Academy provides a challenging educational experience in an inclusive Christian community with an unwavering commitment to develop leaders of integrity and purpose.
It is great to be an FRA Panther! The feeling is palpable as you walk across our campus. Our teachers are dedicated and intentional in everything they do as they live out our mission. Our students are engaged and determined to excel while supporting one another. Our innovative and dynamic academic approach immerses students in a challenging and supportive learning environment. Consequently, our students leave their comfort zones and fully embrace community. It is FRAmily by example; you can see it throughout this issue of the 4700 Magazine.
This fall, we proudly celebrated the incredible achievements of five outstanding students recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Our AllCommunity Tailgate successfully brought together a crowd of over 1,500, fostering a sense of unity and enthusiasm for the start of the school year. Our 12-2 football team's remarkable journey led them to the TSSAA playoff semifinals. Wake Forest bound Ty Clark III's recognition as a Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Finalist capped one of the finest singleseason performances in school history. Finally, our student presentation of Into the Woods left most of us wondering if we were watching a show on Broadway!
Throughout this year and those before, our community's unwavering support has been a driving force, as we recognize that last year, we collectively raised a record level of contribution to the 2022-23 Annual Fund. It is incredible that our parent participation has averaged over 90% for the last five years. The impact of the Unique Moment in Time Campaign for FRA Phase II provided the new, state-of-the-art lower school
playfield, the Harding Road Connector, and an increased level of safety and security by installing our new perimeter fence and enhanced surveillance system.
In this edition of the 4700, the Philanthropy Report for 2022-23 is featured, highlighting our entire school community's remarkable support and generosity. I am grateful for our families' overwhelming commitment to our unique mission of delivering a challenging educational experience within an inclusive Christian community. And what is most exciting is that we are just getting started!
I hope you will enjoy reading the inspiring stories of current students, teachers, alums, and families, leaving an indelible impact on our campus. As always, the Casey Family is blessed to be a part of this phenomenal FRAmily.
Sincerely,

We love highlighting the work our alumni are doing in their professional lives and communities. In this section, alumni share their stories about life after graduating from FRA.
We hope you enjoy hearing about the success of these two FRA alumni.
Clif graduated from FRA in 1994 as a 13-year club member He played varsity basketball, was a two-time state Champion (4x200m and 800m) in track, and was active in Young Life. Today, Clif is the Nashville Market President for Old National Bank, responsible for building a commercial banking expansion for the $50B franchise. Together with his wife, Beth, they have a son, Clifton ‘23, who attended FRA for 13 years and graduated in 2023. Clifton is currently a freshman at Belmont studying general business.
MMy lifelong commitment to FRA has significantly influenced both my path and my family’s journey. Witnessing FRA’s remarkable evolution from different points of view - starting from my student days to my current role in my career – has been an invaluable experience.
FRA has been a consistent presence, shaping my perspective and providing numerous opportunities for networking, friendships, and inspiration.
Earlier this year, I took on a thrilling new role as the Market President for Old National Bank, contributing to the launch of the brand in my hometown. This fall,
the announcement of Old National acquiring Nashville-based Capstar Bank, where I started as an original employee in 2008, marked a fulfilling full-circle moment in my professional journey. As I prepare to tackle the challenges and embrace the successes in my career, I express gratitude and credit for the foundational years I spent at Franklin Road Academy.
In my current role as Market President, I oversee the expansion of commercial banking for Old National Bank, a $50 billion franchise. Each day presents new opportunities and exciting challenges that inspire continuous improvement, reminiscent of each new day at FRA.
My FRA education prepared me for various professional and philanthropic roles, instilling a commitment to integrity in every situation. The spiritual connections formed at FRA hold great significance for me. Values imparted by remarkable individuals such as Coach Tucker, Ed Zaborowski, and Jean Branum Young continue to guide me, influencing my daily actions in the workplace.
Looking back at FRA in the '80s and '90s, it was a close-knit community that felt like home. While the term "FRAmily" may not have been officially coined then, it has always been at the heart of the institution's identity. The distinctive inclusivity of FRA has stayed with me, shaping my approach in every role, company, and position I’ve undertaken - striving to connect with people where they are and inspiring them to reach their full potential.
While recent career developments have been fulfilling, they fade in comparison to the transformative journey my family has experienced over the past 13 years at FRA. My connection with FRA evolved into that of a Legacy parent, serving on the board for twelve years in various capacities. Financial support for the school has been a commitment my wife, Beth, and I gladly uphold through multiple campaigns. Watching FRA mature into a formidable campus and dynamic community has been gratifying. Sending Clifton to FRA has been a decision that holds deeper significance, as we recognize he is part of something greater than the institution I attended. FRA’s continued growth year after year is a testament to its strength.
In May, our son graduated, marking the culmination of his childhood and teenage journey on campus. Clifton and I share a special bond appreciating what FRA means to each of us, individually and collectively. This spring brought another full-circle moment as I watched him accept his diploma, the same diploma I received and had the honor to hand diplomas to other graduates in recent years.
Throughout the years, I’ve worn different hats at FRA. However, this year marks the first time since 1982 that I have not been directly involved as an FRA student, coach, board member, or parent. Despite this, my deep connection to the school remains unwavering. Beth and I continue to attend games on campus, and I take time to keep in touch with the faculty and administration. Witnessing FRA’s ongoing evolution fills me with
immense pride, reminiscent of the pride I felt when I first set foot on the campus.
In Clifton’s senior year, he spent a semester immersed in the Heart-to-Heart program. His daily one-hour mentorship evolved into genuine, lasting friendships with students like Daniel and Ethan. During his Exceptional Learners experience, Clifton was passionate about advocating for his H2H friends. This highlights the fantastic FRA program that instills compassion, kindness, and respect - essential principles for our students and graduates to positively impact the world! While campus life may have been different for Clifton compared to my time, the constancy of a loving faculty and staff committed to the growth and well-being of the entire student body remains unchanged amid FRA’s new facilities and innovative programs.
We belong to an extraordinary and impactful community. Watching Clifton's class depart with a sense of accomplishment and a profound understanding of their remarkable journey was heartwarming. I encourage every FRA family, student, and parent to immerse themselves in various facets of school life. Embrace the endless opportunities to develop connections and network with peers, faculty, staff, parents, scholars, athletes, entrepreneurs, and artists. These relationships, nurtured over the years, were invaluable tools in my career journey and will be essential and inspirational as we shape motivated, passionate students and foster the strongest community in Nashville and beyond.
Heather Osteen Mathias, a proud FRA Class of ’97 member, is an award-winning designer, entrepreneur, and business leader. She has been named one of Nashville’s 40 Under 40 and, more recently, was honored as one of Nashville’s Most Admired CEOs by the Nashville Business Journal. Heather spent much of her career in one of the United States’ top architecture and interior design firms, where she was named Principal in 2014. She established Mathias Collective in 2019, a consulting firm providing owners’ representation and design direction for mid to large-scale project developments. Her firm’s first project was a $300 million stadium for the Columbus Crew, a Major League Soccer
team in Columbus, Ohio, which opened in 2021. She launched the Studio at Mathias Collective, a full-service architecture and design practice within her firm, in 2023. With a focus on design quality and excellent service, Mathias Collective ensures its clients are delighted with the project process and its outcomes.
Beyond her successful career, Heather is married to fellow FRA alumnus Jason Mathias (’97) and is a loving mom to current FRA students Walker Mathias and Ella Mathias.
RReflecting on my FRA experience fills me with gratitude for the past and excitement for the future. As an FRA student, I cherish my lower, middle, and upper school memories. The education I received gave me a solid foundation and strong work ethic, uncovered and encouraged my creativity, and empowered me to thrive in my career. My children are being prepared at FRA now for a vastly different world than the one I emerged into, but I am confident they will be well-equipped to succeed.
In 2019, I embarked on a thrilling entrepreneurship journey, launching my company, Mathias Collective. We provide design and bespoke project management for workplace, hospitality, sports, and education projects. I have built a company culture that serves our team generously - we produce excellent work and offer exceptional work-life balance. Starting and running my company my way is a dream come true, and I am proud of where we are and where we are going.
