In the Heart of Naples with the Love of God: we worship, we love, we grow, we serve 2022 Annual Report
April 30, 2023
Agenda for the Annual Meeting of the Congregation and Corporation
Another year has passed. 2022 is “in the books” and what a year it was! It began with the onslaught of yet another wave of the Coronavirus, this time the Omicron variant. For the first two months we kept safeguards in place and it was not until March that we were fully back. In that month we celebrated our congregation’s 70th anniversary of being here “In the heart of Naples with the love of God.”
Other significant highlights were the hiring of several new employees: David Fister as our AV technician, Susan Pratt as our Assistant for Caring Ministries, Sandy Knight as Office Assistant/Receptionist and Debbie Savage as Director of Finance. And Brice Gerlach was finally able to take his long awaited and well-deserved three-month Sabbatical. We received the wonderful and inspiring gift of TheSaintJohn’s BibleHeritage Edition. And as always, we engaged in many worship, fellowship and mission activities. New members joined and we lost some dear saints. We cared for one another and those in need with the love of Christ. And your generosity once again provided for our operational needs and extended beyond our walls to help those in distress, including those who suffered loss during Hurricane Ian. Thank You!
Our elders, deacons, teachers, Stephen ministers and staff have all continued to serve with “energy, intelligence, imagination and love.” And it is my great joy and privilege to serve alongside them and with you.
There is so much else for which to be grateful and you will find much of it described in the pages of this Annual Report. I hope you will take the time to read every word and to realize that you belong to a wonderful congregation!
Faithfully and Gratefully,
The early morning after Hurricane IanO blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle; they in glory shine. Yet all are one in thee, for all are thine. Alleluia! Alleluia!

What an exciting year 2022 was at FPCN! Thanks to such a loving, faithful, and generous congregation we had another great year both spiritually and financially. We ended the year in the black with $63,805 in revenue over expenses. The Finance Committee and Session agreed that the best way to steward this surplus was to transfer it to a TR Session Reserve account until we could determine the best use for it.
Our 2022 revenue was up by 1% over 2021, which may seem like a small number, but we are thrilled about this because we know that it was a tough economic year for so many of our folks. We ended 2022 with 267 formal pledges for $1,446,076, but actual pledged gifts came in at $1,487.685 an excess of $41,000. Our expenses were also up over 2021, which was expected, but came in almost $186K under budget, thanks to staff working very hard to control expenses.
The generous spirit of our church allowed FPCN to distribute over $309K in Missions support to countless individuals and agencies during 2022, bringing our total Missions support to $971K over the last three years! By the end of the year, we had received over $58K for the Hurricane Ian Relief Fund, and over $30K for the Pastor’s Emergency Assistance Fund, which allowed us to help provide financial relief for hundreds of people who suffered losses due to Hurricane Ian through disbursements to both individuals and to seven different local partner agencies. We know that the gifts that you all generously contribute towards our various mission programs are in addition to your pledges, and for that, we are truly grateful and blessed.
We are all very aware of the economic challenges that 2022 experienced, so it is no surprise that the value of our Endowment Fund on December 31 was $7.03M, down from last year by $1.5M. Since our capital expenditures for the year were only $19K+, we did not need to do a large transfer to cover them at year end. We received the budgeted $300K from the Endowment for Operational Support, however, we also deposited in excess of $121K from Estate, Memorial, and Birthday gifts into the Endowment during the year.
Other highlights from 2022 include a successful 2022 Generosity campaign, receiving a single large donation which allowed us to acquire The Saint John’s Bible, receiving a favorable audit review for our 2021 financials, securing additional Preschool grants in excess of $119K, and Session approving the 2023 budget of $2.8M. We look forward to growing our programs, missions, and membership during this next year, which we wouldn’t be able to do without your faithful support in the past as well as going forward!
With gratitude,
Debbie Savage, Director of Finance Doug Jensen, Finance Committee Chair2022 was a truly Joyful year for the thirty-one (31) deacons who have faithfully performed a litany of tasks, mostly in the background, supporting the day-to-day functions of the Church. Deacons serve threeyear terms in service to the Church.
Our primary functions are:
• Communicate with and represent the members in our parishes in all matters of the Church.
• Serve on Deacon Committees to perform various functions within the Church such as greeting, serving communion, and working on Deacon Committees described later in this report.
