Pack-free: Camping This fully inclusive self-guided, supported, hike provides a glamping like experience for hikers who want to enjoy the thrills of camping, without carrying a heavy backpack. This hike includes all meals, snacks, drinks and a support guide who drops equipment off and assembles tents at the camps nightly.

We offer 2 day and 3 day options with this pack-free eco hike.

Adventure Hiking A fully self-guided hike through diverse terrain and forest, as hikers guide their way through some of the most iconic sights of the Fraser Island Great Walk Track. Why hike Fraser Island?

Fraser Island (K’gari), located just off the east coast of Queensland, Australia, is the largest sand island in the world and is recognised as an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is the only place in the world where majestic rainforest grows on sand, making the island landscape diverse and unique. The island is also home to half of the world’s perched freshwater lakes, offering perfect swimming locations.

Being able to explore the island on foot offers an incredibly unique perspective to see and experience this magnificent landscape with flourishing flora and fauna. With 4wd access to the Great Walk Track system, hikers get the opportunity to see the best of Fraser Island’s beautiful tall rainforests, crystal clear freshwater lakes, shifting sand-dunes and magical ocean views. Why hike with us?

Fraser Island Hiking is the only company on Fraser Island to offer supported hiking, with permits to support hikers along the Fraser Island Great Walk track system and walkers camps. Through our experience and knowledge of Fraser Island we have developed tailor made hiking packages to suit all types of hikers, ranging from 12 years (accompanied) up to 60+ years.

Our team is committed to preserving the environment and reducing our ecological footprint. We proudly hold an Eco Certification from Eco Tourism Australia, one of our priorities when setting up this experience. We aim to create a sustainable walking experience, while minimising the impact on the Island environment and its ecosystems.

We take safety first. This is why all of our hikes require a minimum of 2 hikers. Solo hikers are encouraged to find other solo hikers to walk with, or we will pair people enquiring up with other solo walkers, or groups. All of our hikes run during the Queensland hiking season from March to October, unless stated otherwise. This is due to safety risks, as the summer months pose serious fire danger which can result in track closures.

We know first hand the difficulties of getting around Fraser Island. That is why we have a range of reliable 4wd vehicles to get our walkers to the start and end of the track (depending on the hike) to ensure they have a seamless and stress free trip.

Pack-Free: Camping Hikes self-guided, supported, camping

This self-guided, supported, hike provides a glamping-like experience for hikers who want to enjoy the thrills of bush camping, without carrying a heavy backpack. Hikes carry only a small day bag while walking, making the experience more relaxed. The support guide drops off and sets up all camping equipment and helps to prepare dinner!

Walk Overview Walk, pack-free through lush tropical rainforests, experience the untouched Fraser Island bush and relax in the sparkling waters of Lake McKenzie, as you enjoy the tranquil beauty of Fraser Island’s iconic central loop.

Experience the key sights of Fraser Island on this short 2 day, 1 night walk offered twice a week, all year! This hike is a great way to get away and spend a weekend in the tranquillity of Fraser Island’s untouched bush. Explore the central part of Fraser Island’s Great Walk and experience some of the most iconic sights. Traverse via world famous Lake McKenzie, swim in the sparkling blue waters, experience the serenity of Basin Lake, meander along the pristine waters of Wanggoolba Creek and see the ancient ferns, a remnant of a past world. At night, camp under the towering rainforest giants at the Central Station walkers camp. Be wondered by the magic of Pile Valley and the giant Satinay trees growing on sand, a phenomenon not seen elsewhere. Observe the enthralling view from the lookout of Hammerstone Sandblow, emerald Lake Wabby and the Eastern beach, before embarking on the last part of the walk via Lake Wabby to Fraser Island’s famous 75 Mile Beach.

Hike Overview Hike pack-free along Fraser Island’s Southern section of the Great Walk. Experience five of Fraser Island’s most beautiful pristine freshwater lakes on this Eco Hiking Adventure.

Have a real eco adventure on this fully supported 3 day and 2 night hike. Be transferred to the starting point of the track in comfort with a private 4wd transfer. Experience bliss in the wilderness, admiring kauri pines, staghorn, and palm lilies, while walking through spectacular towering forests. Stroll along coloured sand flats on Lake Boomanjin’s north-western beach. Hike through scribbly gum woodland and open forests via Wongi Sandblow, with spectacular views of the Eastern Beach. Hike Overview Walk under forest giants from location to location, while exploring sights such as incredible sand blows, 1000 year old trees in the Valley of the Giants and incredible freshwater creeks and lakes.