In my role now as CEO, I am thoughtfully building and guiding the business, developing new clients, encouraging my team, and working on projects. We work to deeply understand our clients and other designers, architects, artisans, contractors, and vendors. Our efforts and understanding allow us to ensure a cohesive, collective effort, delivering superior results that exceed our client’s expectations. I have been fortunate to learn from many inspiring people, including the impactful faculty from my years at FRA, who inspired how I work and lead.
I encountered remarkable educators during my time as a student at FRA. Ms. Dale, my geometry teacher, ignited my fascination with shapes and forms within mathematics - a discipline where I excelled and continue to apply in my design practice. Mr. Climer, Ms. Thigpen, and Coach Tucker exemplified leadership and creativity in their teaching styles through their nurturing spirits and ability to inspire their students. These educators’ practical yet profoundly creative approach has left a lasting impact on me.
My company’s culture closely aligns with how FRA supports its students, promoting and encouraging physical, intellectual, and spiritual health. In my career and as a mother, I’ve recognized the importance of thoughtful care for oneself. I prioritize my spiritual, mental, and physical well-being and encourage my team to do the same. This self-care fosters creativity and increases one’s strength and resilience – lessons I began to learn within FRA’s halls.
As an alumna from the class of 1997, the daughter of former administrator Beth Osteen, married to fellow alumnus Jason Mathias ’97, and parent to Walker ’26 and Ella ’29, the school is intricately woven into my narrative. Witnessing the remarkable progress at FRA, particularly in the past decade, fills me with pride, and it brings me joy to see my children thrive as current students.
I'm consistently impressed by the teachers' and administrators' intelligence, diversity, and warmth during each Parent Preview Night.
Franklin Road Academy exudes vitality and a profound sense of purpose. I am sincerely grateful that my family and I are part of this community. I have sought to infuse this sense of purpose into my own company, fostering an environment of creativity, excellence, and community. FRA’s strong community, along with the diverse array of classes, clubs, and courses offered, is why we have entrusted this school with our children’s education and to be the springboard for their futures. I encourage my children to become involved on campus and explore offerings with varying commitment and intensity levels. The unwavering support and dedication from coaches, teachers, and the entire staff is extraordinary.
FRA has provided numerous opportunities and laid the groundwork for me to achieve my goals, including becoming an entrepreneur. Our family is committed to seizing every opportunity FRA presents, building relationships, embracing new experiences, and facing challenges without fear. My hope for my children, after fully immersing themselves in all that FRA has to offer, is that they will reflect fondly on the profound impact it had on their lives, much like I do today.
The Franklin Road Academy Athletics Hall of Fame was establishe d in 2021 to show appreciation to those individuals or teams who have made significant contributions to FRA athletics.
Those chosen for induction into the FRA Athletics Hall of Fame have influenced our community through their ability, dedication, and service to our athletic program while at FRA and following graduation.
This year, we honored a remarkable group of athletes who embody the spirit of FRA. The inductees for 2023 were the 2010 State Champion Girls Golf Team, Kevin Patterson'03, Austin Weaver '02, Keely Weaver Corlew '99, the 1988 State Champion Baseball Team, and Coach Ken McDonald.
Each of these teams and individuals made an indelible impact on our school community by demonstrating the leadership, dedication, a nd grit required to achieve outstanding success.
THE GIRLS' GOLF TEAM won the State Championship with a spectacular comeback from two strokes back to overtake region rival USN by a single stroke at Willowbrook Golf Course on September 29, 2010. The 21st team state championship for FRA marked the first state championship as a Division II-A member.
The Lady Panther's golfers Mary Landon Funk, Andrea Cropper, and Rachel Johnson, beat the University School of Nashville 318-317. The title wasn’t decided until Andrea, the last of FRA’s three golfers to finish, dropped a par putt to avoid a playoff. Johnson’s two-day score of 169 (80 – 89) placed her 9th, Cropper’s score of 162 (82 – 80) placed her 6th, and Funk’s score of 157 (79 – 78) placed her 4th in state, earning her All-State honors. “I’m really proud of the team,” said Mary Landon. “We had to work hard over the summer to get where we are.”
“That’s the way a state championship should be, down to the wire,” FRA Coach Glenn Tackett said after the victory. “The girls’ goal from last year, after finishing 3rd at state, was to win the state tournament. Their dedication and
hard work throughout the summer and fall season was unbelievable. It was the most exciting state tournament that I’ve ever been involved with. It was so close throughout the tournament and came down to the last shot. Being reclassified to DII in golf was a step up in competition for the team, and they rose to the occasion. Competing at this higher level and getting to the state tournament was an achievement in itself. Winning was a remarkable accomplishment. The girls stayed focused, and it was such a joy to see them win. It was a team effort. All three girls’ scores were used both days, and that makes it even more meaningful.”
Mary Landon Funk went on to play golf at Princeton University, Andrea Cropper played at the University of Memphis, and Rachel Johnson played at Xavier University.
KEVIN PATTERSON is a member of the 12-year club, having attended FRA from PreK 3 to 12th grade. As an athlete, he set numerous track records while also playing basketball. Highlighted during his junior year in 2002, Kevin won the state championship in the decathlon and was a member of the state champion 4x400m relay team. He also was the sectional long jump champion in 2002 and 2003 and the 2003 sectional triple jump champion. As team captain in 2003, he led his team to the 4x400-meter relay championship. Kevin led FRA’s track and field teams to three consecutive state championships from 2001-2003 and four successive sectional titles from 2000-2003. He was voted twice to the prestigious Tennessean’s All Mid-State Track and Field Team. Kevin graduated as a member of the National Honor Society and attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
While at UNC-Chapel Hill, he competed as a sprinter and jumper in the heptathlon and decathlon, placing 5th in the decathlon at the 2004 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. After graduation, his love for
FRA and coaching kept him involved as the assistant track coach from 2009-2012, working alongside his long-time head coach and mentor, Coach David Tucker. Kevin is co-founder of TopCola Cultivators, and is a part-time personal trainer and jiu-jitsu instructor. Kevin lives in Nashville with his wife, Tavianna, and son, Cullen.
AUSTIN WEAVER enrolled at Franklin Road Academy as a Kindergartener. He embodied the characteristics of an ideal student-athlete. Austin held numerous school records in cross country and track and field. He won four District Championships and three Metro, Region, and State Championships in cross country. In 2000, 2001, and 2002, Austin won the State Championship in the 3200 meters in track and field, and he is tied for the record for the most state titles in this event. Austin also won the State Championships twice in the 1600 meters in 2001 and 2002. He inspired his teammates by winning All-District, All-Region, and All-State honors from freshman to senior year. He led his team to win the 1998, 2001, and 2002 State Championships. FRA remains tied for the most State Championships in track and field. Austin once said, “After thousands of miles of fun, we accomplished things that rarely happen outside of dreams, and everyone had a great time doing so.”
Off the field, Austin earned many academic awards, including the Founder’s Award, the highest honor given to a student at Awards Day, and graduated as the salutatorian of his class. After graduation, he followed his dream to run cross country and track for the University of Notre Dame. He was a three-time Monogram winner and All-Big East selection for the crosscountry and track teams. His team won seven Big East team titles in cross country and track and finished 3rd at the NCAA cross country championships in 2005. Austin graduated cum laude from Notre Dame and earned his MBA from Vanderbilt University. He and his wife Lauren, another native Nashvillian, met while running at FRA, and they have been married for 16 years. They have two children, Cullen and Liam.
