ANNUAL REPORT 2022

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

When the Fredonia College Foundation was established almost 60 years ago, its founders understood that philanthropy has the transformative power to change lives. That vision is realized through the foundation’s mission of aiding students in achieving their degrees, enabling them to lead productive and engaged lives in their communities and beyond.

The highest priority of the foundation is to provide scholarship support to academically talented and economically challenged students. In each of the previous five years, the foundation has provided an average of $2.3 million in scholarships, grants and academic enrichment programming. Your generosity and those of others make this possible. Today, the foundation manages nearly 600 endowed funds to support our students and the university.

For the calendar year ending December 31, 2022, the Fredonia College Foundation received $2,331,449 in gifts and had an endowment market value of $42,992,490 with total net assets approaching $49 million.

The university is proud of its long history of enrolling many first-generation students, nearly 20 percent of the students today. More than 90 percent of our students receive some type of financial aid. Private philanthropic support makes the dream of a Fredonia degree possible.

Through the generosity of alumni, faculty, staff, friends, organizations, foundations and businesses, financial support means a bright future for Fredonia students and the university. The long list of foundation supporters in the pages that follow is testimony to the legitimacy of our vision.

Your confidence in SUNY Fredonia and the Fredonia College Foundation is greatly appreciated. On behalf of the board of directors, thank you for helping us meet the challenges of today and prepare future generations of Fredonia students.

Sincerely,

The Fredonia College Foundation holds nearly 600 endowed funds , created by generous donors like you . The funds and awards span every program and academic area of study, every cohort of students, and are awarded based on criteria such as financial need and academic excellence. To see the entire list of awards, funds, and scholarships, visit fredonia.edu/scholarships.

DALLAS K. BEAL LEGACY SOCIETY

Their gifts come in many forms, including bequests by will, charitable gift annuities, charitable trusts, beneficiary designation of retirement plans, life insurance and bequest savings bonds. All are greatly appreciated and help to ensure the tradition of excellence for generations to come.

2 FREDONIA COLLEGE FOUNDATION | ANNUAL REPORT 2022

Alumni couple gives back by creating scholarship

“We felt inspired to give back in some way.”

That’s what led Craig and Katherine (Lanz) Dupra, ’80, to create an endowment in the Fredonia College Foundation that will ultimately lead to scholarship awards for students majoring in Business Administration, Communication: Public Relations or Music Education.

Choosing those disciplines wasn’t a coincidence. Katherine received a Mus.B. in Music Education; Craig, a B.S. in Business Administration, and their son, John, a B.S. in Communication: Public Relations – all from SUNY Fredonia. Craig and Katherine met at SUNY Fredonia and graduated together in 1980.

“The idea of funding a scholarship came as a way to say thank you to Fredonia, to give back to our community and to have a positive impact on the future. With the recent struggles our world has experienced from the pandemic and its impact on all aspects of society, we would also like to support students pursuing degrees in the mental and physical health fields in the future. We were very excited about hearing Fredonia added an Exercise Science program and hope to additionally support it,” explained Katherine.

Craig and Katherine worked with Associate Director of Development Ashley Dates to establish the Dupra Family Scholarship in the Doors to Opportunity Endowment. The pooled fund was developed by the foundation as an

opportunity for donors to build an endowment fund over time to reach the endowment level of $20,000.

Once the fund meets the endowment threshold, the Dupra Fund will be able to make scholarship awards.

“I have often reflected on what a wonderful job Fredonia did in the music education field in the School of Music,” Katherine remarked. She has high praise for Professors Emeritus Phyllis East and W. Stephen Mayo and SUNY Distinguished Professor Emeritus Thomas Regelski.

“Our time in student teaching was too short back then, now it has been extended, but they gave us philosophically a wonderful approach to action learning and hands-on learning – things that are very relevant today; how to motivate students and be seen by teachers,” Katherine explained.

Today, the Dupra family is involved in the wood flooring industry. Craig and Katherine opened Dupra Hardwood Flooring in 1983, Installers Warehouse in 2008 and Revel Woods in 2018. John, who earned his degree in 2006, joined them in 2018.

Ms. Dates describes the Dupras as very passionate about higher education. “They’re grateful for the success they’ve had, and they appreciate the education they received from Fredonia; it gave them a good foundation for their future success.”

