes and other art classes. All of these films together, with title cards and credits, will be just under nine minutes.

Start: 2:15 PM Type: Film Fest Presenter(s): James Gibbons Mentor(s): Abbey Paccia Title: Winter in the Tropics Abstract: In this stop-motion short, it follows the shenanigans between two monkeys on the beach together. The big monkey tries to collect coconuts to eat but the little monkey wants to have his share as well, without the big monkey knowing. This final project for an intro to animation course utilizes the many techniques of animation to tell a fun story.

Start: 2:15 PM Type: Film Fest Presenter(s): Emily Neiswonger Mentor(s): Abbey Paccia Title: The Value of Cinematography Abstract: My chosen short films are projects that I have created over the past couple of years. Spanning from commercial work to personal projects, cinematography is the secret behind transforming the ordinary into something beautiful. Each film stands alone, ranging from genres such as documentary, advertising, and experimental; However, they are unified by the power of strong visual imagery to enhance storytelling.

2:15-2:45: RESEARCH POSTERS - MPR Start: 2:15 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): Abigail Shine Mentor(s): Hyun Jung Kang Title: Exploratory Action Research for Optimizing Children's Engagement in Music Therapy in an Inclusive Preschool Setting Abstract: This Exploratory Action Research (EAR) was implemented in a music therapy practice for children in an inclusive preschool setting in Western New York. It aimed to explore strategies and interventions to optimize the preschoolers' engagement in the process of music therapy. The music therapy was conducted by two researchers, a graduate student music therapist and a clinical supervisor, once a week for 12 weeks (February to May 2025) with each group session lasting 20-25 minutes. 8 children with diverse needs, characteristics, and musical preferences were assigned to small groups for music therapy. The research continued the cyclical process of plan, act, and reflection. Data from the application plans, post-session notes, and supervision notes were analyzed and interpreted with a focus on how the small groups were assigned and the interventions were planned. The analysis explored which factors and considerations were effective in facilitating preschoolers' engagement.

Start: 2:15 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): Molly Sheehan Mentor(s): Megan Johnson Title: Decoding Crime: A Data-Driven Investigation of Criminal Patterns in Los Angeles Abstract: Does a love of math correlate with a love of true crime? In this paper—it does! Inspired by a love of true crime shows, we sought to investigate trends in criminal activity, in an attempt to predict future crime patterns. This research was initiated as part of an honors thesis course, focusing on criminal activity reported in Los Angeles between 20202023. Utilizing a comprehensive public dataset composed of various types of crime, this project aims to identify key features correlated with the solvability of criminal cases. Based on analysis in R, findings suggest a significant relationship between when a crime occurs and its solvability, as well as other variables such as location, victim characteristics, severity, crime type, and length of time until report. By using data analytics, this project contributes to a deeper understanding of crime, providing insights that law enforcement can use to enhance solvability strategies in Los Angeles and beyond.

Start: 2:15 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): Molly Sheehan Mentor(s): H Straight Title: Extending the Negative Binomial: Generalizations and Applications Abstract: How many kids should a sports-loving couple expect to have until they reach a football team of 7 boys and a basketball team of 5 girls? This problem regarding family planning naturally lends itself to an exploration of the negative binomial distribution, where a certain number of success criteria must be met before stopping. Through the use of research, as well as R programming language, we explore both this problem and the negative binomial distribution in more depth to uncover how their ideas can be applicable in a wide range of various real-world disciplines. This research poster will include all of the findings from this in-depth analysis.

Start: 2:15 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): Amanda Roth Mentor(s): W Lee Title: Testing Filter Effectiveness In Honduran Drinking Water Abstract: Filters were distributed to homes to provide clean drinking water. The water delivered to their homes is not suitable for drinking, and the filters are designed to remove bacteria and other harmful contaminants in the water. To test the effectiveness of the filters, samples from pre-filtration and post-filtration were used to identify bacteria present.

The bacteria in post-filtration suggests that the filters are not working as they should be. The bacteria present in the filtered samples pose negative health effects to those living in these rural villages. Bacteria found in the drinking water of pre-filtration and post-filtration samples are to be identified.

Start: 2:15 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): Brodie Loftus Mentor(s): Mojtaba Seyedian Title: Inflation and Economic Performance: The Federal Reserve’s Role Abstract: This study explores how the Federal Reserve’s control over the U.S. money supply drives inflation, shaping economic performance metrics like GDP, unemployment, and interest rates. The thesis argues that the Fed’s deficit monetization fuels inflationary trends. Using historical data—U.S. inflation hitting 13.5% in 1980 and the Fed’s balance sheet doubling from $4 trillion to $8 trillion (2020-2022)—and cross-national policy comparisons, findings show moderate inflation boosts growth, but excessive levels, linked to the Fed’s post-1907 mandate, erode purchasing power and favor debtors over savers. High inflation, like 11.1% in 1974, also sows uncertainty. Solutions include halting deficit monetization for market-driven bond pricing and enhancing Fed autonomy. This research re-frames inflation as a policy choice, urging monetary discipline for stability. Pending co-author and SUNY mentor approval, it offers insights for economic management.

Start: 2:15 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): Gianna Catanzaro Mentor(s): Karry Kazial; Todd Backes Title: The Importance of Large Animal Medicine Abstract: Large animal medicine is essential to maintaining the health and welfare of livestock, equine, and farm animals, directly impacting public health, food security, and agricultural sustainability. Large animal veterinarians diagnose and treat diseases, implement preventive care strategies, and ensure humane animal management. Their work also helps control zoonotic diseases, which are extremely dangerous and even deadly to humans. Additionally, they contribute to food safety by monitoring livestock health and ensuring the quality of meat, milk, and other animal products. However, the growing shortage of large animal veterinarians threatens these essential services, particularly in rural areas where access to care is limited.

Through my internship with Dr. Katie Ball, a local large animal veterinarian, I gained firsthand experience in the challenges and rewards of this profession. Three junior students, thirteen freshmen, and a professor will work together to construct musical instruments using recycled materials and engage in group improvisation using the instruments. Qualitative data will be collected from participants’ verbal reflections, focusing on their experiences and shifts in environmental awareness. The findings will offer insights into how music-making with recycled instruments can serve as a meaningful practice for promoting ecological awareness and sustainable action.