Embark upon an amazing, fully supported hike and experience the most remote areas of Fraser Islands Great Walk. This hike meanders through lush tropical rainforest and under some of the largest living trees on the island, in the spectacular Valley of Giants.

Hikers camp fully supported in the remote Valley of the Giants walkers camp, serenity interrupted only by the chatter of birds and the whispers of the treetops. Hikers also have the option to visit the oldest accessible tree on the island, the Giant Satinay, over 1000 years old. On the way to Lake Garawongera, walk through rainforest along Bogimbah Creek and stop and see historical sites of Petries Camp and Dipuying Nursery. Immerse in Lake Garawongera for a refreshing swim in the tea-tree infused lake. Experience the views at Bagjala Sand Blow, freshwater Wangoolba creek in Central Station, the Queens Canopy in Pile Valley, crystal clear water at Lake McKenzie and the famous 75 Mile Beach.

What is included? ▶ All meals and drinks (breakfasts, lunches, dinners, snacks and nibbles, complimentary glass of red, white wine or beer with dinner), water will be available to refill walkers bottles in camp. ▶ Barge transfer to the Island and 4wd transfers. ▶ On the ground support guide, set up tents and carry/ drop-off overnight bags at camp. ▶ Camp set up and meal preparation. ▶ National Park permits and fees. ▶ Hervey Bay accommodation pickups. ▶ Tents and equipment - sleeping bags, comfy sleeping mats, pillows & pillow slip. ▶ Detailed information - hiker information, safety briefing, maps and itineraries, walkers camp permits included. ▶ Free street parking (secure parking for fee) and storage of larger bags at the office.

What should I bring? ▶ Suitable walking/ hiking shoes. ▶ Small overnight bag (transferred by the guide) - containing belongings needed at the hikers camps for night use. This could include: sleeping bag liner, warm overnight clothes, pillow (we provide a pillow and slip), easy dry towel, spare change of clothes.

No suitcases - soft bags only. ▶ Day pack with essentials - to be carried during the day, this could include: camera, phone, swimmers/pack towel, torch, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, insect repellent, reusable water bottle to carry water during the day approx. (1.5 ltr), or a water reservoir. ▶ Prescription medication and general medication if needed. ▶ Portable charger to charge phone/ camera as there will be no access to electricity on the island. ▶ Torch - head torch is recommended (we provide small lanterns around camp).

Other Information? ▶ Not included: Alcohol (other than complimentary wine provided), toiletries, food items not listed above. ▶ Hike departs from our office in Urangan, Hervey Bay, at approx. 7am for a hiker information session and then a 4wd transfer to the Island. ▶ Pre-arranged pick-up available from hostels/ hotels in Urangan. ▶ The 4wd transfer goes from the Fraser Island Hiking office to the River Heads Barge and then onto Fraser Island to the start of the hiking destination. ▶ Some hikes are seasonal and only offered in the cooler months (March to October) due to track closures in the summer. ▶ All hikes run once a week, but can be tailored to a specific date for a group of 4-6 people wanting to book. Please contact us and ask what is available!

More than 30 days: full refund, less the cost of any credit card merchant fees.

Hiking on Fraser Island is subject to the Fraser Island Great Walk hiking tracks being open, based on a precipitation level - due to fire safety. This is monitored by Queensland National Parks, as they can close the hiking tracks with little notice especially in the warmer months of November to March. Therefore we only run this hike from March to October to ensure safety and confirmation of tracks. ▶ In the event of a track closure or dangerous weather conditions, beyond our control, Fraser Island Hiking will offer a full refund or an alternative option, such as the 2 Day Lake McKenzie Eco Hike which runs all year round.

Food & Menu Produce The best quality fresh produce and ingredients are sourced locally in season. We take care to provide healthy meals for our walkers and cater for many dietary needs upon request. Delicious hearty meals and snacks provide you with all the energy required to sustain you on your walking adventure. We take care when selecting meals to ensure that a healthy meal is available to walkers!

Menu We offer a range of menu options for breakfast, lunch and dinner which may differ depending on the hike length.

Breakfast Yogurt (v - coconut yogurt), fresh fruit, muesli, porridge or cereal, milk (dairy, soy, almond on demand) and a selection of teas, coffee and juice.