KEELY WEAVER enrolled at Franklin Road Academy as a 4th grader and fell in love with running during the mile run in PE class. As an athlete, Keely participated in cross country, track, and basketball at FRA and lettered in all three sports. She trained under Coach David Muckle and Coach David Tucker, who said, “Keely was an outstanding athlete beloved by her teammates and even her fiercest competitors. She always remained humble and had a work ethic second to none.” Keely was a three-time individual cross-country State Champion in 1996, 1997, and 1998 and she won individual track state titles in both the 1600-meter run and 3200-meter run in 1998 and 1999. She holds seven State Championships, the most in FRA girls’ athletic history for any sport. She was known for her kind, friendly nature and was friends with most runners in Tennessee. Before a race, Keely was known to give her competitors a flower. She was loved by her teammates at FRA and had the best running partner, her younger brother, Austin. When she wasn’t running, she served as secretary of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, was a member of the Honor Council and the National Honor Society, and was salutatorian of her class. After graduation, she continued her cross country and track career through a scholarship to Belmont University, where she became the first NCAA AllAmerican for any male or female athlete across any sport at Belmont University.
Upon graduating, she returned to FRA as a kindergarten teacher, a PreK aid, and a cross country and track coach with Coach Tucker. After two years, Keely and her husband Kevin moved across the country due to Kevin’s job with the FBI. She is a mother of two, Grace and Graham, and her family currently lives in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She is a teacher at Vandergriff Elementary, coaches her daughter’s cross-country and track teams, and enjoys helping at her church.
THE 1988 BASEBALL TEAM had a remarkable season with 27 wins against only 2 losses, culminating with the Class A State Championship. The team batted over .400 for the season, winning the District and Regional Championships en route to their historic season. While benefitting from the tremendous leadership of its seniors Jay Dalton, Todd Glisson, Danny North, Kyle Rigsby, Charley Williamson, Matt Woodard, David Harr, Todd Dragon, and Paul Nelson. Coach George Weicker cultivated the players’ talents and love for each other into a team that would not settle for anything less than a State Championship. Under the leadership of pitching coach Jerry Williams, FRA had one of the best starting rotations in the state, which included Danny North, Matt Woodard, Paul Nelson, Todd Dragon, Jeremy Ogborn, Jon Ognibene, Grady Cannon, and Matthew Gaunt. All these factors combined to make FRA one of the best baseball teams in the state of Tennessee. The entire community rallied behind the team all the way to the Championship. One fan remarked, “I’ve never seen a high school team play with such skill, compatibility, and dedication.”
COACH KEN MCDONALD started as the head varsity soccer coach for both the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams in 2000. Under his leadership, the boys’ team won the regional championship in 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2004 and reached the state semi-finals in 2000, 2002, and 2004. Coach Mac’s overall FRA boys' soccer record was 161 wins, 93 losses, and 30 draws. Coach Mac found even greater success coaching the girls’ soccer program from 2000 – 2018. In that span, the girls’ team won the region championship 11 times, reached the state quarterfinals seven times, and played in the state semi-finals for the first time in 2001. His program won four state championships in 2002, 2004, 2005, and 2007, making Coach Mac one of the most decorated head coaches in FRA history. Coach Mac’s overall FRA Girls' Soccer record is 287 wins, 92 losses, and 30 draws. “No coach ever developed me as a soccer player and as a person like Coach McDonald,” said Kristin Garman Salato, player and 2022 Hall of Fame inductee. “I will be forever grateful for his impact on me and my teammates. I was always impressed with how he could take all levels of talent and personalities and make a cohesive unit. He could get my best and everyone’s best without raising his voice; instead, he raised his expectations. We all wanted to meet and exceed them because of our respect for him as a coach and mentor.”
Coach Mac played college soccer at Penn State University, eventually leading him to play professionally for the San Jose Earthquakes. He played professional soccer for seven seasons before ending his career with the St. Louis Steamers in 1985. He moved to Nashville in 1989 to become the Vanderbilt University Women’s Head Soccer Coach. While at Vanderbilt, Coach Mac’s team won the SEC championship in 1993 and 1994 and went to the NCAA tournament each year from 1994 –1998. He was named SEC Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1997. After an overall coaching record at Vanderbilt of 126 wins, 67 losses, and 2 draws, Coach Mac left college coaching in 1998. He and his wife, Anne Louise, have three children who attended FRA. His soccer legacy at FRA continues with his son Ryan, now serving as the FRA head boys’ soccer coach and assistant coach for the girls’ program.
The Distinguished Alumni Award was established in 2005 to show appreciation to those individuals who have made significant contributions to FRA. Those chosen to receive this award have influenced our community through their accomplishments, dedication, and service while at FRA and following graduation.

THE DNA LAB ALLOWS OUR STUDENTS TO ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN THE FIELD OF BIOTECHNOLOGY, WHICH IS ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING DIVISIONS OF THE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY.
BY STEPHANIE FEYES,upper school biology teacher
HHave you ever thought about the science behind the idea of designer babies? What about genetically modified foods? Have you ever wondered how insulin is generated for diabetics? Our students are investigating these questions and more in our DNA laboratory space.
Biotechnology, in its simplest form, is the manipulation of living things to create a product that is beneficial for humans. Designer babies, genetically modified foods (GMOs), and recombinant DNA are just a few of the biotechnology topics FRA students have the opportunity to engage with on a regular basis. Gone are the days of middle and high school biology programs focusing on fact-learning and repetition. Students need to be scientists. They need to engage with the content and be placed in scenarios where they are the researchers investigating their own questions, not bystanders just hearing about a topic.
The DNA Lab, located in our Math and Science Hall, opens the door for our students to actively participate in the field of biotechnology, which is one of the fastest growing divisions of the science and technology industry. The knowledge and skills gained by the students who access our DNA Lab will help them develop a strong understanding of biotechnology and the impact it has on society. A significant portion of the time spent in the DNA Lab will involve actual and simulated research that is being done in laboratories world-wide. These inquiry opportunities will provide our students with the unique experience of carrying out life changing experiments in our very own school. Ultimately, it is our hope the content learned and skills developed in this space will offer students the chance to develop a signature science experience during their time at FRA.
The next time your mind begins to wonder and you want to know how crime scene investigators find genetic matches to evidence collected at a crime scene, just ask one of our DNA Lab scientists. They can show you how it is done.
FRA blessed me with guardian angels who planted seeds of confidence and nurtured my potential as a young person. Among these, Ms. Feyes, my former AP biology teacher, honored me with a commission to commemorate the grand opening of the DNA Lab. I recently had graduated, and this project allowed me to reflect on and show my gratitude for FRA’s influence on my personal and artistic development.
I joined FRA mainly due to the support and attentiveness Dr. Fred Frawley showed my family during our pivotal decision to repeat third grade. This offered me a fresh start to build my reading skills as a newly diagnosed dyslexic. Dr. Frawley was my first “guardian angel” and embodied the warm essence I felt throughout my FRA career, meeting teachers, deans, and coaches who expanded my perception of personal potential. From third to eighth grade, my school experience went from a battle of intellectual insecurities to flourishing academics and community involvement. Finding a passion for school changed my life.
Faculty and staff acknowledged my unique challenges and validated my hard work by investing extra energy to foster my growth. They inventively re-explained concepts and encouraged me to try hard at things I am good at. My sixth-grade literature teacher, Mr. Brasel, opened my eyes to storytelling's beauty and affirmed my appreciation for reading and writing with an award at the end of the year. Mrs. Blevins helped explain my disposition to other teachers and gave me a voice to ask for help without embarrassment. Ms. Feyes integrated illustration into class note-taking, nourishing my mode of comprehension and furthering my interest in medical illustration.
All my life, I observed nature, cultivated proprioception in gymnastics and dance, and processed the world around me and its effect on my internal state through drawing. The sensation of making things as a child satisfied my mind’s need to manifest my thoughts physically. I have maintained this intuitive practice throughout my life and continue to learn through my hands.
My dream profession as a child was to be a pastry chef because I enjoyed the transformative process
of baking raw ingredients into tasty sculptures. I met a medical illustrator in eighth grade and was thrilled that a profession that visually represents innovative knowledge existed. My creative compass, still magnetized to the challenge and process of building active art, led me to pursue Architecture at Tulane University. Architecture education helped articulate my observation of the relationship between art, science, math, and other subjects through design. In lower school, drawing diagrams and graphs strengthened my understanding of math and science, and inversely, math and science resolved my 2D and 3D fabrication. I find literature extraordinarily inspiring; it is still challenging to recognize phonics and decipher semiotics.
