Editorial Un destino náutico de primera clase Esta publicación de la Consejería de Turismo expresa el firme deseo del Gobierno de Canarias de reforzar entre el público general el conocimiento y reconocimiento de la extensa oferta de productos y servicios náuticos de las Islas Canarias, las competiciones y torneos de distintas disciplinas deportivas de prestigio internacional que se celebran en las Islas, así como de los deportistas canarios que participan en las principales competiciones a nivel nacional e internacional. La revista lleva el nombre del sello Islas Canarias Water Sports Experience cuyo objetivo es promocionar y difundir todas las actividades que se pueden practicar en las Islas, conforme a la estrategia de promoción diseñada para dar a conocer la excepcionalidad del Archipiélago como destino náutico. Dentro de esta estrategia de promoción se encuadra el programa de patrocinios de la Consejería de Turismo en eventos y campeonatos náuticos de relevancia internacional que se celebran en sus costas. En paralelo a los centros de perfeccionamiento, la existencia de centros de iniciación y variados establecimientos dedicados a los deportes de mar, unido a las facilidades de clubes y federaciones, convierten a las Islas Canarias en el escenario ideal para fundirse con el mar en una experiencia única.

A first-class nautical destination Tourism Council answers the Government of the Canary Islands’ wish to reinforce among the general public the knowledge and recognition of the extensive offer of nautical products and services available in the Canary Islands, the competitions and tournaments of different sport disciplines of international prestige which take place in the Islands, as well as the Canarian sportsmen and sportswomen who participate in the main national and international competitions. The magazine is named after the Canary Islands Water Sports Experience brand whose aim is to promote and spread all the activities that can be carried out in the islands, following the strategy designed to promote the exceptional qualities of the Archipelago as a nautical destination. Within this promotion strategy we find the sponsorship program of the Tourism Council for nautical events and championships of international relevance which take place in its coasts.

Together with improvement centers, the existence of centers for beginners and an array of companies dedicated to water sport activities, as well as the facilities offered. This publication of the y clubs and federations, make the Canary Islands the ideal scenario to unite with the sea in an unique experience.

Canary Islands Water Sports Scuderia was born with the object of reinforcing the general public’s knowledge and recognition of the effort and trajectory of the Canarian sportsmen and sportswomen who participate in the main national and international competitions, as well as competitions of international relevance which are held in the Islands’ waters. The main objective is to promote the unequalled tourism offer of the Canary Islands among other elite destinations for the practice of water sports.

The wealth of this tourism destination and the possibilities offered by its diverse nautical conditions, as well as optimum weather conditions for the practice of wtaer sports, are well known by sailing, windsurfing, diving and other professionals.

Even so, this offer does not hold the recognition it deserves among the great public, so for this reason the Government of the Canary Islands has started the Islas Canarias Water Sports Scuderia.

This initiative tries to unite all the first-class sports and human assets that the island has to offer, embodied by the Canarian elite sportsmen and sportswomen in all the water sports categories.

A thrilling season Between the month of April and the beginning of November, numerous competitions and tournaments take place in various points of the Archipelago which place the Canary Islands in the point of view of water sport lovers. With and ambitious calendar, the public can enjoy a great selection of high quality events sponsored by the Government of the Canary Islands through the Tourism Council.

Some fishing tournaments have already taken place, inaugurating the new season, among the early birds is the V World Sport Fishing Championship Surf Casting and Anchored Boat, which took place in the Llanos de Aridane (La Palma), whose brilliant champion was Julio Castro Rodríguez in both the categories. During the first half of July and organized by Marina La Gomera, the X Deep-Sea Fishing Championship Isla de La Gomera takes place, an event that attracts numerous ships from around the world.

ntre los meses de abril y noviembre son múltiples las competiciones y torneos que ponen a las Islas Canarias en el punto de mira de los aficionados a los deportes de mar.

Con un calendario ambicioso, el público puede disfrutar de numerosos eventos de alta calidad y que cuentan con el patrocinio del Gobierno de Canarias, a través de la Consejería de Turismo.

