About Our Guest Speakers
SUNY Fredonia alumnus, the Honorable James A.W. McLeod, served for many years as a judge in the Buffalo City Court in the Eighth Judicial District of New York.
A native of Utica, Judge McLeod, after earning his associates degree from Herkimer Community College, transferred to the State University of New York at Fredonia, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971. He then attended the State University at Buffalo Law School, where he earned his J.D. degree.
Judge McLeod began his legal career by becoming the second African American attorney in Buffalo history to be hired as an associate attorney with a major law firm, the then firm of Doyle, Diebold, Bermingham, Gorman and Brown.
He was admitted to the New York State Bar in March 1975. Subsequently, he was also admitted to the Federal District Court, Western New York District of New York; the Federal District Court, Northern District of New York and the Federal District Court, Court of Appeals in 1976.
Judge McLeod became the first and only African American attorney to head the Buffalo/Erie County Legal Aid Bureau’s Public Defender Office; as well as the first and only African American to serve as Erie County Second Assistant County Attorney. His past or present legal affiliations include the Minority Bar Association of Western New York, Western New York Thurgood Marshall Organization, New York State Bar Association, and the Erie County Bar Association where he was the first and only African American to serve as the association’s Treasurer.
Judge McLeod was elected to the bench in 1999, then re-elected in 2009 and 2018. He retired in 2019. He currently serves as Treasurer and Trustee of the Western New York Foundation, and a Trustee of Medaille University. Judge McLeod has been awarded the prestigious Buffalo Branch NAACP Medgar Evers Award and the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Fredonia Alumni Association. He has lectured for the New York State Bar Association Continuing Legal Education Program, as well as schools and community groups.
SUNY Fredonia alumna, the Honorable Lynne (Bona) Ruda, serves her community as the first female and youngest Mayor of the Village of Lancaster, N.Y., as well as its Director of Economic Development. Mayor Ruda is chairperson of the Grants Committee and has been a vital part in bringing in over $25 million back to the community through local, state, and federal grants. She also serves as the chairperson of the Climate Smart Committee, and has been a driving force in the village recently receiving the designation as a New York State Bronze Certified Climate Smart Community.
Mayor Ruda earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education in 2008, the coveted Performer’s Certificate, and a Master of Music degree in Music Education in 2009, all from SUNY Fredonia. A cellist and a member of the Buffalo Musicians Association — Local 92, Mayor Ruda has performed throughout Western New York in classical and popular music arenas.
Mayor Ruda has been a volunteer firefighter for the village for 15 years. She is proud to be the first female driver and interior firefighter in the Eagle Hose Company and received the 2016 Chief’s Award and the 2015 Administrative Member of the Year Award. She is also a founding member of the Lancaster Beautification Committee.
In addition to her civic duties, Mayor Ruda is a music teacher at Lancaster High School, serving as Director of Orchestras since 2008. Latin Honors Graduates
Undergraduate students who have attained high scholastic achievement are eligible to graduate with honors, which are indicated to the right of the student’s major. Students graduating Cum Laude (C) have a final cumulative quality point average of 3.30 to 3.49; Magna Cum Laude (M), 3.50 through 3.69; and Summa Cum Laude (S), 3.70 or higher. For students graduating in May, August and December of this year, a preliminary determination was made considering the student’s most recent QPA. A final determination is made following the degree audit and is reflected on the student’s diploma. Through a gift from the Fredonia Alumni Association, Latin Honors graduates wear a symbolic gold cord with their academic gown.

Alyssa M. Bump
Class of 2023 Senior Challenge
Each year the graduating class, as its gift to Fredonia, conducts the Senior Challenge. Graduates donate a set amount representing their class year, this year it was $20.23. Funds were earmarked by the class for a scholarship.
Commencement Traditions
The Fredonia Commencement you are part of today incorporates traditions dating back to the earliest universities in the 12th century.
The Mace
During the processional, note the mace carried by the mace bearer and the batons by the marshals. The mace, by ancient tradition representing the power of office, symbolizes the authority of the President of the university. Dedicated to the late Mary H. Cranston, former faculty member and Dean of Women, and the late Anna B. Haskin, a lifelong friend of the university, the mace for Fredonia was presented by the Fredonia Alumni Association to the university in 1972. Assisting the alumni association with the creation of the mace was the late Helen (Clees) McKee, ’40, ’62.
Batons, dedicated to the late Robert W. Kasling, a science faculty member from 1946 to 1966, are carried by the Faculty Marshals to represent the direction and leadership of the faculty.
The Academic Costume
Academic regalia derives directly from the caps, gowns, and hoods worn during the Middle Ages for protection against weather and unheated lecture halls. You can distinguish the three ranks (bachelor, master, doctor) by the styling. The bachelor's gown, which is designed to be worn closed, has pointed sleeves. The master's has an oblong sleeve with notched slits, through which the arms are passed. The gown may be worn either open or closed. The doctor's gown has distinct, bell - shaped sleeves, may be worn open or closed, and is easily distinguished by the three velvet bars on the sleeves.
Usually the gowns are black, although there may be decorative front panels and sleeve bars on the doctoral gowns, representing the subject specialty.
It is the hood that indicates by the color of its lining which college or university granted the degree, and by the color of the border in which academic field the degree was earned. Some of the general categories are:
White for Arts, Letters and Humanities
Brown for Fine Arts
Copper for Economics
Drab for Business
Light Blue for Education
Pink for Music
Dark Blue for Philosophy
Golden Yellow for Science
The cap and mortarboard are worn with one corner facing forward. The tassel may also represent the academic subject by its color, although doctors may choose the option of metallic gold. A recent tradition has the undergraduate candidates wearing their tassels to the right, moving them to the left only after the degree has been conferred.
My Companion text by
Edith Franklin WyattYou are my companion Down the silver road, Still and many-changing, Infinitely changing. You are my companion. Something sings in lives — Days of walking on and on, Deep beyond all singing, Wonderful past singing.
Wonderful our road, Long and many-changing, Infinitely changing. This, more wonderful — We are here together, You and I together, I am your companion; You are my companion, My own, true companion.
Let the road-side fade: Morning on the mountain-top, Hours along the valley, Days of walking on and on, Pulse away in silence, In eternal silence. Let the world all fade, Break and pass away. Yet will this remain, Deep beyond all singing, My own true companion, Beautiful past singing: We were here together — On this earth together; I was your companion, You were my companion.

Emergency Egress from Steele Hall Basketball/Track Arena
The emergency exits are located in the lower level of the venue on either side of the stage. Exits are also located on both sides of the lower level in the rear of the venue. These exits should be used by guests seated on the floor and lower bleacher level. Persons sitting in the upper bleachers and balcony should exit through the doors leading into the upper level hallway, turn left through the atrium adjacent to the swimming pool and exit the building through the outer door.
Regardless of which exit you use, please move away from the building, across the street or parking lot, to allow first responders to enter the building. Please do not use the elevator during an emergency evacuation. Ushers are here to assist persons in exiting the building.
Due to fire and safety requirements, there is no standing room on the balcony. The limited seating on the balcony is reserved for Special Needs guests.
There are medical services available during the ceremony. These can be found off the lower level of Steele Hall. Please contact an Usher or University Police Officer if you need assistance.
Please follow fire requirements which prohibit smoking in this building.