In fact by 2060, the Hispanic population is projected to make up a quarter of the nation’s population (US Census), as a result, we are observing a sharp increase of Latino/a/e student enrollment and advanced degree attainment. Yet, despite this growing population trend, many higher education institutions remain ill equipped to serve Latino/a/e students. This research project aims to enhance discussion of how cultural competence of Latino heritage can be enhanced to best deal with students of these demographics. This includes a discussion of the importance of correct name pronunciation/accentuation, the representation of role models in positions of leadership, and the creation of Hispanic-serving spaces. All these strategies will ensure that higher institutions meet their expectations of fostering a culturally competent environment for the constantly growing Latino/a/e population.

Mobile phone dependence has been shown to cause significant negative effects on studying, work, and life (Liu et al., 2024). This project looks to explore the effects of digital distractions on attention and affective forecasting–estimations of future emotional reactions (Jala Rizeq, 2024). College students at SUNY Fredonia responded to survey questions relating to academics and digital distractions. In Study 1, we analyzed the effects of time management and preferred social media platforms on affective forecasting, as measured by how students felt about a future exam/assignment. On affective forecasting, the effects of time management and preferred social media platforms were analyzed. In Study 2, the impacts of short form videos and screen time on GPA were measured and analyzed with a regression analysis.

Abstract: This study will use a factorial ANOVA to look at the relationship between a student’s family structure, their minimum acceptable GPA given two hypothetical course loads (high vs low course load), and the student’s satisfaction with their current overall GPA. It is hypothesized that students who come from families with multiple parental figures and/or higher perceived minimum acceptable GPA will be less satisfied with their current GPA when compared to participants from single parental figure homes and/or who have lower perceived minimum acceptable GPA. It is also hypothesized that there will be a significant interaction between family structure and perceived minimum acceptable GPA. The data for this study will be collected via an anonymous online survey of undergraduate students.

During oogenesis, grk and vasa genes play crucial roles in the formation of anterior-posterior and dorsal-ventral axes of the oocyte. We analyzed the impacts of mutations in the grk gene on the fate of these axes. A critical factor in this process rests with how grk is translated via either a cap-dependent or IRES-mediated pathway. To test this hypothesis, grk mutations were made in the 5’ untranslated region (UTR), where the IRES is hypothesized to exist. While cap-dependent grk translation is well studied, the process of IRES translation of grk is currently under investigation. We predict that an IRES mediates the translation of grk when cap-dependent/vasa-dependent translation is compromised. We tested grk mutants in wild type and mutant vas backgrounds under conditions that favor cap or IRES-dependent translation to shed light on this novel process.

Abstract: This study examines the relationship of the different categories of social media and sleep quality perceived on predicted academic achievement among SUNY Fredonia college students. We examine how the Sleep Quality Scale (SQS) and categories of social media (photo sharing, short term video, discussion forums) influence the predicted academic achievement (gpa). It is hypothesized that people with a higher SQS score with lower social media use will have higher predicted grade point averages, than participants who spend time watching short videos on social media and obtain lower amounts of sleep per night. Our second analysis explores how studying is related to self efficacy and a person's introversion/extroversion level will correlate with studying. It is expected that people who have a higher self efficacy and a higher extraversion score will have an increased amount of time studying.

Specifically, we explored how personality and key relationship dynamics predict the extent of sexual fantasy disclosure. This study (N = 336) showed that greater levels of sexual fantasy disclosure were associated with higher levels of relationship satisfaction, sexual satisfaction. Furthermore, higher levels of agreeableness, partner responsiveness, sexual communication, relationship investment, and having a smaller partnered orgasm gap were linked to higher levels of sexual fantasy disclosure. Lower levels of avoidant attachment and rejection sensitivity were associated with higher levels of fantasy disclosure. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the factors that influence when and how individuals share their sexual fantasies. By identifying key predictors of sexual fantasy disclosure, this study has important implications for relationship counseling and therapy, highlighting the need to address communication patterns and satisfaction levels to enhance intimacy.

This study explores findings on the prevalence of MPA in college musicians, its manifestations (mental, emotional, and/or physical), and examines the efficacy of matching specific anxiety-reducing tools to those manifestations. Using validated self-report measures (KMPAI and HSP Test) and qualitative reflection questions, we assessed how MPA was experienced by 24 collegiate musicians at SUNY Fredonia. After the initial assessment, students were asked to engage in strategies drawn from Dr. Avni’s The Musician’s Toolkit. Preliminary results indicate that individualized intervention matching leads to more effective anxiety reduction. By identifying patterns in MPA expression and aligning them with appropriate coping mechanisms, this research provides insight into optimizing intervention strategies for musicians. These findings have implications for music educators of students of all ages. Limitations of the current study are discussed.

Largely unknown, print advertisements were used to sell songs in the book of other songs - using printed scores, listing the publisher’s stock, and more. Analyzing these different methods, one can explore the history of American popular music advertisement through its design trends. This presentation analyzes print advertising in popular sheet music, ranging from 1880 through 1940. By studying ads we can gather conclusions on the demographics of the purchasing audience, musical literacy, and assumed familiarity with the repertory. In addition, ads promoting nonmusical items shed light on the age, gender and race of the consumer. My presentation brings aspects of the popular sheet music business into a musicological light by analyzing data of the various methods used to advertise and giving a new angle on the early twentieth-century audience.

Unlike the US’ racially polarized socio-political landscape created through complex historical legal exclusions, the Dominican Republic’s mixed population made the classification of individuals redundant. Despite these differences, anti-Blackness and colorism run deeply through Dominican society. Using a critical social justice lens, my research explores the manifestations of anti-Blackness in Dominican culture and the intersectional implications for Dominicans who migrate to the US, who must navigate the complexities of identity politics and institutional power in stark contrast to that of their home country.

It is also the project that helped me fully understand my design process. Design and research work hand in hand, so designing the branding required defining a problem and gathering data through research. The brainstorming process involved writing down associations with climbing, examining the values of rope climbing, and deciding on clean designs that would appeal to that audience. Animals associated with climbing, such as mountain goats and monkeys, were used in some logos. The color green and the recycling symbol would associate the brand with being eco-friendly. After dozens of versions, I arrived at these logos, my solutions to this problem.

In this world, machinery, innovation, trade, and good bread are the key to a happy civilization. The Sugar Hatchet itself is a small restaurant in the town of Locksngear, known for producing the best baked goods for trading across the world.

Two coworkers, Charlie and Connor, take their job at the Sugar Hatchet very seriously. So, when they are robbed in broad daylight, the two setoff on a high speed chase across the city to save a patron's bread, and ultimately the whole town. The animation shown in this exhibit are small bits of animation I've done for this project during my Capstone class this semester.

