The death of Michael Jackson shook the entire world and many of us are still recuperating from that. With that news it looked like Hollywood stood still. When the world did eventually move forward, news broke out about several new films such as films from Forest Whitaker, Will Smith’s daughter Willow Smith (and Smith has a new film too), an update from the new George Lucas film about the Tuskegee Airmen, and more. Plus we have the latest info from the 2009 BET Awards and the responses that many of you submitted about the show.

Probably best know for his very infamous scene in This Christmas being beat with a belt by actress Regina King after taking a shower, Laz Alonzo has made many films and his star continues to rise. We have a sit down with this rising star and we ask him just what makes him Hollywood’s newest top dogs, and how is star is rising so far and so fast.

What a huge 30 days it has been for us in the entertainment industry. From the death of an icon in Michael Jackson to the closing of VIBE Magazine, we have all seen what we thought was a lot. Even the BET Awards set some of us to leaps and bounds we never thought we would see because of the Michael Jackson issue/tribute. Personally I was touched by the services that the family of Michael Jackson did at his memorial services because I can’t remember anything that resembled such a touching moment. I am still in shock about the death, but during the services, the world literally stood still. The last time I saw that happen was the after affect of 911 had on the world as folks gathered to watch the news that day, and even then the world didn’t stop the way it did for Jackson’s services. Anyway, I humbly look ahead to the rest of the year as I take a look around me and give thanks to everyone around. As great as Michael Jackson was, even he proved that no one lives for ever and tomorrow is not promised to anyone. RIP Michael Jackson, you music will at least last forever. Red Grant is definitely one of those cats to watch out for in the next couple of years. One of my main questions is why is he being over looked? After the untimely death of Michael Jackson and the presentation of the 2009 BET Awards, we were bombarded with tons of emails about the show. Many viewers were outraged at the show, and what was presented. Here is a sample of some of the emails we received, AFTER an Exec from BET stepped forward to explain what they felt was a show that still was presented properly given the three day window period between the death of Michael Jackson and the Awards show.

I don’t think that the BET Awards should even continue to be broadcast after that show. The Lil Wayne performance alone made my skin crawl! What was he thinking?!!! In my wildest dreams if I wrote a song I would still know the words of the song every time those words came out of my mouth. But to not know those words or to act like you didn’t know them so your daughter could get up on stage with her other 12 year old friends just make me sick to my stomach! All of the pedophiles of the world now have a major video clip that they can “use”. It's interesting since when it came to performing, MJ was the consummate professional. He was so gifted, such a perfectionist and so emotionally connected to his performances, we could only strive to be like him in our wildest dreams. He commanded attention and our emotions, but this award show left so much to be desired. I have no problem with a little blue humor or things that people might find "ghetto" or not "Politically incorrect." I do think that as black people, because we have fewer avenues to showcase ourselves, when we do, what we do is magnified. We don't have as many award telecasts or sitcoms or movies that portray our lives, so when we "show up," or in the case of the BET Awards "show down," we don't have many other vehicles to refute and show an opposite way of being. On such a monumental night when one of our greatest and most influential artist's life should have been celebrated with the same level of professionalism as he exhibited, BET dropped the ball...and if Stephen Hill doesn't realize this, or cannot come to completely admit this, he's a complete idiot. Humor Mill Magazine; I just read your article on the backlash surrounding the BET Awards. I have to say, I actually hadn't watched the awards show in a few years because I just found it sub-par. When I heard they were revamping everything to pay tribute to Michael Jackson, I was so excited. I had plans Sunday night, when it initially aired, but I made it a point to rush home for the encore broadcast on Tuesday...and I just sat there with the immortal words of Ms. Whitney Houston running through my head - "Ah, hell to the no." It was horrible. I gotta speak on Jamie Foxx setting the tone with his spiel about not being able to wear the tight pants Michael did because of the "boa constrictor" he had to accommodate. What the hell?! And it got worse from there...no need to mention Lil Wayne.

The very people closest to Michael grieving days after his death. Are they really that dumb? They should have just saved the "so called" near future tribute for the near future instead creating a debauchery of the show and expecting us to just focus on the "positives" of the show. That letter was an all out "dance" around the fact that BET consistently produces mediocre and below average entertainment. I can appreciate them wanting to do the tribute, but if you're not going to do it right, why do it. This was to honor a legends memory, so why not wait a few more days and pull together a totally separate show. They would have done better just playing Michael's music during guest transitions. As for the people that didn't show, OK. For example, in church when one choir, group, minister or speaker doesn't show up there's always someone else to pull it through. Usually the substitutes make the event better. It's not who wasn't there because too many were there. BET's motto for producing that event should have been (Buy Extra Time) and just wait until you could do it right. Jahi Dezines Cleveland, OH

Speaking of comedian Gary Owen, apparently he made a holding agreement with Tyler Perry's company to headline a possible spinoff of Tyler Perry's House of Payne. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Owen, a comedian who met Perry last year on The Tom Joyner Morning Show, will continue to recur as Zach as one of the barbers in the barbershop highlighted in the series. The show is currently airing in syndication and on TBS Network. More info on this as news develops.

In other comedy news, we have detected a new film that just wrapped in the city of Detroit called Pawn Shop (written by Parrish Redd and Alfonzo Everett and executive produced by comedian Joe Torry). The film also stars Torry, Garrett Morris, Reynaldo Rey (in a cameo), Deelishis (of Flavor of Love fame) and several of Detroit's hottest comedians from BET, Def Comedy Jam, Comedy Central, Bad Boys of Comedy, and more. Comedian Reynaldo Rey was supposed to be one of the leads, but due to health issues he eventually had to be replaced by Garrett Morris. Also starring in the film are comedians Foolish, Shanie D., Mike Bonner, Bill Hill, Michael McDaniel, Cool Aide, and Crystal P. to name a few.

ABC is moving forward on the development phase of a new reality competition series, The Fast & the Funniest, described as a cross between Last Comic Standing and The Amazing Race. Page Hurwitz and Javier Winnik (Last Comic Standing) are behind the project as is Keep Calm Productions. The series will follow a group of stand-up comedians as they compete in challenges and performances around the country and the first three to reach the last city will do a comedy face-off for a cash prize. ABC's order is cast contingent and, if approved, would join the network's lineup in late midseason or next summer.
Comedic actor Nick Cannon has added another notch in his belt. Nick has gone from network executive, to rapper, to TV show host, radio show host, executive producer to now being a film director. We got word that Cannon just recently finished shooting the new film School Girls. No word yet on who else is starring in the film, which just finished off in Los Angeles. Nick Cannon

We have just discovered that comedic actor Eddie Murphy is not going to do Beverly Hill Cop 4, regardless of the internet rumors that are floating around. The reason is plainly simple; Murphy does not like the script. We can say that Director Brett Ratner is working with some writers to work the script to make another pitch to Murphy, but so far that door is closed. We can also say that Murphy loves the new script from Ratner titled Trump Heist (the movie that we mentioned months ago and is a Universal film). Murphy has agreed to star in that film as Ratner is currently trying to surround Murphy with a great cast, with actors like Sidney Poitier, Chris Tucker, and Chris Rock just to name a few. So far, no one but Murphy has agreed to star in the film but word is that Rock is officially close to signing on as well. Trump Heist has been pitched as an urban version of Ocean’s 11, and is about the employees of the Trump Tower in New York who conspire to rip off the building's residents. Stay tuned, as we will have more news on this story as it develops.

