A MESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNING BODY

As we come to the close of the academic year governors are reflecting on this year’s achievements at Bremer - what a lot we have to celebrate.

Among the year’s highlights was Ofsted recognising us as a GOOD school, following this we have gone from strength to strength. Our music programme is concluding its second successful year and we would like to congratulate our art department on the GCSE show this year, which wowed visitors.

In these uncertain and turbulent times for our country we recognise and treasure the diverse nature of our school and wider community.

We are so proud of our harmonious and respectful community; difference in our community is our greatest strength and we remain united and resolute in celebrating and harnessing our differences going forward.

The governing body would like to thank all those staff leaving us this summer and wish them all the very best for their future. We wish our Year 11s good luck with their next steps and look forward to seeing them for their GCSE results in August.

We would like to say huge thank you to all our staff for their hard work and commitment. We also wish to thank our pupils and their families for making this such a successful year at Frederick Bremer.

Next year the governing body will be focused on developing a marketing strategy for the school and would be very grateful to hear from anyone in the community who may have specific skills in this area, which they feel they could share with us. GOODBYE TO STAFF

We are sorry to say goodbye to a number of members of staff who are moving onto new exciting opportunities in their lives. Although we will miss them very much, we wish they all the best in their new adventures and hope they will stay in touch. In particular, we want to say a huge thank and congratulations to Mr Bell who is retiring after many, many, years’ of service both at Frederick Bremer and Warwick School. He has contributed so much to so many pupils, and to the school. Thank you so much.

PARENT/CARER CORNER Young Carers

Some pupils at Frederick Bremer are involved in caring at home. They find themselves having to juggle school work with the need to look after their parent or carer. If you think that your child has to look after you or your partner due to your physical, emotional or mental health need, please get in touch.

We could talk through with you what sort of additional support you think might help – it might be a chance for your child to mix with other young carers, it might be the need for school to understand their heavier responsibilities, maybe they need to be able to check up on you from time to time during the school day.

There are many different ways in which we might be able to help but, unless you tell us, we won’t know so please phone Deborah Davies, Family Support Co-ordinator, on 020 8498 3349 or email d.davies@bremer.waltham.sch.uk to discuss various options.

STOP PRESS We are delighted to announce that IMECE, a highly respected community group, have agreed to host weekly advice surgeries at the school beginning in September. A skilled advisor will be on hand to provide advice on some of the issues specifically affecting black, minority ethnic women living in Waltham Forest. Advice not only on issues such as honour based violence, domestic abuse, female genital mutilation or forced marriage, but also covering housing and welfare benefits or they will know where to go to get the latest information.

Appointments will be booked directly through IMECE or with our Home/School team. More details to follow – check our website from the beginning of the Autumn term and look out for further announcements.

CURRICULUM NEWS

Year 9 are beginning an exciting Creativity Challenge curriculum enabling them to specialise in particular subjects such as Art, Music and Spanish. Please contact Ms Hillman if you have any questions about the curriculum.

Many pupils will have the chance to take a GCSE or BTEC qualification in this subject at the end of Year 9. This gives pupils a chance to do some in-depth learning in a subject area of their choice. This also means pupils can have a wider range of GCSE/ BTEC courses over the 3 years from Year 9-11 which means they can focus on the English Baccalaureate subjects as well as other subjects. Here is some feedback from Year 8 about what they have chosen and why.

I chose Citizenship because I am interested in Law and society. I like Citizenship because there are 2 exams which are both an hour each.

I chose Religious Studies because I'm interested in learning about other peoples religions and their ethnic backgrounds.

The reason why I chose Art is because I like Art. Art is so important to me because when I’m older I want to be an artist and It will improve my Art skills.

I picked Drama for GCSE because it is fun and I believe that I'm good at it. If I'm not, then I will have more drama lessons to practise my drama. It is also interesting and gives time for your body to relax.

Year 9 pupils have been preparing for the move to Key Stage 4 and GCSE/BTEC courses. They are the first year to take the new courses (in all but a few subjects) with a focus on more exams and much less controlled assessment.

We will support them every step of the way as they take on the challenges of the new curriculum. Here are some of their thoughts about why they chose the subjects they did and what they are looking forward to.