Alternatively, art allows for floating concepts in my and other’s minds to find non-verbal meaning through the evolution of making. This can be for personal use or communication with audiences. Art as a form of note-taking can result in personalized imagery helpful for immediate recall of concepts, like seeing a photo that transports you into the memory. Ms. Feyes’ class incorporated drawing, implementing the scientist's skill of hand-eye mind connection known to Leonardo Da Vinci. At the end of her biology and AP biology courses, I accumulated two journals of reference material ideally prompted for the DNA Lab mural. The illustrative notes I took during class served as a style guide intended to feel familiar to students. I hope they relate to its playfulness, noticing similarities and differences in their notes. Because sketching expresses personal understanding, illustrative notes can look different. It's encouraging to see how exploring perspectives beyond our own can lead to the same insights. Imagination has the power to challenge the rules of reality, sparking fresh investigations.
I was thrilled by the grandeur of this 14’x17’ concrete canvas and the ability to think big.
Considering the A/C tube and whiteboard obstructing the rectangle, I used gridded paper to understand the proportions of my working space. Inspired by the movement and tools involved in gel electrophoresis, I envisioned this 2-dimensional canvas as a live fish tank.
Your eyes jump from ions floating down the gel electrophoresis to chromosomes lining up to spin the genetic wheel of fortune and DNA replicating
with mutations to catch. The mural is not a manual but an imagined interaction of previously learned DNA replication knowledge and newly introduced DNA identification technology. At the top, the pipette initiates the charged waterfall carrying DNA from wells to bars, resulting in a DNA fingerprint. The liquid responds to its container, “falling” off the edge of the whiteboard and onto the ground, where the composition transitions to a deeper dive into genetics. The wheel of fortune, with pie slices proportioned to their inherited dominant or
recessive tendency, is spun by a chromosome character. Each chromosome awaits its turn on the zoomedin DNA “ladder,” weaving through doorways in the deoxyribose, house-like silhouettes. Their genetic variation represents the unique identity of every person’s DNA fingerprint. Yellow Erlenmeyer flasks appear translucent, changing color where they overlap to appear interactive rather than wallpaper-like. The mural incorporates standard DNA symbols and specific topics and technologies studied in class, providing accessible insight and curiosity to understand more.
One of my favorite memories of making the mural remains unseen. Beneath the whiteboard are handprints in the college colors of my good friends and co-art-enthusiasts Jake Slipkovich and Sherwin Nazemi, who helped fill in my penciled design. I was thankful to celebrate years of friendship and memories making dance decorations together with this final project. We sealed our work with the kiss of our palms and began our college adventures.
Observing how my imagination and interpretation of the world can elicit a response from another individual is magical. In upper school, I was recognized with multiple regional art awards, and in 2019, I received national recognition with a gold and silver medal awarded at Carnegie Hall by the Scholastic Art and Writing competition. My first gallery display was in August 2022 at Chauvet Art Gallery in Nashville, TN. Since then, my art career has been blessed with a few personal commissions.
This DNA lab mural project was one of the greatest honors bestowed on me. I was entrusted with a commission of a grand scale at a young age, opening my eyes to how others value my work and work ethic. No matter the longevity of its surface, the experience is an important feeling I carry with me always. It will inspire other students and give recognition to those who inspired me on my journey. This spring, I graduate from Tulane University with an Architecture and Art degree and look forward to pursuing a master's in industrial design and working in the design fabrication field.
Five years ago, I nervously drove onto the FRA campus for an interview for an opening in the science department. Even before setting foot on campus, I had a feeling this was going to be a community of which I would desire to be a part. While I knew that I would be able to speak with ease about my teaching abilities, I was unsure how a conversation around my faith would unfold. Faith is so deeply personal. Yet, the people I spoke with that day engaged me in a way that I hadn’t been previously. It was the difference between being interviewed as a potential employee and being interviewed as a prospective member of the family. We talked about every facet of my life, and I walked away feeling valued as a whole person. I knew that in this community, I would be able to both share my expertise and walk alongside students as we explored our faith together.
FRA’s approach to faith is unlike other faith-based schools. Here, faith isn’t imposed on our students but rather lived out daily through our diverse faculty as reflections of our Christian mission. These educators offer their faith as an invitation, not an expectation, allowing students to participate in their own time and on their own terms. From conversations in class to Spiritual Emphasis Week, students are allowed to explore their own beliefs at their own pace. Every question and doubt are met with the same grace that is shown to us by God.
At the core of FRA’s community are the exceptional educators who interact with our students every day. They embody a unique blend of academic excellence and boundless love and compassion. They demand excellence from their students and also from themselves and their colleagues. Their classrooms aren’t just places of learning, they are spaces filled with joy and engagement. Our educators are incredible because they understand the importance of continual improvement and can relay that idea to students because they themselves are participating in it.
It should come as no surprise that FRA was recognized as a Top Workplace in Tennessee; an effort led by our own Bob Chandler. This isn’t merely a title; it is a reflection of the voices of our educators who love this community deeply. This recognition demonstrates that the feelings I experienced on my first day on campus, the feelings of being valued as a whole person, are not unique to me but rather felt by so many members of our community.
FRA has grown and evolved over the years as we have increased the size of our student body, brought forth new and innovative programs, and expanded and improved our facilities. However, these things remain constant: our unwavering commitment to faith and our deep desire to create an outstanding learning environment. FRA isn’t just a workplace; it is a testament to the beauty of a community bound together by faith, grace, and shared pursuit of excellence.
Sofia Darsinos, an FRA student since eighth grade, not only contributed as varsity cheer team co-captain but also served as a lead student ambassador and senior class president. While her fall school decision is pending, she intends to pursue studies in international business and Spanish.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU ATTENDED FRA, AND WHAT WILL YOU TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR TIME HERE?
I began at FRA in eighth grade and have seen this place impact every part of who I am. Seeing my relationships grow with both teachers and my peers is something I will always treasure. I’ve had many exciting experiences at FRA during my last few months that have made me so grateful to call this place home. I see how I am being invested in and can’t wait to practice what I’ve learned on a college campus.
I have learned how to be a servant leader. I am so confident in myself, in who FRA has made me to be, and who I will continue to be. When I first arrived at FRA, I hesitated to be involved in anything and found myself being shy. Today, I want to be involved in all that is offered to me. I get so excited talking about FRA and have learned it is such an honor to represent this place in little and big ways.
Since becoming a senior, I’ve seen a new side of the student experience. You begin to take such pride in the most minor things. Pulling onto campus every morning, I am reminded of who I am because of my experience here, and senior year has only amplified that. From senior greeting to decorating the Hill and being a leader in different areas on campus, I see not only how my senior year is impacting me but how I can use it to impact other students.
So many people on FRA's campus have impacted my life spiritually and academically. For academics, Mr. Sanford’s AP World History class has prepared me for college. His passion for the subject made me passionate, and I want to make him proud. He encouraged me to try my hardest, push through when topics were challenging, and dive
deeper into the subject. Spiritually, I’ve had incredible women like Ms. Koogler, Ms. Devey, and Ms. Bachert, who each encouraged me to become the best I could be while being a friend to everyone.
I have been improving year by year, trying more challenging classes and being excited to try them. The thought of AP courses and honors courses, used to scare me. I’ve been challenged to think differently. Our teachers care deeply, and I realize daily how blessed I am to have teachers who challenge me out of love. I know I can do most things; I’ve seen this pay off in big ways.
I’ve had the chance to participate in so many incredible clubs, teams, and groups on campus. Currently, I am senior class president and love the opportunity to lead my peers, especially through this last year. Beyond student government, I am captain of the cheer and dance teams, work with Best Buddies, attend YoungLife, work with lower school cheer, and am a lead student ambassador. I feel so grateful to have these moments shaping my FRA experience.
