In His Steps: Passionate Prayer

Dr. Chris Montgomery | Psalm 127:1-2 | Aug. 3, 2025

Our theme from 2020 to 2025 has been unity.

Why have we focused so much on unity?

(Psalm 133:1-3) Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.

What do we mean when we say unity?

Unity in our faith in Jesus Christ and our commitment to His mission.

Where are we going?

(Psalm 127:1-2) Unless the Lord builds a house, its builders labor over it in vain; unless the Lord watches over a city, the watchman stays alert in vain. In vain you get up early and stay up late, working hard to have enough food— yes, he gives sleep to the one he loves.

How do we become a River Church for the River Region? It all starts with prayer!

(Exodus 33:15) If Your Presence does not go with us, Moses replied, do not lead us up from here.

Why does being a River Church for the River Region have to start with prayer?

1. Being a multi-generational church is complicated.

2. Being a multi-ethnic church is complex.

3. Being a church that multiplies disciples is commanded.

I pray because I can’t help myself. I pray because I’m helpless. I pray because the need flows out of me all the time, waking and sleeping. It doesn’t change God. It changes me.

To pray is to accept that we are, and always will be, wholly dependent on God for everything. Timothy Keller