In Year 10, my hopes are that I am chosen for the Simmons & Simmons work experience. I hope to build up a very strong and positive CV by becoming a prefect or hopefully Head Girl.

I have chosen French because I really enjoy the lessons. Also it will help me in the future because I will be able to work in different countries that speak French.

Another reason why I have chosen this subject is because I will get an Ebacc qualification (English Baccalaureate) which I could put on my CV to increase the chances of me getting a job. In my opinion I think it is nice to know another language.

Choosing my GCSE options was something I gave a lot of consideration and thought to. I kept in mind my future plans for a career path in Psychology, and decided to choose subjects which I not only have an interest in, but ones that will support me with my ideal career choice.

I chose: Sociology, History, Triple Science and Drama, and this year I took my Polish GCSE (which contribute towards the Ebacc).

YEAR 8

Another successful year draws to a close. It is amazing how much has been achieved by the pupils in Year 8. Their achievements extend from the academic, the sporting, the creative arts and the numerous fun and fundraising exploits of Year 8.

We have achieved so much because we work together as a team and this is one of the greatest strengths of the year group.

It is difficult to identify the highlights because there are so many which stood out. Below are some highlights from pupils in Year 8. Personally, I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the Year 8 over the year and I wish them every success next year.

This year I was involved in various things such as athletics and concerts. I received a lot of medals and came first in the Borough Champion 100m.

I enjoyed our trip to Lille. I was able to practice my French and I would like to go again next year.

I enjoyed the football tournament. We gave our very best and we drew closer as a group.

This year I was the basketball team captain. I was able to develop my leadership skill.

YEAR 9C REWARD TRIP TO TRAMPOLINE PARK

Year 9 have embarked on a lengthy battle this year, culminating in 9C winning the final reward of an afternoon out to Better Extreme Trampoline Park.

9C and staff had a phenomenal time jumping, flipping, falling, twisting and turning. Overall, we had the best time ever!

I would like to say a personal well done to 9C and their form tutor Mr Patel for being such a fabulous form and good luck for keeping your title next year.

YEAR 9 CELEBRATION EVENING

On Monday 11th July, Year 9 hosted their first ever Celebration Evening which was presented by Rayyan and Saaid who were very entertaining. The evening was packed with performances of singing, dancing, drama, poetry and art work. I would like to say a massive thanks to all of the pupils involved for being brave and getting up on stage. You were all phenomenal!

I would also like to say congratulations to the pupils who were nominated for awards and a brilliant well done to those who won.

To continue with the thanks, I would like to say a big thank you to families and friends that attended the evening. Thank you for your great support, you were amazing at performing ‘drum rolls’!

Overall it was a spectacular event and I am very proud of my year group and all that they have achieved this year. Bring on Year 10!

Paloma has really fitted into your school. She is very happy. She tells me lots of nice things about teachers, boys and girls, about lessons which are different from here.

Paloma, an 11 year old international pupil from Spain joined the school for two weeks in order to improve her English and to understand the English educational system.

She told me she wanted to stay with you for one more year .

She, as it were, has been flabbergasted by the warmth of our pupils and our staff. She also has been seduced by the depth, the state-of-the art and variety of our curriculum.

She is very motivated to learn English now and this is thanks to all of you. I have no words to thank you for what you are doing...

ASC PROVISIONS

Last week, our ASC provision was delighted to host artist David Braunsberg, who has kindly donated £400.00 to the provision for Art and Design.

David led an art session with a number of our ASC pupils who had a brilliant time meeting him and developing their skills with an expert, and it was incredibly motivating for pupils and staff to work with an artist who also has a diagnosis of autism.

Dillon Robinson, Year 9 said: “I think it was a nice experience to work with him, he was very nice and I liked him a lot and the painting we did was very fun”.

We would like to say a huge thank you to David for the donation and taking time out of his busy schedule to meet with and work alongside our pupils.

It was a truly inspiring visit.

LITERACY MATTERS Frederick Bremer’s Little Free Library Needs You

Many of you will have noticed the Little Free Libraries that have popped up around E17. It is a fantastic initiative which promotes reading and the sharing of free books.

We were very excited to be the first school in the country to install our very own Little Free Library. You can find ours in our foyer so pupils, parents and visitors to the school are able to see it, use it and share their books.

