What ‘s to Do in PAMPA

What ‘s to Do in PAMPA

Did you know that Pampa was featured in an episode of the award-winning television series, Yellowstone? It’s absolutely true! In Season 5, Episode 9, Part 2, recurring character Rip Wheeler (played by Cole Hauser) stops by the shop of Pampa’s very own legend, Billy Klapper. Rip notes that Klapper was one of the few loriners who still made one-piece spurs, and a pair of Klapper’s world-renowned one-piece spurs were actually highlighted in the episode. Sadly, Klapper passed away in his home in Pampa on September 10 at the age of 87, just a couple of months before the episode aired, with the episode being dedicated to him. Part of his obituary briefly summarizes the lasting legacy that Billy left behind.

Welcome to PAMPA -28-

After high school, Billy started working as a ranch hand at the Buckle L Ranch in Childress and later at the Y Ranch in Paducah. Billy spent a great deal of time with the famous bit and spur maker, Adolph Bayers, and in 1966 he made his first pair of spurs. The demand for Billy’s spurs grew, and he started making gear full-time in 1968. He was well known in the ranching and cowboying industry and was one of the few bit and spur makers that still made one-piece spurs. Billy’s bits and spurs are now collected worldwide. He made 682 different spur patterns and 816 different bit patterns. His patterns have been used by bit and spur makers but have never been duplicated. Billy created his legacy and changed the cutting horse industry by listening to what the cowboys wanted and making functional bits for their horses.

A Place to Call Home

Whether you’re in the market for a home close to all the amnenities that Pampa has to offer, or you’re looking for some quiet country livin’, there’s definitely a place waiting for you! And now, thanks to Northridge at Mesilla Park and their hardworking crew of visionaries, the option for a brand new home is now available with even more to come. Pampa native, Andrew Ammons, always knew that Pampa had a ton of potential, but in order for it to grow, he knew there was something missing and decided to take a leap of faith.

Andrew’s love for the place he has always called home drove his passion to do something for not only the community, but for the expansion of

Big or Small, One Store Has It All.

Farm & Ranch

am-6:00pm

Pampa as a whole and for newcomers to have a place where they too can call home.

“I’m born and raised from Pampa and everything that everyone always came back to when it came to growth was that we don’t have new homes. And yes we have homes here in Pampa and they’re great homes, but any large expansion that any large company has tried to do, they’re typically met with, ‘where are all those employees, management-where are all those people going to live?’”

“I’ve had personal experience with working to recruit people and bring people to town and they love the people of Pampa, they love the community, which is what me and my wife love so much about Pampa, but people who are looking to move here come to town and they’re excited for that and then an HR person will drive them around and they’ll be looking. We have to understand that outside of our bubble that we live in, there’s new housing, there’s new things. So the people who are trying to bring something in, want those new things.”

“We’ve always believed that it’s something that is needed. There’s a lot of industry and a lot of big projects that are coming to town and we believe that there’s going to need to be housing for them. We don’t know exactly who’s going to deliver them, but we believe that God’s going to provide the people to live in these homes.”

The official groundbreaking began on October 1, 2024, and in less than a year, Northridge has completed two houses that are move-in ready, with more currently under construction.

The development is broken down into three phases with the first phase well underway. Phase one will consist of building 34 homes, two of them already completed and three others that are projected to be completed within the next few months.

The houses will consist of three different floor plans to choose from: a 1,200 square foot with 3 bedrooms and 2 bath which is currently available, a 1,550 square foot with 4 bedrooms and 2 bath which is currently available, and a 1,729 square foot with 4 bedrooms and 2 bath which is currently under construction.

Each house features a spacious, open concept, an abundance of natural light, and modern kitchens with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances.

The location of these homes sits on the far northeastern corner of Pampa, overlooking the vastness of the high plains toward the east, providing the perfect opportunity to witness a gorgeous sunrise that can only be found in this part of Texas.

This is just the beginning of the Northridge journey and the future of housing in Pampa, but residents and nonresidents alike are already expressing their interest and excitement.

“It’s appealing for not only the newcomers, but for the people here too who have probably been in their house for a while and want to do something different,” Northridge Sales Representative Matthew Raines said. “We’ve had an interesting mix of people who are interested, from first-time homebuyers to elderly folks who are just ready to buy something that is smaller and easier to take care of, and because these houses are new, it’s not going to require a lot of maintenance.”

