from Mr. Hatcher's Desk Dear FCS Families: Peter is given quite the hard time as a central part of the New Testament.

Of course, there are a lot of interactions recorded involving him. We read more about him than we do the others. Reading about him many years later, it is often rather easy to "armchair quarterback" his life and choices.

How difficult must it have been to leave his fishing nets and follow some strange man who called out to him?

Or to step out of that boat onto a raging sea?

What would it be like to stand before thousands to declare Christ the true Messiah?

Each day, a lot of Peters walk through our hallways. There are Andrews, Pauls, Lydias, and Chloes as well. Foundational to our mission at FCS is the raising up of the next generation of cultural and spiritual leaders.

Tomorrow's impact is built by the impact on these students today. What a great privilege it is to be able to engage your students in that way! We are so thankful for all our families and the great partnership we have with you as we raise up these future leaders.

The Fall of Rome Dr. George Grant, September 2021 The movement of barbarians into the Holy Roman Empire is typically called the "Dark Ages" or the "Middle Ages," as if it’s a parenthesis between the glory of Antiquity and the marvels of Modernity. William Manchester wrote a work of propaganda called "The Flickering Light in the Midst of Oppressive Darkness." But the truth is, the contrast between darkness and light isn’t what many historians suppose.

The old system of Antiquity required a careful stratification of society between those who had wealth and power and those who labored to make them wealthy and powerful. There was specialization in learning where people were locked into a particular track with little movement between them. But with the new local vitality, social mobility was wider, and apprenticeship processes were codified to allow people to move up and have opportunity.

So, while a whole new system was put in place that was relational and feudal, the old world remained connected relationally. That connectedness provided a sense of how the new world could move forward.

Out of the old pagan world of Rome came a new type of civilization in which families mattered, identities were tied to the soil and family; poetry emerged along with literature, art, and architecture; and and a flowering took place of freedom and opportunity. It was a new thing that sprang forth.

The fall of Rome and the Dark Ages were actually the rising of a new day and an enlightenment for the whole world to the uttermost parts of the earth. May God teach us to learn and apply these lessons.

From Franklin Classical School Players: Franklin Classical School Players will hold auditions for the roles of "Gavroche" and "Little Cosette" for our spring production of Les Miserables (Student Edition). Gavroche should be a boy who can play a 10-12 yearold, and the character of Little Cosette should look 6-10 years old. Both characters sing solos in the musical.

We are also looking for a set designer for our fall production, The Comedy of Errors by William Shakespeare.

This person will work with the director to set the vision and lead a team of students in creating it. This is a paid position. Those interested can contact Mrs. Melissa Austin at maustin@franklinclassical.com.

PSAT The PSAT will be held on Wednesday, October 13. This exam is required for 10th and 11th grade student scholarship consideration. The demographic portion of the exam will take place on test day, instead of on a prior day as in years’ past. Students must arrive by 7:15 am.
