/J6> 4 Homecoming Weekend is one of the most anticipated events of the year, for students as well as alumni, and the 1984 Homecoming celebration will be remembered as one of the best. The highlight of the weekend was, of course, the coronation of the Homecoming Queen on Saturday night, November 17. Emcees for the evening were Jim and Linda Wilcox, who were quite entertaining as well as informative. They were able to make the evening successful, despite several blackouts during the introduction of the Homecoming Court. Those honored as members of the Court were Melanie Baker, escorted by Jeff Herman, Sandra Colston, escorted by Dan Davis, Connie Huffaker, escorted by Steve Brown, Robin Little, escorted by Scott Kennedy, and Lisa Williams, escorted by David Nelson. The 1983 Homecoming Queen, Tammy Wiens Peterson, escorted by Brent Heinrich, returned to Bethany to relinquish her crown to her successor, Miss Connie Huffaker.

In addition to the coronation of the Homecoming Queen, several other events kept students and alumni busy the entire weekend. As well as several reunions and receptions, events included the AW S Mother-Daughter Breakfast and Style Show, the AMS Father-Son Breakfast, a Homecoming concert by the Jazz Band, an alumni basketball game, the traditional Homecoming Basketball Game, and the annual Arts and Crafts Festival, which gave alumni and area craftspersons the opportunity to exhibit their handiwork. Doubtless, Homecoming Weekend 1984 was a resounding success.

f/(ca/t Llh/ — /pc?o This year’s Heart Pal was a memorable occasion,, and included the announcement of several engagements and the coronation of the 1985 Heart Pal Queen. “ Moonlight and Roses,” this year’s theme, enhanced the romantic atmosphere for the guests. The entertainment, provided by Lisa Luck, added a touch of class to the evening. Dr. Loren and Linda Gresham, who were emcees, gave the evening another wonderful spark of romance, and brought exciting and inspiring thoughts for the guests. The Greshams also announced a large number of engagements and each young lady was honored with a peach rose. The climax of the evening was, of course, the announcement of the Heart Pal Queen. Members of the Heart Pal Court were: Margaret Ann Bundy, escorted by Tim Adams, Sherry Burks, escorted by Jay Price, Jana Cantrell, escorted by George Culver, Kelly Cogdill, escorted by Steve Tallman, and Lisa Mercer, escorted by Kevin Huffaker. FALL FEST BNC’s annual Fall Festival was held on Saturday, October 27. Attractions at the carnival included a dunking booth, featuring Dean of Student Development Bobby Martin, and a booth giving students the opportunity to throw eggs at Associate Deans of Student Development Linda Gresham and Mike Brooks. Several organizations also participated with booths selling carmel apples, popcorn balls, and cotton candy. The evening was topped off by the traditional Trick-or-Treating in the dorms. Fall Fest continues to be one of the favorite events of the year, if for no other reason than it gives the so-called mature college student the chance to be a kid again.

W elcom e W eek Welcome Week, an event never to be forgotten, proved to be a smashing success. Freshman Initiation began the first string of events that went on throughout the week. the initiation was the Outlaw Skit. The Goons had constructed a town in the corner of the gym, complete with saloon, bank, and an outhouse. Pow Wow 1984 was nothing less than a treasure trove of talent. Who could have guessed that the BNC campus was inhabited by a menagery of spectacular individuals: gifted singers, creative musicians, convincing impressionist, skillful actors, and expressive shouters? The opening and closing numbers consisted of original music by Edgar Finck and Shelley Hulin. Performances were also judged and rated in categories of Most Humorous Individual Act, Best Organizational Skit, and Best Musical Skit. Hard work and excellent talent were put into this year’s Pow Wow. It was truly an event worth attending and a unique show of talent. Sophomore Ron Funk was this year’s winner of the coveted Campus Clod crown. Seven of the finest clods ever to attend BNC competed in the AMS/AWS sponsored pageant. Ron Funk scored points with the judges with his recommendation for future evangelists to follow the role model of Bob Barker — “ Come on down!” David Fortenberry, the second sophomore in the contest, garnered first runner-up and Mister Congeniality. He shot his way to the judges’ hearts with his Cupid outfit in the sweatsuit competition. Last year’s first runner-up became this year’s second runner-up as Kevin “ Psycho II” Huffaker rounded out the list of winners. Emcee Michelle Eller, AW S president, looked on with amazement as she watched the clods perform. Who could forget senior Brad Nichols’ suma-kitty wrestling, or Darren Wodard performing solo with the Toad Suck Ballet Company? Truly, it was a night to remember. The final score for the game was 14-0, another win for the uppers, but not without a hard workout from the freshmen. Barbie Jordan, freshman quarterback, proved to have outstanding athletic ability and with a strong drive from the freshman offensive team, Lisa Silvey, receiver, managed to hold on to the ball. tximtifj Century JBrama “ A Man For All Seasons,” the story of Sir Thomas More’s refusal to acknowledge King Henry VIII’s second marriage, was presented by the Speech Department in Herrick Auditorium March 8 and 9. Bruce Russell portrayed More in a demanding and exhausting role. King Henry VIII, a sort of cameo role of the dominant king, was played by Barry Wood. More would not accept the king’s marriage to Anne Boleyn, believing that a divorce from Queen Catherine would be unlawful. King Henry who know More to be an honest man, demande( his support. When More would not alter his opinion, Henry tried to force him to do so through the sniveling Secretary of the Council, Thomas Cromwell (Ron Hefner). Meanwhile, More’s family could not understanc how his conscience could remain so steadfast. Hi< wife Alice, played by Michelle Eller, and daughter Margaret (Helen Goulden), loved him deeply, however, and supported him in his decision. The play was an intense production in which both the actors and audience had to fully concentrate. It required more work than the standard modern-day comedy and thus surprised many with the abilities of the BNC stage.