Algunos torneos de pesca ya han tenido lugar, inaugurando la nueva temporada. Entre los madrugadores está el V Open Mundial de Pesca Deportiva Surf Casting y Embarcación Fondeada, que se celebró en Los Llanos de Aridane (La Palma), y que tuvo como brillante campeón a Julio Castro Rodríguez. En la primera quincena de junio y organizada por Marina La Gomera, tiene lugar el X Campeonato de Pesca de Altura Isla

de La Gomera, una iniciativa que congrega a decenas de embarcaciones de todo el mundo.

En las mismas fechas, en la isla de Lanzarote se celebrará la segunda edición de Rubicón Fishing Jigging Record, una competición de pesca creada para intentar batir el récord IGFA (International Game Fish Association). La temporada de 2010 contiene otros cuatro torneos de pesca que tienen el patrocinio del Gobierno de Canarias. Se trata de la VIII Marina Rubicón Marlin Cup, y el Trofeo de Pesca de Altura Puerto Calero, ambos en Lanzarote; además de los torneos de pesca de altura de Pasito Blanco y Puerto Rico, en Gran Canaria.

On the same dates, but in the island of Lanzarote, the second edition of the Rubicón Fishing Jigging Record, will take place. In the following months, windsurfing will turn the Archipelago, birthplace of many professionals of this sport, in the center of attention of millions of enthusiasts from around the world. The World Windsurfing Championship returns to the Canary Islands with three PWA (Professional Windsurfers Association) events. These international circuit events which will take place in Pozo Izquierdo (Gran Canaria), Sotavento (Fuerteventura) and Costa Teguise (Lanzarote), with their thrilling speed, spectacular free styles and world class races, guarantee a spectacular show in the water for the audience, and of course the participants, to enjoy.

The world championship will also take place in Fuerteventura, which will host the kiteboarding PKRA (Professional Kiteboard Riders Association) event, where those present will be able to enjoy watching the most radical free- stylers.

de aficionados de todo el mundo. El Campeonato del Mundo de Windsurf regresa a las Islas Canarias con la celebración de tres pruebas de la PWA (Professional Windsurfers Association).

Las pruebas del circuito internacional que tendrán lugar en Pozo Izquierdo (Gran Canaria), Sotavento (Fuerteventura) y Costa Teguise (Lanzarote), con velocidades emocionantes, estilos libres espectaculares y carreras de categoría mundial, garantizan un magnífico espectáculo sobre el mar para el disfrute de los espectadores y, como no, de los participantes.

También en Fuerteventura se celebrará el campeonato del mundo con la prueba de kiteboarding de la PKRA (Professional Kiteboard Riders Association) y los espectadores tendrán la ocasión de ver a los profesionales del estilo libre más radicales.

Las buenas temperaturas y los vientos son también un reclamo para los amantes del surf, que tendrá esta temporada varias citas ineludibles y de un alto nivel, entre ellas el Campeonato Mundial de Surf Islas Canarias Ocean Earth & Pro que se celebrará en noviembre, en El Confital, en la ciudad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Los amantes del surf tendrán otras dos citas surferas relevantes, esta vez en aguas de Lanzarote: Islas Canarias Santa Pro y Santa Pro Junior.

La vela, alma máter de los deportes náuticos en las Islas Canarias será la gran protagonista en septiembre y octubre, en Gran Canaria, Tenerife y Lanzarote con cuatro pruebas de un alto nivel de calidad y profesionalidad en sus diferentes clases: ORC 670, ORC 570, Regata y Crucero. El Trofeo S.A.R Príncipe de Asturias, que se disputará en la bahía de la ciudad de Las Palmas, abrirá de nuevo el circuito canario de regatas, a la que le seguirán el Trofeo S.A.R Infanta Cristina (Tenerife) y el Trofeo César Manrique (Lanzarote), que coincidirá con la celebración de la prestigiosa Prueba del Circuito Mundial Regata RC 44.

La temporada de fotografía submarina la abrió en abril el Open Foto Sub Sardina, en Gáldar (Gran Canaria). El alto poder de convocatoria de los certámenes de fotografía submarina que se celebran en distintos puntos del Archipiélago, confirman la extraordinaria riqueza de los fondos marinos de las Islas Canarias, que atraen cada año a los mejores fotógrafos submarinos del mundo. La isla por excelencia para la práctica del submarinismo es El Hierro, que este año celebrará la XIV edición del Open Foto Sub Isla de El Hierro. La élite de la fotografía submarina se dará cita una vez más en esta competición.