It has proved very popular since it opened its doors and over 400 books have been taken out. If you, or family and friends, have any books you would like to donate so that we can keep pace with demand, please send them into school and ask your child to deliver them to Ms Kelly in ME1.

PAIRED READING PROGRAMME

This reading initiative again proved to be very popular and highly successful. All of the Year 8 pupils made progress, with over 80% making more than a year’s progress in the five weeks the programme ran (in January and February). Following this success, the paired reading program launched again in June.

As part of the leadership training for prefects, pupils attended a reading workshop. The training involved learning how to help pupils approach unfamiliar words, how to select appropriate texts and why regular reading is so important.

Ten Year 10 pupils were then selected to work intensively with handpicked Year 8 tutees during morning registrations.

I HAVE A DREAM

Inspired by the incredible performance by Martin Luther King, our Year 7 and 8 pupils have all been involved in writing, editing and performing their own speeches encapsulating their hopes for the future.

The class winners then competed in the grand final with an independent judge. The quality of the content and the professionalism of the performances were astonishing and made the final decision very challenging.

We would like to congratulate everyone who was involved. The worthy winners were: Emilia Catlin 8B and Sarah Senu 7B

YEAR 7 SPELLING BEE CHALLENGE

During year seven at Frederick Bremer our pupils have been introduced to a whole plethora of new words.

On July 11th their knowledge was put to the test and our new Year 7 Spelling Bee Champion, Stanley was crowned a winner!

Pupils were busy testing themselves and one another.

As reflected in our school values, Frederick Bremer is committed to providing an inclusive school community where all pupils feel safe and supported. Following LGBT Month, we decided that our library needed to include more books which speak to all kinds of pupils, whatever their orientation.

Additionally we recognized that mental health and emotional wellbeing is so important in school, where our young people spend so much of their time. According to the BBC, 43% of 200 teachers surveyed were finding it difficult to get resources to support pupils with mental health issues.

We are raising money to purchase books which focus on these important issues and tell stories that can educate, support and reassure pupils. On July 8th some pupils were involved in a variety of activities to raise funds and promote this cause. We are aiming to raise ÂŁ350.

YEAR 11 VS YEAR 10 CHARITY BASKETBALL MATCH

On Friday 1st July the Year 11s challenged the Year 10 basketball players to a Charity Basketball match in order to help raise money for Whipps Cross St. Margaret’s Hospice in memory of one of our Year 11s (Connor Ellis’s) mum who passed away this term.

We would like to congratulate the Year 10 and Year 11 basketball players for a successful match with the well-deserved Year 10s winning with a score of 25 to 54.

This was an amazing match that showed not only the brilliant skills our pupils have but also shows the good sportsmanship and attitude they have to raise money for such a worthy charity.

A special thank you goes out to Ms Hart and Mr Hogge for stepping in and playing on the Year 11 team but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to beat the highly professional Year 10 team. Look out for them next year as they will be a team to watch!

COMPUTER SCIENECE COMPETITION

On Monday 11th July, Norlington School hosted what would become the first Computing Challenge in Waltham Forest. Frederick Bremer participated in the competition and we were amongst pupils from George Mitchell, Lammas, Norlington and Heathcote School.

The main focus throughout the day was to solve a real world problem using Python programming. Pupils were given a brief to create an efficient and functioning program that could solve such a problem. The task at hand included the use of encrypting algorithm to encrypt and decrypt messages by using the Caesar Cypher (a Roman encryption technique).

Pupils were also required to create a friendly Graphical User Interface (GUI), present their development process and solution at the end of the day. The real world problem was inspired by the Enigma Machine and the work of Alan Turing during WW2.

Firstly, after being introduced to a few functions and methods in Python programming, pupils created a clear plan in order to find a solution to the problem by using flowcharts to make the structure of the program. Secondly, pupils transferred their flowchart into an algorithm in the form of pseudo-code (which is just a combination of coding and English but not actual code).

Everyone had a different task to complete, for example, some worked on making the program usable in a GraphicalUser-Interface, whilst others worked on presentations and the actual code to encrypt and decrypt. Despite not being able to implement all the desired features into the program, pupils from Frederick Bremer were able to solve the main problem and were judged as the group with the best presentation.

This was due to the effective team work and delivery of the presentation where the program was explained to the rest of the pupils and teachers. Frederick Bremer achieved a 3rd place in the borough!

