Founded in 1971 as a metal stamping company fulfilling government contracts, Midwest Specialties, now FlexArm, Inc., developed the first FlexArm tapping arm.

Through product popularity the company expanded globally, becoming North America’s leading manufacturer of tapping and assembly arms.

With five hydraulic arm models and four pneumatic models, the FlexArm machining centers offer drilling, milling, boring through efficient and cost-effective operation. The line of machines offer a reach from 11” through 85” and maximum torque from 28 ft/lb. to 162 ft/lb. The most recent model is the GH-18 Electric Tapping Arm which is the first of its class, offering 59 ft/lb. of torque with 110V of electricity. Designed for efficiency, this machine is easily portable and as a full range of compatible accessory options.

Due to a foreseeable market need, FlexArm expanded in 2016 to offer a large bed drilling and milling machines called FlexDrill CNC. These machine tools are built to order and are geared towards fabricators; making it more affordable than ever to perform an array of in-house machining. What makes the FlexDrill stand out from other machine centers is the ability to work in ‘Pendulum Mode’ which allows for 100% spindle uptime; unlike anything ever before seen in the machining industry. This process lets the operator safely load/unload one side of the machine while the spindle is working on the other side, and vice versa.

This past September the company broke ground on a new 55,000 sq. ft. facility in Wapakoneta, Ohio and is working on hiring 35 new team members to meet their production demand. FlexArm ...FlexArm continued on page 3...

A good bearing lubricant can help extend the life of your bearings.

However, improper use or handling of bearing lubricants can lead to problems for your applications.

In order to make sure your bearing lubrication standards are up to snuff, you need to have the right information. Here are four myths about bearing lubrication that you shouldn’t believe.

Myth #1: ALL LUBRICATIONS ARE THE SAME Not all lubrications are created equal. There are many different types of bearing lubrications and each one can have different benefits. General grease is the most common option, but there are others, including: Oil lubricants, Solid lubricants, Graphite and Specialized plating.

There’s also an issue where certain lubricants may not be compatible with each other, leading to thickening or thinning that can cause more wear and tear for your bearing. Other types of lubricants can pair well together, like oils and solid lubricants. Keep these factors in mind when deciding bearing lubricants, because replacing one with another without checking can lead to problems in the future.

Myth #2: RE-LUBRICATION IS AN ANNUAL EVENT Odds are, you’re going to have to re-lubricate your bearings more than once in a year. Your re-lubrication schedule will be impacted by a few factors, including how much your bearings are used and the environment of the application.

Heavier use and harsher elements are likely going to mean more frequent re-lubrications, perhaps even as often as one per week. If the bearings are lightly used and operate in ideal conditions, it’s possible re-lubrication can be done on an annual basis. Either way, it’s important to set up a regular lubrication schedule to make sure that your bearings are always good to go.

Myth #3: LUBRICATION CAN BE STORED ANYWHERE This depends on the state of your storage area. Lubricants can be easily contaminated, so they need to be stored in places that won’t collect dirt, dust, or any other substances that can ruin your product.

You can’t use contaminated lubrication, so it can pay to find the perfect place to store it and keep it safe from contaminants.

Myth #4: PROPER LUBRICATION WILL COMPENSATE FOR POOR QUALITY BEARINGS Good lubrication can extend the life of your bearings, allowing your applications to run smoothly for as long as possible. Of course, good bearing lubrication won’t be able to do much without the right bearings.

When considering custom tooling, either for your press brake or another machine, standard tooling is practical and cost effective. You may, however, have considered custom tooling to decrease production time, improve part accuracy and/or manufacturer outside your standard capabilities.

Review the following timeline and tips before requesting your next custom tooling quote.

Determining the Need for Custom Tooling In truth – custom tooling will often cost more and require a bit more lead-time than standard tooling.

However, with a bit of planning, it can be the solution for challenging applications. Understanding the capabilities of custom designed tooling in the design phase of a project enables planning an efficient production schedule and proactive quoting on materials.

Custom tooling, in this case custom punches and dies, make it possible to utilize a tool that fits the fabricator’s exact needs for a particular application. When multiple tooling changes can be combined into one, it minimizes time and improves end-product quality by making the

The Process The custom tooling manufacturer designs your product based on your drawings and end goal. With each custom tooling order you will be asked to approve the design and are often asked to send test material to ensure your custom tooling performs as intended. To maximize your custom tooling quote/ order timeline, follow these steps: 1.Submit with your initial request: 1. Machine the tooling is for – Make, Model, Serial Number 2. Style of tooling (American, New Standard, etc.)

3. General type of material and thickness 4. For a punch: type needed? size of segment?

5. For a Die: type/opening? Size of segment?

6. As many drawings as you can submit to clarify exactly what you are looking for will only ensure it is quoted correctly the first time.

2. You will receive a drawing of your quote request, including detailed specs, pricing and leadtime. Promptly review the specs. At this time the manufacturer is happy to tweak the design to insure the end result meets your expectations.

3. Order and send test material. The most common setback to receiving your custom tooling is a delay in test material arrival. Your quote will mention if “8 to 10 pieces of test material” are requested. If they are, sending this material promptly will decrease your leadtime. While this added step may seem a nuisance, it is the manufacturer’s method of double-checking your order performs exactly as you expect.

4. Fox Machinery will let you know when your tooling is ready to ship!

Replicate tooling you already have You may have useful tooling in your shop that is ready to be replaced.

You don’t know where it came from, maybe it’s been there forever, but you know it works perfectly for your application. We can replicate the new tooling off PDF scans of your current tooling.

To ensure end-product accuracy it’s imperative that PDF scans, and not pictures (JPEG, PNG, etc.), are taken of the tooling.

Picture files will distort the measurements of your tooling and produce obscured Samples of PDF tooling measurments. Given the size of some tooling, scans used to it can be tricky to get a PDF. Three ways to do manufacturer this: replications 1. Place the end of the tooling on a piece of paper and, with precision, outline the tooling.

Scan that piece of paper and submit to Fox Machinery.

2. For those with a smart phone, there are many apps available that scan images. “Easy Scan” is one we have used sucessfully in the past.

3. If possible, put the end of your tooling on a copy machine - this is a sure fire way to produce a PDF that is dimensionally correct.