Another breaking news story we came across last week was that comedian/singer and actor Jamie Foxx is not done with his television ventures in the comedy world. He is about to launch a new comedy sketch show on MTV. So far the show is yet to be titled, but MTV says that the show is going to be pushed as the next generation of In Living Color, the show that was originally broadcast on the then new FOX network. Right now the show is currently in development, with no word YET on who will star in the show. The show is being produced by FoxxKing Entertainment. Jamie Foxx will next be seen as the Host of the 2009 BET Awards and is about to star in Law Abiding Citizen along with Gerald Butler (of 300 fame).

The big scoop that broke out all over the internet is that comedic actor The big scoop that broke out all over the internet is that comedic actor Martin Lawrence is developing an animated series for the FOX Network. The question now remains - is this true or false? We do not know for certain, but as we originally mentioned, the show is based on his experiences growing up in Washington D.C. and in Prince George's County, MD. The Hollywood Reporter wrote that the show will follow the adventures of 13-year-old Martin as he comes of age in the D.C. area. Anyway, the show is going to be produced by 20th Century Fox TV and written by Rodney Barnes, who was a co-executive producer of 'Til Death, Everybody Hates Chris and The Boondocks. Barnes, like Martin, grew up in Maryland. But that’s not all; we heard from these same news outlets that it looks like Lawrence’s production company, Runtelldat Productions, has several other projects up its sleeve - one is a single-camera series for the Starz Network revolving around an interracial family. The other show is a family comedy set at a funeral home and has not yet been picked up by any network. The interracial show is about a White guy from a trailer park who marries a well-to-do Black woman. It's based on the real-life experiences of comedian Gary Owen, the only white standup comedian to host BET's Comic View. Owens is a featured comic on the Starz program Martin Lawrence Presents 1st Amendment Stand-Up. It should be noted that word also leaked that Lawrence has begun to develop one of his successful franchise films, Big Momma’s House 3. We need to acknowledge that since this news has been passed along to us, the details of the shows are not verified, and the talent mentioned is not firmly attached to the shows. So, we are waiting to confirm from OTHER sources. We’ll get back to you with the complete story.

L-R: Doug Williams, Martin Lawrence, Dick Gregory, Buddy Lewis & Nikki Carr In case you haven’t heard by now Starz Entertainment will bring back Martin Lawrence Presents 1st Amendment Stand-up for a fourth season July 17 at 11 p.m. The 10-episode, 30 minute series will be filmed in front of a live audience at Washington, D.C.'s historic Lincoln Theatre and showcases 31 comedic talents who take a more raw approach to stand-up comedy. Hosted by comedian Doug Williams, the opening episode features comedian/social activist Dick Gregory and comics Buddy Lewis and Nikki Carr amongst others. Martin Lawrence is the series Executive Producer. This past July 4th weekend was one of the best in the comedy world for marriage as several known comedians finally tied the knot! So, that being said, we have to give a big CONGRATULATIONS to comedian Rob Stapleton who married his sweetheart Sherrie Mendes and to comedian Cortnee G who married his darling Charlene Angelique McLemore Gilmore.

It doesn’t look like it love was in the air for everyone. We just discovered that comedic actor David Alan Grier and his wife Christine Kim filed for divorce, all of this is according to documents filed last Thursday in L.A. County Superior Court and put out by website TMZ.com. Kim cited irreconcilable differences according to the filing. The two were married in July 2007 and have a one-year-old daughter together.
Owen Smith is another comedian jumping in the arena of making his own DVD. Smith’s new DVD is titled Owen Smith: Anonymous and we were informed the stand up performance was just picked up and will air on the brand new BBN (Black Broadcast Network) this fall. Speaking of comedy DVDs, sources have it that Codeblack Entertainment is getting into the comedy game heavily, unlike their previous mission which was to just distribute any urban DVD. Codeblack is looking to launch a 10 - episode comedy series that will be 30 minute specials highlighting fresh new comedy faces. No word yet on what network the series will debut on, but our money is that there is a good shot of it appearing on Showtime. Codeblack also sponsors the new comedy series currently on Showtime called The All Star Comedy Jam (hosted by Cedric the Entertainer). Ed McMahon, 86, best known as Johnny Carson's sidekick for 30 years on NBC's Tonight Show, died on June 23rd at UCLA's Ronald Reagan Hospital of multiple ailments. In addition to appearing on the Tonight Show from 1962-1992 and uttering the now-famous words each night "Heeeeeeeere's Johnny!," McMahon also hosted the syndicated talent show Star Search from 1983-1995. McMahon was a prolific host of television specials over the years from The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade to America's Junior Miss Pageant and for 15 years cohosted the yearly Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon. McMahon made a multitude of appearances on television series playing himself and also co-hosted TV's Bloopers and Practical Jokes with Dick Clark. His feature film credits include The Incident (1967) and Fun With Dick and Jane (1977). Bet you didn’t know that before a career in show business, McMahon enlisted in the Marines during World War II and served as a fighter pilot and later became a fighter pilot instructor and a test pilot. Later, McMahon was called back to active duty during the Korean conflict and flew 85 combat missions. He received six medals and was eventually promoted to the rank of colonel. The colossal news of the past month was the passing of singer/entertainer Michael Jackson aka the "King of Pop," who died on June 25th at the age of 50. Jackson reportedly suffered from cardiac arrest and was rushed to the UCLA Medical Center. Michael was scheduled to perform a series of 50 comeback concerts at the O2 Arena in London starting July 13 through March 2010. Tickets for these concerts were sold out within minutes of going on sale last March. Throughout his lifetime, Michael earned his nickname the King of Pop for selling an estimated 750 million records for such hits as Thriller and Billie Jean and winning 13 Grammy Awards, making him one of the most successful entertainers of all time. Michael's personal life, though, was often mired in controversy. Michael was born August 29, 1958 in Gary, Indiana, the seventh of nine children. When Michael was just 6 years old, he and four brothers - Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon first performed at a talent show and won first prize. The group went on to become The Jackson 5, to great notoriety, fame and accolades. Michael made his first solo album in 1972, which was followed ten years later by the album Thriller which became a huge hit generating seven top 10 singles and selling 21 million copies in the US alone. Michael left behind three children: Prince Michael I, Paris Michael and Prince Michael II.

The Fox Searchlight Pictures film also stars Regina King, Carlos Mencia, America Ferrera, Lance Gross, Charlie Murphy and others. Whitaker stars in this clash-of-cultures comedy depicting two overbearing dads who must put aside their differences to plan the wedding of their son and daughter in less than two weeks. Speaking of Forest Whitaker, rumor has it that he is about to star opposite Adrien Brody and Elijah Wood in the new thriller film titled The Experiment. The film was written by Paul Scheuring (of Prison Break fame), and he will direct. This film focuses on a group of men who are recruited to be placed in prison for a psychological research study. Some land jobs as guards, others are locked up as prisoners, all with the intent of studying how they react to their assigned roles and to positions of power and control. The experiment goes sour as the guards go drunk with power, developing authoritarian tendencies going to great Garyand Anthony lengths to hide their abusive actions from the researchers in Williams order to keep their power trip going. The prisoners also band together in order to resist the terror of the guards. Whitaker will play a corrupted guard while Brody plays a rebellious prisoner. Filming is under way in Iowa.