Lady Alice (Michelle Eller) visits Sir Thomas More for the last time before he is executed. William Roper (Don Goscha) refuses ref us to acknowledge Richard Rich’s (Mike Boyd) presence when he comes to ask Sir The Thomas More for a job. Thanks to a foot-stomping concert held in SAGA, this year’s Roller Rag got off to a great start. Headed by sophomore Steve Leopard, the musicians belted out songs from the Fifties, both mellow and rock. Dawn Pardue captivated the audience with her deep, throaty voice. The spectators could hardly sit still; most jumped up every now and then to let the music group know they were highly appreciated. After the end of the concert, the crowd rushed to their cars and headed for Yukon, where they spent the rest of the evening skating to various Fifties

songs and even some from the Eighties. Awards were given to Chad Ward and Robin Umsted, who took the “ Best Dressed Couple” prize money. “ Best Dressed Bo\ went to John Mark Griffin, authentic right down to his n and blue tattoo. “ Best Dressed Girl” was taken by Conr Huffaker, who made us remember our “ cocoon” stage before blossoming into a “ butterfly.” She wore granny glasses and headgear, as well as clothing that can hardly be described by words. Junior-Senior Banquet ' 0/2 t /e ^ Jl/tz”

This year’s Junior-Senior Banquet turned into a ritzy affair, complete with tuxedo-clad valets and waiters, a sparkling cider fountain, cheese and crackers, and a 1967 red Corvette which was on display at the banquet entrance. Entitled “ Puttin’ on the Ritz,” the affair was well attended by nearly 80 people, who dined on Cordon Bleu, an array of vegetables and breads, and numerous tasty and unbelievably fattening desserts. The Junior Class of 1985 took a gymnasium, the Fred Floyd Center, and transformed it into a banquet hall that impressed even the most skeptical. False ceilings and walls were created to give the illusion of enclosure. An elegant harpsichord was brought in to add a touch of class to the evening. Various melodies, played by Edgar Finck, filled the area, making the atmosphere complete. Entertainment was provided by John and Rena Nance, a husband and wife team, who tickled the audience into uproarious laughter. Mike Dellefate, Scott Moseley, and Mike Boyd were chosen from the audience to assist the comedians in a couple of skits. The Nances also ministered in song, sharing their love of Christ and different experiences througl which He had helped them. Their last song, “ Praise, Praise,” concluded the evening.

GRAD UA TION 1985

a flurry o f activity

The day began early for some graduates. On Saturday, May 18, a breakfast was held honoring the Phi Delta Lambda initiates. Only the top 15% of the 1985 graduating class were chosen. Phi Delta Lambda is a national honor society of the Church of the Nazarene with thousands of members worldwide. Later in the morning, the capping and pinning ceremony took place for the Junior and Senior nursing majors and their families. At this time, the Juniors received their caps, the Seniors — their pins. Each member was also given flowers to present to those deemed special to them during their college career.

Debbie Townsend, president o f Phi Delta Lambda, introduces Dr. Ruth Vaughn, a former speech professor at Bethany Nazarene College, to a lively morning audience. The future looks bright for these nursing graduates and the profession they are entering.

