Biblical Worldview formation at FPD

FPD Magazine I page 2 I fpdmacon.org

Coupled with strong academics, the cornerstone of an FPD education has always been a foundation of faith. FPD’s biblical integration goes beyond prayer, chapel, and the music played during morning carpool. It is part of the fabric of daily life at FPD. A biblical worldview enhances an FPD student’s overall educational experience and prepares them for the world in front of them. As part of FPD’s ongoing professional development, our faculty and staff recently studied Beyond Biblical Integration by Roger Erdvig. The book provides insight on “biblical worldview” and how it enhances a student’s education. During FPD’s teacher development on Wednesday mornings, our faculty and staff read and discussed the book to learn and grow together. Many of the concepts were already staples of the FPD experience, but the book provided a comprehensive perspective to discuss as a team. “Our staff has had Biblical Integration training before,” notes Kristen Kreutner, Director of Innovation, Instruction, and Curriculum, “but we wanted to be mindful to revisit such an important topic. The book offers Team FPD a common language to discuss biblical worldview.”

What is Worldview?

To start the study, Roger Erdvig’s book discusses the meaning of “worldview.” Erdvig describes worldview as “our approach to perceiving, interpreting,

and living in the world around us…

FPD Head of School

[this] includes our desires, our behaviors, and the propositions we hold true.” A worldview shapes the way we interpret situations. A biblical worldview is summarized in four keywords – Creation, Fall, Redemption, Glory. • Creation: God’s original design • Fall: all the ways creation has veered from God’s original design since the fall of man • Redemption: restoring things to their pre-fall position and purpose through the work of Christ • Glory: future restoration through Christ When lessons are taught from a biblical worldview, the academic concepts and teachings are enhanced. Students not only learn the concepts, they also learn how to reflect on them from the perspective of this framework. “Since students spend the majority of their week at school, the classroom experience becomes integral to the FPD Magazine I page 3 I fpdmacon.org

development of not only academic concepts but also worldview concepts,” comments Dr. John Patterson, FPD Head of School. “Therefore, to strengthen a biblical worldview, concepts of creation, fall, redemption, and glory are interwoven throughout each objective.” For example, history students explore moments in time not only from a discussion of facts but also how it relates to God’s creation, our fallen nature, and how things could be better. In science, students study God’s amazing creation of plants, animals, and the human body. In math, students learn how everything is designed with order and how they can use equations and their God-given critical thinking skills to solve real-world problems. Biblical worldview continues outside the classroom – into the hallways, afterschool activities, and community on campus.

For example, Erdvig states that math

How does Biblical Worldview correlate with strong academics FPD recognizes that in order for students to change the world for God’s glory (as stated in the FPD mission statement), they have to be able to be successful academically in college and in their careers. Therefore, strong academics, college preparation, and biblical worldview develop simultaneously during a student’s years at FPD. A biblical worldview expands on

ways that glorify God and serve others with Christ-like love.”

What about other worldviews?

Erdvig notes that participants in a study he conducted told him “exposure to people who did not share a biblical worldview motivated them to explore and refine their own worldview in greater depth.” FPD offers opportunities for students to explore other worldviews

More than personal gain When strong academics, a biblical worldview, and an awareness of

other worldviews are woven together, students realize there is more to the purpose of learning than simply obtaining knowledge for personal gain. FPD graduates know that they are “God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do,” (Ephesians 2:10). They have the foundation to stand firm in their beliefs, communicate them effectively, and serve others through their gifts

Example of Biblical Worldview in the Classroom Mr. Carpenter’s Calculus In math studies, biblical integration entails viewing God’s creation through mathmatical concepts and order. Students learn how to take those concepts and apply them to real-world scenarios to solve problems. Christ-like grace and love.” “A ‘whole-child’ comprehensive approach in a Christ-centered, academically-strong environment is invaluable,” concludes Dr. Patterson. “Roger Erdvig’s book has been a wonderful study for our teachers and administrators as we continue to grow and learn how to best serve our students so they can grow to be tomorrow’s leaders.”

