Meet the Board of Directors Collaboration is important among professionals in local, regional, statewide and national levels

Dr. Robert Hayes serves as the Executive Director of the Corbin Housing Authority. He and his board strive daily to foster a sense of safety, security, and positive progress within the local community. The goal, in a word, is “excellence.”

While Corbin may be Dr. Hayes’ main base of operation, he has also dedicated much time and effort to aiding other housing authorities throughout the region while serving in a consultant capacity. In doing so, his hope is to demonstrate the importance, and the overall usefulness, of ongoing collaborative efforts among professionals in a common discipline.

Hayes also brings this message of collaboration to his role as a Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce board member. As a board member, he regularly attends chamber functions and helps to promote important, transformative developments within the local business community.

held in the community room of the newly remodeled Cooper Building in downtown Corbin.

Hayes is excited to be serving in a new role in the coming months after being selected to sit on the Legislative Committee for the Public Housing Authorities Directors Association (PHADA). He and Corbin Housing Authority Board Chairman Mark Daniels attended the PHADA Legislative Forum in Washington D.C. earlier this year. The event gave the duo a front row seat to conversations currently taking place at the national level regarding trends in affordable housing, advocacy efforts, financial challenges, and more.

40 years of ‘Happier Banking’:

Forcht Bank celebrates milestone anniversary in 2025

In 1985, Terry Forcht and a small group of investors opened what would come to be known as Forcht Bank in Corbin, KY. 40 years later, the bank has grown to include 23 banking centers in Kentucky and southern Ohio.

Forcht Bank’s incredible growth can be attrib uted primarily to the vision of its founder, and to the contributions made by the hundreds of indi viduals who have been employed by the bank over the past four decades. Both of these were recog nized recently at a special 40-year anniversary celebration event that was held at the Heart of Grace Farm in London, KY.

“Terry, on behalf of all of the bankers, their spous-

es, and the family members here with us today, we thank you for being the driving force that has elevated the bank to where it is today,” said Forcht Bank President and CEO Tucker Ballinger at the Sept. 27 event.

“There is no bank out there that is as equally committed to serving their community markets as we are, and there is no bank out there that does it with the style and commitment that we do each and

every day. And we have the receipts to back it up,” Ballinger said. “In just the past two years, our bank employees have committed over 5,000 hours of their time and talent to uplifting our community markets. In addition, we’ve contributed more than

$400,000 to philanthropic support, helping fuel meaningful change in the communities where it is needed the most.”

In addition to recognizing Mr. Forcht for his many years of steadfast leadership, Ballinger also took the opportunity to thank many others at the celebration event, including Mrs. Marion Forcht, of whom he said, “Every successful entrepreneur that I know has an amazing partner that is often not in the front view, but is the driver behind the scenes that holds the pieces together and keeps everything moving forward. Thank you for your vision, and for your commitment to keeping us all moving in the right direction.”

Other special recognitions included Forcht Group President Debbie Reynolds, General Counsel Rodney Shockley and his wife, Laurie, Human Resources Director Reda Shemelya, Chief Information Officer Greg Horsman, Chief Marketing and Communications Director Michael Goins, and President of Cumberland Valley Insurance Allen Marcum.

“I also want to thank the bank’s executive team,” Ballinger continued. “This team is truly amazing. Every day they ask themselves, ‘How can we do it better?’ If I’ve learned anything in my 30 years of banking, it’s that my success is directly attributed to the talented people that I surround myself with

each and every day. Thank you for your commitment to achieving success at the highest level.”

Of course, Ballinger thanked all of the Forcht Bank employees, many of whom traveled from hours away to be present at the Sept. 27 event in London, saying, “To our amazing employees, thank you. Each of you is a key ingredient to our success. You are the secret recipe that continues to set our bank apart from our competition. Your dedication, your passion and your excellence shine through each and every day, and we are deeply grateful for your commitment. You truly make us better.”

After Ballinger’s remarks, a special video package chronicling the 40-year history of Forcht Bank was shown. The video includes comments from Mr. Forcht, and can be viewed by scanning the QR code accompanying this article with your mobile device.

Forcht Bank honored by political leaders

As Forcht Bank has celebrated its 40th year of serving customers throughout 2025, Terry and Marion Forcht have had the opportunity to be a part of some special recognitions to commemorate this amazing achievement.