Nichell Nichols Long time actress Nichelle Nichols, probably best known for her role as Lieutenant Uhura in the Star Trek franchise, has just joined a new sci-fi comedy web series called The Cabonauts , which is a musical written by Hayden Black. The new web series is a web-only project launching in an exclusive partnership with Dailymotion. The show is set in a space cab, and will follow characters as they take various passengers to their intergalactic destinations.

Lucas’ new project is the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American pilots to fly in a combat squadron during World War II. Unlike the old movie The Tuskegee Airmen that starred Lawrence Fishburne, this film is an in depth and historical look at the actual facts during the war. The one similarity between that old film and this new one is that they both star actor Cuba Gooding Jr. This film also stars Terrance Howard, Method Man, Andre Royo, Nate Parker, Ne-Yo, Michael B. Jordan, Nate Williams, and others. New details about Will Smith were released last week announcing that Smith may be may be reuniting with Director Francis Lawrence (of I Am Legend fame). It seems that the pair is set for a new fantastical drama titled The City That Sailed by Twentieth Century Fox. The film follows a New York City street magician whose daughter, because of family circumstances, lives in England. In exploring a lighthouse one day, the girl discovers a room with magic candles and as she wishes to be reunited with her father, she causes the island of Manhattan to break away and drift. Further news as this story develops. Speaking of Will Smith, his daughter Willow Smith, will make her television debut in an upcoming, one-hour episode of Nickelodeon's True Jackson, VP. The episode stars Keke Palmer as the title character, True, and will feature flashback scenes of Willow as a younger version of True. In the hour-long episode, True finds out that she will be helping the Mad Style team create a window display for the fanciest department store in New York City. True is especially excited about this assignment since it has been her childhood dream. The only problem is that True and her friends Lulu (Ashley Argota) and Ryan (Matt Shively) are all headed back to school for a new year and True quickly discovers that balancing her school life and her work responsibilities is harder than she thought. True's father finally has to intervene after she gets detention, threatening to make her quit Mad Style if she does not ace her upcoming oral report for school. Meanwhile, Amanda's (Danielle Bisutti) polar opposite--and very pleasant--twin sister Lisa Marie comes to visit the office and Max (Greg Proops) is distressed that his ex-fiance has come back into his life to try and steal him away from Doris.

We just learned that Black Entertainment Television (BET) has acquired broadcast rights to the award winning feature film The Mansfield 12 which was the winner of the 2007 American Black Film Festival independent film award. Mansfield 12 is directed by Craig Ross, Jr and produced by Michael Kimbrew. The film stars Tony Todd (of Candyman fame), Joe Torry and Thom Barry. This powerful movie has been compared to Shawshank Redemption as it follows the lives of 12 Black men incarcerated in Mansfield state prison who bond together to overcome the agony and pain of being imprisoned for crimes they did not commit. Paramount Home Video will distribute the DVD.
Joe Torry Actor Mario Van Peebles is back at directing again. Apparently Peebles has a new project with actor Michael Clarke Duncan. Duncan will star opposite Morgan Simpson in a new indie drama titled Bailey. Simpson wrote the script and will play the title character in this film centering on spiritual redemption against the backdrop of Memphis blues. Production will begin in August in Nashville, TN.

The new film Grown Ups has added yet another former cast member of Saturday Night Live to its lineup of talent. To us, it really looks like a Saturday Night Live film. We hear that comedic actor Tim Meadows joins former "SNL" colleagues Adam Sandler, Maya Rudolph, Rob Schneider, David Spade, Chris Rock, Norm Macdonald, Tim Herlihy and Colin Quinn in this ensemble comedy about high school friends who get together 30 years after graduation.
We just got word there is a new reality show being developed for television. Once again the VH1 Network is launching this comedy reality series with Hip Hop legend Sandra “Pepa” Denton of the infamous group Salt-N-Pepa. As you know, Salt-N-Pepa is a Grammy Award-winning group from Queens, New York that came onto the music scene in 1985. Salt-N-Pepa sold over 15 million albums and singles worldwide and is one of the top selling rap acts amongst males and females. Well now fast forward to 2009 - Cheryl "Salt" James is married and a Born Again Christian while her partner Pepa is still single and searching for love. In steps VH1 with a real-life comedy featuring eight 30 minute episodes about Pepa searching for love. The show is set to premiere in the fall.

Where do I begin to pay honor and respect to a man that we as society, as a country and as a people deemed the King. Michael Jackson, the icon, the legend, the honorary man who graced us with music, style and history is gone. As the tears stream down my face and my heart skips a beat, I’m saddened. I should be joyous and ready to celebrate on demand but my mind won’t rest. The media is having a field day with how bizarre his lifestyle was, how he was addicted to pain killers, who’s going to get custody of his children, I mean the list goes on. Michael Jackson is and will forever be recognized for breaking down barriers and inspiring artist’s and musicians by his influential music, rhythm and dance. When the BET Network learned of Michael Jackson’s passing they immediately made changes and revised the whole 2009 BET Awards ceremony in his honor, as they should. It was only right to honor the greatest man in music and in doing so able to celebrate his life. New Edition opened The 2009 BET Awards paying tribute to Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5 by singing “I want you back”. The title said it all and the exceptional performance had everyone smiling, dancing and clapping in their seats. It was needed and ever so appropriate. New Edition proved that they still got it going on and presented a fantastic grand opening. As Jamie Foxx hosted this historical tribute, he was sensitive to what the world had just experienced and humbled when presented with an award for “Blame It”, dedicating it to Jackson. Ne-Yo looked rather ivy league and carried a sophisticated look about him as he performed “Lady in my life”. Beyonce looked immaculate and emulated an angel gracing the stage in honor of the late and great M.J. When Skank Robbers was introduced as something to look forward too, I think everyone just fell out laughing; we all needed that comedic relief. In my eyes it doesn’t get any funnier than Wanda and Sheneneh! Wyclef Jean and Alicia Keyes were the recipients of the 2009 Humanitarian Award for their efforts in bringing awareness to famine relief, changing people’s lives through the Keep a Child Alive Foundation and making a huge impact on the world. Even though Don Cornelius is well respected and loved throughout our community, his rambling and illogical behavior was dreadful. Soul Train is legendary and we appreciate Don Cornelius and somehow feel the need to give him a pass. He’s an older gentlemen and with all do respect BET should have intervened and played some music, went to commercial, I mean any kind of interruption would have been a salvation. Ving Rhames was a complete disgrace and for a minute I questioned his sanity. Why would he ever scream out to the audience “repeat after me, gun Michael Jackson. Gun BET Awards”. I’m so confused and so disappointed that he would even attempt to come on stage live with that sort of erratic behavior. While we’re on the topic of catastrophe, Keith Sweat and Guy should never be allowed to perform again. In the eyes of everyone who watched them struggle to hit notes and recreate what was once R&B at its best was just a shameful mess. On a lighter note and much more pleasing to the ears and eyes Johnny Gill, Tyrese and Trey Songz performed a tribute to the O’Jays. Their dance moves were a replica of art and familiarity. The O’Jays were presented with the 2009 Lifetime Achievement Award and went on to so elegantly perform “Used to be my girl” and “Back Stabbers”. These Motown greats were the epitome of the classic old school era and brought back the original soul and essence of music. During her duet with Keyshia Cole, Monica lit the stage on fire and rocked the song as if it were on her album. Jay-Z performed Death of the auto-tune reminding us that he may possibly be the greatest rapper alive. My heart broke when Janet Jackson approached the stage. She reminded the world that Michael Jackson although a great entertainer to us was family to her. It was heart wrenching to see her struggling with the grief and the sadness in her eyes. BET CEO Debra Lee ended the Award Show speaking on behalf of the producers and the entire BET staff explaining that they only had three days to revise the nature of the show after learning of M.J’s passing. She expressed her sentiments and emotion calling Michael Jackson an incomparable global icon. It’s amazing to think that Michael Jackson will never be surpassed, a phenomenon in his own rite creating magic every time he touched the stage. My hope for Michael Jackson is peace. After a lifetime of performing and being considered the greatest entertainer of all time, he’s finally able to rest. Of course his soul will never die and Thriller will never be forgotten. There can only be one. Often imitated but never duplicated I pay homage to the Original King of Pop. I love you Michael Joseph Jackson, may you eternally rest in peace.