BA CCALA UREA TE Once again, the day was met with eager graduates. First on the agenda for the day was Baccalaureate. Waiting in line had now become habit for the graduates as Herrick Auditorium filled with family, friends, and well wishers. Robin loves to shop for bargains, play charades, read trivia cards and eat good food during her leisure time. For her, BNC has been a haven the past four years. Robin feels Christian higher education is the biggest

asset a college-bound Christian could hope for. Those choosing to attend a Christian college find an environment conducive to Christ-like living, learning, and loving. Linda Gresham and Mike Brooks, both Associate Deans of Students, have greatly influenced Robin’s life and from them, she has learned that individuals are at their best when they are honest and genuine, and that “ neat” people don’t have to hide behind masks. She is also grateful to Prof. Debbie Spindle for her patience and support. Robin’s plans for the future include marriage to Scott Kennedy after graduation. She also hopes to enter the business field, using her Communication degree in the area of Public Relations. According to Robin, “ I also hope to be a very good wife — able to bring home the bacon AND fry it up in a pan!” W ho’ s W ho

He has held memberships in Alpha Nu, Mission Crusaders, and Chorale, and is Mortar Board Vice President and a former Resident Advisor. His awards include the President’s Honor Roll and Scholarship, College Marshall, and Outstanding Freshman. Jeff believes that apart from receiving quality education at BNC, he has learned to incorporate the knowledge he has gained into his spiritual development, and is grateful to all his science professors for showing him that faith and scientific endeavors go hand-in-hand. However, the most important change he has

experienced at BNC has been in his priorities, placing people before other things. Jeffs philosophy of life is based on the attributes of love, which have always motivated and guided him in his relationships. He spends most of his off-campus time working as a Laboratory Assistant at Baptist Medical Center. He also enjoys playing basketball, softball and golf, and just having a group of friends over for nachos and fellowship. Above all, he has enjoyed learning to be a good husband. After graduating, Jeff plans to proceed to OU Medical School and eventually set up a Family Practice in a small town before settling down to raise a family.

Lori Duce Stewart Lori Duce Stewart is an English major/Home Economics minor from Marlow, Oklahoma. Her organizational memberships include Sigma Tau Delta, Mortar Board, Missions In Action, Secretary of Mission Crusaders, and former Vice-President of Cardinal Key. She also holds the Willis B. Dobson Memorial Scholarship and Dean’s Scholarship. Lori is a strong supporter of Christian higher education because it can take a young person, facing a multitude of life-influencing decisions, and surround him/her with caring professors, a campus of Christians from which to choose friends, and an atmosphere of prayer combined with fun. This type of atmosphere has molded Lori into a person who is ready to influence her world for Christ. According to Lori, BNC has changed her from an introverted, shy girl to an

person. She attributes her self-confidence mainly to her brother and her husband. Several professors and staff members have endeared themselves to Lori, including Lyle Tullis, Anita Reynolds, Dwain Grant, Gwen Ladd, and Bob, a member of the maintenance staff. Jim and Linda Wilcox have also been special friends, showing Lori that it is possible to put family first, even in today’s career-oriented world. Lori finds excitement in washing dishes, folding clothes and sweating over a hot stove during her leisure time. She als enjoys basketball, reading and inviting friends over for nachos and M *A*S*H . Her major goal after graduation is to work until Jeff graduates from Medical School and eventually set up a Family Practice clinic. As a writer and future mother, she still has her

In addition, he helped form the Political Awareness Club, actively participated in the Science Council, and was named to the Dean’s Honor Roll. Wayne believes that the niggest change in his life at BNC nas been in the area of self-discipline, which he feels is :he key to success. He also relieves that in any accomplishment, it is only through our willingness to

sacrifice that we can reach our goals. While he enjoys college fellowship at Bethany First Church, he also keeps busy with his bus driving duties. His philosophy of life, taken from Galatians 5:13-14, is “ Love your neighbor as yourself.” Wayne is grateful to Dr. Larry Mills for showing him the importance of living a Christian life in the business community, and former Dean Mowry for his friendship and Christian care. After graduation, Wayne plans to proceed to Graduate School and obtain a Masters Degree in Health Care Administration, since his ambition is to hold an administrative position in a hospital.

like I have become more self-confident . . . I never thought I’d see the day when I’ d actually feel ready to teach.” Debbie is especially grateful to the Camerons, a Bethany family who has adopted her, guiding her through those lonely times, and given her a home away from home. Also of importance to Debbie is her advisor, Dr. Rena Walker, who has become a model she hopes to imitate in the future. Debbie’s goal after graduation is to teach in the upper Elementary grades or to teach Math in a Junior High School.