For the folks that are just curious and have no intention on buying a home out there on Sioux Place and simply want to see what’s going on, Northridge welcomes them to take a look, ask questions, and share with their family and friends.

“Out here in the evening, people are coming out here to look and have no intention to buy. They’re just curious. But that’s what we need. We want them to see what we’re doing and going out and telling their friends, or if they hear someone saying they need a home, they can say, ‘oh, go check these out!’ We need people to spread the word.” For more information on these beautiful homes, call 806810-4088, or visit northridgepampa.com

Here to Support Your New Business Endeavor

Here in Pampa, it’s not uncommon to see a large gathering of folks in front of a brand new business celebrating their grand opening. Some of these folks look like drops of golden sun. Meet the Gold Coats.

The century-old tradition of ribbon cutting serves as a symbolic gesture of a new beginning, and the Gold Coats of the Pampa Chamber of Commerce are the first ones to help celebrate.

Armed with a pair of golden scissors and green ribbon to pay tribute to Pampa’s hometown colors, the owner of the new business cuts the ribbon in front of their establishment, invoking praise and congratulations from those in attendance.

While the ceremony is short and sweet, it represents not only a new beginning, but it ensures the new entrepreneur that they have the support of the town at their back.

If you are interested in becoming a Gold Coat or have a business that you’d like to celebrate with the classic Grand Opening ceremony, contact the Chamber of Commerce at 806-669-3241 or visit their location at 200 N. Ballard Monday through Thursday, 8:30 AM to 5 PM and Friday from 8:30 AM to noon.

Pampa Economic Development Corporation: Bringing Pampa into the Future

It’s not uncommon to see a Chamber of Commerce and an Economic Development Corporation in any small town, but what exactly do they do and what’s the difference between the two?

The Chamber of Commerce typically serves as a support system for local businesses and entrepreneurs, holding ribbon cutting ceremonies for grand openings, spotlighting new and existing businesses, and coordinating and hosting community events.

The Economic Development Corporation tends to work behind the scenes, scouting for new industries they believe will benefit the city, financially supporting any new startup businesses through the means of city commission meetings and board meetings, and of course, supporting existing local businesses.

The EDC is crucial for the economic vitality of any small town, and here in Pampa, PEDC Executive Director, Ryan Bradley, is hard at work to find industries and businesses who will not only help Pampa’s growth and

expansion, but who will also maintain the values this rich town has always carried.

“I go to conventions, business trips, and I find leads; and if someone wants to come here, I drive them around and help them find all of these things and package a deal together, and we in turn present it to the board,” Ryan said.

“My primary function is to support local businesses that either want to grow, expand, start, or survive. I make sure that those local businesses and local entrepreneurs have everything they need to be successful. In the background, I’m looking for something big.”

Ask anyone who lived in Pampa during the 70s and 80s and they’ll tell you that it was during this time when Pampa was in its glory days: the oilfield was booming and the population sat around 30,000. However, an explosion at the Celanese plant in 1987 rocked the town, and this combined with downturns in the oil & gas industries, overall economic downturn, and a net migration of population from rural communities to urban centers,

INDUSTRY

which is seen across most rural communities in the panhandle (as well as the nation), Pampa was changing fast.

“You had a boom in the 70s and 80s because the oilfields out here weren’t fully developed, so you had the Baker Hughes and Halliburton’s and others out here because the fields were still being developed. Now that all the wells have been drilled, that industry is now fully developed and it may not come back to its former glory.”

“You still have all those wells out here and they’re still producing, but it’s now just maintenance. It’s not drilling and exploration like it was then.”

While the Texas Panhandle has relied heavily on the oil and gas industry, agriculture has always and will continue to remain a crucial industry, as well as a way of life in this part of the country.

But with one of those major contributing factors having become unsustainable, the panhandle has looked toward the future in reliable sustainability and potential growth through technology.

Talks have been in the works about bringing in data centers into Gray County, with Ryan consulting with a big name in the business who has a ton of experience building data centers in rural communities, Doug Recker.

“Doug Recker is an ex-marine and was one of the first

people to build data centers in Virginia, and he started his own business of deploying these little micro data centers out on the edge in rural communities. That’s how he found us and that’s what his expertise is.”