BRINGING HONDURAS MEDICAL BRIGADE EXPERIENCE BACK TO CAMPUS

REMEMBERING FREDONIA

In addition to annual giving, making a planned gift to the Fredonia College Foundation allows donors to assist the university in its growth and at the same time help to achieve their personal goals. The following charitable gift options are just a few examples that may offer tax savings and other advantages to donors.

Bequests. Consider identifying a dollar amount or percentage of your estate to support SUNY Fredonia. Your gift can be directed to set up an endowment fund or add to an existing or unrestricted fund.

Life Insurance. Rather than cancel policies you no longer need, you can name the Fredonia College Foundation as the beneficiary, or simply donate the policy outright.

Bank Accounts and CDs. Naming the Fredonia College Foundation as the “payable-on-death beneficiary” of your bank account or certificates of deposit can be a smart option. You own the assets for your lifetime and have them available for your use. Upon your death, the assets pass directly to us without going through probate.

Retirement Plan Assets. Your most efficient estate planning option may be leaving all or a portion of your retirement plan or IRA to charity, because tax laws often subject these assets to the highest combined income and estate taxes upon death. You can explore passing more tax-favored assets to your family.

Securities. Give stocks that have increased greatly in value, particularly those producing a low yield. If you have owned them longer than one year you will pay no capital gains tax on the transition, and you can deduct the full fair market value.

Charitable Remainder Trust. A charitable remainder trust pays a fixed or variable income to the donor. The payments are made either for life or a period of time not to exceed 20 years. At the end of the trust’s term, the balance in the trust supports SUNY Fredonia’s mission.

Corporate Match. Check with your human resources department to find out if you are eligible to receive a charitable corporate match from your employer. Donors simply fill out a charitable matching gift form required by their employer. Your charitable donation to the Fredonia College Foundation is then matched by the employer up to a certain percentage based on their policies. This is a quick way to increase the impact of your gift to SUNY Fredonia.

Charitable Lead Trust. This type of charitable trust pays income to one or more charitable organizations, typically for a period of years, after which the remaining trust assets pass to family members.

Real Estate. This is a simple donation if you own property that is not mortgaged, has appreciated in value, and you no longer need or use. You can deduct the fair market value of your gift and avoid capital gains taxes. Plus, you have removed that asset from your taxable estate.

Note: All gifts are subject to the Fredonia College Foundation Gift Acceptance Policies. The Fredonia College Foundation is a charitable 501c3 organization that receives gifts for the benefit of the State University of New York at Fredonia.

Fredonia’s Bicentennial: Our Springboard to the Future

As the State University of New York at Fredonia begins to approach its bicentennial year in 2026, we honor our past as we begin to prepare for an exciting future.

The concept of what is now SUNY Fredonia started in 1826, when area residents established a form of higher education beyond the “common school.” It became known as Fredonia Academy, a regional center for individuals to receive teacher training. In 1867, the former academy became the Normal School. State-certified teaching credentials were given to graduates and the seeds to include music were sown. The campus location and programs since then have evolved and expanded. By 1948, Fredonia became a four-year college in the newly created State University of New York system and now offers a renowned School of Music, innovative science programs and a widereaching liberal arts education.

SUNY Fredonia’s historic mark of a bicentennial year also inspires us to look forward, and continue to build a sustainable campus that is prepared to pivot, adapt and change. Fredonia recognizes the importance of personal empowerment through the acquisition of knowledge and experiences, and places great value on diversity, equity and inclusion. By providing support through scholarships and programming, SUNY Fredonia has the ability to impact more students. It is through government and private funding, grants, and scholarships that SUNY Fredonia is further enabled to make higher education accessible and affordable to all, thus increasing a student’s persistence and potential to achieve social mobility.

Please take the time to reflect on SUNY Fredonia’s rich 200-year history and how you can impact the SUNY Fredonia of tomorrow. Your philanthropic support can help to shape the future of our students and our campus. Please consider making a gift to the Fredonia College Foundation, 272 Central Avenue, Fredonia, NY 14063 or online at fredonia.edu/bicentennialfund

REED LIBRARY UNVEILED HISTORIC DISPLAYS

Regardless of your connection to SUNY Fredonia — as a graduate, current student, parent, or friend — you are not only a representative of our past and present, you are also a stakeholder in Fredonia’s future.

