WEEK 9 READING: PERSPECTIVE OF SYMBOLIC FORM

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection?

Durer establises three rules for perspectival projection, visualised as observing a painting or drawing as if looking through a window.

1: All orthogonal lines meet at a central vanishing point. This vanishing point is determined by the ideal position of the viewer, relative to the picture plane.

2: All parrallel lines share a common vanishing point. for example all lines that lie on the horizon vanish at the horizon.

3: All lengths are reduced as supposed distance from the viewer is increased.

Question 2: Describe homogenous space?

Homogenous space is Durer’s term for the hypothetical space that projections exist in. Within this homogenous geometric space all objects are reduced to a series of points. These points are individually identical i.e. homogenous. Relative to each other however, the points are differentiated by their position relative to other points.

By reducing objects to nothing more than relative positions homogenous space is constructed but never given space.

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2 This perspective was chosen to be open with no columns immediately in the foreground and the open space framed by the arch occupying an asymmetrical centre. This opennes corresponds to the feeling of wanderlust felt by Marco Polo as he arrives in a new location.

This view was chosen to constrast with the first view by bringing a column into the foreground to enclose the perspective and create a sense of claustraphobia corresponding to Marco Polo’s unease in an alien world.

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2 This scene is taken from the arrival of Marco Polo, still in the terminus. In this space the workers of the city mill about lazily while the figure in the midground wanders at the sight of a space craft.

Later in the text the city of Diomira transitions to a night market. The figures in this scene represent just one stall that sits in the foreground of the image while the figure in the background watches on. Marco Polo looks on in morbid curiousity as he leans around a column.

Question 1: IWhat is the difference between autographic and allographic practice?

Autographic and allographic practice are differentiated by the proximity of the original artist or author to the work produced. Autographic practice is found in art forms such as painting or sculpture.

Autographic practice produces work where the direct contact with the artist produces a unique and individual piece of work. Allographic practices produce notation that allow a work to be produced at great distance from the original author. Examples of allographic practices include musical composition or architechtural drawing.

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? (Maximum 100 words) Traditional architechtural techniques of representing a building have rapidly become outdated as new technologies change the way in which a building is occupied and utilised. The traditional techniques of representing a building are built upon presumptions of stability and fixed subjects. Modern cities however are now home to invisible streams of information that flow and change rapidly. New representational techniques are needed in order to both show the fields established by information networks and how the building will respond.