“Do I think we can get back to our glory days? Absolutely. Are we going to be able to do it through traditional means? Probably not, we’re going to have to be creative. What the IT data center has come in and afforded us is something completely different. It would be a shame if we didn’t embrace it and make it work for us.”

The timing of the incoming new industry couldn’t have been better: with the construction of brand new housing, the construction of the new Career and Technical Education building at the high school, the ongoing beautification projects in Pampa, and the widening of our highways all happening simultaneously is truly serendipitous, and Ryan is excited for what the future of Pampa holds.

“When I bring people here, I can show them new houses being built, I can show them that the community is investing in their youth to train them into the new industries of the future. They see construction and they see new. Everything is lining up at the same time for our town to start growing again.”

Welcome, Harvester Family!

I hope your summer has been restful, joyful, and filled with memories that will carry you into the new school year with renewed energy. As we prepare for the 2025–2026 school year, I want to extend a heartfelt welcome to all of our returning families and a special greeting to those who are new to Pampa ISD. We’re honored you’ve chosen to be part of our school community.

There’s never been a more exciting time to be a Harvester! Thanks to the support of our community through Bond 2023, we are actively transforming our campuses to meet the evolving needs of today’s learners. From the new Career & Technology and Fine Arts addition at the high school to the expansion at Travis Elementary, these projects are more than buildings—they are bold investments in our students’ future. At Pampa ISD, our mission goes beyond academics. We are committed to helping students become compassionate, competent, confident, and future-ready. Guided by our vision—Pampa ISD students are courageous innovators utilizing their own unique abilities to invest in their world—our staff is dedicated to creating learning environments where every child feels seen, supported, and challenged to grow. This year, our focus remains on deepening literacy, strengthening processes and procedures, and fostering meaningful connections with families. Our commitment to safety remains steadfast. With dedicated school resource officers, trained personnel through our Guardian Program, and a strong School Safety and Security Plan, we work diligently to provide a secure environment where students can thrive. Thank you for entrusting us with your children.

Together, we will celebrate achievements, support one another through challenges, and build a culture of excellence rooted in respect, resilience, and community. I am proud to be part of this remarkable district, and I look forward to the year ahead with great hope and enthusiasm.

With gratitude, Hugh Piatt II, Superintendent, Pampa ISD

Education to Suit Every Need

When it comes to what people first consider before moving to a new city or town, education is always right there at the top of the list. From K-12 to college, a quality education is crucial because, after all, this is the future we’re talking about. What makes Pampa appealing when it comes to education are the options and resources available. From public education to alternative and private, there’s sure to be a school to fit every unique individual.

Pampa Independent School District

There’s no denying that once a student is enrolled through Pampa ISD, they will be a Harvester for life because the pride of the green and gold runs deep. The wonderful teachers in our elementary schools will set the course for each child to be successful in the following years, leaving a lasting impression that students will undoubtedly look fondly back on. The junior high will help students adjust to the changes of transitioning to a bigger school (and bigger curriculum) and guide them gently to their next big milestone, all while they encourage them to find their passions and interests that will set them on a direct path to a successful future. Once a student enters high school, they will be offered a wide variety of classes that will provide extensive instruction through hands-on learning that directly correlates to the career of their choosing. From nursing and agriculture to robotics and welding, Pampa High School ensures that their students will walk out of those doors ready and confident in their next big adventure.

Pampa is Open for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner!

Pampa is one of those smaller towns where local restaurants outnumber the larger restaurant chains, each one offering something different for every palate. For something quick and on the go, stop by one of the many food trucks that are unique in every way. One thing is for certain: no matter which of the many options you choose for some good, hometown eatin’, you will always be greeted with a smile and will leave full and happy.

Fletcher Br0s Celebrates One Year Anniversary of Providing Unique Cuisine Across the Panhandle

In August of 2024, Fletcher Br0s brought something to the folks of Pampa and the surrounding area they didn’t realize was missing: the Navajo Taco. A recipe passed down from their grandfather, Thomas and Bud Fletcher brought the traditional Navajo Taco to the Texas panhandle, and those of us who already knew what it was were excited to finally see it come to these parts, and we now didn’t have to worry about traveling afar to sink our teeth into one.

For those new to the Navajo Taco, after that first bite into the made-from-scratch frybread topped with homemade chili and all the fixins’, they finally understood what the buzz was about. And even a year later, it’s still a popular menu item, with individual pieces of frybread and a dessert frybread coated in cinnamon and sugar being added to the menu due to the overwhelming praise of the traditional staple.