Coach Spear’s Georgia History Class In Coach Lisa Spear’s Georgia History Class, students discussed colonists’ relationship with the Indians. Within this discussion, Coach Spear spoke of the Europeans’ desire to convert the Indians to Christianity. “This led to a great discussion about diversity and being ‘image bearers of Christ,’” remembers Coach Spear. The class discussed how diversity is a good thing and how all are children of God. However, because of the fall of man, every community has sinful behaviors or beliefs. As Christians, we are challenged to discern which behaviors are pleasing to God and lead others with Christ-like love.

Faculty Service Day During FPD’s Fall Faculty In-Service Day, FPD faculty and administrators enjoyed an afternoon serving in the community. Team FPD visited multiple ministries in Macon including the Ronald McDonald House, Jay’s Hope, Backpack Ministry, United in Pink, Rebuilding Macon, Oaks at Peake, and Campus Clubs. At each of these locations, they served in various ways such as painting wheelchair ramps, packing meals for Backpack Ministry, cleaning and decorating classrooms at Campus Clubs, and making crafts with the residents at Oaks at Peake.

Middle School Bible Buddies FPD middle school students have enjoyed participating in Bible Buddies, a new mentorship opportunity as part of FPD’s Bible curriculum. On select days, FPD sixth, seventh, and eighth graders visit FPD’s lower school students and discuss Bible stories, godly leadership, and Christ-like character traits. This sweet time of fellowship is also a highlight for FPD lower school students who love to spend time with their upper school friends.

“These ministries often see our students through FPD’s service outreach programs,” notes FPD Director of Community Service Holly Scott. “This Team FPD Service Day gave our faculty and staff the opportunity to assist them as well. They all represent wonderful ministries in Macon, and we are honored to support them.”

FPD Students Introduce a Pickleball Team Several members of FPD’s senior class took the initiative to start FPD’s own pickleball team! During FPD’s annual Club Fair, over 150 students signed up to participate. Coached by Joe McDaniel, Ed Middlebrooks, and Johnny Morton, team members learned about rules and techniques through clinics hosted at FPD’s Pearson-Wall Courts. Lauren Casey, club president, noted, “Georgia Mercer and I wanted to start this club because we played pickleball over the summer. We found it really enjoyable and a great way to get outside, be active, and spend time with friends.” This spring, FPD’s Pickleball Team hopes to host additional matches and opportunities for other students to discover the sport.

Thanks to gifts from generous donors, FPD is excited to announce two new Innovation (STEM) Labs – one for elementary school and one for middle and high school students! The Innovation Labs will open in the 2022-2023 school year and will house an array of tools and equipment that will vastly enhance science, engineering, robotics, programming, mathematics, and design opportunities for FPD students.

“While we initially planned on building one Innovation Lab this year, we have had enough donor interest to build two innovation labs – one for our upper school and one for our elementary school,” notes Dr. John Patterson, FPD Head of School. “We are so blessed by the gifts of these donors; these Innovation Labs will change the landscape of our STEM education program.”

FPD Magazine I page 12 I fpdmacon.org

The Middle and High School Innovation Lab will be home to multiple elective classes in which students discuss concepts like construction engineering, agricultural engineering, green building, and computer programming. Students will bring their projects to life using 3D printers, soldering tools, robotics equipment, and engineering software on each student’s tablet. For our prekindergarten through fifth grade, the Lower School Innovation Lab will feature collaborative workspaces with hands-on, engaging activities that enhance what students are learning in the classroom. These projects will build fine motor skills, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking skills in a makerspace format. “While STEM concepts are currently incorporated into our curriculum at all levels, these new designated spaces will take these experiences to the next level,” notes Kristen Kreutner, FPD’s Director of Innovation, Instruction, and Curriculum. “Our curriculum in the Innovation Labs will incorporate real world problem solving with opportunities to create, design, and build solutions.” “Thanks to the gifts we received, we will be able to bring these labs to reality and equip them with the latest technology for the 202223 school year,” comments Dr. Patterson. “These Innovation Labs will be an outstanding addition to the FPD student experience as we continue to enhance our curriculum and opportunities. Students who are interested in 3D design, construction, coding, and robotics will now have new opportunities to grow their gifts and talents under the guidance of FPD’s talented, godly mentors.”