A pupil commented: “It was quite an enjoyable day because not only was the task itself interesting, we all learnt new techniques from the experience�.

EMPTY CLASSROOM DAY

Empty Classroom Day took place on Friday 17th June. It is a day to celebrate and inspire learning and play outside of the classroom. This year Frederick Bremer got well and truly involved!

Frederick Bremer joined schools from across the world in taking learning outside. We turned the playground into a classroom and the grass areas became havens for the creative arts with the reciting of poetry, drama rehearsals and sketching taking place.

Empty Classroom Day was a brilliant opportunity to turn off the computer, the lights and shut the door of our usual classroom setting.

We went outside for a contrasting learning experience. This year the UK and Brazil were the chosen countries so we really wanted to get out there and contribute as well.

CHESS CLUB

Over the course of the year the number of players taking part in Chess Club has grown from strength to strength. New players have been taught how to play and they now compete on a weekly basis. Experienced players have developed their strategy and problem solving skills as well.

One of our regular members, Daniel, 7E said that “ it is an enjoyable and relaxing activity to do on a Tuesday afternoon.

New pupils have arrived and learnt new things and it is a pleasure seeing the other pupils developing new skills.

In addition to this, there is also the weekly challenge of beating the teachers (believe me, it’s possible!). All in all, I always look forward to coming down to the LRC every Tuesday and would strongly recommend it to anyone who is new to chess”.

From the experienced to the novice, and even the masters (teachers) take part, breaking barriers and forming friendships to victory.

Pupils and staff are welcome for friendly games and competitions, with prizes up for grabs.

FREDERICK BREMER MOCK EUROPEAN UNION REFERENDUM CAMPAIGN

On 23rd June 2016 Frederick Bremer foyer was transformed into a vibrant voting arena with pupils queuing to cast their vote for Britain’s future in the EU. 83% of pupils voted to remain in the EU, which was significantly above the national vote of 48% to remain.

This event was the culmination of two weeks of campaigning led by a group of six fantastic Year 9 pupils. They attended workshops to develop their knowledge about the EU and their campaigning skills.

They made leaflets and posters that they distributed at break and lunch time. They also ran assemblies and tutor time sessions. The level of political engagement and interest across the school was fantastic.

A week before our mock referendum, fifty pupils from Year,7,8,9 along with our Head Boy and Head Girl, took part in a vote on your feet style Great Debate on specific issues to do with the EU such as; immigration, trade, law making and the environment, led by the political organisation called Bite the Ballot.

Y10 ART GCSE VISIT TO SIMMONS AND SIMMONS

We had a very successful trip to Simmons and Simmons to introduce the Year 10 group to the Legal Firm’s permanent art collection. The Curator Jonathan Sharples took us around a selection of pieces which he had chosen to show the pupils which also related perfectly with their new project ‘Identity’.

The information about the artworks and the artists brought the works to life for the pupils and they responded by adding some fantastic comments, insights and questions about the works. We were also able to spend some time studying and sketching the impressive Richard Serra ‘Fulcrum’ sculpture at Liverpool Street Station. The Year 10s were an absolute credit to the school and themselves and we are looking forward to seeing their response to the trip in art form as part of their new project.

GCSE ART AND DESIGN EXHIBITION 2016

The 2016 Art Exhibition took place on Tuesday 14th June in the main school hall. The Year 10 and 11 work looked incredibly strong displayed in such a professional way and they were rightly very proud of their achievements.

The event was attended by pupils, parents, staff, governors and teachers from local schools and colleges as well as the art curator from Simmons and Simmons. The feedback from these visitors was extremely positive. All four Sixth Form college representatives who visited again thought the work and the show looked more impressive than they had seen in a school before.

The comment from Jon Sharples of Simmons and Simmons was: “Many thanks for your invitation and hospitality yesterday. It is such an uplifting thing to come and see. Congratulations on another amazing year’s work”. The Art curator from Simmons also informed their artists that our pupils were inspired by their work in recent trips to Simmons & Simmons. In addition, one piece of work by a Year 11 pupil was put on the artist’s Facebook page for all his 330,000 followers to see!

Well done to all the Year 10 and 11 Art and Design GCSE pupils and a big thank you to all the members of staff at the school who make this event possible.

