Fredonia College Foundation Awards, Funds and Scholarships

Page 1

FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

The Fredonia College Foundation, established in 1964, is devoted to the advancement and excellence of Fredonia and its students. The Foundation has worked with alumni donors and friends to build endowed funds to promote, advance, and support the activities and programs of SUNY Fredonia. Each year the Foundation provides funding for student scholarships, grants, and special academic enrichment. The scholarships we provide to academically talented and economically challenged students in support of their goals is central to our mission. Thanks to the generosity of private philanthropic support to the funds listed in this brochure, the Foundation allocated $1.8 million from 589 endowments.

Fredonia provides a unique educational experience that prepares people to be leaders. In small classes, hands-on experience, and a vibrant campus life, Fredonia students become skilled, connected, creative, and responsible, preparing for the world beyond graduation. But more than ever, they depend on those who invest in their futures. Private philanthropic support is more vital than ever to ensuring access to a Fredonia education. This has become one of our most demanding challenges as the costs of attending college have shifted more to students and their families. And although the Governor’s Excelsior Scholarships do help middle-income families with tuition, there are many other costs to attending college — fees, books, room, board — that are still challenging for many students. With your continued commitment, the Foundation will continue on our mission to provide an outstanding educational experience through scholarships and academic enrichment programs.

The need for increased private philanthropic support is vital to providing the financial assistance and academic margin of excellence our students deserve. Please consider making a commitment to assist us in our mission of providing outstanding educational experience to our students by generously supporting an endowed fund or scholarship of your choice, or by working with our team to establish your own endowed fund for student support or academic enrichment. You can make an online gift or find additional ways to make a gift at fredonia.edu/give. The dollars we raise go directly toward enhancing “The Fredonia Experience”.

I offer a heartfelt thank you for your continued generosity and commitment to Fredonia. I hope that others will join in making a difference to this generation of learners. Together, we can ensure that we are truly impacting the lives of our future Fredonians.

Sincerely,

You can make a difference through legacy giving

Planned gifts play a critical role in the future success of Fredonia. We are forever grateful for this commitment and honor those who remember Fredonia in this way with special recognition as a member of the Dallas K. Beal Legacy Society. Knowledge of your intentions allows the university to plan for the future.

Membership does not depend on the size of the gift, gift intention or your age. Simply identify the Fredonia College Foundation in your estate plans so we can realize a strong future. Visit us at fredonia.edu/foundation for more information.

LEAVING A LASTING LEGACY THROUGH ENDOWMENT

Have you considered establishing an endowment fund?

It’s a wonderful way to help the State University of New York at Fredonia provide financial support to a student, project or program, receive tax benefits and continue these good efforts in your name or in the name of a loved one, far into the future.

An endowment is a permanent fund that will exist in perpetuity, with the principal preserved and only a portion of the annual income available for expenditure. Endowment funds are invested by the Fredonia College Foundation with the goal of providing both annual expenditures and appreciation of the principal.

Three options are available to assist you in reaching the $10,000 threshold with no restrictions or $20,000 with restrictions threshold:

1. Named Endowment

2. Building Towards Endowment

3. Doors to Opportunity Pooled Fund

A donor can choose between funding an endowment all at once, or building toward the $10,000 or $20,000 goal through the following options: Building Towards Endowment or Doors to Opportunity Pooled Fund. When the fund reaches the agreed endowment level, the foundation will use a percentage of earnings, currently 4.5 percent, to fulfill the fund’s purpose as designated by the donor.

A donor has the ability to make additional contributions to his/her fund at any time. Gifts of cash, securities, real estate, life insurance and bequests can be directed to a specific fund.

The professional staff at the Fredonia College Foundation has the knowledge and expertise to assist donors in fulfilling their philanthropic goals. For information, please contact the foundation office at (716) 673-3321 or visit our website at fredonia.edu/foundation