FPD’s Row the Boat Annual Fund is off to a wonderful start. In addition to funding for the Innovation Labs, generous gifts were made to purchase two new kilns for FPD’s art program, new sound improvements for the Clark Fine Arts Center auditorium, and a renovation of FPD’s weight room. Likewise, lead gifts were made to repaint and refinish the Middlebrooks Athletic Center gymnasium. Other projects for consideration are a viewing patio for FPD’s baseball and soccer fields, renovations to our 300 building to expand classroom availability, new band uniforms, and renovated locker rooms.

Campus Clubs FPD fall school-wide service project raises over $16K for Campus Clubs

Each fall FPD introduces a new school-wide service project to unite the Viking Nation community in support of a selected charitable organization. This year, FPD’s school-wide service project benefitted Macon’s Campus Clubs. Students and families joined together to raise $16,159 for Campus Clubs to help build a library. In addition to dress down days, FPD students hosted several events to reach this goal.

Night of Worship

Day School Dash

FPD’s Night of Worship was a wonderful evening of praise and fellowship in the Clark Fine Arts Center. The event was led by FPD senior Camden Smith and members of FPD’s student worship team. The inspiring evening lifted the spirits of attendees and raised over $3000 for Campus Clubs. “At the beginning of the school year, Dr. Patterson was talking about Campus Clubs and our goal to raise money for them,” remembers Camden. “He challenged everyone to think of one way that they could contribute. I thought - I have a worship team. People I can count on. Let’s put this together!” Camden was joined by Lauren Casey, Laura Chan, and Sophie Chan on vocals, FPD elementary music teacher Brayden Hutcheson on piano, and FPD alum Micah Moore on percussion. Throughout the evening, other FPD students read scripture and gave testimonies about their experience volunteering at Campus Clubs. The event was well-received, and the FPD Worship Team plans to continue it in future years.

Bracelet Boutique

FPD fifth grade girls took their love for jewelry making and turned it into a bracelet business to benefit Campus Clubs. The group, led by Emily Collins Cawley, Sterling

Cawley, and Hughes McElreath, set up shop at football games and sold their custom creations to Viking fans, raising nearly $600 for Campus Clubs.

FPD’s cross country teams joined together to support Campus Clubs by hosting a 5K and 1 mile fun run on the Peake Cross Country Trail on November 13. The event featured over 100 runners and raised over $1300 for Campus Clubs. “I first had the idea after they said that we were raising money for Campus Clubs,” remembers FPD sixth grader Abee Leslein, one of the race organizers. “Since I love cross country, I thought I could do a run. My goal was to raise money to help Campus Clubs surpass their goal and get the library they want and deserve.” FPD’s cross country teams hope to continue the Day School Dash to benefit a new organization each year.

Art for a Cause FPD’s Art Club painted a beautiful collaborative piece - “A Walk in the Woods.” The work of art was auctioned off for Campus Clubs in a sealed-bid auction and won by FPD alumna Laura Bechtel ‘81. The FPD Art Club is led by Emmie Dezoort and Tenley Pelissier. You can read more about the FPD Art Clubs on page 20.

“I am very proud of how our students responded to this opportunity to give back. All of these ideas were studentinitiated and student-led. Our students have an undeniable heart for service and were eager to use their God-given talents to help the Campus Clubs ministry. This effort of service is the very best definition of who the students of FPD are – the hands and feet of Christ.” - Dr. John Patterson, FPD Head of School FPD Magazine I page 15 I fpdmacon.org

Softball Honors

Coach Larry Lee This past year Viking Nation lost a dear friend when beloved softball community coach Larry Lee passed away from COVID-19. His effervescent personality and jovial smile were staples on FPD’s campus. When they took to the field in August, FPD’s Lady Vikings softball team knew they wanted this season to be played in his honor.

“LL” stickers placed on the softball helmets

As part of the commemoration, the team placed “LL” stickers on their helmets and proudly hung Larry Lee’s picture at the door frame of their locker room. Likewise, each player wore a shirt with one of Coach Lee’s famous quotes – “I know you got this, but you need to know too.” “He was such a positive guy,” remembers Head Coach Lisa Spear. “I think that’s what we’re going to miss the most. He was so positive and encouraging to the girls. He was the guy who would do anything for you. He was somebody we could count on.” Senior Cammie Frame commented, “One of my favorite memories of Coach Larry Lee is that whenever we went up to bat, he would give us a thumbs up or a smile. And he would always have some words of encouragement when we got on base.”