Morning tea (on the trail) A selection of banana bread, trail mix, fresh fruit, energy snacks and juice.

Lunch (pre-packed) A mix of sandwiches and wraps with a mix of high protein options (meat/ falafel etc.) fresh salad and condiments.

Afternoon tea (at camp) Cheese, crackers, dip, fruit platter, assorted drinks.

Dinner A high protein and carb dish, such as a pasta dish (pesto chicken and/ or mushroom) or curry with rice (massaman curry, beef or tofu).

Complimentary glass of wine (red/ white) and beer.

Vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and other dietary options available (please ask in advance). Please not this is a guide only and menu items may change or be temporarily unavailable.

Adventure Hikes self-guided experience ​n adventure hike is a self-guided A hiking experience, with no guided help or support, for adventurers who want a unique experience! It’s a great way to experience the true beauty of Fraser Island your way.

We offer three unique adventure hikes, varying in length and complexity, tailed to show you the diversity of Fraser Island.

Hikers carry 70Lt hiking packs with all food and utilities (e.g. tents, cookers).

Include a 4wd transfer to the pickup and or drop off locations.

Does not include any guided help or support throughout the hike.

Itinerary DAY 1 - 7km + optional walks • 8:00am - take a 4wd transfer from Hervey Bay via the barge to the Eastern Beach of Fraser Island, to the access track at Poyungan Valley.

• Enjoy a lunch stop before hiking 7km through gradual rainforest as the track descends into the Valley of the Giants.

• Once you have arrived, set up camp, before undertaking some of the sidewalks.

• Optional side walks to the big trees; ​Giant Satinay, 7.2km return or Giant Tallowwood, 2.6km return DAY 2 - 16.1km • Wake up nice and early and traverse through the rainforest, on the 16km walk to Lake Wabby.

• Take a lunch stop at the Budjala Sandblow (additional 1.2km sidewalk return), enjoy scenic views out onto the Eastern Beach.

• Keep walking as you hike through dense tropical forest before arriving at the Lake Wabby lookout and walkers camp. Set up camp and go for an afternoon swim in Lake Wabby and walk on the endless sand dunes.

DAY 3 - 12km (optional 22.8km) • Wake up early (5:30/6am) for sunrise at the lookout and see the sun rise over the eastern beach, with spectacular colours and views.

• Spend the day hiking through untouched rainforest and old ancient eucalypt forest, to the beautiful Lake McKenzie, distance is approximately 12km.

• Optional - take a challenge and complete the 22km option via Pile Valley, Central Station and Basin Lake.

• Once at Lake McKenzie, set up camp and enjoy a splash in the lake at sunset.

DAY 4 - 13.8km • Spend the morning swimming at Lake McKenzie, also known by its indigenous name ‘Lake Boorangoora’.

• Enjoy the serenity of the secret hikers beach and have lunch at fenced, picnic enclosures near the lake.

• 1:00PM hike from Lake McKenzie to Kingfisher Bay Resort enjoying the peaceful and calm natural bush. Stop by a historical site: McKenzie’s Jetty.

• Arrive at the Kingfisher Bay by 4:00pm, enjoy a refreshing drink and snack.

• Relax by stunning emerald Lake Wabby for a swim or go to the lookout and enjoy a scenic view of the vast Eastern Beach.

• Set up camp and spend the first night camping under the stars at Lake Wabby hikers camp!

DAY 2 - 12km (optional 22.8km) • Wake up early (5:30/6am) for sunrise at the lookout and see the sun rise over the eastern beach, with spectacular colours and views.

• Have a light breakfast and pack up camp ready for the next destination.

• Spend the day hiking through untouched rainforest and old ancient eucalypt forest, to the beautiful Lake McKenzie, distance is approximately 12km.

• Optional - take a challenge and complete the 22km option via Pile Valley, Central Station and Basin Lake.

• Once at Lake McKenzie, set up camp and enjoy a splash in the lake at sunset.

• Walk the first 6.3km through the forest to Lake Boomanjin, where you can enjoy lunch and a swim.

• Finish the afternoon with a 7.2km hike to Lake Benaroon.

Where you can enjoy a sunset swim and prepare your dinner.

• Set up camp and spend the first night camping at Lake Benaroon hikers camp.

DAY 2 - 14km • Wake up early and have a hearty breakfast.