What started as exclusive only to Pampa, Fletcher Br0s has taken their bright red trailer all over the panhandle to numerous events and functions, receiving the same praise as they do here, and it’s through that support of different communities that keeps them going strong. But Fletcher Br0s aren’t just masters of the Navajo Taco, as their burgers are considered some of the best in the panhandle.

“Our burgers have turned out to be one of our top sellers,”said Esmy, Thomas’s wife and one of Fletcher Br0’s main chefs. “We had someone come from Amarillo to PampaFest and said that was the best burger he’s ever had. We don’t use frozen meat, it’s 90/10 and it’s fresh, we weigh every single patty, and it’s cooked on a flat grill, so we don’t know why they’re so popular,” she laughed. “It’s just a simple cheeseburger.”

Fletcher Br0s has a full menu with multiple breakfast items that are served all day, such as the crowd-pleasing Jenkins Burrito, and a variety of burgers, sides and sandwiches such as a classic fried bologna sandwich and a stuffed philly cheesesteak.

Fletcher Br0s have no plans to change their menu and to stick with what they know the community wants and loves, and both Thomas and Esmy share the same sentiment about the support they’ve received since their tires hit the pavement.

“We’re thankful and grateful for all of our regular and new customers, and we’re thankful for the support, and we hope we have continued support. We’re gonna keep on truckin’!”

To find out where they’re going to be next, check out their Facebook page.

Steeped in History

There’s always something to see and learn in this town we are proud to call home. With its rich history, many of Pampa’s buildings and structures will tell a story.

For the absolute best experience in gaining historical knowledge about not only Pampa, but the entire Texas Panhandle, visit the White Deer Land Museum at 116 S. Cuyler. Spend the day (yes, there’s THAT much to see!) checking out all the exhibits and displays that the beloved time capsule has to offer. Take some time to talk to the museum’s director, Anita Gullett who carries some fascinating information regarding anything Texas Panhandle related.

Walk in the footsteps of famous folk singer, Woody Guthrie as you make your way to 320 S. Cuyler, right down the street from the White Deer Land Museum. Nestled in the original building that the singer and songwriter worked, Harris Drugs, the Woody Guthrie Folk Music Center houses tons of memorabilia and the Center’s Executive Director, Michael Sinks, can tell you some really interesting stories about just how much of a role Pampa played in Woody’s success. Check out the jam sessions held every Friday night from 6PM to 8:30 PM. Pampa’s main street, Hobart, holds one of the best military museums in the Texas Panhandle, the Freedom Museum USA. With the tanks, war planes and helicopters on its front lawn, the museum can’t be missed and is well worth visiting. Its walls are filled with historic, authentic items from many wars and battles and the stories that are told through its exhibits are sure to move you.

The Lovett Memorial Library gives an air of nostalgia immediately upon walking through its doors. No one can deny that there’s nothing quite like the smell and atmosphere of a library and it’s a universal feeling that has carried over through the generations. The Lovett Memorial Library carries books from old to brand new releases, and even works from local authors. They always have programs throughout the year that actively encourages young ones to pick up a book and let their imagination run wild.

POINTS of Interest

Historical Downtown Pampa

It has been said that the heart and soul of any town is its downtown and without it, there’s no doubt that the town wouldn’t survive.

For Pampa, that heartbeat has remained strong and everything from the culture to the community has thrived and flourished even over 100 years later.

Most of Pampa’s history can be told just by traveling along the red bricked streets, whether you’re driving along Million Dollar Row where the courthouse, city hall and fire station sit in alignment and stand as operational monuments that tell of Pampa’s booming growth in the 1930s, or you’re walking along Cuyler Street and stopping in the many stores and boutiques the blocks have to offer.

There’s certainly something for everyone in these quaint, locallyowned and community-supported businesses and you’re guaranteed to be greeted with a friendly smile with every visit.

It’s highly recommended to stroll through the historic blocks because there’s so much to be seen and admired, such as the Art Deco architecture and style that nearly all of the structures downtown possess, including the iconic Combs-Worley building across from City Hall; a gentle giant steeped in a rich history that is fully operational and contains numerous businesses and services within its walls.

Even walking through the doors of some of the buildings on Cuyler will take you back in time as many of the floors and ceilings are still in their original, yet preserved state.