Paula was Outstanding Freshman and College Marshall, and was named to the President’s Honor Roll and the National Dean’s List. Paula plans to continue her

education after graduation and work toward a Learning Disabilities Teaching Certificate. She would like to help disabled students feel good about themselves, since a good self-concept can compensate for their disabilities. Her ultimate goal, however, is to acquire a Doctorate in Education. Paula’s advice for underclassmen is, “ Absorb all the information you can from your classes; don’t settle for mediocrity, and aim your sights high in whatever you do.”

Anything Goes The 1984-85 Student Council, a competent, well-informed group of people, really worked hard to bring about a vast improvement in student government. Headed by President Melany Kyzer, this dedicated bunch of students let their leadership capabilities shine. STUCO is a service organization designed to meet the needs of BNC, to be utilized by students, administration, faculty, and staff. It is the responsibility of the council to be available to the campus, to accentuate the positive, and to change what is unacceptable to students. This year’s council has succeeded in extensions of

s tu c o

curfew, improvements in SAGA services with the opening of the new breakfast room, student surveys and Gratitude and Grievance Week. All the members worked hard at their duties. Melany Kyzer proved herself efficient in STUCO meetings. Her presence was the calming factor during Freshman Orientation Week. She served as Chairman of the Nazarene Student Leadership Conference, and fought for student rights at the Board of Trustees meetings. “ More than ever, I believe we have finally bridged the gap between students and administration. I feel we have all worked hard in both groups to reach this point.”

“ I’ ll be right here,” President Melany Kyzer seems to be saying as she nestles comfortably among her furry friends. E.T. couldn’t look cuter, and he certainly could not have accomplished as much as this spunky Texan has this year.

Concentrating on the spiritual growth and atmosphere of the campus, Vice President of Campus Ministries, David Nelson, took charge of STUCO chapels once a month. He arranged for the Steve Camp, Cruse Family, and Lisa Luck concerts. His campus ministry project was helping out at the Children’ s Convalescent Center.

David “ Duck” Nelson, Vice-President of Campus Ministries, spends his rare free time communing with nature in his own private duck sanctuary.

Robin Little, Vice-President of Student Services, did a great job on Pow Wow, the school calendar, and in the Culture Series with the Canadian Brass Concert. Sandra Colston, Vice-President of Social Life, made certain that there were enough parties to keep everyone happy. She organized the All Day Event at White Water, the Greek Olympic Party, Homecoming festivities, Fall Carnival, Yule Feast, Heart Pal, and Roller Rag. She had a very busy year! Dan Davis, Treasurer, had the rough job of keeping the books and working out the budget. He was also co-chairman of the Election Board, along with Secretary Connie Huffaker. Besides keeping minutes and informing the other STUCO members of the itinerary, it was Connie’s responsibility to keep the office clean, which was not an easy job. We can only hope that next year’s Council will work hard to fill the shoes that this year’s officers will leave behind. And those are mighty big shoes!

Mortar Board

Mortar Board is a Senior honor society and service organization which recognizes the characteristics of scholarship, leadership, and service. This year’s Mortar Board members were very active in several service projects. Perhaps the most exciting was working with the youths at St. Joseph’s Children’s Home in Oklahoma City. They had several opportunities to get acquainted with the kids, including a picnic and recreation time at the Children’s Home, a BNC Basketball game, and an OKC 89’er baseball game. Several on-campus service projects, such as serving at receptions, completed the busy Mortar Board schedule. Through Mortar Board, these seniors had ample opportunity to get involved in serving their campus and community. Tw o of the organization’s major objectives are to develop an understanding of American business enterprise, and help students establish career goals. The club sponsors monthly meetings featuring guest speakers representing various business careers. A

Choral Society really knows how to “ Handel” large choral works with ease. They perform works by composers such as Brahms, Schubert, and Bach, as well as contemporary composers. They performed a Christmas program of yuletide classics including the world premiere of “ Adeste Fidelis” by German composer Zsolt Gardoniji. For their Spring program, Choral Society held an ’85ers Birthday Party, consisting of works written by composers

“ O Motet” by Heinrich Schutz, two anthems by George Frederick Handel, a Lutheran Mass in F by J.S. Bach, and a medley from Showboat, by Jerome Kern. Choral Society consists mainly of vocal music majors, but many community members with the gift of song participate, as well as other interested BNC students. With the leadership of Dr. Dwight Uphaus and a lot of “ vocal grease,” Choral Society had a sensational year.