In April, the Open Foto Sub Sardina, in Gáldar (Gran Canaria) opened the underwater photography season. The high number of participants attracted to the various underwater photography competitions held in different spots of the Archipelago, confirm the extraordinary richness of the sea beds of the Canary Islands, which attract every year the best underwater photographers of the world. The island par excellence for the practice of diving is El Hierro, which this year hosts XIV edition of the Open Foto Sub Isla de El Hierro. The top underwater photographers will meet once more in this competition.

Islas Canarias Puerto Calero, un presente brillante y un futuro prometedor Bajan de un barco para subirse a otro y sobra entusiasmo en cada una de las competiciones donde se ponen a prueba. En pocos años, Islas Canarias Puerto Calero ha ido tomando posiciones en el competitivo mundo de la vela, y así lo confirma su triunfo como campeón del Trofeo de Portugal, primera prueba del Circuito Audi MedCup, en la GP42 Series que se celebró en mayo en aguas de Cascáis (Portugal). .

El Trofeo Portugal supuso el estreno GP 42 en una temporada que se prevé intensa y en la que el equipo canario combinará por segunda temporada consecutiva su participación en los dos circuitos de referencia en la vela mundial: Audi MedCup y RC44 Championship Tour. El equipo inició la temporada de 2010 en febrero, en aguas de Dubai, con su participación en el Al Maktoum Sailing Trophy, en el apartado de match race, seguida de la prueba de la RC 44 Austria Cup, y a continuación Portugal, donde consiguió revalidar su triunfo del pasado año.

El equipo del armador lanzaroteño José Antonio Calero, sólido y con un palmarés importantísimo, forma parte de la Islas Canarias Water Sports Scuderia. Un equipo ganador que este año sigue apostando por una tripulación totalmente canaria, de campeones olímpicos, de patrones exitosos, y de grandes conocedores de los secretos del mar y del viento.

Islas Canarias Puerto Calero, a brilliant present and a promising future They get off one boat to hop on to another, and there is an excess of enthusiasm in each of the competitions where they put themselves to the test. In just a few years, Islas Canarias Puerto Calero has been climbing positions in the competitive world of sailing, as confirmed by them winning the Portugal Trophy, the first event of the Audi MedCup Circuit, in the GP42 Series which took place in May in the waters of Cascáis (Portugal).

The Portugal Trophy was the GP 42 debut in a season which we predict will be intense and in which the Canarian team will combine for the second season in a row their participation in both the circuits of reference for world sailing: Audi MedCup and RC44 Championship Tour. A winning team which one more year believes in a totally Canarian crew, with Olympic champions, successful skippers, and those privy to the secrets of the sea and the wind.

“The professional values of sailing, the importance of teamwork and at the same time the nautical conditions offered by the Canary Islands for practicing this sport”, are some of the ideas highlighted by project manager, Daniel Calero, who is very satisfied with the whole team.

The Islas Canarias Puerto Calero boat main sponsor is the Tourism Council of the Government of the Canary Islands, whose aim is to promote the Canarian Archipelago as the nautical destination par excellence of the western world. Puerto Calero, their second main sponsor, is a marina in Lanzarote, which in its 25 years of history has gone all out to adapt to the latest innovations of the sector while continuously supporting high level nautical events.

“El triunfo nos ha dado confianza” importantísimo, el equipo está muy animado y nos ha dado mucha confianza.

Acaban de regresar de Portugal, ¿cómo ha sido la experiencia?

Ha sido muy emocionante, tuvimos muchas complicaciones para llegar a tiempo a la primera prueba del campeonato. Por diferentes motivos, el barco llegó a Portugal el mismo día en que empezaba la regata. Si a esto le añadimos los retrasos en los aeropuertos a causa de la nube de ceniza, la verdad es que pensábamos que no llegaríamos al primer día de la competición. Pero no fue así, eran tantas las ganas que teníamos de participar que llegamos a tiempo, ganamos las dos primeras pruebas y acabamos la competición con bastantes puntos de ventaja sobre el segundo clasificado.