Kimberly Bussell - Marketing Director, Mike Sharpe - Regional President, Tucker Ballinger - President and CEO, Suzie Razmus - Corbin City Mayor, Marion Forcht, Terry Forcht - Bank President and CEO, Zem Delk - Banking Officer, Wendi Dizney - AVP and Financial Center Manager, Hannah Woosley-Collins - Marketing Specialist.

Earlier in September, the Forchts were accompanied by Ballinger, Regional President Michael Sharpe, and several other bank representatives as Corbin Mayor Suzie Razmus signed a special proclamation officially declaring Sept. 12 as “Forcht Bank Day” in the City of Corbin. The day is recognized in honor of the bank’s beginnings in 1985, when the former Tri-County National Bank first opened its doors.

The day was made extra special by the fact that Razmus’ mother, Nelda Barton-Collings, was a longtime friend and business associate of Mr. Forcht. The first woman to serve as chair of the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, Barton-Collings passed in 2014 at the age of 85.

In March, Mr. Forcht made the trip to Washington D.C., where he was recognized by United States Representative James Comer (R, 1st District) with a special House Resolution.

The resolution read, “I rise today to recognize Terry Forcht, Forcht

Group of Kentucky Chairman and CEO of Forcht Bank, for an impressive forty years of service and dedication to communities across the Commonwealth including the 1st Congressional District. The core banking principles of Forcht Bank are respecting the customer, offering competitive rates, and serving the community. Across Kentucky, with twenty-three banking centers and three loan production offices, Forcht Bank continues to serve Kentuckians and Bluegrass businesses.”

“Mr. Forcht’s role has allowed the enhancement and visionary leadership of Forcht Bank to celebrate this fortieth anniversary, signifying exceptional dedication and service to Kentucky communities,” the resolution went on to say. “I consider Terry Forcht a close friend and I appreciate all that he has done for all the communities in Kentucky and all the charitable organizations. I congratulate him on his outstanding achievement.”

A New Chapter: Dr. Quentin Young welcomed as University of the Cumberlands’ 11th president

The University of the Cumberlands (UC) is beginning a new and exciting chapter as Dr. Quentin Young has succeeded Dr. Larry Cockrum in the role of president. Young will serve as the 11th president in the university’s illustrious 137-year history.

Cockrum, meanwhile, makes the transition to President Emeritus after a decade of strong leadership that was marked by incredible growth and remarkable innovation.

to continue as he oversees operations from the president’s office.

Young recently served as the special guest presenter at the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce’s October membership luncheon, which took place on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Williamsburg Tourism and Convention Center.

Dr. Young, who initially came to the university in 2016, has served in various capacities leading up to his appointment as president, including Executive Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer. Holding these titles has allowed him to play a key role in fostering institutional growth in recent years, a goal that he now hopes

During his presentation, Young spoke about how UC is continuing to invest in its students, saying, “In the fall of 2024, we introduced new scholarships for our on-campus undergraduates, with a clear goal…to help students graduate with little-to-no debt. Today, fulltime on-campus undergraduates pay on average no more than $4,000 per year out of pocket, making a high-quality education at Cumberlands within reach for more students than ever before.”

“The Cumberlands Commitment reflects our belief that a transformative education must also be an attainable one, and the impact is clear,” Young added. “According to U.S. News and World Report, Cumberlands students graduate with the lowest average stu dent-loan debt in Kentucky and rank highest in social mobility among the state’s universities. That means our stu dents are graduating, finding meaningful work, and impacting their families for generations.”

Young also spoke about the importance of building community partnerships in order to achieve growth throughout the region, saying, “We know that we can’t do this work alone.

That’s why we’re working to build stronger relationships with local school districts, healthcare providers, govern ment agencies, and employers across the region. That’s why we are engaging with the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and sponsored this year’s SOAR Summit. We’re listening. We’re learning. And we’re looking for ways to align our programs with the needs of our communities.”

versity community. He brings both a deep understanding of Cumberlands and a clear vision for its future. The Board looks forward to working alongside him as we continue advancing the university’s commitment to students and to service.”

Young extended an open invitation to local business leaders, saying he would like to hear from those who might have ideas for future collaborative efforts that could help to shape the future workforce in the region.

Cockrum, Board of Trustees Chair comment on Young’s installment

On the day that Dr. Young was installed as the University of the Cumberlands’ newest president, a release was sent out by the university that included comments from both Dr. Cockrum and Board of Trustees Chair Scott Thompson.