Due to the overwhelming response from our readers and viewers over of the supposed Michael Jackson tribute at the 2009 BET Awards, and due to the major uproar being steered towards the network, we reached out to BET for a response and got one from a very high level executive at BET.

If you have not heard by now, an open letter was written to the network by Director and Activist Byron Hurt and it has been posted on several major websites. Hurt complained about many things, from the performances, specifically Lil’ Wayne’s to much more. He states in his letter that “it’s sad and unfortunate that your network, owned by Viacom, continues to crank out mediocrity and perpetuate negative stereotypes of black men, women, and children.” The letter has continued to circulate around the internet, and finally has garnered a response from the Executive who wishes to remain anonymous.

The Exec does address many of the concerns you e-mailed us about. First and foremost, he responds to the lack of attendance from certain people who were not present for the BET Awards, which was also to give tribute to Michael Jackson as he had passed away two days earlier. He states, “Berry Gordy, Diana Ross... too distraught to make live public appearances. Usher, Omarion, Justin [Timberlake]... all in Europe. At the end of the day, not everyone can adjust their schedules or emotions.
However it should be noted that we [BET] did not call Janet [Jackson] to participate; we respected their call for privacy. Her folks called us and we are honored... and are proud to say that the family enjoyed our upbeat, humorous, heartfelt tribute. That’s what matters.” On the performances, especially Lil Wayne’s, the Exec continues by saying, “… we appreciate the support of folks and are proud to have done this show, and pay tribute to Michael Jackson and salute regular folks doing super-regular things; The three doctors from Newark... Mayor James Young from Philadelphia, MS, and the folks from Food From The Hood who are growing and selling their own vegetables... and making money for their college education. There was really so much positive in this show that I wish folks would focus on. If it helps, we fully admit the girls on Young Money was unplanned and regrettable. Wayne's heart was in the right place, trying to please his daughter, even if the execution wasn't.” It should also be noted that the Executive has assured us that BET plans to produce a show dedicated to Michael Jackson in the very near future.
Due to the fortuitous generosity of a stranger earlier in the day, I had the pleasure of sitting in the second row of the balcony and watching the 2009 BET Awards show in the evening. I laughed, I got teary-eyed, I danced, I cheered. As I exited the hot Strand Theater and entered the cool Los Angeles evening air, I felt pretty good. The ballerina who performed with Ne-Yo was graceful, beautiful, mesmerizing without dropping it like it was hot. There were a few moving tributes to “everyday” Black people who were making a difference by staying positive and pursuing their ambitions. I was on my feet during the old school performance featuring Keith Sweat. And Maxwell brought sexy back with his performance. Of course, there were a few moments that made me uncomfortable: Jamie Foxx’s declaration to the 10 million viewers that the next segment wasn’t ready did not quite rise to the level of couth one would expect from a seasoned entertainer. And I gave up on trying to decipher the significance of the tiara, leotard and wings in Beyonce’s performance while I was watching it. Lil’ Wayne and Drake performing “I wish I could f*ck every girl in the world” as they were surrounded by dancing, overly made up preteens was in poor taste. Overall, though, I thought BET put on a good show. But almost everyone who watched the show on television disagrees. I’ve heard “hot ghetto mess,” “trash,” “tacky” - and those are just the mild criticisms- used to describe the 2009 BET Awards. One resounding sentiment has been “if BET couldn’t do the Michael Jackson tribute right, then they should not have done it at all. They should have just left it alone.” But of course a network “dedicated” and targeted to people of color could not have simply left it alone. The greatest entertainer known to the modern world had just unexpectedly died. And, despite his best efforts to erase what everyone in the entire world already knew, Michael Jackson was a Black man. If BET had not changed the format of the show, there would have been an even louder chorus of outrage. So the Network proceeded with the delicate task of rearranging a large scale production that had been planned for months with a tribute to the “King of Pop” within 48 hours. This type of monkey wrench would likely befuddle an HBO or a CBS, so imagine the impact on a network of BET’s caliber. Sadly, the Network has always lacked a certain polish and sophistication. The general format of its programming is watered down, less glossy versions of MTV and VH1 programming. The movies that air tend to be of the urban (translation: ghetto) genre. And since their debut in 2001, I have never been able to make it past the first half hour or so of any previous BET Awards show. More than one week after his death, the world watched a Michael Jackson Memorial that was admittedly emotionally charged, funny and replete with moving performances. But comparisons between the Memorial and the BET Awards are simply unfair. The organizers of the Memorial were not bound by the constraints of a preexisting format, doling out awards and set changes. Additionally, Memorial organizers had more than one week to assemble participants and design a program. Even if you were disappointed with the contents of the BET Awards show in its totality, an objective viewer would have to admit that there were some great performances, heart-wrenching speeches and some very positive moments in the show. Also, the perspective of those watching from home was likely tainted by the numerous commercials previewing the new “Tiny & Toya” and “Frankie” reality shows (which are mere examples of the lack of quality in BET’s existing programming). Let’s face it, even if the tribute to Michael Jackson left something to be desired, given the Network and its track record, the 2009 show was arguably the best BET Awards to date.