¿Necesita el equipo un líder que entusiasme al grupo?

Es fundamental que haya alguien que dirija los pasos del equipo, en este caso tenemos a la familia Calero, tanto el armador José Antonio Calero, como a sus dos hijos, José Juan y Daniel, que son las personas que mueven los

En sus inicios, el equipo comenzó con poca experiencia, sin embargo, la familia Calero apostó por esta tripulación, con gente joven y preparada pero con poca experiencia en este tipo de barcos. En 2007 nació el proyecto Islas Canarias Puerto Calero que promociona el Gobierno

de Canarias, y poco a poco hemos ido dando pasos con el apoyo que significa el patrocinio de la Consejería de Turismo. Por eso, la victoria del MedCup en dos años consecutivos significa el reconocimiento a un duro trabajo durante años. ¿Qué destacaría de la vela como actividad deportiva?

Ese contacto que tenemos nosotros con la naturaleza,

poco más que agua y viento para navegar. Hoy en día hay muchísimas facilidades por parte de las federaciones y clubes para que cualquier persona pueda navegar. Las sensaciones que produce el desplazarse por efecto del viento en el mar es algo que en muy pocos deportes se puede dar. En las Islas tenemos todas las condiciones necesarias, y a los profesionales nos permite disponer de una base de entrenamiento en la que podemos prepararnos durante todo el año.

“Winning has given us confidence” You have just returned from Portugal, what has the experience been like?

It has been thrilling; we had several setbacks to reach on time for the first event of the championship. For various reasons, the boat arrived in Portugal on the same day the regatta was starting. If to this we add the delays at the airports due to the ash cloud, we really thought we would not arrive for the first day of the competition. But this was not the case, we won the first two events, the team was very concentrated, we won two more events and finished the competition with a lead of several points over the ship in second place.

Did you have hopes of winning again?

We went out to sea wanting to win, but we were unaware of the situation of our rivals. Every team has improved their boats and has made changes in their crew, nevertheless we have never had so much distance with the second place as in this competition.

What does being the winning team mean?

It’s a very important step for our morale, the team is very motivated and it has given us a lot of confidence.

Does the team need a leader to motivate the group?

It is fundamental to have someone who directs the team’s steps; in this case we have the Calero family, José Antonio Calero, the owner, as well as his two sons, José Juan and Daniel, the people who pull the strings of the team. My role is mainly carried out in the water, organizing, coordinating maneuvers

and having everything under control, that is my job.

Tell me about your trajectory In the beginning, the team started having little experience; nevertheless, the Calero family believed in this crew, made up of young and prepared people who had limitted experience in this type of boats. In 2007, the Islas Canarias Puerto Calero project was born, promoted by the Government of the Canary Islands, and little by little we have been taking positions with the help of the sponsorship by the Tourism Council. That is why winning the MedCup two years in a row is recognition of the hard work carried out for many years, proving this way that we are on the same level as any team. With hard work and friendship we have achieved something important for this project.

What would you highlight of sailing as a sport?

Our contact with nature, there is pretty much only sea and wind when we sail. Nowadays there are many facilities offered by the federations and clubs so that any adult or child can sail. The sensation you get when you sail through the water thanks to the wind is one not many sports can offer.

The Islands have all the conditions so that anyone can practice this sport. And for the professionals, the Canary Islands give us the chance of having a training base in the same place where we live in and where we can train throughout the year.

En el Archipiélago se está desarrollando una nueva estrategia para promocionar las Islas como destino preferente del turismo náutico en Europa, con el objetivo de fomentar, mejorar y consolidar la oferta de actividades de ocio de las Islas Canarias de forma sostenible, y posicionarlas como destino turístico preferente. A través de esta iniciativa, el Gobierno de Canarias quiere también atraer turistas apasionados por los deportes náuticos, y conseguir la captación de deportistas de élite interesados en establecer en el Archipiélago su centro de preparación y recuperación deportiva.