• Focus on JOY in everything we do and on establishing relationships and finding ways to have more members participate actively in the life of the Church.
• Raise money to support three local charities (the Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul, Helps Outreach) which provide immediate essential services to walk-in people who have exhausted all other avenues for help.
• Serve by way of several Deacon Committees as follows:
• Blood Bank Committee hosts three blood drives each year.
• Church Tours Committee provides once-a-month tours of our facility to all who wish to become more familiar with our incredible building and grounds.
• Home Communion Committee visits members in their homes to serve communion and bring the church to those of our members who cannot visit the church in person.
• Communion Preparation Committee meets every month to order and prepare all the elements and other things required for our communion services.
• Deacons’ Brunch Committee organizes, prepares and hosts a brunch after service in the month of June or September for those members who are still in Naples at that time.
• Deacons’ Fund Committee raises and distributes funds to local charities for basic needs.
• Deacons’ Sunday takes place on a Sunday after service in February when the Deacons organize, prepare and host an event in Spencer Hall where members can meet, or get to know better, their deacons.
• Flower Committee prepares altar flower bouquets in vases each Sunday to be delivered to members having their 85+ birthday or are dealing with sickness or injury.
• Friendship Pads Committee collects and organizes the friendship pads after the last service each Sunday.
• Greeters are found and organized to greet at each service during the year.
• Receptions Committee organizes and hosts receptions for memorial services held in the sanctuary, if requested.
• Inner Missions Committee puts forth an on-going effort to identify Church members in need of assistance of transportation, or other basic life activities, and to put those members in need with other members who can assist them.
• Holiday Remembrances Committee purchases, organizes and prepares gift baskets on Easter and Christmas for members who are ill or cannot make it to church for a variety of reasons.
The major accomplishments of the Deacons in 2022 are:
• Realign all the parishes to include fewer members in each parish with more closely grouped households within a smaller geographical area in the Naples area.
• Reorganize to serve better those members who no longer have a presence in Naples but who desire to remain connected to the Church.
• Revitalize the Inner-Missions Committee.
• Revise our Deacons’ Fund Policy, vet charities to receive distributions and seek increased donations to be able to distribute larger amounts to those in need.
• Reorganize and restart the Church Tours.
• Encourage volunteerism to get more members involved in the life of the Church.
• Revise and make current the brochures OpportunitiesforInvolvementand PersonalNeedsService Agenciesin the Naples Area.
• Cooperate more closely with other groups within the Church to coordinate efforts, such as Stephen Ministers, Membership, Head Ushers and others.
We look forward to 2023 when we switch our focus from JOY to HOPE as we continue to perform and improve on all of the above in the service of God.
Respectfully,
David Witman, Deacon ModeratorThis committee is composed of the elder for Congregational Care, the Stephen Minister leader, chair of the Visitation Team and the Deacon Moderator.
There are 12 active Stephen Ministers who assist members in need.
The Care Visitation Team has five members who visit members of the church who are in care facilities and/or are homebound.
We make phone calls and send cards of encouragement. “We are here to help!”

Rev.Craig Goodrich, Senior
Pastor Kathleen Law, Director of Publications and Social MediaIn 2022 we continued to grow our online presence. We offered our Sunday service via livestream and a recorded service was being emailed to our list of recipients, as well as posting it on our website later on Sunday mornings. In addition to viewing the services on our website and Facebook pages, we added a YouTube channel which allows participants another platform in which to view our services.
An online Friendship Pad form was added to the website for tracking attendance for those who worship online.
By the end of 2022 we had 936 recipients that received our weekly emails, and that list continues to grow. We sent three emails regarding Session updates for COVID protocols for gathering and worship. Video messages from our members continued to be taped with invitations to be a part of our church. A video from Pastor Craig Goodrich was sent following Hurricane Ian in September, ensuring people that the church was unharmed and announcing two funds that were established to help those who suffered losses from the hurricane.
Advertising was focused mostly online and in local magazines. A direct mail postcard was mailed to over 35,000 people in a targeted area. We increased our Facebook ads for concerts and events and have had much success in reaching friends and neighbors.
Facebook began the year with 676 followers and by December 2022 we had 805 followers. Wednesday’s at First programs were taped and added to the website for viewing.
ASeasonofMusicConcerts were livestreamed and added to the website for viewing.
A tri-fold Welcome Brochure was designed and made available in the pews and throughout the church.