Abstract: This paper employs Lloyd Bitzer’s Rhetorical Situation Theory to analyze the political cartoon “Access to mental health care. Guns!! Come right in” created by Nick Anderson. The cartoon exhibits a man presented with two options: the first is access to mental health care services, represented by a seemingly unreachable staircase and the second is a gun store depicted as highly accessible with open doors. This visual serves as a rhetorical act that visualizes the exigence, that is the imbalance between obtaining mental health care and accessibility to acquire firearms. By analyzing the rhetorical audience, the artistic and inartistic constraints that affect how individuals understand the message can be discovered. Finally, Bitzer's concept of a fitting response is applied to determine if the rhetorical act was effective and appropriate for the situation and communicates the message the way it was intended.

Abstract: Many plankton species can be used to monitor water quality. In the Fredonia Reservoir, only phytoplankton samples have been used for this purpose and a baseline of zooplankton abundance has not been established. A baseline for the presence of indicator zooplankton is essential for monitoring future changes in abundance. This paper documents the diversity of littoral zooplankton sampled from the reservoir. From samples taken on September 9th and 15th 2024, 3660 zooplankton were sorted into categories: classes Insecta, Arachnida, Copepoda, and Malacostra, orders Ctenopoda and Anomopoda, ephippia, and non-arthropods. In both samples, order Anomopoda made up the highest percentage (40.7% and 70.5% respectively). The Shannon Diversity Indices were compared using a Hutcheson t-test. The September 9th sample was significantly more diverse. 31 representative crustaceans were photographed under a scanning electron microscope. Nine species were identified, including Hyalella azteca and Sida crystallina, both known water quality indicators.

Abstract: Hair cells in the zebrafish (Danio rerio) are responsible for sensing changes in the surrounding environment.

These hair cells are found in neuromasts along the lateral line and are able to regenerate as needed. To test the hypothesis that Lgr6 is important in neuromast formation, function or regeneration, our lab created a transgenic zebrafish to label lgr6-expressing cells with red fluorescent protein (RFP). The goal of this project is to verify the location of RFP insertion within the lgr6 gene and characterize the RFP expression pattern in these zebrafish. After unsuccessful attempts with traditional PCR using primers flanking the putative insertion site, we are attempting to validate the location of the RFP insert using inverse PCR. Preliminary confocal imaging of 3 to 5 day old fish suggests RFP expression in a region of the hindbrain and in a punctate pattern along the trunk.

3:00-3:30: RESEARCH POSTERS - MPR Start: 3:00 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): Max Higbee Mentor(s): Scott Ferguson Title: Investigating the Role of Barentsz (Btz) in gurken (grk) mRNA Translation and Localization in Drosophila melanogaster Abstract: During Drosophila melanogaster oogenesis, the establishment of the dorsal-ventral axis is dependent on gurken (grk) mRNA localization. The Exon Junction Complex protein Barentsz (Btz) is involved in transport of oskar mRNA, but its role in grk translation remains unclear. Previously, btz mutants were shown to suppress the spindle-B (spn-BBU) mutant phenotype, suggesting a potential interaction between btz and grk. Using genetic crosses, RFLP analysis, and nanopore sequencing, we confirmed the successful removal of spn-BBU while retaining btz mutations to investigate the role of Btz independently of spnB. Additionally, germline clones were generated using the dominant female sterile technique to analyze the effects of btz mutations in the germline, despite their recessive lethality. Our results provide a foundation for understanding how Btz may regulate grk. Further studies will help elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying grk mRNA regulation and its impact on Dorsal/Ventral axis formation in Drosophila development.

Biofouling, the buildup of marine organisms on submerged structures, challenges aquatic industries, as existing adhesives are often inefficient underwater or contain toxic chemicals. Mefp-3, a mussel adhesive protein found in M. edulis byssal threads, offers a promising, non-toxic alternative due to its strong underwater attachment properties. To address low-purity yields from natural extraction methods, this study employs recombinant techniques. Mefp-3 DNA will be amplified via PCR, cloned into plasmid vectors (pACYC-Tyr-438 and pET-mfp-3), and expressed in E. coli BL21 (DE3) with IPTG induction. Affinity chromatography will purify the protein, with SDS-PAGE and mass spectrometry confirming its identity and purity. By isolating mefp-3, this study seeks to advance bio-inspired adhesive development to combat biofouling effectively and sustainably.

In study 1, we explore how attention control is affected by residence and stress (high, medium, or low). In Study 2, we explore the correlations between academic performance and attention control, quality of sleep, and stress. Stress was manipulated with one of three videos with varying levels of stress-inducing content.

A factorial ANOVA examines how stress level (high vs. low) and engagement with career services influence scores on the Perceived Future Employability Scale (PFES). It is hypothesized that participants experiencing a high-stress interview condition will report lower perceived employability, while those who frequently use career services will report higher employability. Additionally, our regression analysis explores how perceived stress is related to procrastination and academic workload. It is expected that higher procrastination and greater academic workload will correlate with increased stress levels. This study aims to provide insight into how stress, career preparation, and academic factors shape students’ confidence in their current academics and future employment prospects. Within two studies we hypothesize that greater body image flexibility will reduce the effects of social media exposure and question framing on body image perceptions. Abstract: In this paper, I attempt to prove that the same force driving low employment rates in East Asia also affects fertility rates. Most of similar past research done in the past focus on fertility intentions and actualization, utilizing cross-sectional survey data to analyze the difference between fertility intentions. I utilize a longitudinal dataset which includes total fertility rates and select economic indicators, then build an exponential regression model to gain insight into which indicators are effective predictors for birth rates. Upon building the model to estimate fertility rates, I test the effectiveness of natalist policies both in the extensive and intensive perspective by utilizing a difference-in-difference methodology, using the independent variables from the regression as covariates to estimate the fertility trends. I also test the timing of the model by applying different tempos for certain variables, to also develop an understanding as to when economic conditions affect individual decision making.