Coach Lee’s son, Chandler Lee, throws out the first pitch

“If I was having a rough day or an off day,” remembers Senior Avery Stroud, “he was there to help me be more confident in myself, and he would always tell me how he believed in me.”

At the start of the season, Coach Lee’s son, Chandler Lee, threw out the first pitch in honor of his dad and started a memorable season. Coach Lee was definitely smiling down from Heaven on his Lady Vikings. “In the middle of the season, we had a big win over Calvary Day School,” notes Coach Spear. “After being down five runs, Katie Clary got a base hit to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. That win gave us a much-needed confidence boost. After that, we really came together and started playing as a team with a lot of confidence.” Coach Spear notes that Coach Lee’s joy will

ELITE EIGHT!

The Vikings finished 10-3 overall (5-0 in Region 1-A) while cruising to a second consecutive Region Championship and a first-ever Elite 8 Quarterfinals appearance in the GHSA State Playoffs. “I just have a hard time putting into words how proud I am of this team,” said FPD Head Coach, Greg Moore. “The leadership and example from our captains and seniors were really the difference. They established early a “TEAM FIRST” marching order, and the rest of the boys responded with great effort and the results speak for themselves.” Moore continued, “I thought our student body, band, cheerleaders, our fans, our parent support – really all of it – were fantastic. It made me proud to be a Viking, and it was so rewarding to see the boys and our entire school enjoy and celebrate God’s blessings.” The Vikings will return a very skilled nucleus of players from this year’s team, but they also have to fill many holes left by the graduation of this year’s senior class. “We have a lot of work to do moving forward, and we will get there, but for now, I just want to enjoy the successes of these boys and this team – it’s been unforgettable.” Adding to the accolades, FPD’s Coleman Cauley was named the GHSA Region 1-A Private Defensive Player of the Year, and Griffin Green was named the GHSA Region 1-A Private Offensive Player of the Year. Coleman Cauley was also named to the All-State team, while D’Aren Igho-Osagie and Jackson Moore received Honorable Mention. COMPETITION CHEER The Vikings started the season full of excitement for a new season and a fresh start. A choreographer from the Stingrays in Atlanta visited to teach them a new routine. Unfortunately, the team was hit with several injuries at the start of the season, but they reworked their routine and hit the floor at their first competition. In the end, the Vikings placed in the top four in all competitions and earned their highest score yet at sectionals. “The girls wowed and amazed me!” notes Coach Jessica Murnan. “They hit every stunt and made the highest

Art Club for Campus Clubs

Seniors Tenley Pelissier and Emmie Dezoort decided to team up and revive the FPD Art Club as a collaborative, creative club that inspires our student-artists. Tenley and Emmie were joined by dozens of other students who took their passion for art a step further by giving back to Macon’s Campus Clubs. Students created a collaborative work of art called “A Walk in the Woods.” This 40”x30” oil painting was completed with help from multiple club members and auctioned off for Campus Clubs through a sealed bid auction. The winner was FPD alumna Laura Bechtel ‘81. Looking toward the future, Emmie and Tenley want to help Campus Clubs grow their art program. “We are planning on going there for Valentine’s Day and other holidays and do some other really fun projects with them,” notes Tenley. Emmie agrees, “Our goal this year is to help the Campus Clubs Art Class come to life. We hope to give each and every kid in the Campus Clubs community a chance to use their creativity.”

ONE ACT PERFORMANCE

takes home top honors For the 2021 competition, FPD’s one-act team showcased We are the Sea by Laura Lundgren Smith. The performance received outstanding reviews by audiences and the One-Act Competition judges, placing third overall. FPD tenth graders Kyla Gay and Maisie White were recognized for their outstanding performances by being named to the All-Star Cast. The judges also named all twelve FPD actors who portrayed “The Sea” to the AllStar cast to recognize their powerful ensemble work. In addition to their competition performance, students hosted two special shows for Viking Nation, one after school and one for upper school students during the school day. About “We are the Sea” The play tells the story of Norah, Una, and Iseult who set sail from Ireland to escape the ravages of hunger, only to find a new set of dangers on their ocean voyage. The so-called “coffin ships” are full of illness, squalor, and grief, and the passengers can rely only on one another and their memories for comfort. When a cruel, angry sailor refuses to show them mercy, it seems like even their stories might be lost. But they don’t know that the sea that swirls around the ship is listening. The sea remembers everything. And the sea demands justice.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

In Service to our Country Spotlight on FPD alumni serving in the military

FPD has dozens of alumni veterans and active service members in our nation’s armed forces. We salute their bravery and dedication. They epitomize FPD’s mission, and we are honored to call them Vikings. On the next few pages we recognize several of our alumni who currently serve on active duty or in the reserves. We humbly thank them and all of our other FPD military veterans and service members.