Our community is something I will always cherish and carry with me. After COVID, our community grew stronger than I have ever seen it. Amid something so hard, our faculty helped us grow and made this the most excellent place to go to school, and I imagine a fantastic place to work. We have a place that is resilient through hard times, and because of this incredible and unique community, I know what it looks like to stay joyful during hard things.
My advice might sound scary, but it shouldn’t be. I encourage each underclassman to make friendships and
talk to the upperclassmen. Each upperclass student hopes to make your time on campus the best of your life. When I think of myself, I hope to invest in each incoming freshman student and make them feel welcome and supported. Upperclassmen want to be there for you however they can!
Every person in my grade I consider a sibling. My teachers are another set of parents, and everyone on this campus pushes me to improve daily. This place has given me another family to grow with, laugh with, and have the best years of my life.
Jack Spicer, an FRA member since kindergarten, exemplifies dedication through diverse involvement. An eight-year band member, showcasing trumpet talent, he's been a key player on the varsity golf team, reaching the state championship in his senior year. Jack contributes to spiritual life, leading worship and serving on the worship team. As an FRA ambassador, he showcases pride and dedication, touring prospective families. Jack, heading to Lipscomb University for Business Management, continues his personal and professional growth journey.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU ATTENDED FRA, AND WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY?
Since Kindergarten, I have been an FRA Panther and have had 13 years of incredible memories. One of my favorites was Mr. Javier, who worked on the cleaning staff while I was in lower school. Each year, he would lead the whole school in ‘Feliz Navidad.’ In the hallway, he was always so joyful and knew every kid. To this day, he still wishes me a happy birthday.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNED AT FRA?
I have learned patience and humility. I will walk away from FRA being changed by teachers such as Mr. Chandler, who never gets angry, practices the love of God, and teaches me to do the same. I will walk away feeling confident because men like Mr. Harris and Coach Hart have also provided this example.
HOW HAS YOUR SENIOR YEAR IMPACTED YOUR FRA JOURNEY?
Growing up on this campus, I have seen 12 senior classes go before me and do many fun things. The students grow close and gather around FRA with such school spirit. Homecoming, for example, was such a special day because I walked into the pep rally with my little brother. Sharing my love for FRA with other students gave me a new and exciting perspective.
HOW HAS THE SENIOR CLASS ELEVATED YOUR LOVE FOR FRA?
I’ve grown up with some of my friends since childhood. I know this is unique and special, and I don’t take it for granted. As a senior, I see a new enthusiasm for the place I was raised in. My peers and I have a new energy, even for those who have been here a long time. We’ve become more close-knit, and I know that will continue when we graduate. It is fun to grow closer with people and support them in our last months together.
Mr. Chandler has been by my side, encouraging and challenging me since I was in fifth grade. For the last seven years, he has wa tched and helped me grow. For those same seven years, he’s been my favorite teacher and makes each day of learning fun. Ms. Dunn has also made learning Spanish such a memorable and fun experience through music and song, but most importantly, through something I’m passionate about.
Since middle school, I have felt challenged and supported. Teachers have always pushed me to grow and dive deeper into specific subjects and courses. Mr. Allen’s writing class stands out because I know I am ready for college. With his class, I am always encouraged to think critically and write precisely. FRA has prepared me for whatever academic endeavors I choose to pursue next.
I’ve been so grateful to be involved in many different areas on campus, but the ones that have impacted my FRA experience most have been the worship team, student ambassadors, golf, and band. Each of these has helped me become a leader in different areas and see new perspectives of FRA.
This 2023 season has been my favorite memory, without a doubt. Becoming state runner-ups and having the chance to experience that pride in my sport was unmatched. This year, we worked well together, pushed each other to improve, and remained brothers on and off the golf course.
If I had one piece of advice, it would be to get involved and not be scared to do something. The more you do, the more people you meet, the more this place will become your home. It is as unique as you let it be.
FRA is home. It is where I have watched myself grow and become the person I hoped to be. Every monumental memory here is one that I will cherish and always take with me. Not everyone gets to see their school as a home, and that is what this place will always be for me. I am eternally grateful for all the people, programs, and memories that have made me an FRA man.
The FRA student life experience has evolved with meaningful out-of-class experiences, including retreats fostering relationships with peers and faculty, and promoting spiritual growth early in the school year.
In the lower school, our 4th-grade retreat focuses on leadership through team-building games and programming.. Students learn valuable skills that focus on listening, problem solving, and positive encouragement, guided by insights from proven upper school student leaders and faculty on the importance of leveraging individual strengths for strong leadership.
Our middle school students experience grade-level retreats at off-campus locations, emphasizing diverse aspects of relationship building. The journey concludes with the 8th-grade theme verse retreat at Barefoot Republic in southern Kentucky, focusing on leadership development and strengthening early-year connections.
"As the Director of Student Activities, it is my objective to provide our students will opportunities to grow in their faith, their relationships, and in community within FRA's unique culture. We are committed to fostering leadership, instilling kindness, empathy, compassion, and resilience, enhancing students' academic and co-curricular experiences, and fostering lasting relationships beyond graduation."
DAVID DAWSON, DIRECTOR OF STUDENT LIFE
Upper school students kick off the year with a unique, all-school retreat a week before school starts in August. The retreat, filled with energy, allows students to strengthen existing relationships and forge new bonds with peers and faculty through activities like lip sync routines, zip-lining, water slides, and Alpha/ Omega events. The evening session, led by Director of Spiritual Life Brandon Albright, sets the tone for the year, focusing on the theme verse chosen by the senior class and challenging students to live it out in the new school year.
At the end of each school year, our rising senior class comes together for the Junior Theme Verse Retreat. This is their first official opportunity to explore their desire to lead our school community as the eldest students. Mr. Albright walks them through the process of thoughtfully selecting a theme verse for their senior year. This verse will become the guiding rudder for the school year spiritually and provide guidance for our students daily.
DAVID THOMAS, LMSW, serves as Executive Director and Summer Director at Daystar Counseling Ministries. He guides Daystar as co-executive director, meets with clients for parent consults, provides assessments with new families, and supervises the guys’ staff. He is the author of ten books, including the best-selling “Wild Things: The Art of Nurturing Boys and Raising Emotionally Strong Boys: Tools Your Son Can Build on for Life.” He co-hosts the “Raising Boys & Girls” podcast and has become a sought-after speaker nationwide. David joined us on campus in October as one of our Counseling Coffee speakers, where he spoke on helping kids build vital emotional health.
I don’t think anyone was terribly surprised to learn the U.S. Surgeon General declared youth mental health a “state of emergency” at the end of 2021. We had been seeing growing rates of anxiety and depression with kids and adolescents for some time pre-pandemic. Those numbers became significantly worse during the pandemic. For example, in the U.S., emergency room visits for suicide rose 51 percent for adolescent girls in
early 2021 as compared to the same period in 2019. The figure rose 4 percent for boys. This crisis put a spotlight on the need for helping youth develop resilience and emotional strength as they encounter all the difficult moments of growing up.
There have been a number of shifts in my 30+ years of counseling families and children. We’ve certainly never seen as many kids and adolescents struggling at any
point in my decades of doing this work. On the one hand, youth in this day and time are more skilled in naming their feelings. Sadly, they seem less skilled in navigating those feelings. I talk widely about emotional strength, including both - naming and navigating. It’s certainly helpful, and necessary, to build awareness in noticing and naming the feelings, but it can’t stop there. It’s equally important to have healthy coping skills on board to navigate those different emotions. Another shift I have seen is the pressure youth are experiencing - academically, athletically and relationally. Those pressures seem at an all time high, making the building of these emotional skills more important than ever.
Kids and parents report being overwhelmed by the current pace of life - academically, athletically and within so many other extra-curricular experiences. There is an unfortunate pressure on parents to enroll kids in youth sports at an earlier and earlier age, accompanied by the fear that they won’t be able to play at a competitive level down the road if they don’t develop enough mastery early on. Similarly, we see high school kids overwhelmed by the urgency to build a resume that will earn them a space in college, as well as scholarship money. Kids and families are often over-scheduled, which can set the stage for a number of emotional and relational concerns.