Fredonia will be remembered for the life-changing experiences of our student and alumni. You can ensure those same experiences continue for the next generation of Fredonia students by establishing an endowment through the Fredonia College Foundation.

u Named Endowment — An outright gift of $20,000 creates an endowed fund. The first award is made four full quarters after the initial gift. Ongoing focused assistance continues according to your wishes through the Memorandum of Agreement. Visit fredonia.edu/give to learn more.

u Building Towards Endowment — These begin with an initial $2,000 gift, with a six-year time frame provided to reach the fully endowed level of $20,000.

u Doors to Opportunity Pooled Fund — This option provides the opportunity for more than one person to build a single endowment. It begins with a charitable gift. Contributing donors will be acknowledged through the use of their name or the name of the account they are building. When the contributions to the fund reach the endowment level, the funds may be moved to a traditional Named Endowment.

With endowed funds, the principal remains invested in perpetuity and a portion of the income earned from the investment is used to finance scholarships, academic programming, or other institutional priorities.

If interested, please contact the Fredonia College Foundation at (716) 673-3321 and a team member will be happy to answer any questions and assist you through the process.

The Fredonia College Foundation is dedicated to supporting the State University of New York at Fredonia, and that includes supporting our shared goal of environmental sustainability. Through the design process of this publication, our team identified a number of ways that we can make this important document more efficient in regards to the materials and dollars used in its production and mailing. These changes include everything from the type of paper used, to the number of pages included, both of which have contributed to the size and weight of our annual report over the years. You may notice that we have not included a complete list of our endowments but refer you instead to our website, fredonia.edu/scholarships, to view our growing list of endowed funds. You can help us in our goal of environmental sustainability by ensuring that SUNY Fredonia always has your most current email and mailing addresses by contacting us at foundation@fredonia.edu or calling (716) 673-3321.

INDEPENDENT AUDITOR’S REPORT

To the Board of Directors of Fredonia College Foundation of the State University of New York, Inc., Fredonia, New York

Opinion

We have audited the accompanying financial statements of Fredonia College Foundation of the State University of New York, Inc. (a nonprofit organization), which comprise the statements of financial position as of December 31, 2022 and 2021, and the related statements of activities, functional expenses, and cash flows for the years then ended, and the related notes to the financial statements.

In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Fredonia College Foundation of the State University of New York, Inc. as of December 31, 2022 and 2021, and the changes in its net assets and its cash flows for the years then ended in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America.

Basis for Opinion

We conducted our audits in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America. Our responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditors' Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Statements section of our report. We are required to be independent of Fredonia College Foundation of the State University of New York, Inc. and to meet our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with the relevant ethical requirements relating to our audits. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion.

Management's Responsibility for the Financial Statements

Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America, and for the design, implementation, and maintenance of internal control relevant to the preparation and fair presentation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

In preparing the financial statements, management is required to evaluate whether there are conditions or events, considered in the aggregate, that raise substantial doubt about Fredonia College Foundation of the State University of New York, Inc.'s ability to continue as a going concern within one year after the date that the financial statements are available to be issued.

Auditors' Responsibility for the Financial Statements

Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements as a whole are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an auditors' report that includes our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance but is not absolute assurance and therefore is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in

accordance with generally accepted auditing standards will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. The risk of not detecting a material misstatement resulting from fraud is higher than for one resulting from error, as fraud may involve collusion, forgery, intentional omissions, misrepresentations, or the override of internal control. Misstatements are considered material if there is a substantial likelihood that, individually or in the aggregate, they would influence the judgement made by a reasonable user based on the financial statements.

In performing an audit in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards, we:

• Exercise professional judgement and maintain professional skepticism throughout the audit.

• Identify and assess the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error, and design and perform audit procedures responsive to those risks. Such procedures include examining, on a test basis, evidence regarding the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements.

• Obtain an understanding of internal control relevant to the audit in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of Fredonia College Foundation of the State University of New York, Inc.'s internal control. Accordingly, no such opinion is expressed.

• Evaluate the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of significant accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluate the overall presentation of the financial statements.

• Conclude whether, in our judgment, there are conditions or events, considered in the aggregate, that raise substantial doubt about Fredonia College Foundation of the State University of New York, Inc.'s ability to continue as a going concern for a reasonable period of time.

We are required to communicate with those charged with governance regarding, among other matters, the planned scope and timing of the audit, significant audit findings, and certain internal control related matters that we identified during the audit.