Note Worthy Music has often been called the one truly common language of the world. Nothing is as beautiful as the sound of finely tuned instruments, blending perfectly together to produce a mood or desired atmosphere. The BNC Concert Band, composed of “ Note Worthy” and skilled musicians, has developed into a group which brings out the best music has to offer — beauty and enjoyment. The Concert Band performs annually for the entertainment of students. Their off-campus activities also serve the community and local organizations. The group is open to all musicians, regardless of major or field of interest.

These students are given chances to conduct worship services where they can practice preaching. They have chapel on Friday mornings for this very purpose. The club also took a trip to Crescent, Oklahoma, where they helped in the service and taught Sunday School. These are all wonderful activities which make the Timotheans a very special group of fellowshipping religion students.

The American Studies Program, sponsored by the Christian College Coalition, allows college students the opportunity to spend a semester in Washington, D.C., studying such important topics as the Economy, the Legislature, or International Relations. American Studies Program students also work while in the nation’s capitol, often as interns in various government offices and departments. The American Studies Program provides an exciting opportunity to meet new people and to be exposed to the government on a close-up basis. BNC has consistently been well-represented in recent years, and this year was no exception. Congratulations to Scott, Debbie, Lisa, and Daron.

Ducks Unlimited

Making its debut on campus this year was Ducks Unlimited, a new organization formed by several Snowbarger hunting buffs who had trouble fitting into any other existing club. David ‘Duck’ Nelson, the club’s official “ mascot,” found it difficult to escape these avid outdoorsmen and was the object of much harassment, all in the spirit of Christian love, of course. Fortunately for David, this “ Unique” organization was dissolved at the close of hunting season, and he was able to resume a normal life. “ But watch out, David,” warned one member, “ there’s always next year!”

‘Duck’ Nelson tried in vain to escape the sights of the fierce Ducks Unlimited hunters. Members included Dan Frazier, Keith Metcalf, George Culver, Brady Sliman, Jerry Lewis, Steve Slothower, Scott Harper, and David ‘Duck’ Nelson, mascot.

Football

The football season soon arrived on the BNC campus. A draft was issued, players were drafted, practices were called. Players endured strained muscles, broken bones, jammed fingers, not to mention the horrendous if not unpredictable weather of windy Oklahoma. The few fans who braved the cold, wind, and rain, were amazed by the dedication of the players. To some, intramurals is taken lightly; not to those at BNC. This year the winning team was Alpha. For them all the hard work paid off as they clinched the championship.

Redskin Volleyball Power The 1984 season held much excitement for the Redskin Volleyball Team. An impressive record of 26 wins and 8 losses allowed the team to capture yet another hard earned District 9 Championship Title. The women fought, spiked, and bumped opposing teams off the courts and were rewarded with a ranking of 14th in the NAIA standings. The number of fans increased at the few home games. Spectators were thrilled by the grace of Kathy Goings, amazed by the strength behind the powerful spike of Lisa Christoph, and applauded the expert coaching ability of Stephane Shellenberger. Although these individuals contributed much to the team’s glowing

record, they alone could not have succeeded without the combined efforts of the other team members. One loyal fan commented proudly, “ When they’re out on that floor working together, I mean really together, something happens. It’s as if nothing alive can stop them.” The team was shocked when Coach Shellenberger resigned her position as Head Coach. “ It surprised us all.” Sarah Jane Freeman told the Arrow, “ She’ll be hard to replace.” Indeed her expertise and determination will be sorely missed. But when asked about its effect on the team next year, Lisa Christoph optimistically replied, “ If anything, w e’ll be even better.”

Just For Kicks The Redskin Soccer Team kicked off into another successful year. Hard practices paid off as the Redskins proudly displayed a record of 10 wins, 8 losses, and 1 tie. “ W e had an excellent season,” Coach Harmon stated. “ I’m very proud of the squad. Six of the eight losses were lost by only one goal. They worked very hard to get where they are.” The team once again clinched the District 9 NAIA Championship for the fourth consecutive year. It seems that BNC is the team to beat. Coach Harmon is looking forward to next year with anticipation of another District 9 title. Though the team will be losing a few players, they will also be gaining new ones. Indeed the squad’s future looks bright.