It’s no wonder that many of Pampa’s most-anticipated events occur right there on the bricks, such as the everpopular Burnin’ the Bricks car show and burnout every June and the festive late-night Christmas shopping event where bright and colorful lights illuminate decorated store fronts.

Some of Pampa’s best eatin’ can also be done downtown, whether it’s at the historic Coney Island Cafe, the vintage and retro Finley’s Fountain or the atmospheric Coffee Shop for a light lunch.

The spirit of Pampa undoubtedly resides in its downtown and once you’ve traveled along those red bricks, Pampa will always feel like home.

Shop Pampa First!

There’s plenty of shopping that can be done right here in Pampa where you’ll find some of the finest boutiques, gift shops, flower shops, clothing stores, restaurants, and much more. And what’s even better, they’re locallyowned, which means that by supporting local businesses, you’re helping the community thrive and take even more pride in this little slice of Texas. Most of these shops can be found in our historic downtown area, but there are many all throughout Pampa. Check these out!

Fun for the Entire Family

While Pampa may have many seasonal events that occur throughout the year, our town also offers that classic, family-friendly entertainment that is always accessible no matter the time of year.

The Zone Bowling Center, located at 1401 S. Hobart, is the go-to place for wholesome fun for the entire family. Whether you’re an amateur bowler or want to join a seasoned league, the Zone has what you’re looking for. With an impressive arcade and built-in restaurant, the decision on where to have your next party is an easy one. The Zone has also recently added in a bar for the adults who need to unwind, have a brewski and watch the latest football game.

There’s nothing quite like going to a movie theatre to catch the latest flick, and Cinema 4, located at 1201 N. Hobart, Suite 10, always has the newest releases. Whether you’re an avid horror lover who’s been eagerly awaiting the latest slasher film, or the newest Marvel mashup, Cinema 4 has a seat and a big tub of buttery popcorn waiting for you. Be sure to check their website every Friday for new releases and showtimes.

Looking for something do to on the weekend

to help you decompress from a long week? Well, Weekends Sports & Entertainment, located at 1300 N. Price Road, has you covered! The vastly spacious area offers five axethrowing bays with 15 different digital games to play for ages 10 and up, as well as two large interactive bays that can fit up to ten people with several more games to play such as shooter, golf, basketball, football and many others, with all the equipment you need to play provided to you. Be sure to check out their hightech, self-serve, beer-on-tap wall and the many different food trucks that rotate each week. Ready to book that next birthday party or summer event? Check out Putt Around Or Two, located at 900 N. Duncan, for some outdoor miniature golf that will keep the kiddos and

The Return of a Pampa Gem: Putt Around or Two

For those of us who grew up in Pampa in the 90s, going to play puttputt golf was certainly a treat. It was the perfect mix of outdoor fun and sport, especially for those of us who weren’t big golfers and just wanted to, well..putt around or two!

Just when we thought those days were far behind us, our beloved outdoor course opened back up after over a decade of being closed.

“We actually started back up in May,” Tristan Bagwell said. “Me and my sister both play basketball, so we started it as a fundraiser and the next week, we opened up.”

“This was originally my grandpa’s and they opened it I believe in ‘94 and closed around 2012. Me and

my grandpa always shared a little common interest in mini golf, so we decided it would be cool to open it back up.”

The course is just as we all remember it, except the turfs have been replaced, the ponds have been cleaned, and the obstacles have been updated. Everything else is the same, and for those of us who tend to linger in our childhood nostalgia, we couldn’t be happier.

“It’s very nostalgic. I’ve had people come here and say they played here as a kid or they used to work here. It’s just really great.”

Featuring 18 holes of fun, and perhaps a bit of frustration for those with a big swing and little patience,

Putt Around or Two promises an afternoon of entertainment for the whole family.

As of right now, the establishment will be closed during the school year and have plans to open back up in the summer, but Tristan says they are open for bookings for birthday parties and events.

For more information or to book a party or event, head over to their Facebook page and shoot a message.

How a Classic Game Has Brought a Community Together

Honestly, who doesn’t love a good game of Bingo?

Anticipating the announcement of the next number, the wave of excitement when you realize that number was exactly the one you needed and you yell “BINGO!”, trying to pick a prize when there’s just too many great ones to choose from, and then clearing the board and starting it all over again. It wasn’t always easy to catch a game of Bingo in Pampa unless you just happened to know about it, but now, monthly Bingo has become a Pampa tradition. Folks from all ages and all walks of life have embraced the new tradition, and it’s not uncommon to see a packed house.

