Born in Legnano in 1978, since a kid, Schultz has had two obsessions: painting and drawing. During his artistic journey, he has been experimenting different techniques, even the art of Tattoo. Today is considered one of the most brilliant Tattoo Artists in Italy and abroad. His studio, The Electrical Tattooing Artist, is an experience itself: a magmatic array of inspirations, put in obsessive order. Among all, his paintings stand out. To the young artist, in fact, painting is the best way to express himself, and he has been doing it relentlessly, working between Milan and London, where he spends much of his time. “I made a pact with the devil and now he owes me his soul…I never give up experiencing to get an answer… for example, sometimes ago I was drawn into skulls. I studied them …to me a skull represents the unavoidable desegregation of the society in which we live. … In all my paintings I want to express the waste. The waste of time, money , the waste of opportunities and, most of all, the waste of feelings, the most intimate and hidden ones. When it happens, emptiness prevails…inside and out of ourselves. “ On the 12th of December, Schultz’s artistic route comes to a turning point. His best friend attempts suicide. The deep connection with this person and the tragic event lead the artist to re- consider the meaning of the word hope. How strongly is hope related to the will to live? He comes to a conclusion that turns around the old saying,“ where there’s life, there’s hope”. For Shultz, where there’s no hope, there’s death. Where there’s no hope there’s a death

wish, at least. Because everything becomes meaningless. If a man has not dreams, expectations, the opportunity to plan a better life, the will to live can desert him, too. It happens to individuals as well as to the society itself. And today imaging the future is getting all the more impossible and when dreams are denied, this means death. The last Schultz’s work testifies his research in understanding this emotional distress in people’s life. His portrays represent the exact moment when the subject becomes aware of having lost his or her hope. They surrender to tiredness of living a dreamless life. To the certainty they are not comprehended as human beings and as artists.

“We are all running against a no-future, wasting the few good chances we are left with, “ Schultz says. “In my opinion, art, culture and curiosity are the only antidote, we have. I hope.”

MYSELF A walk in the shadow

Life is a short walk in the shadow seeking a non- belligerent cohabitation with our dark self, the one we fear probably most precisely because it’s the most sincere. By(e)Myself is the final goodbye given through Schultz’s portraits. These men and women, they all share a tormented life and the decision to end it. In By(e)Myself each portrait is a self portrait as well. A step into the shadow into the dark that gets all the more intense to the point where it becomes eternal light.
