Eagle Scout Builds Clothing Storage for Ty’s House Community Center

It was while volunteering in the Hard Bargain neighborhood in December 2023 that Trevor Abruzzo, an Eagle Scout from Troop 135, learned of the organization’s need for a community closet.

Ty's House, a community center located in the Hard Bargain neighborhood of Franklin, offers "classes, events and an internet café where children and adults can have access to computers and the internet,” according to the website. The center also hosts educational programs and is available to be rented for community events.

After learning about this need, Abruzzo planned to build and install a clothing storage unit for his upcoming Eagle Scout project. He first studied the preexisting food pantry so he could build the closet to match it.

"We looked at the pantry that was already there, made a blueprint for the closet and a list of materials, and went to the Home Depot in Franklin to fundraise," Abruzzo said. "The Home Depot actually donated materials for most of my project. We were very, very thankful for that."

Out front, there stands a community library and a food pantry And now, Ty's House also features a community closet

As he grew up, Abruzzo's family always encouraged the importance of giving back to the community He began volunteering from a young age, stuffing backpacks at GraceWorks and filling food bags at Second Harvest Food Bank and Feed My Starving Children He later volunteered with One Generation Away and the Hard Bargain Association during his high school years

"I was raking leaves down the street, and when I got back, my mom told me that Ty's House needed some clothing storage out front," Abruzzo said HBA leaders had been discussing the idea of a clothing pantry since the food pantry was finished in partnership with Historic Presbyterian Church, so when Abruzzo offered to build it, they jumped at the opportunity.

“I’ve never seen an actual clothing pantry,” said Derrick Solomon, executive director of HBA. “How do you keep the items safe from weather, what does that look like?”

Danielle Moore, HBA’s Community Engagement and Housing specialist, said the organization had already partnered with local schools to offer clothing to students in need, but a freestanding clothing pantry in the Hard Bargain neighborhood would fill a different set of needs

“[It’s] a great idea to put a closet not just in the school, but somewhere that anybody could just drive up and not feel pressure, ” Moore said “Something just real quick where they could drive up and get what they need and drive off and just be blessed ”

With help from his fellow Troop 135 Scouts, Abruzzo assembled the closet They spent time painting the closet with colors that would match Ty's House When it was finished, they brought it to Ty's House, cemented the base of the cabinet into the ground, and drilled the top on

“It just turned out to be a really good project that we can use for generations to come, ” said Solomon “We’ve noticed an uptick of people coming out, whether they were giving to the clothing pantry or rather needed some items ”

Ty's House Community Center and the services it provides are just one part of HBA's vision to preserve the historic Hard Bargain neighborhood

"I'm very happy I was able to do this, and I think it will be a great way to give back to the community. I hope it can be a resource for people that need it," Abruzzo said.

The closet bears a plaque that reads: "Whoever has two shirts should share with the person who has none, and whoever has food should do the same. " This verse is not only fitting for the clothing pantry, but the food pantry located nearby.

The closet accepts donations of new men ' s, women ' s, and children's underwear and undershirts, as well as clean, gently used clothing, shoes and coats in season In-person donations of the above items can be made at Ty's House Community Center, 608 Mt Hope St, Franklin Online donations are also accepted at hardbargain kindful com