On the first Tuesday of the month, stop by the Pampa Senior Citizens Center, located at 500 W. Francis, at 6 PM for a few of hours of Bingo fun. At just $1 per card and a ton of fantastic prizes to choose from, this

monthly event really brings out the crowd.

On the third Thursday of the month, stop by the Pampa VFW Post 1657, located at 105 S. Cuyler, at 5:45 PM for chili dogs, drinks, dessert, and of course, Bingo, for just $8.00. It’s a sweet price for all the fun and grub you’ll get, and not to mention the impressive prizes as well.

All proceeds made from the events go directly to the operation of the Pampa Senior Citizens Center and the Pampa VFW.

These Bingo nights have been made possible by their hosts, Interim Home Health & Hospice and Meredith Court Assisted Living, who both are beloved gems of Pampa, as well as the many volunteers, sponsors, and support of the community.

So mark your calendars, grab the family, and get ready to shout the name of the game!

Fun in the Summer Sun

Texas is known for its heat and the Panhandle is no exception, but it’s easy to beat the heat when Pampa has plenty of events that’ll keep you cool and entertained.

The Hometown Independence Day Celebration is the perfect way to show your patriotic spirit. The event begins first thing in the morning with a 5K run starting at the Freedom Museum USA, followed by a parade, and the rest of the day is full of games, music and tons of entertainment at Recreation Park. From the classic pie and hotdog eating contests and cornhole tournaments to the moving veteran tribute and spectacular fireworks show once the sun goes down, 4th of July in Pampa is really something to see.

The Top O’ Texas Rodeo is a two-day event that brings in people from around the country, either to spectate or to participate. Whether it’s the Mutton’ Bustin Extravaganza or the Bronc Riding with many other categories in between, you’ll undoubtedly have a great time. Make sure to slow the adrenaline-pump-

ing night down by cuttin’ a rug at the dance with live music after the rodeo performances.

PampaFest is a city-wide outdoor music concert that brings in the best vendors, food trucks and musicians this part of the country has to offer. The event is located right there on the historic red bricks of Cuyler Street in Downtown Pampa. So pull up a lawn chair and let the music take you away.

So Long Summer is Pampa’s last summer event and takes place on Labor Day in Central Park. The event is a celebration as we wave goodbye (for now) to the hot summer months and welcome in Autumn, and what better way to do that than a free community shin-dig that features a pancake breakfast, 5K run, live music, games, prizes and local vendors and food trucks?

Be sure to also check with our schools and churches about summer camps and Vacation Bible School to keep the kiddos active, physically, mentally, and spiritually during those long summer months!

Bring on the Fall COMMUNITY Events

With school starting back up, Fall in Pampa is a time to relax and enjoy the cooler weather.

The Country Fair put on every year by the Chamber of Commerce in October is quite the event with a different theme each year. The fair gives adults an opportunity to have some Halloween-season fun and dress up with the year’s theme and enjoy a night of music, drinks, delicious dining and socialization. During Halloween, many of Pampa’s businesses, organizations and churches will feature Trunk or Treat and there’s no doubt that your child’s candy bucket will be overflowing by the end of the night. Make sure to check out the Haunted Library the Lovett Memorial Library hosts every year for some family-fun thrills and chills, and the big Harvest Festival put on by First Baptist Church for a ton of fun games, prizes, and of course, candy! To find out what places have a Halloween event going on, make sure to pick up a newspaper at The Pampa News where all events will be listed for your convenience! Fall in Pampa is also football season, so check out a game or two and show some Harvester Spirit!

The Chamber’s Cortnie Hale at the 2024 Country Fair

Christmas in Pampa

There is always something festive happening in Pampa during those cold winter months that’ll be sure to get you in the Christmas spirit!

Lighting Up the Bricks in Downtown Pampa is always such a special event as it kicks off the holiday season. Brightly lit store fronts illuminate the streets, welcoming folks through the doors for some latenight local shopping and of course, hot cocoa. Santa can also be spotted downtown so kiddos can get their requests in early!