• Hike 7.5km, via Lake Birrabeen to Central Station where you can enjoy your lunch and a walk through the rainforest.

• Take the optional 4km return walk through Pile Valley.

• Finish your afternoon with a 6.6km walk to Lake McKenzie, via Basin Lake.

• Once at camp enjoy an afternoon swim and a surreal sunset at Lake McKenzie.

• Set up camp and spend the night under the stars at Lake McKenzie hikers camp.

• Hike departs from our office in Urangan, Hervey Bay. • Departure time approx. 8am (subject to change).

• Pickups available if you have pre-arranged - conditions apply, hotel/ hostel in Urangan only.

• 4wd transfer departs certain weekdays, unless 4+ people, we will run a private transfer.

• At times there are NO toilet facilities and human waste must be buried at least 50cm deep.

• Fresh water is available at each camp but may have to be treated first.

• Only some campsites are fenced from dingoes.

Terms & Conditions • Minimum 2 hikers (for safety) • Full payment required to secure booking • Hiking on Fraser Island is subject to the Fraser Island Great Walk hiking tracks being open, based on a precipitation level - due to fire safety. This is monitored by Queensland National Parks, as they can close the hiking tracks with little notice especially in the warmer months of November to March. Therefore we only run this hike from March to October to ensure safety and confirmation of tracks.

• In the event of a track closure or dangerous weather conditions, beyond our control, Fraser Island Hiking will offer a full refund or an alternative option (such as a 2 Day Lake McKenzie Eco Hike, cost may apply).

• Customer cancellations less than 7 days prior to the hike date are not refundable cancellations more than 7 days will get a full refund (private transfers, for 5+ people, will incur a $50 cancellation admin fee.

Frequently Asked Questions When and where do the hikes depart?

All hikes depart from Hervey Bay, 6 Southern Cross Circuit Urangan, near the airport How many people will be on the hike?

Hikes can vary from 2 to 6 people. Private transfers require a minimum of 4 people and a levy may apply.

What level of fitness is required to participate in the walks/ hikes?

Average to Moderate fitness required for 2 and 3 day hikes and advanced experienced walking required for the 4 day hike. Please note that for adventure hikes, walkers must carry all their own equipment, so hiking experience is recommended.

What is the difference between the adventure hikes and the pack-free hikes?

Adventure hikers take a 70litre hiking pack with all equipment and food, they have a transfer to the trail head and a pickup at the other end but no support during the hike. Pack-free hiking is a camping experience where you can enjoy camping in the wilderness but not have to carry the equipment or worry about the food as all this is done by the support guide.

What do I need to bring?

Please see the what to bring section of each hike. Adventure hikes and Pack-free hikes include different things, so please check this.

Is hiking on Fraser Island safe?

Yes, especially with a support guide or a transfer as we know where our hikers are and have emergency plans in place should something happen. Hiking is not recommended for single walkers, therefore all our hikes always run with a minimum of 2.

What happens in the event of wet weather?

We have a mild wet weather option to base camp in Central Station, however in the event of really bad weather and torrential rain we would have to cancel the hike.

Can I do a Pack-free hike that covers the whole of the Great Walk?

Yes, we can offer both our 3 Day pack-free hikes backing onto each other with 2 nights, 1 day down time in between staying at Kingfisher Resort. Please enquire if you are interested in this option.

Can I tailor my own hike if I have a group?

Yes we can tailor make a hike for 2 to 6 people, this is a private charter where you would only have your group on the hike and no other groups. Please note this would be priced as a charter price, not per person and would vary depending on length etc.

Are there age restrictions for the walk?

There is an age limit of 12 years and over. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. There are no upper age restrictions for walkers with suitable ability, however walkers with medical conditions should check with the operator before booking.

What will the weather conditions be like?

The climate of Fraser Island is subtropical, with warm daytime temperatures throughout the entire year. The winter months are from May to August, where the average temperatures are 14-25°C (57-77 degrees F). Winter is the drier month of the year and it is less likely that you will see much rainfall during walking season. If it does rain it’s generally short showers.

Do you offer any other hikes staying in accommodation?

Yes we offer the Best of the Great Walk, a 4 day and 3 night luxury hike, staying at Waiuta Retreat at Kingfisher Bay, please check the Best of the Fraser Island Great Walk Product Overview for more information.

We can also offer beach house accommodation for charter groups, subject to availability.
