Reclaiming Public Spaces And Fostering Social Inclusivity

How can ‘street saloon’ contribute to reclaiming public spaces and fostering social inclusivity?

As the night falls and cars disappear from the street, a fascinating transformation occurs - people emerge and take to the kerb. These impromptu gatherings redefine the streets, showcasing a different side of human behaviour.

Box Hill, a densely populated area with a large Chinese population. In the central precinct provides a wonderful public and commercial asset, drawing people to the area. The site a series of leftover city garde, divided by many busy roads. By inserting a bridge and reviving the original nature, street pub was incorporated in a interesting way.

This thesis wants to challenge the traditional boundaries of public space and revitalize the sense of identity on the street, and it aims to establish an inclusive and non-exclusive community. This project tries to create an architectural structure form to foster vibrant and inclusive public gathering places, resulting in an open street that feels like a “pub without walls.”

A Synergy of Architecture and Nature

The ramp house employs a three-tiered layout, splitting the space into three areas: east, center, and west, interconnected by a wheelchair-accessible ramp. This approach effectively mitigates the elevation differences between the east and west, creating an accessible living space. Moving from east to west, the entire area gradually transitions from dynamic to tranquil. The house is designed to accommodate a large family, considering the lifestyles and varying spatial needs of individuals of different ages. It includes three separate sets of bedrooms with bathrooms while preserving a central courtyard garden as the primary family activity area.

This design promotes continuity and inclusivity in living spaces.

Mixed-Use Tower Documenting

The proposed project is situated at the prominent junction of Lonsdale Street and Spring Street within the city of Melbourne, enveloped by the verdant environs of the local gardens. The design philosophy is profoundly influenced by these proximate gardens, and it is our aspiration to transpose the essence of these natural settings into vertical architectural elements throughout the edifice.

In accordance with the prescribed design parameters, the prospective tower is envisioned as a mixed-use complex, encompassing a premium office space spanning 46,800 square meters, a luxurious hotel facility covering an expanse of 25,200 square meters, and a podium with an area of 8,800 square meters. Furthermore, the structure is designed to incorporate three subterranean levels, purposed for functions such as vehicular parking, Back-of-House (BOH) amenities for the hotel, essential building infrastructure, and multifunctional spaces.

Like Barbican, Lofi Garden draws its inspiration from the world of Lofi music, embracing an aesthetic that’s intentionally imperfect and unpolished. It serves as a garden pavilion where a diverse array of gardens from Barbican come together, showcasing the residents’ passion for botany. Instead of static exhibits, Lofi Garden offers a dynamic, ever-changing natural space experience. These spaces will evolve and tell unique stories as people interact with them, while the display effects will shift with the seasons, creating a continuously evolving and immersive environment.

The waffle grid structure holds up the building and gives plants a place to climb. Underneath are slopes covered in plants, and the sunlight comes through the ceiling, making a shady relaxing spot with speckled light and shadows.

TAK WEN TEA HOUSE Tak Wan Tea House, located near Daci Temple in Chengdu and named by Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, combines Tang elements with elements of Bashu (the ancient name of Chengdu) native design while maintaining a modern touch. Taking advantage of features of Tang Architecture, black wooden bucket beams orderly stacking and protruding from the facade and the interior is rigidly symmetric. The ceiling outline is inspired by the shape of a pediment from a Sichuan traditional architectural archway and is supported by curved black wood beams that define intimate semi-private space on both sides of the hall.

The blue-and-white porcelain columns, adorned with intricate dragon and cloud motifs, are complemented by double-layer bamboo weaving windows and terrazzo flooring made of lapis lazuli. They harmonize with brass lights, hand-painted wallpaper, and a belt-driven fan ceiling, showcasing a blend of Eastern and Western art combined with traditional craftsmanship tailored to Chengdu’s climate. To provide a delightful experience in less time, an intelligent lighting system has been implemented, transitioning the space’s mood from warm white during the day to blue-red at night.

RESIDENTIAL INTERIOR GROUP WORK

The apartment, nestled in Shanghai’s former French Concession area, reflects the fusion of Chinese and Western lifestyles.

Paying respect to its history by uncovering the original wood structure and renovating the 50-year-old brick-wood structure. At the same time, a mezzanine with floor-to-ceiling windows and skylights is adopted to improve space efficiency and increase indoor lighting.

The space is divided into private and public areas. The left side houses the master suite with a bedroom, bathroom, wardrobe, and balcony, with a walk-in closet on the mezzanine. On the right, walls were removed to create an open-plan kitchen, connected to a living area, tea room, yoga space, terrace, guest room, and storage. The design embraces simplicity, featuring modern lines, white walls, and wooden floors, while a central black metal fireplace fosters a cozy ambience. A mix of old and new, Eastern and Western furnishings and a diverse collection of global treasures from clients add a vibrant touch to this harmonious space and cater to the lives of this multinational couple.

MEET LIN CASE CUISINE

The Fujian cuisine chef, longing for the flavors of his childhood home on Gulangyu, ,an UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, returns to open a home cuisine restaurant in a small red brick building with a courtyard. This space brilliantly combines nostalgia and functionality. The design is centered on maximizing light, with an inner green wall connecting interior and exterior spaces. Sliding doors seamlessly unite penthouses with the courtyard, blurring indoor and outdoor boundaries. The memories of childhood are reflected in the design language, incorporating Hokkien red brick elements, stained glass, blue-and-white porcelain, and old house red bricks repurposed as dining table tiles and courtyard decor.