3:45-4:15: RESEARCH POSTERS - MPR Start: 3:45 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): Delanie Tunstall Mentor(s): W Lee Title: Testing the Effectiveness of Sawyer and Filters of Hope Household Water Filters in Rural Honduras Abstract: Rural Hondurans often do not have access to clean water. A simple and cost-effective solution is hollow fiber membrane filters, from brands such as Sawyer and Filters of Hope. To ensure that Hondurans are receiving the best filters and clean water, testing these two brands of filters has become crucial to determine which should be distributed within communities. Used filters of these two brands were randomly collected from Honduras and brought to Fredonia for testing. They were then challenged with E. coli to determine their efficiency. The Filters of Hope showed a high failure rate, with 68% of filters allowing for bacterial passage (13/19), and Sawyer filters showed a 7% failure rate (1/15). Since this discovery, organizations distributing filters to rural Honduran homes have switched solely to Sawyer filters. This study has implications for the health of Honduran people and allows for informed filter selection.

A previous study on butterflies showed the persistence of personalities in individuals across metamorphosis. The goal of our research is to observe if personalities are present among individuals of Zophobas morio, the darkling beetle, both within life-history stages and across metamorphosis. Z. morio are undergoing three trials for each of three different behavioral contexts. The situations observed in these three experiments include exploration, gregariousness, and food neophobia. Individuals are undergoing these trials as larvae, and will be allowed to metamorphose, and undergo the same experiments again as adults. While a lot of larval stage data has been collected, data collection and analysis is still in progress and we are waiting for test subjects to metamorphose to collect data on adults. This research could provide insights into the behavior, ecology and evolution of holometabolous (fully metamorphosing) insects.

Start: 3:45 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): Jonas Simora Mentor(s): Allan Jay Cardenas Title: Fine-tuning Graphene Systems for Hydrogen Storage Abstract: Interest surrounding carbon sorbent materials, such as graphene, as a medium for solid-state hydrogen (H2) storage has grown in recent years as the United States looks to transition toward green energy. One of the methods, which would allow for stable H2 storage at ambient temperatures involves doping of these materials with nitrogen. As an intern at PNNL I was assigned the task of fine tuning the electronic properties of graphene systems through doping with nitrogen (N) atoms for the purposes of increasing the efficiency of hydrogen storage. This fine tuning involves the simulation of graphitic and pyridinic N defects on both planar and rippled graphene systems. I had the task of simulating the rippled graphene systems for this purpose, looking at multiple doping configurations, which display the variance of curvature within this system. We were able to determine the relative stability of these defects by calculating the formation energy of each defect being modeled.

We collected qualitative and quantitative data by conducting online surveys and a couple interviews with exclusively SUNY Fredonia students. We found results on what characteristics are most important in online friendships, what types of games friends typically play together, and number and quality of friendships.

It examines how historical racial prejudices have shaped contemporary immigration laws, starting with the Chinese Exclusion Act and various Immigration and Nationality Acts, leading to the post-9/11 targeting of Muslim communities and the creation of the "war on terror." My research highlights how immigration laws continually perpetuate historically rooted inequality and discrimination, which complicates the framing and usage of the "war on terror." The presentation demonstrates the socio-political consequences of these policies and how they reinforce racialized power structures and contribute to broader patterns of systemic oppression. Through analysis, the presentation aims to bring attention to the hardships faced by immigrant communities and the necessity of shifting laws to combat racial biases and promote greater justice and inclusion for underrepresented groups in the United States.

3:45-4:15: RESEARCH POSTERS - MPR Start: 3:45 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): Christopher Bacon Mentor(s): H Straight Title: Change in Temperature Over Time Abstract: Using a dataset from Australia giving the date and time for a fixed location daily for ten years, we seek to determine if the temperature at that point is increasing over time, or if temperature change can be explained by natural temperature fluctuations (El-Nino, yearly change, et cetera). To do this we need to determine natural fluctuations and then determine equivalent daily temperatures after removing these known effects. The remaining change is what can be attributed to global climate change, and basic hypothesis testing will determine if these values are statistically significant.

Abstract: The Corditape archaeological site is situated in Oneida County, close to Rome, New York, along a significant tributary of the Upper Mohawk River. It is a Paleoindian (12.9 to 11.6 cal ka years before present) encampment and it is unique because of its size and single component nature. This poster reports on the results of a pilot study to determine if soil geochemistry can identify the spatial range of caribou slaughtering operations suggested by artifacts recovered at Corditaipe. Our specific goal is to ascertain whether it is feasible to use geochemistry to pinpoint areas of ancient activity at precontact archaeology sites. Experimental results indicate that the soil geochemistry is significantly different between the hypothesized caribou slaughtering area and non-site samples at Corditaipe. We think this suggests a strong possibility that geochemical analysis and multivariate statistics could identify areas of previous activity, even at older sites.

Plasmids are small circular DNA molecules engineered to contain specific sequences. In mammalian cells they can be used for many purposes including transferring new genes, increasing or decreasing gene expression, silencing genes, or fluorescently labeling proteins. We are using the shRNA-encoding plasmid pLKO.1-puro plasmid with sequences to knock down the NUMA1 gene. This plasmid contains a puromycin resistance gene that can be used as a selectable marker: only cells with the plasmid will survive when treated with the antibiotic puromycin. After treating cells with varying concentrations of puromycin, cells were scored for viability by either cell counting or flow cytometry. In addition, cells were stained with SiR-DNA and transfected with plasmids to centrosomal proteins to observe cellular structures using confocal microscopy.

In a pilot study (N = 40), we conducted qualitative analyses on participants’ self-reported reactions to a potential breakup, using their responses to develop tactic options for the primary study. In the primary study (N = 210), we examined predictors of tactic use, such as the context of the breakup conversation. An Exploratory Factor Analysis identified five distinct tactics: manipulation, affection, desperation, discussion, and cognitive appeals. Although tactic use did not vary by breakup context, certain personality traits—such as higher narcissism, greater attachment anxiety, and lower attachment avoidance—as well as demographic factors, were associated with increased overall tactic use. Additionally, specific predictors of the likelihood of specific tactics use were found; for example, women were more likely to use manipulation than men.

In two online survey studies with undergraduate students at SUNY Fredonia, we explore associations between these academic variables and multiple predictors. In study 1 we hypothesize that students who are more self-conscious of their drinking habits and have higher levels of alcohol consumption will have lower ASE. In study 2, we hypothesize that caffeine intake and anxiety will interact and moderate the relationship between ASE and academic performance. Self-consciousness about drinking will be manipulated with three levels of increasing specificity of questions about drinking. Results will be discussed with a focus on ongoing efforts to increase overall student performance and decrease negative substance use habits.