Laz Alonso Steps Out In Hollywood as One Of The Hottest, Newest, Top Dogs To Watch For
Every actor and comedian in the entertainment industry has a story to tell, as does everyone. Some people land in places they were meant to be instantly, while others take many, many years to get to that same point. The saying “if it’s meant to be” applies to us all, and we look at the journey of life with that same lens, and we get those results whether we want to or not. But every once in a while there is a person who stands above many because of their destiny and most importantly, because of their talent in their specific field. Michael Jordan jumped into the NBA and immediately made a name for himself as a rookie and never looked back, as did Tiger Woods and Steven Spielberg just to name a very select few. Let’s take actor Laz Alonso for example; as a black actor trying to make it in Hollywood, he has jumped in several major films such as Fast & Furious, Jarhead, Miracle At St. Anna, This Christmas, and Stomp The Yard. The amazing thing about Alonso is the time period in which he accomplished these goals, not to mention landing a major role in James Cameron’s new film Avatar. (For those of you who don’t know Cameron was the master mind director behind the original Terminator and Titanic) Not bad for an actor still new to Hollywood, and who not too long ago was an investment Banker at Merrill Lynch on Wall Street, with a BBA in Marketing from Howard University. His climb in Hollywood proves our point; his talent makes him stand head and shoulders above many, and easily makes him one of Hollywood’s newest top dogs. After all of his accomplishments in Hollywood, Alonzo will always be remembered as the guy who actress Regina King beat with a belt in the film This Christmas. That role will follow him, but not for too long because as great actors usually do, they start out as “hood icons” in a specific roleand this Christmas clearly was his-, and they great ones usually land into something else. For Alonso, that something else has finally arrived, as we said previously, he was able to secure the role in Avatar. We got a chance to speak with Alonso about this new role, plus his past roles, and his journey in the entertainment industry. You will find his answers quite interesting, especially his thoughts on Hollywood and the journey he took to get to where he is. Here is a portion of the interview we conducted; HUMOR MILL: You’re here with Humor Mill Comedy Entertainment News. This week we’re out here with Mr. Actor, big-time star now, Mr. Laz Alonso. Laz, how you doin’ today? LAZ ALONSO: I’m doing good man, thanks. Thanks for having me. HM: First question I want to ask you man, it’s been a long road in your journey of being an actor and the whole world knows that you jumped on Avatar. LA: Yep. HM: But we want to first discuss that journey to get to Avatar. LA: OK
“…My entire life it (acting) was always something that I wanted to do. I didn’t know how to do it, or how to get there. But it was something that in my heart I always felt like I had the love for it. And I just followed my heart.”
HM: So, what made you decide that you wanted to become an actor? LA: Wow, um, it’s funny because my entire life I always knew that this was a career that I wanted to do. As a child, I was an only child, you know, and I was reminiscing cuz LA barely ever gets thunderstorms. And recently we had a thunderstorm, with thunder and lightning, and I started twittering about my experience with thunder and lightning growing up. I used to be on the roof of my building growing up back in D.C. You know, ten stories up doing martial arts and fighting all of these imaginary human beings and kicking them off the roof right before a thunderstorm, and then BOW!! the rain would come down and I’d take off my shirt, you know. And that was me, like practicing for action films. Like I really felt like, you know, I was Wesley Snipes, you know, or Denzel. So my entire life it was always something that I wanted to do. I didn’t know how to do it or how to get there. But it was something that, you know, in my heart I always felt like I had the love for it. And I just followed my heart. HM: Right. So what was the first thing that made you know that acting is what I wanted to do when you . . . LA: Oh, I did a play in New York. I auditioned for a play. At the time I had just been going to acting classes. I went to this class called “The Spirited Actor” - Tracy Moore Maribel taught it. And it really just made me feel comfortable about this decision to follow this as a – at the time it was my hobby. I was working on Wall Street. And so I was doing the acting thing on evenings and weekends, auditioning for commercials here and there, and I found out about this play through the whole little acting circle, you know. The theater community in New York is real tight-knit. And I auditioned for it and I got the lead in the play. And then I became, by default, a member of this theater company. It was called “The Absolute Theater Company” and we just started doing play after play after play. The productions got bigger and bigger. We started going from off-off-off Broadway to off-off Broadway to off-Broadway and getting write-ups all over the place and started getting a buzz. And that’s when Ralph Lauren’s son, Andrew Lauren, found out about us and came to see one of our plays and he actually optioned one of our plays, which, at the time, was called “Sky”. And it ended up becoming “G” which was a story about The Great Gatsby but set in the more modern, urban, hip-hop time. And that was my first film, was “G”. Christopher Scott Cherot directed it, Off Broadway I was the lead in the play but when it got turned into a film I didn’t have any film credits so I was another character. I was the “B” line. I know I am very hard on REGGINS (If you don’t know what a Reggin is, spell if backwards), but there is a war going on outside between intelligent, educated, driven Black Americans. BET is a Reggin’s greatest weapon in their war on intelligence. The only reason that I watched this BET Crap is because of the tribute to Michael (which is all Buffoon Entertainment Television) has been bragging on since Michael went into a coma! So needless to say BET struck a mighty blow for COONERY! So in order to try and fire back, I proudly present the Top 10 Reasons the BET awards made sick. 10. The muth@$#% sound man! How in the world do you leave a night dedicated to (arguably) the greatest musician of the past 40 years up to someone who obviously took a correspondence course and got a D- in turning up microphone volume. Some of these performances sounded incredible to my imagination because I had to strain to hear them. 9. T-Pain I don’t even know where to begin. This reincarnation of Stepin’ Fetchit not only embarrassed all of us by that Waste of precious metal he calls his “BIG ASS CHAIN”. Yes I know it’s his money, but there’s a time and a place for everything, and (I know it was BET) this wasn’t it. He had a great looking Michael shirt on that no one could see because it was eclipsed by his coon medallion. Then, to add insult to injury, when accepting an award, this buffoon decided to drink out of a plastic red cup. REALLY?!? How classless! 8. Zoe Saldana Why in the world would you go out to present an award with the legendary Nichelle Nichols (The original Uhura from the Star Trek franchise) and embarrass the very legend who paved for you by telling the WORLD that Nichelle is in the restroom? That was so classless and unladylike! Yes Zoe, you can STILL GET IT, but you need some etiquette lessons. 7. Frankie and Neffie See Number 6, except for the fact that instead of having a baby by a rapper, one is the crack addicted mother of a lackluster (although good-looking-in-ahoodrat-sort-of-way) R&B singer and the other is a sister who is the black version of Khloe Kardashian (who sort of looks like the chick you wanna bang) but she’s got the shallow end of the gene pool! Horrible! 4.The Censors These idiots couldn’t bleep their way out of a wet paper bag! I counted 2 sh*ts and they beeped out hoe? 3. Debra Lee The head of BET is such a pioneer! No one thought that BET could sink any lower than Bob Johnson’s level of coonery and you proved us all wrong! Moron! I bet you think you’ve done something substantial, but you have only managed to embarrass us on an international stage due to the fact that CNN has been covering this abomination for the whole world to see! 2.The Pay It Off Show! Another attempt to bamboozle Black people. Whatever you do in BET programming, don’t encourage or empower black folks to get out of debt, just have a game show and give false hope to millions! Way to go! 1. Tiny Again! You tarnished TI’s viewers choice awards by accepting it in his honor with your broken English and off the rack House of Dereon dress. Again I encourage you to see reason #6. Honorable (Vomitable) Mentions: 3. The Baby Boy Skit It was funny for the first 2 minutes! Was Ving Rhames really drunk? If so, really sad. 2. Drake’s Performance Of Every Girl In The World This was okay until they brought those little girls onstage! How Canadian and pedophile-like of you. We tolerated that nonsense with R. Kelly and he’s a musical genius. You’re a flash-in-the-pan for now. While you’re at it, I know these coons don’t expect much of a performance but you could have at least gotten out of your seat. Especially since you’ve been playing a kid in a wheelchair for years. 1. Joe Jackson During the preshow, you were an opportunist, plugging a new record label and YOUR CHILD’S BODY ISN’T IN THE GROUND YET! You sir, disgust me more than the collective casts of all 800 seasons of College Hill. You should be ashamed!
We got a chance to see this week’s Comedian Of The Week, a comedian by the name of Larry Lancaster at a showcase in Los Angeles and we were blown away with his comedy. Point blank; this cat is funny. Now every comedian has his own style and some of them- actually most of them are trying to find there way in the comedy game when they are at Lancaster’s level. With Lancaster, it seems he is hitting his stride and waiting for the audience to catch up. Being talented is only half of the issue because Lancaster has to be able to deliver in Hollywood, hence his many trip to Los Angeles lately. Hopefully the Hollywood powers-that-be will be able to recognize his talent and give him a shot. Anyway, we got a chance to catch up with Lancaster while he made one of his many trips, and we had a quick chat on where he is with his career and what he plans on doing with comedy, whether it be behind the scenes or on stage. Here is a portion of the interview; Humor Mill: This week we have one of Baltimore’s finest on the line, Mr. Larry Lancaster. Larry how are you doing? Larry Lancaster: What’s going on peoples? What’s going on my brother? HM: Larry We just wanted to ask you a couple of questions. We know you are out here in LA doing your thing, you’re traveling, so what’s it like being a comic from Baltimore trying to make it in LA? LL: It’s exciting, and you can be apprehensive because when you are the big fish in the little pond and then you have to try and make that next step where you might see Chris Rock come in the spot or you have Mike Epps just working out, you have to measure yourself against that. But at the same time still have enough faith in your own capabilities where you are not intimidated or you know, you really don’t measure yourself against someone else’s talent. You go to basically do you. HM: The next question is- being that you used “big fish in a little pond” because it’s a perfect analogy because you are very well known in Baltimore- really, not many people don’t know who you are- but when you come out here to LA, do you find it being a little apprehensive because you find that you have to get the people and the execs to get to know you all over again? LL: Well, in a way, it’s good because a lot of times if you are out here you kind of get “over exposed” so you got a lot of people out here who may have done some big things or may have a lot of TV credits or whatever but they still haven’t really captured that what you would call that “next level” but when you are the new face, there’s almost like a “buzz” but you have to have the substance to go with it- you just can’t be new (of course). Michael Jackson’s world tour was to begin today on July 13, 2009. In honor of his music and his message, we present this humanitarian challenge written from the titles of his many, many hit songs. His was undoubtedly the the greatest show on earth because he understood that people make the world go round. With his smile brighter than 2000 watts, his unbreakable spirit seemingly as delicate as butterflies, he captured the world. Some made him out to be a smooth criminal, and while nothing is in black or white, we can understand clearly that the private man in the mirror with the public childhood wanted us to keep the faith in humanity and in love. To keep his faith alive, we’ve got to come together, get off the wall and ease on down the road that has been paved and marked by Michael’s caring footsteps that lead to a path of gratitude and giving. Can you feel it? He was workin’ day and night because he knew that with all of our individual blessings, we’ve got a good thing going! In our small way we’ve got to be there for others. He asked us, “Do you wanna be startin’ somethin’?” Can you start somethin’? Can you take one day in your life, give just a little bit of you from all the things you are and share with another? A great film is one that you leave the theatre feeling inspired or angered or sad or happy or any other range of emotion that the film was designed to create in its audience. When that happens a filmmaker is thrilled, it gives him the equivalent feeling of an NBA player rising over Lebron James and dunking in his face to win the game. At the end of the game all that player hears is the roar of the crowd and the praise from his teammates. When a filmmaker hears the oouuus and aahhhs during his film and the applause after he feels just like that player after the dunk. At least I do. It is a thrill that I want to have again. I was blessed to have heard the oouuus and aahhs, once with my hit film “Restraining Order” but to think that it may never come again is more disheartening that one could ever imagine. I have not been able to obtain funding and it depresses me because I love making films, I love entertaining audiences and it feels like I may never do it again. For me, making a film isn’t just about the money one can make, it’s about entertaining and moving my audience to various emotional levels and at the end there is a level of satisfaction that is equaled to only one other level of satisfaction which I will not mention but we all know what it is. I feel like I am on forced celibacy but from filmmaking, if that is a way to put it. I do not choose not to make my next feature film but the economy and frightened investors are the reason that I can not move forward with my film. Or is it me? I tried to make a film to show all who saw it that, on a very limited budget, I could make a quality film that audiences would enjoy, that would obtain distribution and that would make money. “Restraining Order” did all of those things (even though the distributor kept all the money, but that’s another story) and yet I’ve not been able to obtain funding for my next film, which is better than “Restraining Order”, TRUST ME on that. Is the reason why because of me and the economy or scared investors. Is it possible that I did something to someone that has stopped my Blessing of obtaining funding. I understand that obtaining funding is a Blessing, not a right. See, I try to carry myself at a high level of integrity, treating everyone with respect. I’m not perfect and I don’t run from the errors of my ways but could that be the reason why I cannot obtain funding? I pray not, but I make this declaration, if you are reading this and you know me and you feel I’ve wronged you in some manner, I am truly sorry. Real talk, I am not perfect and I may have never apologized to you but I do now via this article. You may think I am apologizing to solely to be released from the shackles that are keeping me from shooting my next film and you are right, I’m being honest but I also know despite my selfish and over aggressive ways, it’s the right thing to do and if I still do not obtain funding but you accept my apology, I’ve won a battle. It’s interesting, when a filmmaker is unable to obtain funding and doesn’t quite know the reasons why he will question himself, he will wonder if he’s out of order, out of favor, out of grace and mercy or just simply out of contacts. I question myself, and we should not question ourselves but I question myself. However, the bottom line is, I have a story to tell in the form of a feature film and I NEED HELP! I NEED MONEY TO TELL THE STORY. There is no hesitation in this next statement…My next film will go down in history as one of the greatest films made by an African American Filmmaker. The actors in it will be nominated for a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) award and it will be in your top 20 films. I make this statement not based on my strong belief in myself and my abilities but I make it based on the 3 script readings I’ve had for the film as I put it through its development stages and each time the actors and listeners all had the same feeling…”this film will be a hit if you get the funding for it” I apologize to those I need to apologize to and I seek funding from those who are able to provide Funding. $6.2Million is the budget. I am the writer and director and we will cast 2 A/B List actors. This is my plight. This is my story.