YEAR 9 CLAY/PLASTER RELIEF PROJECT

The Year 9 pupils have been studying the artists Henry Moore and Carrie Yuen and their use of texture and relief in their sculptures. They then went on to design, sculpt and paint a paperweight. For this they had to push identity related objects into clay, build a wall around them and then mix plaster to pour into the clay. Once dry they had to carefully release the clay from plaster and then, almost archaeologically, clean the plaster relief objects that had resulted.

They are currently in the process of painting the plaster to enhance the relief sculptures that have emerged. We have been very impressed with the height of some of the relief shapes in the plaster artworks and the care they have been taking over this project.

STEAM

It has been a busy term in STEAM lessons, finishing projects and preparing for Exhibition days.

Year 8 pupils visited each other’s lessons to hear some really interesting presentations, see demonstrations of project work and ask questions about learning.

Parents of Year 7 pupils came in for lunch (prepared by Year 8 Catering pupils) and a tour of lessons in Sci-Art, Humanities and PE, as well as learning about the transferable skills their children have been learning in STEAM, and taking part in a Philosophy for Children session. Year 7 pupils were excellent guides, teachers, and facilitators, and made sure our visitors had an interesting and enjoyable time.

Our end-of-term cross-curricular STEAM days are packed full of interesting projects developed by our creative and innovative staff. Pupils have chosen their projects and will report back on their experiences at the end of term.

Projects include: A visit to Le Touquet in France; Pupil Charter; Eco-Spaces; London Parks, Art of Religion; Get Physical (kayaking or biking); Coding Challenge; Independence Camp; Theatre makers; Story-writing; Capturing Conflict; Bridges and Rockets; I am Acrylic; Conservation and London Zoo; Applique; Science Museum and instrumentation; and African Drumming.

Next year STEAM will become the Creative Curriculum, an innovative programme which will build on achievements so far to help our pupils become the best learners they can be.

On Monday 27th June, the year 8 STEAM Orchestra went to Goldsmiths University to perform in a competition. We played Billie Jean and Miss Buckley commended us on our performance. She said “well done, you smashed it!!”. Mrs Smith and Mrs Kaltak said we were brilliant and we did our school proud.

YEAR 8 STEAM ORCHESTRA PERFORMS AT GOLDSMITHS

The MiSST programme supports over 3000 pupils in 8 participating schools across London and believes that young people’s lives can be transformed through a classical music education.

All eight MiSST schools performed at the concert on Monday 27th June, this year hosted by Goldsmiths, University of London in their Great Hall.

The Orchestra played a fantastic performance of “Billie Jean” to a packed audience and they should all be incredibly proud of their accomplishment.

This was an incredibly enriching and enjoyable experience for all involved.

SUMMER CONCERT—JULY 2016

Year 7 and 8 STEAM pupils performed in the final Summer Concert – this was the biggest concert yet exhibiting their hard work and demonstrating how much progress they have made in such a short amount of time.

The orchestra opened both halves of the concert, performing many challenging classical works including the favourite In the Hall of the Mountain King, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and Finale. There were also performances from the beginner wind band and string ensemble in Year 7 and a great performance of Star Wars on the Boomwhackers. Pupils who have recently taken ABRSM grade exams performed many of the solo items in the programme.

There was a debut performance by the Frederick Bremer Quartet of Brandenburg’s Concerto who have been working with Dimitri Scarlato on a Saturday morning. Two members of the quartet have only been playing for under two years, their performance was very impressive.

The concert ended with a performance from the combined Year 7 and 8 choir, performing 3 songs ranging from Justin Bierber to Ellie Golding with beautiful harmonies and solos from Jahvace and Sydnie in Year 7.

The whole evening was a great example of how much they have progressed and how much the standard has improved in the short amount of time the school has been with the MiSST programme. A parent commented that they couldn’t believe the difference every time they come to a concert and how much the pupils were improving. Ms Kaltak thought the standard of the performers was of a high quality and the improvement the pupils have made since the beginning of the year is exceptional: “A truly enjoyable experience demonstrating the talent and commitment our pupils have as individuals and working together in Music performances”.

The music department are very proud of the pupils, their achievements and hard work.