2022 saw a concerted effort to integrate our expanding Christian Education offerings to include youth, young adults, as well as adults of all ages. Previously separate committees - adult education, children, youth, and young adults - existed. We will continue to remain mindful of where logical intersections in these ministries can be encouraged. The challenge of identifying speakers/programs of interest across the ages will continue into 2023. The Preschool remains a stand-alone committee. However, we will look for more opportunities to bring the Preschool parents and students into closer interaction with our church children.
Wednesday Nights at First: Full dinners catered by Wynn’s were served for $10 and were well received and well attended.
Three sessions on saving God’s earth from the ravages of climate change included the following speakers:
• The Honorable Francis Rooney, former U.S. Congressman for Florida’s 19th District and Ambassador to the Holy See. He has been outspoken on the impact of climate change on SW Florida.
• Dr. Michael Savarese, Professor of Coastal Resilience and Climate Adaptation and a key leader of the FGCU Water School.
• Rob Moher, President and CEO of the Conservancy of SWFL.

WOW (Women of the Way): Led by the WOW Leadership Team. Studies this year included:
• "The Spirit-Led Heart: Living a Life of Love and Faith without Borders" by Suzanne Eller.
• "Surprised by the Parables” by Michelle Lee-Barnewall.
• "The True Vine” by Andrew Murray. Attendees were encouraged to engage in different spiritual practices each week as a compliment to their weekly lessons.
Women’s Ministry Bible Study: Led by Janeen McClure: Finished studying the book of John and started book of Acts.
HUDDLE: Led by Rev. Rex Childs: A weekly men’s Bible discussion group.
Men’s Faith and Fellowship: Led by Bill Kearney: Study of great former religious leaders such as St. Augustine, Martin Luther King, Jr., John Calvin, John Wesley, C.S. Lewis, and others. Three of these presentations were repeated on Sunday mornings prior to church.
Sacred Habits led by Nancy Van Fleet: Spiritual practices through a contemplative stance included a journey through Lent with the words of scripture and the poetry of Emily Dickinson as guides; exploration of the theme of “Homecoming” in the fall as we engaged in centering prayer; and an Advent journey, “Tending the Light” inspired by the writings of Henri Nouwen. These opportunities engaged us in a deeper rhythm as we walked through the liturgical year.
Children/Youth led by Nancy Van Fleet: We brought in frameworks to build an intergenerational church experience through Fuller Youth Institute’s “Growing Young in a Changing World” program. The growing young team includes Rev. Craig Goodrich, Rev. Rex Childs, Nancy Van Fleet, Ashley Hancock, and young adults, Audrey Gordon and Jack Fogelman.

With deep gratitude, Barb Weiss,
ChairWe had thought that in December of 2021 COVID was under control; however, both our January and February Gatherings had to be cancelled due to a rise in COVID. By March we felt comfortable to have a Gathering with the serving of box lunches.
Our March program was presented by Pat Nordbrock: OrganizetoSimplify. Our April Gathering showcased LuLu’sKitchen: St. Matthew’s program to train and employ individuals for the food industry. Our box lunch was catered by DeliciousbyDesign(the catering arm of LuLu’s Kitchen)
In May, Rev. Rex Childs pulled together our Circle Study (WhatMyGrandmothersTaughtMe). Having Rev. Childs do our May program gave us the opportunity to present Rex and Cayla with a beautiful hand knit baby blanket and a colorful hand-made quilt from our “Sew and Sews” group for the anticipated arrival of their first child.
With our strong foundation in mission outreach and education we donated over $14,020 to our list of selected organizations which included $8,000 to the Immokalee Fair Housing Alliance (IFHA); held a blanket drive in January sharing warmth and love with Misión Peniel’s congregants; and donated back packs to Grace Place.
Our “Sew and Sews” projects continue to provide prayer shawls to those in our congregation going through difficult times; Izzy dolls for children needing some comfort and hope; and hand made quilts to be given as a “House Warming” gift for the families receiving a new home through the IFHA. Our monthly Gatherings and weekly serving of cookies and punch after church services provides opportunities for the sharing of love through hospitality.
We were blessed to have five of our women attend the PW South Atlantic Synod held in Georgia in late October.
Presbyterian Women offer opportunities to all the women with our church and community to engage in Bible study, fellowship, and mission outreach through participation in a Circle Group, Sew and Sews, and/or to attend one of our Monthly Gatherings.