Where were you when you heard the news? I was walking home from aqua therapy when I received a text message from my ten-year old cousin, Kai. I was getting ready to dial her number to tell her that was an awful joke when the calls flooded my phone. Listening to Michael Jackson’s music over the last few days takes me back to my years in the music business. I come from a family of talented musical artists and my heart goes out to the Jackson family, friends and die-hard fans of the greatest pop star of all time. His passing seems surreal. I guess I thought he would live well into his eighties. Regardless of your opinion of the man, he possessed undeniable lyrical and musical talent. As I planned my trip to the Neverland Ranch and watched CNN, the Today show, and E! Entertainment, I tried to absorb the myriad of music. I couldn’t help but cry for the family and remember my younger days of wearing the pastel yellow sweater vest and red leather jacket with the silver zippers! I am somewhat embarrassed to admit having a greasy curl! I wanted to be MJ’s little sister. I wanted Janet’s role on Good Times! Imagine not being able to travel to the deepest parts of Asia, smallest tribes in Africa or the coast of Venezuela without everyone knowing who you are. The whispers and the stares are at a magnitude that none of us will experience in a lifetime. WOW! I have worked with many A-list artists throughout my career and I cannot think of one that I would stand in a long line to see, except Michael Jackson. To the world, he was a pop icon. To the music industry, he was a friend, singersongwriter, record producer, musical arranger, dancer, choreographer, actor, author, businessman, financier, philanthropist, and inventor. To his family, he was a son, brother and father. Memories of Michael’s music will forever touch me. Growing up watching family members jokingly stage his music in my Grandmother’s basement is the depth of my existence. I love music and more importantly, lyrics. It is MJ’s music, talent and exceptional work ethics that our young people need to mimic. The strings that tie the world together are on one end a smile and the other, music. To be touched and inspired by music is to feel, heal, understand and relate. The world is shedding tears that stretch far past the largest ocean. MJ co-wrote (with Lionel Richie) the lyrics to “We are the World” while sitting in his tree on the Neverland Ranch. If a man can climb a tree and co-write this hit song, then what is your excuse? You can create your dreams from anywhere. Perhaps MJ’s professional life will induce you to live and carry out your dreams. Lets celebrate the music of this genius. This weeks Star Spotlight focuses on actor and music producer Romany Malco born November 18, 1968 in Brooklyn New York. He is the first American born son in his family which hails from Trinidad. Malco’s story is encouraging to everyone that has a dream. It’s an account of good happenings and abundant blessings. It all started when Malco moved to Baytown Texas and soon created a rap group called R.M.G. After moving to Los Angeles in the late 1990’s, R.M.G changed their name to College Boyz and signed a deal with Virgin records. Their debut album was released on April 7, 1992 entitled Radio Fusion Radio. Although the album didn’t create any real buzz it ended up making it to #118 on the Billboard 200. The hit single “Victim of the Gheto”, reached #68 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Hot Rap Singles. The Groups second and final album, released in 1994 entitled Nuttin’ Less Nuttin’ Mo’ wasn’t victorious either, making it to #80 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop albums. With College Boyz now just a memory, Malco started working as a music producer on the movie The Pest (1997) starring John Leguizamo. I remember I was working on the set of Blades of Glory (1997), and Malco just had so much energy and charisma. His persona was magnetic and I remember thinking wow this guy is always smiling and he’s so personable, he’s a natural. Apparently Leguizamo thought the same exact thing. He persuaded Malco to consider acting as a career and was confident that he could become very successful. In 1999, Malco graced the big screen in his debut movie Urban Men (1999) starring Snoop Dogg and Ice-T whom he had befriended while still trying to pursue his rap career. The following year he was casted in a reoccurring role as a secret service member in the UPN series Level 9, filmed in Vancouver. In 2001 Malco landed a lead role in VH-1’s Too Legit: The MC Hammer Story (2001) portraying rapper MC Hammer. From there his acting skills blossomed and his career soared. Malco’s first major role in a Hollywood feature was in Jackie Chan’s The Tuxedo (2002). In 2005 Malco starred in The 40 Year Old Virgin where he absolutely killed the big screen. I must say his clowning around and ladies man mentality had me in hysterics! Later on that year he landed the role of Conrad Shepard in the comedy series Weeds. With a successful career spurring from humble beginnings Malco has envisioned a dream that has indefinitely come true. He is married to ex-professional figure skater and Jessica Alba body double Taryn Dakha, whom he met on the set of The Love Guru. The two love birds currently dwell in Redondo Beach. On behalf of myself and the Humor Mill Magazine we look forward to future projects and seeing a lot more of Romany Malco whether it be on the big screen or on the television screen. It’s funny that there seems to be a normal understanding that everyone who has moved to Los Angeles will be or has been either homeless and/or car-less. This is a strange phenomena with deep roots too twisted for me to understand, because I, too have been both homeless and car-less over my past four years of living in LA. Why is this normal when it feels so un-normal? I tend to be an overly-friendly person who normally treats people the way I want to be treated; gee, I’m originally from Kenosha, Wisconsin. Y’think that’s why? I know that’s why I found myself at the back of a 780 Express Bus this past May paralyzed in a hazy stink-bomb fall-out from a man who decided to shit his pants and then get on the bus like it was normal. I’m sitting at the back, with my neck craned to watch the crazy’s strutting on Hollywood Boulevard when I was hit with a horrible stench. I remember thinking how funny the new Cat Woman looked out there on Hollywood & Highland with Superman and Marilyn Monroe; she seemed like she just hadn’t quite mastered her whip yet and the tourists were artfully dodging her picture-taking advances. I snapped my full attention to what was happening on the bus rather than outside it. A tall man, white work shirt, dark-green work pants, and black work boots covered in smatterings of what looked like wet clay all over both toes approached me. He smiled. I smiled back. He took a sip from his coffee mug, said “Hello” to a brother wearing a floral shirt and striped pants and waved to a girl with long brown hair and white, 60’s cat-eye sunglasses as he sat comfortably behind her which was a few rows in front of me to my left. I stared, as I often do; my little brown nose crinkled, my big brown eyes darting back and forth as my mind tried to decipher, process and push “send” on a text message to the rest of me that stated something was clearly amiss. I heard snickers, gasps and murmurs that crescendoed into a sister with braids down her back sayin’, “Aww, hell no! There is a prrroooooblem!” People near me got up, noses held, horror splashed on their brow and ran to the front of the bus ‘til I was the o-n-l-y person left in the back of bus. I didn’t move. I didn’t want that guy to be the kid in the lunch room who sat all alone and everyone laughed at him. I could handle the horrible smell I was smelling. I was tough; I lived in New York for five years. I’ve seen a dead person on the tracks of the N-Train. I’ve seen rats. I’ve smelled Bronx garbage in the summer. I could take it!! The bus jerked to an unscheduled stop. The girl with the 60s glasses turned and looked at me with disgust; I realized she, the bus driver and the rest of the patrons now staring at me with various levels of amazement thought I was The Shitter! The real Shitter looked normal while I looked like the weird girl isolated at the back of bus! I didn’t think that was so funny! I shook my head quickly at them, my eyes wide. I pointed to the man with the white shirt and shit-covered shoes. Everyone turned their stabbing stares on him. He looked back at me. His face paled. He looked like the kid in the lunch room. The sister, who had become the Unofficial Official boomed, “Unh-uh. That is nooot natural. That man has a problem. We ain’t goin’ no where with him on this bus!” On her command, the driver evacuated the bus and motioned for me to follow. I smiled faintly at The Shitter while I walked gingerly past him. I held my breath ‘cause, dude, he smelled buuuhaaaad. And I felt bad for sellin’ him out that day in May. I’d selfishly wanted to hold onto the little bit of normal I’d still had ‘cause Shitter or no Shitter, not having a car in LA is no joke. I’m blessed to have a car now and I do think of him from time-to-time when I drive in my new-used Ford Fusion as I cruise down Hollywood Boulevard and wait for the moment of laughter that I know will come when I see the whipchallenged Cat Woman who seems so normal.