Casey Johnson ‘15 1st Lieutenant in the Army

What inspired you to join the military? I’ve always wanted to serve and by junior year of high school, I made up my mind that I was going to join. Luckily, my brother was already an officer in the Army and talked to me about doing ROTC and earning my commission that route. How did your foundation of faith gained during your time at FPD help you in your military career? FPD helped prepare me for my journey in the Army by teaching me about the Word of God and the types of situations and people that I’d meet in the world. Through my time in the Army, I’ve kept my faith in God and continue to serve Him. Being in the military is not easy, and many times I’ve wondered about what God had planned for me or if the military was still my calling. However, I feel that God has these challenges placed before me to make me a better officer and a better leader for future soldiers. How have you been able to grow in your career? Being in the Army has taught me many things. I’ve learned how soldiers operate and how to motivate them to accomplish the mission. Most of all, it showed me what I am capable of, mentally and physically. There have been times that I’ve thought “man, there is no way I’m going to get through this week.” However, looking back on that, I see how much I’ve grown to be a well-rounded officer.

Tyler Wheeler ‘10 Army Captain

What inspired you to join the military? My family has a long lineage of service in the Army, so the desire to serve and lead was instilled in me early. The amount of responsibility given to a young 22-year-old Army Officer is truly humbling and an incredible opportunity to lead our nation’s finest. I was inspired by the opportunity to lead and serve. Plus, I wanted excitement and adventure. How did your foundation of faith gained during your time at FPD help you in your military career? I deeply appreciate the biblical foundations set by my family, faculty, and fellow students at FPD. I’ve had highs and lows in my faith, but I know to set my hope in Christ and to trust in His love, grace, and mercy. My wife and I have learned whenever we move to immediately begin searching for a Christian community and to get plugged in. FPD is a special place and a great community to grow in your faith. Any advice for students who are considering joining the military? Try it! Whether you want to lead tactical units or go into a more technical field to learn new skills, there are so many opportunities to grow, develop, and lead. You will be given much more responsibility coming right out of college than many of your peers. It’s an exciting and rewarding experience with an opportunity to lead and serve.

Gray Lindley ‘12

Captain in the United States Marine Corps

Phillips Jones ‘00

LtCol, Marine Corps Reserves What inspired you to join the military? I believe that I was called to serve in the military after college before pursuing my current career in business. I had a window of opportunity to serve as a pilot, and I seized the chance to fulfill a lifelong dream. The military is an incredible experience for the right person. How did your foundation of faith gained during your time at FPD help you in your military career? The foundation I received in biblical worldview and faith in Jesus Christ from my parents, my church, and certainly FPD can not be understated. The world can be a cold, chaotic, and violent place. Having Jesus at the center of your life gives you a perspective that you will most surely need, no matter what trials you find yourself facing in both your personal life and career. Any advice for students who are considering joining the military? Talk to people who you know have served to gain perspective on what you are signing up to do. If you want to go to medical school or law school, it’s a good way to pay for either one while gaining amazing life experiences. If you want to be a pilot or go into business, it’s a good way to build a resume and skills that employers demand.

How did your foundation of faith gained during your time at FPD help you in your military career? I turned 28 in September, and I am still overwhelmed at how fully and completely FPD prepared me for a career in the military. I cannot emphasize enough that FPD prepared me far more than many of my peers and colleagues. I learned servant leadership, communication skills, how to empathize with others, work on a team, and problem solve. But most importantly, FPD provided me with the framework of my faith. It was and has been a continuous well of knowledge for me to pull from, lean on, and return to in the most trying of times. How have you been able to grow in your career? I’ve had the privilege of getting to mentor some of the finest young men and women our nation has to offer, as well as receiving mentorship from superiors and subordinates alike who are some of the most selfless, passionate, and professional individuals I have ever met. My faith has been challenged in ways that I did not expect nor experience in college. But God has always provided me with a community of believers. Any advice for students who are considering joining the military? Be a team player. Don’t ever quit, and remember that it is not about how tough, strong, fast, or smart you are. What’s important is having compassion for the man or woman on your left and right and putting the needs of your subordinates ahead of your own.