Understanding and empathy. The knowledge and the acknowledgment that it’s a hard time in history to be a kid and an adolescent. Our kids have so much coming at them. Equally so, kids need support and boundaries. Support that allows them to try new things and do hard things, rather than intervening and rescuing, which is tempting to do. We talk so often about how boundaries create security for kids. When we offer boundaries, whether that’s healthy limits on screen time or not allowing teens to use and abuse substances, we are prioritizing health over happiness.
Don’t forget the importance of enjoyment. Pressure and anxiety cause us to lose our warmth and joy. We can become so weighed down by the pressures of today, that our kids don’t experience the foundational ingredients of time together, laughter and play, enjoyment and relationship.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST MISCOMMUNICATION BETWEEN PARENTS AND CHILDREN?
I believe it is likely technology. We are bridging space between digital natives and those who had limited experience with technology. There’s much to learn for all parties involved.
IN WHAT WAYS ARE PARENTS INADVERTENTLY CAUSING MORE ANXIETY IN THEIR CHILDREN?
We talk often about how anxiety is contagious. Unfortunately, our anxiety as parents easily spills over on to the kids we love. The good news is that calm is equally contagious. If we learn to name and navigate our own anxiety, we can become the greatest agent for support and change on behalf of the kids we love.
WHAT ARE THINGS PARENTS CAN DO TO RAISE EMOTIONALLY-STRONG CHILDREN?
Practicing the 3 R’s (recognize, regulate, and repair) is a skill we will talk about in our classes over and over. We must allow the kids we love to sit in the front row throughout their development and watch these skills occur through the grown-ups they trust the most. It is one of the greatest gifts we could offer to their emotional development. Kids learn more from observation than information.
WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE BIGGEST STRENGTH IN TODAY’S YOUTH?
For all of the horrible things that emerged from this pandemic, there were a few good things. One of those being, in my opinion, the emphasis on youth mental health. I hate it took a global pandemic for us to turn our attention in this direction, but I’m thankful we are talking about and thinking about mental health and well-being in a brand new way. As I mentioned earlier, more youth than ever can name their feelings. We still have work to do, but that’s an important starting point.
ANY WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT FOR PARENTS?
Thanks to all the latest research, we now understand it’s possible for the structure of the brain to change over time. Neuroplasticity is one of the greatest discoveries of the last decades. That simply means you can teach an old dog new tricks (not that I’m calling any parents old).
I’m simply saying we can all learn new (and healthier) ways of being in the world - emotionally, relationally and spiritually. This not only impacts our children now, but their children, someday, as well.
At FRA, we believe service has an incredible power to transform lives - both those whom we serve and our own - and service life is woven into all parts of our school. Students have the opportunity to serve others locally within our community and the greater Nashville area and globally through mission trips and other experiences that develop skills, leadership qualities, and passion for others.
In August 2023, wildfires ravaged Maui, Hawaii, causing widespread destruction, power outages, blocked roads, and a record number of fatalities, surpassing any U.S. wildfire in the past century. In response to the devastation that swept Hawaii, current fourth-grade student, Caroline Kuck, stepped up to lead a bake sale to raise awareness and donations to fire victims. Caroline has a heart of service in and out of the classroom, as she always shows love to others, shows compassion, and does whatever she can to help.
BY SUSANNAH MILLAR, 4th Grade TeacherOver the course of the past two years, it has been my privilege to serve as Caroline's teacher. Caroline is an exceptional student, embodying a unique blend of kindness, resilience, and a genuine servant's heart. Her commitment to making a positive impact on the community was evident when she took the lead in organizing a bake sale to raise funds for the victims of the Maui fires. This initiative not only showcased her organizational skills but also highlighted her compassionate nature.
Caroline is a strong and empathic leader, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. When she observes a friend facing challenges, she is the first to offer comforting words of encouragement, coupled with a warm and reassuring hug. Her daily efforts to bring smiles to the faces of those around her contribute significantly to the positive and inclusive atmosphere in class.
Beyond her remarkable leadership and kindness, Caroline's enduring love for Jesus is a central aspect of her character. She consistently volunteers to lead devotions, bringing the love of Jesus into our classroom and touching the hearts of her peers. This spiritual dedication not only reflects her personal values but also enhances the overall sense of unity and compassion in our learning environment.
Caroline's multifaceted contributions extend far beyond academic pursuits, enriching the lives of her classmates and creating a community that values empathy, compassion, and faith. It has been truly inspiring to witness her growth and unwavering commitment to serving others over the past two years. I am confident that Caroline's compassionate and dedicated nature, coupled with her enduring faith, will continue to shine brightly as she continues through her years at FRA.
WHAT DRIVES DIVERSITY SUCCESS AT FRA?
FRA's diversity success is a result of past collective efforts by faculty, board members, leadership, students, and parents who recognized the importance of fostering community. As a steward, I aim to continue this legacy, making a meaningful impact before passing the baton.
We intentionally build and nurture a diverse educational community whose members learn and live alongside one another with mutual respect, displaying intellectual curiosity about differences, and demonstrating Christ’s message of love and inclusion.
HOW DOES FRA APPROACH DIVERSITY?
We approach diversity through three dimensions: providing"The Culture" for inclusive student environments, "The Experience"of involving faculty and parents to show our students, and "The Growth" to attract diverse families /candidates aligned with our inclusive mission.
We've initiated programs like the Culture Council, where students collaborate with administrators to shape our cultural environment. Additionally, initiatives such as FRAmily Matters foster mentorship between older and younger students, and specialized meetings promote inclusion and belonging.
HOW DO PARENTS AND FACULTY HELP SHAPE DIVERSITY?
A group called Diversity Parent Representatives collaborates with us to ensure our programs cater to parental needs and participation. We also conduct faculty sessions focusing on inclusion methodologies, following themes like GRACE—Gender, Race, Age/Ability, Culture, and Economic status—to integrate diversity into curriculum.
HOW DOES FRA ENHANCE DIVERSITY THROUGH GROWTH?
We've established connections with diverse feeder schools, facilitating growth in our community's diversity. Additionally, partnerships with educational institutions and participation in diversity conferences nationwide help us attract candidates and build pipelines for teachers of color.
WHAT ARE FRA'S ACHIEVEMENTS IN DIVERSITY INITIATIVES?
Last year, our community donated 33,000 diapers on Martin Luther King Day, benefiting 660 children in Tennessee. Collaborative efforts with organizations and feeder schools have enriched our community, and ongoing programming impacts both our students and the Greater Nashville Community.
WHAT ARE SOME FUTURE FRA DIVERSITY MILESTONES?
Continuous growth is a priority as we aim to expand our reach, engage more families and candidates. Our goal is for our community to reflect the love of Christ on our campus.
“This year, I chose water for my AP concentration. I wanted to explore water’s importance in life through my paintings and drawings. I have especially enjoyed painting water reflections because I think they are beautiful. Dr. Thornton has helped me a lot throughout this process, and I appreciate her guidance in brainstorming ideas and creating new pieces.”
As a theater director, my fascination with the world beyond the final curtain has been a lifelong inquiry, echoing back to the days when I pondered the fate of my beloved characters. What transpires in the lives of these characters after we bid them farewell and the curtain closes? Are they content with the resolutions we witnessed, or does life propel them into an unending quest for something new?
This fall, our upper school students entered "Into the Woods," a production that has captured my heart for its profound exploration of what happens after the traditional "happily ever after." This musical delves into the complexities of maintaining happiness once dreams are realized, questioning the very essence of this elusive emotion. Can we truly grasp and retain joy, or is it a transient state, forever slipping through our fingers?
The woods in this production serve as both a metaphor for life's journey and a literal manifestation of the age-old idiom "in the woods," symb olizing a sense of being lost or facing ambiguity. The narrative unfolds as characters navigate their personal woods, confronting trials, adversity, and successes to discover their true selves. Often, this transformative journey requires stepping beyond familiar boundaries, embracing risks, and venturing into the un known —a journey into the woods.