Film: Br端no Starring: Sacha Baron Cohen Director: Larry Charles Even those who didn't blanch at the boldly politically incorrect humor in Sacha Baron Cohen's Borat may find themselves shocked at the graphic antics in his and director Larry Charles's latest, Br端no. All common notions of taste are completely obliterated as he once again takes one of his outrageous characters--here, the titular flamboyantly gay Austrian fashionista--and places him in a number of real-world vignettes strung together with a fairly vague umbrella storyline: Br端no's single-minded quest to become famous, which takes him from Europe to Hollywood to the Middle East to Middle America. While the in-your-face nudity and sexual content (both homo- and hetero-) makes this a more outrageous and potentially offensive sit for viewers, it isn't quite as funny as Borat, for the reliance on shock gags and clear emphasis on sexuality makes this adventure a little more one-note. But those who are not overly sensitive will have some good laughs, not only due to Baron Cohen's continuing, uninhibited immersion into character but also (as in the previous film) how the over-the-top character both unnerves and exposes the real-life people he encounters. That's the secret weapon of Baron Cohen and Charles--for as outlandish as their central character is, he uncovers some biting truths that no comedy writer could invent any better.
Film: I Love You, Beth Cooper Starring: Hayden Panettiere and Paul Rust Director: Chris Columbus I Love You, Beth Cooper would appear to be an ideal vehicle for director Chris Columbus to return to the light entertainment roots for which he made his name. But not long after a truly amusing opening scene--in which the dorky high school valedictorian (Paul Rust) uses the commencement address to make the title declaration to the head cheerleader (Hayden Panettiere) whom he has admired from afar--it quickly becomes clear that the film has already peaked. At the root of the problem is that our ostensible hero and his movie geek sidekick (Jack Carpenter) are far more irritating and pathetic than endearing and root-worthy, helped in no way by the charisma voids that play the roles). As the title character, Hayden Panettiere doesn't fare much better in a pretty impossible role, for Beth just reveals herself as an even crazier and obnoxious piece of work as the movie goes on. Thus the film ultimately begs the question: why the hell should we care at all--especially when laughs are in equally short supply as interesting, much less likable, characters?