La nueva estrategia de promoción de la Consejería de Turismo tiene como objetivo situar a esta Comunidad como destino preferente frente a otros destinos turísticos, tanto por las características únicas del Archipiélago (clima y condiciones naturales) como por la calidad de sus servicios. An exceptional spot, El Confital Thanks to determination and effort of the organization, the surf championship celebrates its ninth edition In November, El Confital will once again be the host of the surf championship and a stop for those participants who aspire to win points in the qualifying events of the world male surf championship WQS. This sport event takes place this year between the 3rd and the 9th and is known as Islas Canarias Ocean & Earth Pro, with the Government of the Canary Islands, through the Tourism Council, and Ocean Earth as main sponsors.

The El Confital surf championship, which celebrates its ninth edition this year, has been possible thanks to the determination and effort of the team lead by Federico García, a surfer - of course-, and Dun Nunder. In the year 2000, the tour manger of the international federation, who knew the potential of Gran Canaria, encouraged him to present a proposal to hold the world championship qualifying event on the island. “We started working, the Australian brand liked the idea and we put in out offer in 2001”, explains García.

The first edition was held with the help of Dun Nunder and Ocean Earth towards the budget, and the sponsorship of the Las Arenas Mall.

“We did not approach public organizations, we financed everything ourselves because surfing was known but it did not have the recognition it has nowadays”. In those days, the idea was eyed critically “our capacity to organize a sporting event of these characteristics in Gran Canaria was questioned”, except for the City Council of Gran Canaria, who considered the proposal “an important endeavour”, he clarifies.

Proof of that is that we didn’t have chemical baths, we didn’t accredit the people, there weren’t perimeter areas for the contestants… well, there were lot of things lacking, but we have overcome them all”. With all these circumstances and the lack of support, the championship took place with 8 participants and a one star category.

“We didn’t have any experience but we passed the test, we proved our organizing skills, and the federation allowed us then to increase our category”.

This way the El Confital surf championship has been climbing positions throughout the years with the backing of the public and the support of the world of surf. “Nowadays all those detractors pat our backs and encourage us to continue”, explains Federico García, who highlights the importance of this sport competition. “We have excellent conditions, the waves of the El Confital bay are very special, it is an exceptional natural court and our climate is an advantage. All these factors, together with our eight years of experience, make this event worthy of the highest prestige”.

As in the last editions, the championship will be broadcast worldwide on-line. Last year, the event could be followed closely by enthusiasts from 80 countries. “You have to take into account that the Canary Islands, after Hawaii and Indonesia, are an important place for the world of surf. The Islands are the best place in Europe for surfing” stresses García.

The organizer doesn’t want to venture into telling us the names of the participants in this five star category event in which points and a 120,000 dollars are at stake. “I can tell you that Jonathan González, our biggest representative will definitely be present”. This professional obtained the first place in the Movistar Ocean & Earth Pro last year and was the winner of this event nine years ago.

Federico García highlights the exceptional conditions of the spot, the special wave of the El Confital bay, in an exceptional natural court, with a climate which favours the practice of this sport.

A family of surfers El Confital is synonymous with surf. It is a place of great natural beauty, located in the La Isleta peninsula it is a natural extension of the Las Canteras Beach. n las Islas Canarias son numerosos los lugares por descubrir a través de excursiones y rutas turísticas, un lugar donde se puede vivir la mejor fusión entre diversidad y unas condiciones idóneas para la práctica de actividades al aire libre, y donde los visitantes hallan un entorno perfecto para el desarrollo de su actividad preferida. Dentro del amplio abanico de posibilidades que presentan las Islas Canarias para la práctica de actividades náuticas, se hallan las excursiones marítimas, que permiten al visitante conocer lugares mágicos donde los volcanes crean escenarios y experiencias únicas.

La ruta marítima que proponemos en estas páginas transcurre a lo largo de la costa del sureste de la isla de Fuerteventura, entre Morro Jable y Gran Tarajal. Se embarca en el puerto de Morro Jable, al sur de la Isla, hacia la punta de Jandía donde está el faro del mismo nombre. Según se parte del puerto, tenemos frente a nosotros una costa de arenas blancas y justo encima el macizo montañoso de la península de

Jandía. Esta península desde el punto de vista biológico, geológico e incluso histórico ha sido considerada una isla dentro de Fuerteventura.