What better way to beat the chill than soup with Mrs. Claus? Every year she makes an appearance at the Knights of Columbus downtown where she spreads holiday cheer over a bowl of warm soup and a story. Every year, Pampa’s Celebration of Lights brings folks from all over the Panhandle to Recreation Park with its interactive light displays. The route is easily

driveable so take your time to get a look at the many displays out there, but don’t forget to step out and pet the reindeer. Yes, reindeer!

The annual Christmas Parade is the biggest (and brightest!) parade in Pampa and it’s the only one that occurs at night, and for good reason! Beginning at the MK Brown Auditorium, the many colorful and brightly lit floats make their way down Somerville and through Downtown, lighting up the town in the early dark night.

Going to see The Nutcracker has been a generational tradition every year, and Pampa always puts on a wonderful show. It’s easy to become mesmerized by the performance of those talented dancers and deserves going to see again for the second showing. Pampa has many other pop-up events around during Christmas, such as the PAWS Craft Show and Story

Events

Time with the Grinch and Mrs. Claus, so be sure to keep an eye out on what’s coming up!

To mark the beginning of the New Year, the Pampa VFW Post 1657 hosts a New Year’s Eve Bash that will have you ringing in the year on the right foot (as soon as you’re done on the dance floor!) With a silent auction, live music, great food and endless drinks, the New Year’s Bash is certainly an event that can’t be missed!

Jumping Into Spring

Jump into Spring with one of Pampa’s many community events that will bring you outside in the fresh air. The City Wide Easter Egg Hunt is a great way to get your littles involved in an outdoor activity and to burn off that energy stored up during those winter months. While the City Wide Easter Egg Hunt is a one-day event, there are many churches around Pampa that also have their own, so be sure to keep an eye out for dates and locations!

The Pride of Pampa Band Carnival brings in the thrills with a variety of carnival rides, from the classic Pirate Ship and Gravitron to the relaxing Swing ride and fearinducing High Drop. Make sure to stop by the Pride of Pampa Band food trailer for one of their infamous turkey legs or mouth-watering burgers.

The High Plains Cruisers/Burnin’ the Bricks Car Show and Burnout the second weekend in June brings out the best of the best in muscle, classic and antique cars and trucks. Stick around as these car gurus show off their rides and streak the red bricks of Downtown Pampa

during the burnout.

In March, head to Shamrock just about an hour away from Pampa to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with their 2-day fun-filled event that includes a parade, carnival, rodeo, numerous contests and a craft show.

Finding Your Church Home

One of the first things you may notice if you’re cruising around Pampa is the number of churches the town offers. Many of our churches have some of the oldest congregations in the Panhandle and many of the buildings are gorgeous.

But we all know it’s what’s within those walls that counts, and all of the churches in Pampa have folks that welcome any newcomers with open arms, so finding your church family won’t be a difficult task. From Baptist and Methodist to Catholic and non-denominational, there’s a church to suit every spiritual need.

Many of our churches also stream their services live on Facebook and you can even catch sermons on local radio stations, but they’ll tell you that they would love to greet you at the church’s door step and worship right there along with you

Take a look at the Directory on page 46 for the list of churches in Pampa and surrounding communities to find your perfect church home and family!

St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, located at 727 W. Browning

Vacation Bible School and Summer Camps

Sometimes finding something to keep the kiddos occupied during those long summer months can be challenging, but Pampa always has something going on that will keep them physically and socially active.

Many of our churches host Vacation Bible School, and what’s great is these week-long events are scattered throughout the summer, so kids can have a blast at one, and have a blast at another one a week or so later. Kids and parents don’t have to members of the church to sign up for Vacation Bible School. All you need is a positive attitude and a ton of energy because these churches always have so many great and exciting things planned and know how to have some fun!

One of the most anticipated events of the year is the Kicking Bear Camp, a one-day, outdoor camp that features archery, fishing, a gun range for paint ball, BB guns and rifles, and a wide variety of fun activities for the whole family.

It’s not uncommon to see more than 200 kids and families from all over the panhandle attend this fantastic camp, and once you’ve been, you’ll want to make a yearly tradition out of it.

Pampa Youth & Community Center Set to Expand, Preserving Long-Lasting Legacy

Earlier in August of this year, the Pampa Youth & Community Center held a groundbreaking ceremony to signify the exciting changes and expansion the beloved establishment will be undergoing for the next year and a half.

PY&CC Board President, Dr. Jay Johnson informed everyone who came to celebrate the event what the plans are and expressed his gratitude for the community support the youth center has received since its conception, while also sharing fond childhood memories of the time he spent there with many others in attendance feeling the same sentimentality.