Through the work of scholars whose research demonstrates using a social justice framework for therapy helps the reduction of mental health problems associated with violence. I would like to contribute to further the development of research in this field. The research seeks to implement more inclusive preventative programs in marginalized communities, across the gender spectrum. This will assist me in my own goals for my career of becoming a clinical psychologist. This will help serve communities that have experienced different forms of systemic oppression and marginalization, including the LGBTA+ community and people with disabilities.

Given a single slice, a random point P is chosen as a cutting guide, dividing the slice into three uneven portions. The central question—who is most likely to get the biggest piece?—mirrors the problem of determining the probability that area(△ABP) is the largest among the three sub-triangles formed inside △ABC. Furthermore, we ask: how can we make the division fairer? Using Monte Carlo simulations, barycentric coordinates, and centroid properties, we establish that each friend has an approximately 1/3 chance of receiving the largest slice. Additionally, homothety and matrix representations provide insight into the geometric transformations affecting probability distribution. This presentation not only reveals the mathematical elegance behind fair division but also offers a playful, pizza-inspired approach to understanding probability and geometry in a causal scenario.

This study examines whether pornography preferences resemble one’s romantic partner and if this similarity is linked to relationship and sexual satisfaction. Results indicated that greater similarity between one’s romantic partner and pornography preferences was associated with higher relationship satisfaction (r =.23, p < .001) and sexual satisfaction (r = .40; p < .001). However, the partner similarity and relationship satisfaction association was only significant for people who made higher levels of upward comparisons between their partner and pornography (p = .037). Additionally, partner similarity and sexual satisfaction association was weaker for those with more negative attitudes toward pornography (p = .033) and those who viewed pornography out of sexual curiosity (p = .044). These pornography preferences appear to play a role in relational outcomes, and their influence may depend on individual attitudes and perceptions.

This has been ingrained in the education system since the creation of Indigenous Boarding Schools. Ways that settler colonialism has been perpetuated by the American education system include: lasting curriculum from Indian Boarding Schools, models of education that value classroom hierarchy, and conferred white authority. In order to dismantle and fight back against settler colonialism, educators must adopt curriculum and strategies in their classroom that are anti-colonialist. Strategies for decolonizing the classroom include: demystifying white conferred authority, adopting a more democratic model of education, and being explicit about settler colonial structures in the classroom.

Their mission was to improve the station of workers through the promotion of "one big union", encouraging solidarity regardless of trade. The members of the IWW, or Wobblies, would often use songs as part of their protests. To help standardize their growing repertoire, a collection of these songs were published as the Little Red Songbook. While over 250 songs have been featured across nearly 40 editions since 1905, the IWW's pamphlets are by no means a complete survey of the music written for the labor movement. This presentation will highlight a number of songs, composers, and performers, of various affiliation with the IWW, and feature a couple of my own arrangements of songs from their repertoire.

Introduced by our professor Dr. Kang, we have experienced guided improvisation in class and on stage during the MUTY showcase. Through this practice we have connected with each other on a more personal level and enhanced our musical skills. Active listening during this experience creates a sense of togetherness amongst each other as well as an opportunity to make music in a creative and vulnerable way.

Performers will explore themes like individuality, community, and spontaneity all through collective musicmaking. The audience will be able to take part in discussing the improvisational process and explore the many benefits of improvisation such as relationship building, reducing social anxiety, and increased self-expression.

Although the title is not strictly connected to the music, it was a reference to the many new events, opportunities, and experiences in my life at the time of writing. It was also for the many equally exciting new beginnings for those around me (including my dad starting a new career and my brother starting college)! JDBM (2023) - The title of this piece is the initials of my grandmother, who this piece was written for. The music was inspired by the band Wintergatan, a group that regularly uses music boxes in their songs, both as a solo/featured instrument and as accompaniment. Once the music was written on manuscript, it has to be transferred to a long piece of paper by punching holes in it, which tells the music box which notes to play when. I hope you find the sound of this instrument as magical as I do!

Abstract: This work was an exploration of my complex relationship with the viola after playing for more than 10 years. When starting, I didn’t have a clear image that pointed to me in a direction. I was instead inspired by the packets themselves, and how they’d interact with other mediums. So, instead of thumbnails or sketches, I dove into playing with the material by cutting it with a knife, tearing it with my hands, and painting them with brushes and my old viola strings. The end product resulted in four variations of the packets, with one painted replica, that represents the dissociation, confliction, but tenderness I still felt towards my instrument.

Despite no longer participating in it, I was raised Catholic, and consider it a huge cultural part of my life growing up. As such, since egg tempera was an archival medium that many religious iconography artists used, it inspired me to paint Chewy in the traditional Byzantine style. Because this was also an iconography painting, I utilized many Catholic and generally religious symbols, such as the oratory gestures often found in these artworks (as shown with Chewy’s open palm, signifying sincerity), the dove (representing spiritual guidance), and red robes (signifying love).

I also chose to paint his head looking to the side with a front-facing eye, as it was a common way to paint dogs and the only dog-headed saint, Saint Christopher, in the artstyle.

For this particular gallery showing, students were encouraged to share their summer experiences through art in any way they deemed fit. For my piece, I wanted to capture a bunch of fun summer memories and compile them together. The result was a zine focused on the places I went, the projects I worked on, and my own personal interests. As a traditional and digital artist, I found time to doodle any big events in my sketchbook and tablet. This work was a creative endeavor outside my comfort zone, and I ended up greatly enjoying the process. Being able to see this piece amongst so many other wonderful artworks told me that while everyone's opinions on art may differ, the love of creation is universal.

For four years, students at SUNY Fredonia have taken part in this gruelingly long competition, learning how to work on a team and grow their animation skills. Each student's hard work has given SUNY Fredonia monumental achievements in the arts, with teams placing in the top 50 for best animations, and top 10 for best BTS. SUNY Fredonia has also sponsored 17 teams over these past four years, with a record 35 students competing in 2024.

With last year's prompt being related to AI, and how it will affect our future, students were able to express their concerns and hopes for the future through these stunning short films.

After their captain, Stella, allows herself to be distracted, she is informed by their navigator, Clement, that they are on course to collide with an oncoming asteroid belt. The animatic ends with Stella confident she can fly them through it. While the animatic does not tell the complete story, it is still a show of narrative storytelling and suggested motion.