La península alcanza la mayor altura de la isla con el pico de La Zarza con 807 metros sobre el nivel del mar.

La cima del macizo es el punto donde se concentra buena parte de su biodiversidad. Una gran mayoría de los endemismos botánicos y de fauna de Fuerteventura se encuentran en esta zona, y una buena parte de la península está dentro del Parque Natural de Jandía, con 14.318 hectáreas. En este macizo, encontramos un paisaje más acantilado, con playas hermosas y alargadas como la de Cofete, con varios kilómetros de longitud y un mar más bravo.

The maritime route we propose in these pages moves along the south-east coast of the island of Fuerteventura, between Morro Jable and Gran Tarajal. You embark in the Morro Jable port, in the south of the Island, towards the punta de Jandia where we find the lighthouse with the same name.

As we leave the port, we have in front of us a whitesand covered coast and right on top the massif of the Jandia Peninsula. This Peninsula has been considered an island within Fuerteventura from the biological, geological and even historic point of view.

The Peninsula holds the highest point of the island with the pico de La Zarza at 807 meters above sea level. The peak of the massif is the spot where a great part of its biodiversity is concentrated. A great part of the endemic botanical species and fauna of Fuerteventura are located in this area, and a great part of the peninsula is situated inside the Jandia National Park, of 14,318 hectares. In this massif observe cliffs, with beautiful and long beaches such as the Cofete, with several kilometers and rough sea.

In the east side, directly in front of us, the sea hardly brings waves to the beaches, and right on top of them there are a few tourist resorts where visitors can enjoy heavenly natural and maritime surroundings. Then we pass by the southernmost point of the island known Punta del Jable where we find the Morro Jable Lighthouse. The word jable comes from the Norman period of Bethencourt, and derives from the French word sable, which means sand.

En la cara este, la que tenemos frente a nosotros, las playas tienen un mar casi sin oleaje, y justo encima de ellas se encuentran algunos complejos turísticos donde los visitantes pueden disfrutar de un entorno natural y marino paradisíaco. Pasamos por el punto más al sur de la isla denominado Punta del Jable donde aparece el Faro de Morro Jable. La palabra jable procede de la época normanda de Bethencourt, y deriva del término francés sable, que significa arena.

Desde nuestro punto de vista hacia el macizo, se abren los barrancos formados por otras épocas, cuando la isla tenía un clima más húmedo, como Butiondo, Esquinzo o Los Canarios entre otros. En esta costa, el aporte de jable ha formado una laguna de agua marina de poca profundidad separada del mar abierto por una franja de arena. Seguimos nuestro recorrido por la costa y dejamos atrás Costa Calma y el Itsmo de La Pared, que es la frontera natural con el resto de Fuerteventura. Cuentan las crónicas, que en la época de los majos un muro que cruzaba el itsmo dividía dos reinos que gobernaban la isla; al sur, en la Península de Jandía, el rey Guize y al norte el rey Ayoze. Hoy en día se conservan trozos de ese muro que dividía los dos territorios.

Continuamos la navegación frente a una costa con numerosas playas, algunas con núcleos de población como La Lajita, Tarajalejo y Gran Tarajal. En esta costa encontramos también Punta Paloma, donde el aspecto del acantilado se asemeja a una tarta con capas de nata y chocolate. Estos colores se deben a la erosión marina que deja al descubierto una sucesión de coladas de basaltos y traquibasaltos. El color blanco es fruto de la corrosión marina que reacciona con ciertos materiales volcánicos dando lugar a carbonatos, arcillas y sales de este color.

En Gran Tarajal terminaremos nuestro paseo marítimo pero antes debemos navegar hacia el acantilado de la Entallada donde se encuentra el Faro del mismo nombre. Después de esta maravillosa travesía por la costa de Fuerteventura, nuestro viaje termina en el puerto de Gran Tarajal.

These colours are due to the maritime erosion which uncovered a succession of flows of basalts and trachybasalts. The white colour is due to the marine corrosion which reacts with certain volcanic materials which produce carbonates, clays and salts in this colour.

We finish our maritime excursion in Gran Tarajal but before we must sail towards the la Entallada cliff with the lighthouse of the same name. After this wonderful trip, our journey ends at the Gran Tarajal port.