FPD Magazine I page 28 I fpdmacon.org

Grace Tinkey ‘13

Senior Airman in the United States Air Force What inspired you to join the military? From a young age, growing up near Robins Air Force Base and seeing the planes fly overhead, I was inspired by those in uniform and what they stood for. Likewise, I was inspired by my grandfather who served in WW2 and other mentors who spent time in the service. How have you been able to grow in your career? The military teaches you how to have tough skin and pushes you in ways that you may not have believed possible. There are so many life lessons that I have learned through the service. It pushes you out of your comfort zone in more ways than one and makes you stronger. The military and your life are 110% how you make it and your perspective in how you view things. I cannot imagine doing anything else from this point forward. How did your foundation of faith gained during your time at FPD help you in your military career? Faith has been something that has always been important to me from a young age. FPD helped set a foundation of faith for me moving into college and post college. Faith has gotten me through so many things. By the grace of God, I have made it through some dangerous times on deployment. The foundation built at FPD helped gave me peace and strength during those difficult times.

Viking Nation, As we reflect on 2020-2021, one thing comes to mind – God’s faithfulness. God has abundantly blessed FPD. We are honored to be the school home for so many wonderful students, families, and faculty members. In the midst of a year when COVID seemed to affect every aspect of daily life, FPD stayed focused on providing an outstanding Christ-centered, academically-strong experience for students. It was a joy to see our students thrive on campus through face-to-face interactions with mentors and friends. I want to thank the families who continue to choose FPD for their children’s education. At the start of the 2021-22 school year, God blessed us with more new students than we have welcomed in any school year for the past five years. The energy and enthusiasm for the FPD experience is growing, and we are well on our way to welcoming even more new students in the 2022-23 school year. With that in mind, our current Row the Boat Annual Fund projects include enhancements to resources in the classrooms, athletic teams, and fine art programs as we continue to support a growing student body. Examples include a new innovation lab, updates to our weight room and locker room, renovation of our 300 building to expand lower school classroom space, and more. Additional information can be found on our website at www.fpdmacon.org/rowtheboat. I want to thank all of the many Viking Nation families, friends, and alumni listed on the following pages who gave to last year’s Row the Boat Annual Fund campaign. Through these gifts, we had a record-breaking year for Annual Fund giving and built a new elementary and preschool playground and refreshed our entrance and exit corridors. It is a joy to watch our youngest learners climb on the new Viking Ship climbing tower or maneuver through the new obstacle course. Likewise, the banners, lampposts, and updated landscaping along the new entrance and exit provide an impressive first impression for campus visitors. These large-scale improvements were accompanied by many other athletic, academic, and fine arts enhancements that ensure FPD continues to provide a top educational experience for our many students. In the midst of changes and updates, our focus remains on our mission to educate and equip students to change the world for God’s glory. Thank you to all of the faculty, families, friends, and alumni who continue to invest in this mission. We commit to use your gifts and investments wisely as we educate and equip the next generation of Christian leaders. Go Vikings!

2020-2021 ROW THE BOAT ANNUAL FUND

Thank you to everyone who gave to the 2020-2021 Row the Boat Campaign. Due to the generous gifts of many families, friends, faculty, and alumni, FPD was able to enhance our campus in multiple ways including three large improvement projects - a beautiful new entrance and exit, a new preschool playground, and a new elementary playground. We appreciate everyone who gave to make these projects a reality for FPD students.

2020 - 2021 FPD Row the Boat Annual Fund

STATEMENT OF GIVING The FPD Fund consists of two kinds of gifts - restricted and unrestricted. Restricted gifts may be designated for various academic, athletic, fine arts, facilities, or miscellaneous categories. Unrestricted gifts go toward the greatest need. The funds work like a checking account in that any gifts not spent in a given year roll over to the next year. Many times, restricted funds are encumbered for ongoing projects. The total number of donors to the 2020-2021 FPD Annual Fund was 460.