A Regression Study on Quality of Life Factors in Nursing Home Residents Abstract: Understanding the factors that contribute most to nursing home residents' quality of life (QoL) is crucial for improving care and policy decisions. This study analyzes data from an online database to determine the relative importance of various factors, including physical health, social engagement, staff interactions, facility conditions, and autonomy. Using statistical modeling and regression analysis, the study identifies which variables have the strongest association with reported QoL scores. Preliminary findings suggest that while physical health remains a significant predictor, social interactions and staff attentiveness play an equally critical role in residents’ well-being. These results highlight the need for nursing homes to prioritize not only medical care but also social and environmental factors to enhance residents' overall experience. The study provides evidence-based recommendations for administrators and policymakers to optimize resources and improve care strategies, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for older adults in long-term care settings.

Start: 4:30 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): Sawyer Oppenneer Mentor(s): Allan Jay Cardenas Title: Expansion of Merocyanine Dye to Non-Polar Solvent Systems Abstract: Solvatochromic merocyanine dyes provide promising opportunities in spectroscopic quantitative analysis of binary liquid solutions. Changes in the composition of the binary mixture result in a significant change in the dielectric constant of the solution thus shifting the maximum wavelength of absorption. Using various binary polar solvent systems consisting of ethanol, isopropanol, and water, a linear relation between the maximum wavelength of absorption and concentration of solvent of interest was observed. This linear relationship can be used as a calibration plot in the determination of unknown concentration. Two new derivatives of Brooker's merocyanine dye with bulky alkyl groups were synthesized to limit aggregation and extend the application of this novel method to non-polar solvents such as benzene, toluene, and hexanes. This new spectroscopic method, applied to non-polar solvents, is simple and has the potential to streamline the process of analyzing non-polar mixtures such as gasoline and other types of fuel.

Start: 4:30 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): Callie Carter Mentor(s): Thomas Hegna Title: Glauconitic Replacement of Soft-Tissues in the Fossil Record: Green Graptolites Abstract: At least two green, mesh-like fossils were found in Mississippian-aged rocks. They were initially thought to have been glauconite-replaced frondose bryozoans, but there was some confusion because there is no record of transition from calcium carbonate to glauconite. The replaced fossils were later understood to be dendroid graptolites, clearing up the question of how the replacement occurred. Another graptolite species, Inocaulis, was also identified within the samples. The transition from the organic graptolite to glauconite is similar to that of organic-rich fecal pellets to glauconite. Additional occurrences of glauconitized fossils (molluscs from the Ordovician Gull River Formation) seem to fit this pattern—their organic periostracum was glauconitized while their shell was dissolved away.

Traffic conditions are simulated using real-world data from the New York State Department of Transportation, including vehicle volume and car-to-truck ratios.

Working with the Honors Program director and Grissom Hall residence director, I developed events catering to student interests. By semester's end, I will have been planned, promoted, and hosted thirteen inperson weekly events, many with enduring passive program components. Over sixty unique students attended events held in the Honors Lounge(Fenton Hall) and Honors House(Grissom Hall), expressing appreciation for the creative and engaging activities. Throughout the internship, student data and feedback were collected to understand their interests and scheduling preferences. Each event served as a learning opportunity for future improvement, incorporating advice from the previous intern. Crucially, feedback regarding internship optimization for future Honors students was communicated to my supervisors, leading to planned modifications for this internship based on my recommendations.

Start: 4:30 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): Cecelia Young Mentor(s): Thomas Hegna Title: Preliminary Work on the Stratigraphy of the Lower Portion of the Northeast Shale, Chautauqua County, New York Abstract: Western New York has a number of Upper Devonian marine shales, but many have received little attention. This study measured and described the lower Northeast Shale in Canadaway Creek, south of Fredonia.

Samples were collected at regular intervals to look at the elemental variation in the interval via XRF. The measured section covered about 20 m of the Northeast Shale. The stratigraphy was dominated by crumbly, grey shale with thin, more resistant siltstone beds. The siltstone beds become thicker and more abundant in the upper part of the measured section. The siltstone beds tended to persist for tens of meters laterally along the outcrop. No macroscopic body fossils were observed. One ambiguous sedimentary structure was observed containing distinctive internal pyritization. The section represents an anaerobic subtidal basin, with occasional siltier storm deposits. Preliminary XRF results show anomalously high concentrations of sulfur that were not apparent at the outcrop.

Societal, professional, and cultural barriers women face attest to the ongoing institutional oppression of women.Taking an intersectional approach, this research investigates gender disparities in educational leadership, and explores factors including gender and racial biases, reinforcements of the lingering and hierarchical model of the nuclear family, discrimination, and lack of resources. Using scholarly articles paired with interviews conducted with women superintendents in Western New York, this research aims to address gender disparities in educational leadership with targeted solutions. With the continued suppression of women in educational leadership positions, women are being harmed and limited in their potential. In this research, I will highlight ways institutions can implement better practices to ensure women are receiving impartiality in educational leadership.

Start: 4:30 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): Jasper Bateman Mentor(s): Thomas Hegna Title: Revising Away a Living Fossil: Restudy of Fossil Notostracans From The Permo-Triassic of The USA Abstract: Notostracans are often mistaken for “living fossils”. The taxonomy of known Notostracans is sorely neglected which is illustrated in Geyer et al. (2024). Notostracans are known from two sites in the United States: the Permian-aged Enid Formation in Oklahoma and the Triassic-aged Bull Run Formation in Virginia. Both were assigned to the genus Triops. This assignment was done with little critical analysis of the fossils. After re-examination, the specimens from Oklahoma were found to have belonged to the genus Olesenocaris, previously only known from the Triassic of France.The Virginian specimens were found to represent a new species of the genus Apudites. The myth of Triops cancriformis as a living fossil is only plausible with a superficial treatment of the fossil anatomy and systematics. Detailed restudy makes it clear that, even though the morphology is evolutionarily conservative, Triops cancriformis does not have a fossil record.

When mathematicians first started studying cyclotomic polynomials they believed the coefficients of these polynomials are either 1, 1 or 0. This is the case for many cyclotomic polynomials; however, in 1883 A. Migotti discovered the first cyclotomic polynomial in which a coefficient of “2” appeared. He also proved that if p and q are distinct odd primes, the coefficients of the cyclotomic polynomial are in {1,1,0}. This result has motivated mathematicians and opened a vast amount of research regarding the coefficients of cyclotomic polynomials. It is proven that the coefficients of the first 104 cyclotomic polynomials are in {1,1,0}. Bachman established the existence of an infinite family of such polynomials whose coefficients don't exceed 1 in modulus, and Schur proved that the coefficients of cyclotomic polynomials can get arbitrarily large in absolute value.

