Head of School | President Thank you for joining us this evening as we celebrate the themes of leadership and legacy.

How do we both pay tribute to leadership, a quality associated with the present, while also honoring legacy, a characteristic associated with the past? At what point do the past and present converge?

Reflecting on what continues to motivate us, 17 years after first opening our doors, is the weight of safeguarding our Jewish legacy while guaranteeing its future.

Frankel Jewish Academy’s foundation rests on our steadfast commitment to enriching both intellect and faith. Our charge is to motivate, challenge and support our students during their individual Jewish journeys.

As a school for the entire community, our denominational diversity is a badge of honor, where tradition and values underpin our Judaic curricula, and Zionism is venerated. Those tenets make this year’s honoree, Dr. Jeffrey Devries, most appropriate.

A founding board member of the school and alumni parent, Dr. Devries lives his life by the ideals set forth in our mission. His commitment to education and deference for Torah values are equally renowned. He leads by example and models the life we strive to live.

Rabbi Azaryah Cohen Head of School Rabban Gamaiel I, a prominent authority in the Sanhedrin of

the Common Era’s first century, explains that efforts selflessly undertaken to benefit the community will endure because it’s our ancestors’ merits that propels us toward success.

Therefore, leadership cannot develop in isolation because its development requires the efforts of those who came before us.

It is their torch we carry and sustain. That is where legacy and leadership converge — that is our mission.

As FJA’s 15th graduating class prepares to cross the threshold into adulthood, we ask our students to emulate people like Dr. Devries, and look forward as the Class of 2017 one day assumes the mantle of leadership we celebrate this evening.

The Frankel Jewish Academy is a high school that functions as both an academic and religious institution. It is built upon a dual curriculum of the highest-level college preparatory general studies and classical text-based Jewish studies while operating within a framework of Jewish law.

Our mission is to provide an environment that both educates toward and engenders an appreciation of living a traditional Jewish lifestyle, a relationship with God, and a commitment to the Jewish people, the State of Israel, and the United States.

We envision our graduates acquiring an appreciation for the values of Torah and Western Civilization that will empower them to become leaders of the Jewish community and society at large.