In the exploration of happiness, the production poses fundamental questions. How do we evaluate happiness? What do we truly want? Through the tapestry of trial and error, success and failure, the characters encounter happiness as a nuanced and ever-changing entity. It becomes evident that happiness is not something to be possessed but rather a welcomed guest at life's party. The duration of its stay depends on our ability to be hospitable an d openhearted.
The thematic arc of "Into the Woods" underscores the cyclical nature of human desires and aspirations. The production begins and concludes with a "wish," emphasizing the perpetual nature of the human journey. Once one wish is fulfilled, a new adventure beckons, compelling the characters and, by extension, the audience to embark on another transformative adventure.
As our upper school theater director, I find immense joy in bringing this intricate exploration to the stage and to our students. It is an honor to see our students resonate with these characters, their struggles, and their journey for happiness, prompting reflection on each of their adventures and what they are chasing through the metaphorical woods of life.
"Into the Woods" serves as a poignant reminder that life's richness lies in the attainment of wishes and the continuous pursuit of self-discovery and growth. It challenges us to embrace the
uncertainties, risks, and joys accompanying the journey, urging us to extend a warm welcome to happiness as it graces our lives.
For our upper school students, I have seen them grow in artistry, friendship, and charisma over our months of rehearsals and performances. I could not be more proud of how each student has blossomed and found the happiness they will carry beyond their time in our halls. The journey is the ultimate destination—a perpetual adventure for all seeking more extraordinary things.

II feel so lucky to call FRA my school, and I can't help but be so thankful for the incredible experiences that have shaped me into who I am today. From my first day in Pre-K4 to my current place as an 8th grader, my time at this school has been a whirlwind of growth, lessons learned, and unforgettable moments. Many of my memorable moments have happened in the classroom and on the sports fields.
Since the 5th grade, athletics have played a significant role in my life. I've dedicated myself to cross country, basketball, and track, but basketball has become my main passion. The fast pace of the game, combined with the dynamics of different teammates, has made it my favorite. Each season, I step onto the court with new faces beside me, and the feeling of being encouraged yet challenged keeps me coming back.
In cross country and track, I've understood the value of growth and pushing through tough times. The endurance developed on the courses has translated into a resilience beyond sports. It's taught me never to give up, even when faced with the most challenging hurdles in life.
Throughout these teams and sports, coaches like Coach Knight, Coach Zenner, and Coach Sanders have been instrumental in my athletic journey, guiding me through track, cross-country and basketball seasons. Their direction and mentorship pushed me to excel and, more importantly, encouraged me to give my best, not only in sports but also in middle school.
In basketball, the encouragement we share as teammates is undeniable. Beyond our team, the guidance from older teammates who had helped me navigate middle school was important to me. I try to be a friend to my teammates younger than me, just as I had with older friends, sharing techniques and methods for success and offering advice beyond the court.
One of my most satisfying athletic memories was earning a varsity letter while running with the Cross-Country team this past season. Running is both mentally and physically challenging, and I was proud to be part of this team. We pushed each other while working hard and improved our times throughout the season.
FRA has always taught me how to be optimistic. The optimism I’ve been shown fuels me to always do my best. The joy I’ve seen from my teachers and coaches has pushed me to try new things and challenge myself in classes.
My academic journey has allowed me to dive deeper and ask questions. I have cherished every moment in Coach Hart's algebra courses and Ms. Longworth's sixth-grade history class. These classes made learning so much fun and have equipped me with the skills necessary to do well in upper school. The fun and engaging environment in these classes has also set the foundation for good study habits, preparing me for my next year as a freshman.
My FRA experience has been special because of all the people who have poured into me. Mentors like Coach Hart and Mr. McCauley have played a pivotal role in helping me grow. They've not only helped me excel academically but have also helped me develop qualities as a leader and a positive role model for others.
One of the most profound lessons I've learned from middle school is that you always have a chance to make a better impression and become a better version of yourself. I’m so grateful to have teachers and coaches who always want to help me become the best version of myself.
Congratulations to Paul Allen, President of Wealth Strategies Partners, on being appointed to the board of Harpeth Conservancy—a science-based conservation organization committed to ensuring clean water and healthy ecosystems for Tennessee rivers.

PICTURED / Left to right, top to bottom: Summertown Buchannan Baskin, Charlotte Marie Ponchillia, Lyla Greer Stanley, Carson Bradley Alvarado, Kittredge Boyd, and Cruse Douglass CantrellReturning to FRA as a parent has been such a full circle experience. It’s given us a new perspective on the lasting impact that the school has made on our lives and will on our entire family.
Cameron attended FRA for his Pre-K 4 through 12th grade years, and I began in the upper school, where we met. From hanging out under the stairs in the upper school between classes to cheering for Cameron from the sidelines during football games and walks at Radnor Lake after school, FRA is woven into so much of our story. Now, that story continues with our boys.
We love that FRA still has that unique, close-knit community that we resonated with during our time at the school. At the same time, there is a new and exciting air with all the positive changes that have been made. From the facilities to the administration and current families, there is an energetic atmosphere every time we arrive on campus. It feels like coming home.
We look forward to Remy and our family making memories and lifelong friends in all the years ahead as we continue our legacy at FRA!

HOMECOMING WEEK CELEBRATION | Students pre-kindergarten through grade 12 celebrated homecoming week with themed dress days, games and activities, movie night on The Hill, senior greeting, a pep rally, and a parade. Our alumni enjoyed a tailgate and the All-Alumni Reunion Party.
II trust this message finds you well. As we reflect on the conclusion of the 2022-23 fiscal year through the following pages of our Report on Philanthropy, I am moved to express my deepest gratitude for the extraordinary support and generosity that defines the heart of Franklin Road Academy.
In this report, you will find enthralling summaries of the Unique Moment in Time capital campaign, our Annual Fund, named endowed funds, scholarships and awards, alumni giving, and special events such as the FRA Golf Classic and Stars and Guitars. These endeavors, fueled by the time, talent, and treasure generously given by our community, have empowered us to fulfill our school's mission—a mission that is unique, compelling, and drives us to pursue excellence in all aspects of the experience here.
Last year was a testament to the remarkable community of which we are privileged to be a part. The overwhelming support from parents, alumni, and friends has not only propelled us forward but has created a dynamic and exciting school and community experience on our campus.
Philanthropy, as highlighted in this report, is a catalyst that differentiates good schools from great ones. Your investment in our school—whether through financial contributions, volunteerism, or advocacy— has made a tangible impact on the lives of our students. We take pride in the fact that, over the last five years, our annual fund has averaged over 90% parent participation, as compared to just over 60% nationally. This is a testament to the remarkable commitment of our community to the mission of Franklin Road Academy.
In this report, you will read moving testimonies from current families, alumni, and others about why they choose to support the school philanthropically. Their accounts echo a common theme—they believe in the mission of our school, witnessing the unwavering commitment to excellence in the daily delivery of that mission. The diverse learning experiences, the strength of our inclusive Christian community, and the opportunities provided for students to pursue their passions are just a few examples of the returns on the community's investment in our school.
I extend my deepest appreciation to our board of trustees and our leadership for their faithful service to our school through their tireless support and guidance. Their dedication ensures that our students and families benefit from the strong leadership that blesses our school. Additionally, a heartfelt thank you to our development and communications teams, who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure our school has the resources needed for an excellent student experience.
The collective efforts of our community have left an indelible mark on our school, and the progress witnessed on our campus has been nothing short of remarkable. I am humbled by God’s faithfulness and live in hopeful anticipation of what lies ahead. Thank you for your unwavering partnership with us.
With deepest gratitude,
Sincerely,
Adrienne, Richard, Kaylee and Duncan
YYears ago, when we chose FRA for our children, the school’s mission truly resonated with us. FRA's commitment to values, educational excellence, and the promise of a nurturing and supportive environment were pivotal in our decision. Today, as we reflect on our decision and consider whether our children see FRA through the same lens, we find that while their interests and activities have evolved, the bedrock of stability, excellence, and sense of home that FRA offers remains a constant in their lives.