At first glance, you might think that comedian Garrick Dixon looks too clean cut to give you funny. However, in a few years he has earned the respect of his peers and adoration of on-lookers in the comedy clubs across America. Born in Washington, DC and raised in Prince George’s County, Maryland, Dixon had several comedic influences that showed him that stand up comics could make a transition from the stage to the big screen. What sets Dixon apart from many comedians is his natural ability to take on dramatic roles, model looks and his experience as what he refers to as a “Corporate Negro.” You can visit many comedy clubs in LA, DC, and New York and hear the same story from comics that went to acting school, dropped out of college or moved away from home after high school. Dixon took a different journey; the unconventional approach. He earned a college degree in Business Management. By day, he wore a suit and tie in Corporate America and by night collecting fans with his “tell it how is” comedic style. Unsatisfied with a double life, Dixon took a huge chance by leaving a high paying corporate position in his midtwenties and packing up to head west
In a few years, Dixon has appeared on UPN shows “All of Us,” “Half and Half,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” NBC’s action/drama “Heroes,” a regular on BET’s top rated show “Hell Date Season 1,” TV One’s “The Funny Spot,” was a finalist in the 2007 Bay Area Black Comedy Competition, landed several national commercials and done print and runway modeling all while earning the respect of many well-known stand up comedians by working in the trenches every night in comedy clubs across the country. He currently is the feature act for Tony Rock. Dixon has been referred to by many industry professionals as “The Leading Man” because of his good looks and diverse talent. Dixon is one to watch! 2009 is definitely the year of the Dix!
Unlike you, at this very moment, I’m chillin’ at the Berkeley Marina, while everyone in Oakland, just a few miles away, is burning up on this hot July day. I’m sitting by the dock of the Bay… watching the misty blanket of quasi-fog lightly engulf the crown jewel of the Bay Area-San Francisco. Like you and everyone else with a memory and a pulse, I’m reflecting on the celebrated and often misunderstood life and unparalleled and tragic death of the world’s greatest entertainer, The King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Being a city brutha, I’m used to people dying. They die from everything from beat-downs to gunshot wounds to broken hearts, from alcohol and drug addiction and even from sex. I’m used to people idolizing as well as demonizing athletes, heroes, celebrities and other luminaries… once they fall from grace or after they’re gone. I’m even accustomed to the media saddling the proverbial horse, riding it nearly to death, putting a few bullets in it for good measure and then beating it some more once it’s dead “because you never can be too sure.” What I’m not used to is America’s schizophrenic love/hate relationship with its African American superstars. It seems like the more enormously popular and iconic the star, the more extreme and addictive the psychosis. As a living, breathing, eccentric, hit-making philanthropic conglomerate, Michael Jackson was always on a planet of his own. In fact, he wasn’t even in the same solar system as the rest of us. When he was on top no one could touch him. On his worse day, no one could touch him then, either. Now, I’m nowhere near being a Jackson family insider and I’m not a betting man but I’d wager that because his genius was so uniquely his own, there were times when his own family members would see him on stage, in the zone “killin’ it” and not even recognize him! Can’t you see Tito and Jermaine asking Jackie if he knew something about mom and dad that they were too young to remember? I can imagine that Mike’s siblings would look at themselves in the mirror, look at Mike, then look back in the mirror and just plain get frustratedtrying to come to grips with the huge disparity in the celestial distribution of extraordinary talent. Also, like a lot of people from my own generation and the two that came after me, I grew up with Michael. I saw him and four of his five brothers on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1969. I remember feeling proud that there was finally a Black band in my own age group that was actually on TV.
They were obviously professional. Their act was extremely tight and they never took any prisoners! They were led by this cool little munchkin who did nothing short of totally “turning it out” everytime he stepped to a microphone. To say I was merely proud doesn’t begin to do my expression of the emotion any justice at all. Please understand, back in those days, we simply were not on television. Let’s see, there was Diane Carol on her groundbreaking show “Julia” and rare appearances of Black entertainers on variety shows such as Jackie Gleason, Red Skelton, Carol Burnett and the aforementioned Ed Sullivan. Those were major occasions! Family members and friends would “be blowin’ up” your rotary princess telephone letting you know that the Temptations, Four Tops, Stevie Wonder or Sly and the Family Stone were on TV. They were all very cool-but too old for me to fully appreciate. But man… when the voice on the other line said, “turn it on Ed Sullivan! The Jackson 5 are on!” That was it! Even yours truly, as a young boy, felt that the game was changing forever. And the unqualified reason for the changing of the game was absolutely another little boy, like me, who unlike me or anyone else in our time, would eventually alter the consciousness of the entire planet… and his name was and is Michael Joseph Jackson.