I have divided popular Instagram reels into seven categories; food, “hauls”, motivational speeches, “day in the life”, “get ready with me”, small business order packing, and funny animal videos. The data is collected by recording the amount of time participants spend watching the reels altogether, and how long is spent on each individual reel as well. Then, they are given a quick survey to demonstrate any changes in mood, and to take the demographic data of each participant.

Abstract: Growing up during the 80’s and 90’s was difficult for most children, but even more so if you’re a child with undiagnosed Autism. As a now-diagnosed Autistic, I will cover the occasions in my life that formed my experiences growing up and how those experiences still affect me as an adult today. Moments like not understanding social cues and not making friends easily that proved to make school and home a challenge. I will describe how I struggled with the lack of support and understanding, not only from society in general but also within my own family. Included in this is what it was like getting a diagnosis in my 30’s and how that has provided so many answers that were lacking in my childhood. It is my hope through this talk to shed light on what it was like growing up with Autism in a Neurotypical world.

The ‘Indiana Jones Era’ of museum and archive collections is ending and the era of Indigenous data sovereignty (IDSov) is coming into fruition. This research explores what IDSov is and why it is important to preserve Native American sovereignty as a whole within the U.S. political climate today. Using real world examples of repatriation, scholarly work from Indigenous writers, and examples from our own archive at SUNY Fredonia, I will be discussing the IDSov and its importance today and how going forward we can continue to pursue these efforts. Only by turning to Native American peoples can we begin to deconstruct colonialism.

Deaf individuals often navigate a world designed for the hearing majority, facing exclusion from education, employment, and public services. As a result, healthcare providers must respect these cultural dynamics and work to build trust with Deaf patients. When healthcare providers engage with Deaf patients in a culturally sensitive manner, patient satisfaction and health outcomes improve significantly, which changes the perspectives on the health and well-being of the Deaf community. Recognizing the Deaf community’s intersectional struggles is essential for fostering inclusivity, advocating for policy changes, and ensuring equitable access to education, employment, and healthcare. Having a greater variety of fantasies was associated with higher levels of openness and sexual sensation seeking, and lower levels of agreeableness. Personality was also associated with types of pornography viewed. Watching a greater variety of pornographic types was linked with higher sexual sensation seeking. Higher levels of neuroticism were linked with watching more pornography featuring power and control, and higher extraversion was linked with watching pornography featuring new experiences, multiple partners, or taboo themes. We also found individuals who began watching pornography at an early age tended to have exhibited higher levels of conscientiousness and agreeableness.

Our findings highlight the connections between personality traits, sexual fantasies, and pornography preferences, suggesting that traits like the Big Five and sexual sensation seeking may influence both the variety of fantasies and pornographic content viewed.

Start: 5:15 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): William Damiani Mentor(s): Courtney Wigdahl-Perry Title: Enviormental History of the Fredonia Reservoir Abstract: The Fredonia Reservoir serves as the village of Fredonia's water supply. Several recent boil water orders have been issued to the residents due to problems with the water for many different reasons. The debate about what to do with the Fredonia Reservoir is complex and very difficult. This project aims to construct a profile of the reservoir's past to aid the community in making an educated decision about the reservoir's future as a drinking water source. The biological proxy that this study uses is diatoms, diatoms are single-celled algae that have a silica cell wall which allows them to be preserved in lake sediment. Specific diatom species serve as physical and chemical indicators of past environmental conditions. Detailed data collection is still ongoing. Most diatom genera have a benthic habitat and are at least moderately motile. There is a large hiatus in diatoms from 32-45cm in the sediment core.

Start: 5:15 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): Sydney Hawkins Mentor(s): Courtney Wigdahl-Perry Title: Characterizing the Relationship Between Benthic and Pelagic Algae in Chautauqua Lake, NY Abstract: Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are a threat to water quality globally. HABs refer to accumulations of freefloating, pelagic algae. However, there are other algae present in the ecosystem. Benthic algae grows attached to the lake substrate, and it is typically neglected by conservation efforts despite being a foundation for lake biodiversity. We investigated how pelagic algae blooms affected benthic algae growth, and we hypothesized that the blooms were inhibiting benthic algae by reducing the amount of light available to the substrate. Pelagic and benthic algae were measured at eleven sites around Chautauqua Lake, NY. Our data observed a decline in the amount of benthic algae when pelagic algae increased. This suggests that as HABs emerge, benthic algal growth declines. We further calculated the biovolume of the cyanobacteria Gloeotrichia echinulata, and found that it dominates Chautauqua Lake’s phytoplankton assemblage. We continue to investigate both pelagic and benthic algae in Chautauqua Lake.

Improving swallowing through cough strengthening remains an especially important aspect of treatment for Parkinson’s Disease patients. SLPs need to have clinically relevant information on the effects of each treatment program in order to best treat patients with Parkinson’s Disease. While both EMST and smTAP have demonstrated improvements in cough efficacy, their impact on vocal health remains underexplored. The smTAP treatment protocol requires vocal fold compression during treatment, while EMST does not. This study aims to understand the relationship between these cough strengthening treatments and vocal health in patients with Parkinson’s Disease. Both cough strength and vocal health will be compared pre- and post-treatment to determine the effects of smTAP.

The purpose of this literature review is to appraise previous research findings on the impact of vocal hygiene programming for at risk voice users. This literature review delves into studies that examine the impact of vocal hygiene programs on this population. Singers have been identified as an at risk group for voice disorders. As such, they might benefit from vocal hygiene programming and/or the services of an SLP. This presentation highlights the emerging themes in previous and current literature, as well as identifies areas of need for further research.

Abstract: During last semester we conducted research in our Research Methods class, examining how SUNY Fredonia students perceive their friendships based on the campus-related situation in which they met. We identified these campus related situations as three categories: living situation (on campus, off campus Fredonia, off campus not Fredonia), class, and extracurricular activities. In this process we developed a hypothesis, research proposal and conducted the research. We conducted quantitative research in the form of a survey in which we questioned 34 Fredonia students about how they perceive their friendships and what factors affect their answers. This was followed by qualitative research using sit down interviews with two participants, in which we looked at students’ friendships on a more personal level, exploring their motivations, experiences and feelings towards their friendships. We would greatly appreciate the opportunity to share our detailed findings with the campus community at this year’s OSCARS research exposition!