“This is really an exciting time for all of us, but I think also for our city,” Jay said. “This building right here has been here since 1960, and it has functioned very well. It’s been a great building for a lot of young people and not just the young people.”

The youth center was established in 1954 by a group of locals who wanted to provide a place for people of all ages to be physically (and socially) active. The center still serves that same purpose today and has since become a generational tradition for many of Pampa’s residents.

“Pampa was fortunate to have those far-sighted individuals who were on that committee, and were also smart enough and far-sighted enough to buy this whole property here. We own all this property plus the property right across the street. We rent that baseball field for $1 a year, so you can see our goal is not a good model for a business. Our goal is to provide something for the community that everyone can afford and everyone can enjoy. I’ve talked to people who have said we should charge more for our services, and that’s never been our goal and fortunately it’s never had to be our goal.”

With a ton of property at the center’s disposal, Dr. Johnson envisioned the potential expansion and upgrade of the existing facilities, and through the suggestions and support of the community backing him, he decided to turn that vision into reality.

“In a snowstorm one day about three and a half or four years ago, I sat out here with a friend of mine who was an engineer and said, ‘what do I need to do to get this moving?’ He gave me some good advice and told me who to talk to and how to get the ball rolling from an engineering standpoint. I’ve had other people that got on

our board that helped and encouraged it. Lee Waters I want to mention because he is the President of the M.K. Brown Foundation, and they are going to give us a nice gift. Lee came to me five years ago and said, ‘we’re looking for something that will make a significant difference in Pampa for the next several years. Do you think the youth center is something we could put money into that would give Pampa something that they could be proud of?’ The M.K. Brown Foundation has done several things here in Pampa, and so I want to give Lee credit for getting me moving on this whole thing. There’s a lot of good people in Pampa that have reached in their pockets and written checks, a lot of great people and foundations.” “What we’re going to do is the pool area and the old facility over there will be demolished, and because this building right here is in really good shape on the inside, we’re going to tie onto it and build everything out here (toward the west). It is 28-29,000 square feet, so it will

the Pampa Youth & Community Center you will find a wide variety of excercise options available to help you get or stay in shape!

be a big facility with a six-lane pool. We don’t charge the school district for what we’re doing and haven’t for many years. The swim team meets here, the tennis meets here when the weather is poor, and we’ve even had the basketball time here when they remodeled McNeely a few times. Our goal is to share what we have here with our community.”

The construction crew who will be working on the project is Sawatzky Construction out of Weatherford, Oklahoma, and one member of the crew, Mac McCune, has ties to Pampa and is excited to be building something for a town and community he has a fondness for.

“We had an office out here back in the 80s outside of town and I spent a lot of time in Pampa,” Mac said.

“When Jay called and said, ‘hey, your grandpa added on to this building a long time ago and I want you to come look at it,’ I said, ‘I’ll be there tomorrow!’ I’m excited to be back in Pampa and helping you guys out and I’m excited about the project. There’s a lot of memories here for me.”

Jay also mentioned that the project is expected to take between 12-14 months, with a projected date in early 2027, if not right before.

“One of our goals was to get dirt moved by August 15, so we’re ahead of that thanks to Carter Sand and Gravel right down the road there,” Mac said. “We’re going to start moving some dirt around, and hopefully we’ll have another notice to proceed by October 1, so I would say

hopefully right before 2027.”

Jay also mentioned that during this time, the facilites will stay in operation and the construction will have little to no interruption or disruption in the day-to-day activities. Although the groundbreaking has only started, Jay is excited for what the future holds and his vision is to utilize all the property the youth center owns and expand their services.

“I would love to see a Phase Two and build some more gymnasiums and stuff like that for pickleball and volleyball tournaments, little league basketball and things like that, to bring in sports tourism to our town. Those are my long-term goals.”

Mayor Mike Borger was also in attendance for the ceremony and expressed his excitement for this new endeavor.

“As citizens of Pampa, we thank you Jay Johnson for your passion and energy to get this done. This is great news!”

“I’m really excited and we’ve got a lot of work to do,”

Jay closed. “We’ve got a great board that is very supportive and I’m looking forward to great things here.

I’m excited to have Sawatzky on board with us, and I’m encouraged by all of you who encourage us here. Thank you all for being here today.”