Over the year, we’ve witnessed firsthand the positive evolution of our FRA experience. The most significant transformation has been observing our children's growth from curious children to confident teenagers navigating the complexities of life. It isn’t always smooth sailing, as in every family, but being part of a community that grows and evolves with us has been invaluable.
Looking forward, the prospect of FRA's future excites us, particularly its infrastructure development. Beyond bricks and mortar, integrating new technologies and expanded educational opportunities will enhance the teaching and learning environment. FRA values fostering an atmosphere where students excel academically and thrive creatively and personally.
FRA is more than just a rigorous academic curriculum or an array of extracurricular activities. The strong sense of community defines FRA—a place where students aren’t just taught but where they feel supported and encouraged by peers and
educators. That sense of belonging empowers them to embrace their potential fully and prepare them for the road ahead.
To our family, giving extends beyond mere financial contributions. It's about contributing to the betterment of an institution in ways that reverberate throughout the larger community. By supporting FRA, we aim to contribute to an environment that benefits current students and creates a foundation for future generations because it's more than just a school—it's a community dedicated to shaping young minds and fostering a culture of excellence and compassion.
Our support for FRA stems from a belief in its mission and a desire to play a role, however small, in providing the tools for students to thrive and succeed. As our journey with FRA continues, we remain grateful for the values instilled; the transformations witnessed, and the enduring sense of community that makes FRA a home away from home for our family and countless others, not just today but that will endure for the many generations to come.
Dear FRA Alumni,
The 2022-2023 school year was full of encouraging alumni gatherings, bringing people together with friendship and gratitude for all that FRA means to the alums. It was an honor to serve on behalf of alums through a year of growth, fellowship, and giving back.
The Alumni Association grew last year with increases in giving of time, talent, and treasure, showing support for FRA. The gift of time was evident in celebrations and connecting with fellow alums. The gift of talent was exemplified by the number of volunteers serving on a committee, speaking in a classroom, or showing up to support our school community functions. Lastly, the gift of treasures showcased alum generosity as they contributed to FRA, often in honor of the faculty that spoke into their life or for a program they enjoyed, and mostly to join their fellow alums on Day of Giving to support their alma mater.
FRA is only as strong as our alumni, and supporting the school is a testament to what the FRA means to you, too.
I look forward to seeing what our alumni do for FRA next year.
All the best,
“I give back to FRA because my memories of my time in high school there are priceless. It was such a supportive, loving, and caring place and a lot of fun, too! The teachers and administration were amazing, and so many of them are still positively impacting students. I support FRA financially to show my gratitude and help future generations have the same wonderful experience I had.”

II want to take this opportunity to thank our phase II capital campaign early investors, both new supporters and those who made commitments to the initial campaign, many of whom even doubled their commitment this time around. Your incredible generosity has accelerated our timeline, enabling us to open the lower school turf playfield in October and complete the exit road off the back of campus onto Harding Pike. We continue to meet one-on-one with potential supporters in the hopes of securing the funding needed to construct a new upper school academic building and create a greenspace and great lawn in the middle of the campus where the current building resides.
Our focus for generations, as well as throughout both phases of this capital campaign, has been to create spaces that enhance our ability to be together and strengthen our community. At FRA, we provide an exceptional academic experience and extraordinary relationships between our teachers and students. Our goal is to ensure that all of our spaces represent the incredible work on our campus every day and elevate our student experience.
If you would like to get involved in this work and become a capital campaign investor, please contact me anytime to
Great schools are always in the process of becoming. These transformational initiatives have undoubtedly enhanced how we deliver our mission and secured our foothold as the best school in Nashville!
These generous commitments were received as of January 31, 2024.

AAs proud grandparents, having our grandchildren at FRA brings us immeasurable joy and a sense of continuity. It's incredible to see our grandchildren, Elizabeth, Patton, and Lincoln, walk the same halls where our children, Courtney, Isaac, and Nathan, once thrived. Knowing the transformative journey my children experienced here and seeing the remarkable opportunities that unfolded in their lives following their FRA years fills us with pride.
Even though it's grown in size, FRA has maintained that intimate, close-knit atmosphere that first drew our family in. The school has consistently nurtured academic excellence and instilled invaluable life skills, fostering socially and morally successful individuals. The positive experiences of my children, the love, and the support they received—it's all repeating itself with our grandchildren.
Over the years, we’ve witnessed FRA evolve in size, infrastructure, and programming, consistently standing at the forefront of educational excellence. Yet, amidst these changes, one thing has remained constant—the pervasive kindness. The culture of love and support, the commitment to drawing out the best in each child, has only grown stronger. Looking ahead, what excites us most about the future of FRA is the emphasis on programs that create a nurturing environment where children feel seen, heard, and valued. There is a focus on equipping them with academic knowledge and life skills, instilling confidence, and a desire to embrace
opportunities and engage with the world around them.
FRA is unique with the blend of academic excellence, the courage to embrace faith openly, and the values it instills in each student. FRA’s reputation is a testament to its offerings, but more so, it's about its profound impact on shaping individuals. Our children, and now our grandchildren, have been deeply influenced by the values lived out at FRA, which extend far beyond the academic realm.
Our experience at FRA can be defined by gratitude, a sense of security, and expectancy. We are so grateful for the school's daily efforts to create an environment that ensures safety and security for our children. And we are expectant for the promising futures our grandchildren will undoubtedly find here. Supporting FRA through philanthropy is our way of affirming our belief in the mission and its impact on shaping future leaders. Philanthropy can look different for each person, but to us, it is about recognizing institutions and causes close to our hearts and taking action. It's not just about monetary donations but about contributing time, prayers, and resources to support future generations' growth and betterment.
FRA will always hold such a special place in our hearts because it has encouraged our children, grandchildren, and even the two of us to look beyond ourselves. It's a community dedicated to nurturing and fostering leaders who will shape the future. Our support for FRA reflects our commitment to its mission and our faith in the hearts and minds it's shaping.

TTwo years ago, when we decided to enroll our children at FRA, we didn’t just find a school—we discovered a community that resonated with our values and aspirations for our kids' futures.
Our family was moving from Louisville to Nashville, and when we arrived to tour FRA, the warmth and kindness were immediately palpable. Initially, we were looking for our son, Ean, but little did we know we would also be excited and ready to enroll our daughter, Lilly as well. The curriculum, mission, and blend of values and spirituality within a co-ed setting all felt like the perfect fit.
For the last year and a half, watching our children evolve at FRA has been the most rewarding experience. Ean found his passion in sports and extracurricular activities, becoming deeply involved and excelling academically. We have seen him grow into a student leader, expanding his athletic talents and emotional intelligence, which has been truly remarkable.
On the other hand, Lilly has explored her creativity and drive within the classroom, embracing new experiences and challenging herself academically. Although moving schools for any child can be daunting, FRA embraced and nurtured them, shaping them into the best versions of themselves.
FRA differentiates itself in many incredible ways, but its heart is the most important to us. The sense of belonging, the welcoming campus, and the genuinely caring faculty are unparalleled. We can quickly sum up our experience here: loving, embracing, and supportive. We’ve been welcomed into a resilient community that we feel isn’t only shaping our kids into the best they can be but our family as well.
Looking ahead, we are already excited for Ean and Lilly’s futures after witnessing the achievements of older students and knowing that our children are supported by a community that thrives on love and achievement. They're being prepared holistically— for college and beyond. By supporting FRA, we’re supporting a mission unique to Nashville, and through our investment, we get the privilege of seeing it impact students, families, and our world at large. We want to teach the importance of philanthropy to our children and ensure that a place so dear to us continues to thrive.
We want to support causes and places close to our hearts, like FRA, which stands for values of kindness and connection. FRA's growth aligns with our aspirations, making it a natural choice for our support. It's where our children flourish and will continue to grow, and we're proud to invest in their future and the generations to follow them.
"By supporting FRA, we’re supporting a mission unique to Nashville, and through our investment, we get the privilege of seeing it impact students, families, and our world at large."