MISST FUNDING SECURE FOR ANOTHER 4 YEARS

Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber has donated another £1.4 million to London School, matched by the Charles Wolfson Charitable Trust, to secure the future of the Music in Secondary School's Trust, a charity which the school has been apart of for two years now. MiSST provides instruments and a specialist music education for every pupil at KS3.

Andrew Lloyd Webber says “Never has a musical education been more important.

The Arts, and music in particular, are proven to empower young people with the life skills needed for a successful future. I’m delighted my Foundation’s grant means nearly four thousand children will receive free instruments and music tuition. I only wish government would join in to make it four million”.

The programme has been proven very successful in the school so far, with a growing Music Specialist School, extra-curricular programme and engagement in the Creative Curriculum and the many opportunities this has provided for pupils. We look forward to the future of the curriculum within this programme.

Frederick Bremer's Choir to Perform at the Walthamstow Garden Party on Saturday 16th July.

They will be performing on the Barbican News From Nowhere Stage at 12.30pm.

Frederick Bremer is delighted to announce that we have gained national recognition of our work to promote diversity and tackle homophobia in school. We have just received the Bronze Award from the charity Stonewall declaring our school an inclusive and supportive environment for pupils from diverse backgrounds.

The Equality and Diversity pupil group has worked tirelessly throughout the year to promote human rights through assemblies and fundraising events, particular during LGBT History month in February and International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia in May. Frederick Bremer also attended Stonewall’s National Education for All conference on Friday 8th July, sending two pupil representatives who met LGBT role models and learnt about campaigning techniques.

Jenny Morgan, the Head of CPSHE and RS delivered a workshop on how to set up LGBT young people’s groups in schools and led a discussion panel. The day was attended by campaigners, government representatives and those passionate about fighting for Equality for all people, including MP Yvette Cooper and TV presenter Gok Wan.

RUDOLPH WALKER INTER-SCHOOL DRAMA AWARD

The Rudolph Walker Inter-school Drama Award was one of the best experiences I have had. I particularly enjoyed working with EastEnders star Nitin Ganantra. He was extremely helpful and wanted nothing but the best for us.

He worked with us on exercises that helped to build our confidence and express our emotions; so that we were able to communicate with the audience when performing.

What I have gained and learnt from this experience is that there is no ‘I’ in team and for the group to function and work properly, we all have to compromise and help each other. I have also gained more confidence, particularly when speaking in front of large audiences.

CREST AWARDS

Fermion Club girls have been investigating which flour is best for making a variety of breads. They have come up with all sorts of ways to evaluate their bread. We think the most innovative experiment was measuring how much light passes through a slice of bread as a way of measuring.

Congratulations to Melissa, Simra, Micaiah, Grace, and Jasmin who have achieved Bronze CREST Awards for their work.

TWIKENHAM RUGBY TRIP

On Wednesday 23rd March, Mr Ngo took a group of year 10 and Year 7 STEAM to a rugby match final between the university of Exeter and Loughborough at the Twickenham stadium.

To get to Twickenham we had to take the school mini bus, the ride there wasn’t too bad but we didn’t leave the school at the time we wanted to leave.

Unfortunately, we were caught in a lot of traffic as we left at around 4.00pm which was rush hour and it should’ve taken an hour to get to Twickenham by car. The journey was quite entertaining until it got to the point where everyone was tired of moving at the pace of a snail.

Once we arrived at Twickenham stadium the match was already into the second half (due to our delayed journey). The match was great fun to watch, both teams were neck and neck, it was very intense.

When the time was up, half of the stadium erupted with cheers and applause. As we made our way back to the mini bus, darkness had clearly fallen and the Year 7’s had become immensely energetic with majority of the journey back spent listening to their chatter.

To summarise it was a very enjoyable experience, the match was fun to watch and I would recommend this to other pupils next year.

YEAR 6 TRANSITION DAYS

Last week we welcomed the new Year 7 cohort to Frederick Bremer during out transition days.

The pupils enjoyed a variety of lessons including Science, Humanities, PE, English, and DT. It was a fantastic opportunity for FB teachers to meet the pupils and for the pupils to have a taste of what’s to come in in their new secondary school.

We would like to wish all of the pupils a happy summer break and the staff look forward to meeting them all again September.

ing pizza whirls with our current year 7 groups, and the next year 7 cohort on Transition Day. Many children (and various members of staff) have commented on how delicious they are and have been keen to make them at home.