By training an algorithm on a dataset of images depicting light and heavy congestion, the model learns to distinguish between these categories. Once trained, the model will be used to classify new images, determining whether they show light or heavy traffic. This approach has potential applications in traffic monitoring and urban planning, enabling automated congestion analysis from visual data.

Through my research and observations as an activity leader at Elderwood ALF, I have noted that physical activities, such as daily exercise programs, art programs, bowling and crocheting, can help these residents retain these skills even as they regress with both dementia and aging. Throughout my internship, I have deduced that activities such as walking and the daily exercise program are most beneficial and also promote the use of both fine, gross motor, and hand eye coordination skills for maintenance. I have also experienced and learned firsthand how activities leaders can also support residents with more progressed cases of Alzheimer’s who may not be able to use skills independently so that they, too, can engage in physical activities.

Start: 5:15 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): James Hepler Mentor(s): Matthew Purtill Title: “Instability of Stream Morphology: Monitoring Stream Dynamics in Dewittille Creek” Abstract: Dewittville Creek, a tributary of Lake Chautauqua, features a site of significant erosion. A restoration project, involving an artificial rock wall and instream spurs, aims to reduce bank erosion. This study focuses on mapping the stream morphology of this site over several years to determine erosional trends in and around the stream. Long-term evaluations of restoration projects serve to prove the effectiveness of currently favored designs. The study involved mapping channel geometry and stream flow changes using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to produce a change detection map between the topography of different years. The Wolman pebble count method was utilized for bedload and gravel bar sampling. Findings indicate that a shift in water direction towards a new channel is accompanied by significant erosion at the base of the rock wall. Additionally, larger pebble sizes suggest that this stream is dynamic, and we will continue to monitor the evolving channel morphology.

Glad that you Asked Abstract: Soil judging is a hands-on field conference that takes place over three days. The purpose of this conference is to learn how to understand, classify, and assess soils based on their physical and chemical properties. Multiple schools from around the Northeast Regional Soil Judging Area come to participate and compete against others. The 2024 competition was held at the University of Rhode Island. The event consists of two practice days, and the final day being the actual competition with individual and group events. Soil judging provides unique and valuable field experience/techniques for a wide range of occupations. This event is a great way to network yourself, see different soil structures and formations, and get fun field experience.

5:15-5:45: RESEARCH POSTERS - MPR Start: 5:15 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): Mia Enders Mentor(s): Wentao Cao Title: Critical Mineral Concentrations in Upper Devonian Strata Abstract: In this preliminary study, we conducted test analyses of Upper Devonian bedrock strata in western New York using geochemical analyses. Pellets of studied samples were analyzed using Shimadzu ED-XRF 7200 facility with standardized analyses. Comparing with the upper continental crust, the analyzed rocks in the Upper Devonian strata show elevated concentration of vanadium, copper, zinc, lanthanum, cerium, lead and sulfur. The enrichment of sulfur is consistent with petrographic documentation of sulfide minerals in the specimens. The chemical analyses also reveal varying results across different sections of the same outcrops, pointing out local control in elemental accumulation. Our chemical analyses indicate that the Upper Devonian in NYS could be considered for selecting critical minerals. Future work using more compressive strata results would help determine the fundamental mechanism that led to the increase of these elements.

Start: 5:15 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): Harrison Youngers; Sophia Kormalos Mentor(s): Jonathan Kniss Title: Behavioral and Genetic Effects of BPA Exposure on Dopaminergic Neurons in Caenorhabditis elegans Abstract: The goal of this work is to analyze the neural effects of environmentally relevant doses of BPA on the roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans. In these worms, dopaminergic neurons are important for non-associative learning behaviors such as habituation to stimuli and swimming-induced paralysis. Therefore, we are assessing the effect of BPA exposure on these dopamine-mediated behaviors and investigating whether BPA exposure results in changes to the function or expression of components of dopaminergic synapses. We find that after exposure to BPA during development, young adult worms require more anterior touches to reach habituation than a control group. Assays to test the effects of BPA on swimming-induced paralysis are in progress. Preliminary RTPCR experiments suggest that BPA exposure results in altered expression of dopaminergic genes, such as decreased cat-2, dop-1,2,3,4 and trp-4 expression and increased dat-1 and rcat-1 expression.

Start: 5:15 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): Colleen Tytler Mentor(s): Todd Backes; Jonathan Kniss Title: Testing the Role of Creatine as an Antioxidant in Developing Zebrafish Abstract: When in excess, reactive oxygen species (ROS) exert oxidative stress, leading to the malfunction of lipids and proteins, along with DNA damage. Creatine, a highly ubiquitous supplement in the fitness industry, has been shown to have protective effects against several muscular, neurological, and cardiovascular diseases by modulating the existence of ROS. This study aims to investigate the toxicity and antioxidant properties of creatine monohydrate and creatine hydrochloride in larval zebrafish. Oxidative stress was induced via exposure to hydrogen peroxide or by creating a tail wound. A fluorescent ROS probe was used to quantify the location and concentration of ROS present. Thus, we predict that creatine type, concentration, and exposure time will impact zebrafish lethality and differentially scavenge ROS as compared to control embryos. Preliminary data will be presented at the 2025 OSCAR Expo.

5:15-5:45: RESEARCH POSTERS - MPR Start: 5:15 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): Jackson Osborne-Coy Mentor(s): Shahin Mehdipour Ataee Title: SSIM Abstract: Monitoring dynamic scenes efficiently is crucial in various applications, such as security, automation, and research on periodic scene detection. In this project, we developed an application that runs on a Raspberry Pi computer, utilizing an HD camera to continuously monitor a scene by comparing each video frame to a reference frame. The application employs the Structural Similarity Index (SSIM) to measure similarity, logging similarity scores in real time. Implemented in Python, this system is part of a larger research initiative aimed at detecting periodic patterns in video streams or recorded footage. The motivation for this work stems from the need to create an embedded, cost-effective, and efficient solution for video analysis. Existing methods for frame similarity measurement often rely on computationally expensive.

Start: 5:15 PM Type: Poster / Display Presenter(s): Taylor Ingrao Mentor(s): Lisa Walters Title: Impact of Social Media on Gen Z in the Workplace Abstract: This research project examines the impact of social media on Gen Z in the workplace, focusing on three key facets: psychological, social, and professional. Through a comprehensive literature review, the study explores how social media influences workplace behaviors and productivity. The research will result in a hypothesis and research questions for further study, culminating in a poster presentation summarizing key findings. This project aims to provide insights into the evolving challenges and opportunities that social media presents for future professionals.
