South East Faversham is large mixed-use development that provides employment, housing and schools to the local area. Clague Architects are working with Ben Pentreath Architects on Phase 1 of the project. It was very important that the houses are designed to be beautiful and high-quality, complementing the unique historic character and identity of Faversham, Kent. We completed a intensive study of the local character in Faversham which is expressed in our design.

02 Clague Architects

Rotherfield, Kent

Rotherfield is a large housing development in Kent. Like many of the projects at Clague Architects we took a landscape led approach to create a subtle masterplan that celebrates the view through to St Denys Church. The housetypes are inspired the local kentish vernacular. Hand drawings at Clague are strongly encouraged and help create a much softer approach when designing in sensitive areas, especially the countryside.

03 Clague Architects

Chelsfield Hall Farm, Bromley

The proposal for this project is to create six new plots that reinstate the historic fabric of the farm. The historic farm house locate to the south of the site is Grade II listed along with the neighbouring stable, both of these structures are to be retained and refurbished to make appropriate homes. The rest of the structures have been carefully designing using precedents from other traditional kentish barns. The view to the farm house has been retained along with the historic ‘lose’ courtyard.

Case Study House 22

Modern House, Stage 1 University

Possibly one of the most photographed houses in the world, the Case Study House 22, or otherwise known as the Stahl house, stands as a true monument to the Californian dream. Located on a cliff edge in Los Angles, the Stahl house is a daring design that captivates the attention of Architects, photographers and designers from around the world because of the buildings perilous yet beautifully simplistic presence.

The Stour Brewery

Architecture and Landscape, Stage 2 University

Located in Canterbury, this projects primary focus was to design a landscape suitable for growing fresh produce as well as designing a building that used this produce to create and sell a product. I decided to design an ale and larger brewery accompanied by a public hop garden. The form of the brewery was inspired by the Kentish vernacular, more specifically the structure of the traditional Oast house. The central tower of my design is complimented by two contrasting wings, one housing the industrial equipment and the other housing the commercial area. Each activity influences the building’s exterior appearance.

The Castle Street Development

Collective Dwelling, Stage 2 University

The Castle Street development was a project to provide multi-generational housing to an area of Canterbury that surrounds itself with significant historical context. My concept involved integrating the living areas for the young and old residents, encouraging community by bridging the large age divide that presents itself in society. I studied the Roman viaducts scattered throughout Kent for inspiration of how to ‘frame’ different activities carried out by different age groups.

Life on Piers

Urban Intervention, Stage 3 University

Perfugium miseris is the Latin motto carved into the Georgian lighthouse, at the end of the western harbour arm located in Ramsgate. The phrase translates to “refuge for those in need”. This historic engraving was the inspiration for this project. Life on piers created 100 temporary homes for refugees fleeing to England via the English Channel. The small timber living units are situated on rails allowing the to slide freely up and down the piers. This idea enables one living unit to join with another creating larger living spaces. This was to ensure families are not split up when being assigned temporary housing.

The small living units are able to join together to create large living spaces for families. The dynamism that this type of architecture presents is a celebration of the diversity that Ramsgate is lacking. The melancholy shell of a once thriving seaside town creates an opportunity that encourages a fresh start for refugees looking for a chance to integrate back into society.

The Mencap Centre

Building Design, Stage 3 University

By adapting an existing car park located on Ramsgate’s Sea front, I designed a new day centre for the charity East Kent Mencap. This charity works with people who have learning disabilities, by encouraging them integrate into society. My design incorporates flexible spaces that allow different activities to occur, teaching new valuable skills to those who have learning disabilities. This project explored the buffer between public and private spaces.

10 Modunite

Architectural Visualisation, Canterbury.

Modunite was set up to produce high quality and affordable architectural visualisations. Being a relatively small company, I was able to build relationships with clients ensuring they are satisfied with their final renders. This job was a fantastic opportunity to work on real life projects that had a deadline and specific requirements that needed to be met. I gained valuable experience in using Revit and Twinmotion along with other software.