1.

In a large mixing bowl, use the rubbing-in method (rubbing the fat and flour together using your fingertips) to combine the fat and flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.

They don’t take many ingredients, much money, or a lot of time to make, and are a great way to spend an hour with your family. Make them on a weekend for a stress free snack, or the night before school for a special lunchtime treat!

2.

Make a well in the middle and gradually add the milk about a tablespoon at a time, until the mixture forms a ball of dough that is moist to the touch but not sloppy.

3.

Flour your work surface and roll the dough out to roughly the size of an A4 piece of paper.

4.

Spread the tomato puree evenly on top of the dough, making sure to cover all of the dough right up the edges.

5.

Sprinkle on the cheese evenly, again making sure that you cover the dough up to the edges.

6.

Put on your toppings, the same as with the cheese and tomato puree.

7.

Carefully roll the pizza to resemble a swiss roll.

Roll tightly so as to avoid toppings spilling out from the sides.

8.

Cut the roll into slices of about 1in/2cm thick.

9.

Place each pizza whirl on its side on a greased and lined baking tray. Press the whirls down slightly to compress them.

10.

Bake in the oven for about 15-20 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and the cheese is well cooked.

Below is a simple recipe which will help you replicate the success we’ve had in the classroom.

Preparation time: 30 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes (Gas Mark 5, 200oC) Makes 6-8

Ingredients  200g self-raising flour  50g fat (butter/margarine)  100ml milk  200g grated cheese  2 tablespoons tomato puree  3 Fillings of your choice

MAKE YOUR OWN ROCKET CAR Over the summer holidays, why not try some recycling to build your own jet powered car? To make a basic model, you only need a few items, and once you’ve got the hang of it, try sprucing up your car to look good.

Here’s what you need to make your 4-Wheel Balloon Car! Jet • Balloon • Flexible straw • Rubber band or tape Body (Select one) • Water bottle • Toilet-paper/ kitchen roll tube • Juice box • Disposable cup (paper or plastic) • Ice cream container (pint or quart) Axles (Select one) • Straws • Barbeque skewers • Chopsticks

1. Make the jet a. Put the long end of a flexible straw into a balloon. b. Attach the straw and balloon so that no air can escape, using either a rubber band or tape.

Wheels (Select one) • Bottle caps • CDs • Cardboard circles Connector for attaching wheels to an axle (Select one) • Dry sponge • Foam • Clay • Marshmallow (cut in half)

2. Insert two axles a. Poke two holes in the bottle’s sides, on the part of the bottle that will be the bottom of the car. Make the holes directly across from each other so the axle goes straight across. b. Slide a straw through the two holes. Adjust so the axle goes straight across. c. Repeat for the second axle. d. Slide a barbeque skewer through each straw .

3. Make the wheels a. Wedge a square of sponge (or foam or marshmallow) into a bottle cap to make a wheel. b. Make four of these wheels.

4. Add wheels a. To make it easy to push a skewer into a sponge, use the skewer’s point to poke holes in the sponges. b. Centre the holes so the wheels will spin evenly and not wobble up and down. c. Push the wheels onto the ends of the skewers.

5. Insert the jet a.

Poke a hole in the top and back of the bottle.

Push the jet into place so that the straw’s balloon end pokes out the top and the open end pokes out the back.

c.

Make sure the straw at the back is as parallel to the floor or table top as possible. If it points up, down, or to the side, your car won’t move as fast or far as if the jet points straight back.

6. Power the jet a.

Blow up the balloon by blowing through the straw.

b.

Put your finger over the end of the straw to stop air from escaping.

c.

Put the car on a smooth surface. Then let go. ZOOM!

Other piercings (i.e. nose studs, tongue studs) and any visible tattoos are not permitted; these will be considered to be a serious breach of the behaviour policy.

Hairstyles should be suitably formal and not draw unnecessary attention to the pupil. Significant hair colouring or shaving of hair (including patterns) is not permitted.

Watches are encouraged.

The above is not an exhaustive list as there will always be new fashion trends and fads. Pupils should always aim to dress in a formal professional way and any new inappropriate uniform issues will be addressed promptly by the school if necessary.