“Dr. Young has been an integral part of our leadership team and a driving force behind many of the initiatives that have strengthened our institution,” Cockrum was quoted as saying in the release. “He is deeply committed to our mission and values, and I am confident that under his leadership, Cumberlands will continue to thrive.”

Thompson added to Cockrum’s comments in the release, saying, “Dr. Young is a thoughtful, mission-driven leader who has earned the respect of his colleagues and the trust of our uni-

University of the Cumberlands’ Center for Professional Development dedicated to creating tomorrow’s workforce, today

Amodern economy requires modernization of the workforce, and that, simply put, is what the Center for Professional Development at the University of the Cumberlands is all about.

“What we do is workforce training,” explained Dr. Donnie Grimes, CEO. “It’s different from the university, though, because if you want to take a university class, you will typically have to go through the enrollment process and then wait for the next onboarding time to start your class. What we do is offer training that is specific to a discipline. With us, you could start your course tonight, work at your own pace, and then take a certification exam at the end of that course.”

gram in a relatively brief amount of time, and then be ready to pursue a lucrative career in a variety of different fields. As he explained, however, job-related skills training is really just half of what the center does.

“The other half of what we do is working with businesses and determining what their specific needs are,” Grimes said. “Many of the businesses in our area need to upskill their employees in some way, so we work with them to create custom training packages.”

We believe in focusing on our local community first, and then going out from there.

Grimes said that, depending on how quickly someone is able to navigate through their online coursework, they could complete a training pro-

As an arm of the University of the Cumberlands, the Center for Professional Development has access to a large pool of knowledgeable individuals across multiple disciplines who can be called upon to assist with the development of these programs. As Grimes put it, “We have the full support of the university behind us, with experts from different academic departments on

campus coming in and helping us tailor specific trainings for an organization.”

In its first 16 months of existence, Grimes said that the Center for Professional Development has been able to train thou sands of people. While those efforts have been primarily focused on the central and eastern portions of the state so far, he said that the operation is now ready to expand. Ultimately, the goal is to obtain a national reach within the next couple of years.

“We believe in focusing on our local community first, and then going out from there,” Grimes said. “We just launched a new initiate with a comprehensive cata log of courses ranging from vocational programs to training in advanced AI. Those will be purely online, and we will market those around the country.”

“We wanted to figure out what we were doing initially, and how we could impact the most people,” Grimes contin ued. “Now that we’ve done the market research, we are expanding. Basically, we have taken the same approach that the university has taken. We’re following a similar approach.”

Whether you are a business owner looking to provide additional training for your current workforce, or you are an individual who would like to receive train ing in a particular field, you can explore the programs that the University of the Cumberlands’ Center for Professional Development has to offer right now by visiting www.professionalskills.com.

Trinity Family Health enters new chapter of leadership

Trinity Family Health in Corbin is entering a new chapter of leadership with CEO

Charles Lovell, who brings more than 30 years of health care administration experience and a vision to expand the clinic’s visibility across the tri-county area.

Lovell spent most of his healthcare career in Western Kentucky before moving to the region in 2015 to serve as CEO of Barbourville ARH Hospital. He retired briefly in 2024 but said the opportunity to join Trinity came at the right time.

“It was a great change for me,” Lovell said. “I thought I was ready to retire, but after a few months, I noticed I had done all my to-do list projects.”

“If they are under a certain level of poverty guidelines, then they can be seen at no cost to them,” Lovell said.

Lovell stepped into the CEO role this summer with a focus on strengthening operations, improving efficiency, and increasing awareness of the services Trinity Family Health offers.

“When I’d mention I was going to work at Trinity, people would ask, ‘Where is that?’ I would say, ‘You drive by it every day,’” Lovell said. “Part of my plan is to make people more aware of Trinity

Trinity Family Health provides a wide range of services. Some of the primary care services they provide are women’s health, annual wellness visit, preventive care, DOT physicals, and more.

Some of the Behavioral Health services they provide are substance abuse treatment, psychiatric care, behavioral and trauma therapy, autism assessments such as Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), ADHD diagnosis and treatment for all ages, play and art therapy, and more.

Lovell’s goal was to get Trinity Family Health more involved with the community. Lovell shared that the clinic had been a part of the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, but not active in it until recently. Lovell says he is very involved with the Knox County Chamber of Commerce as he currently serves as president of four years.

well as partner with places that offer services that they don’t currently provide.

“We’re very small at this time, but we have the opportunity and the space to expand and add more providers,” Lovell said. “I’d like to see us be able to look at offering some more specialty services. That’s one thing that we don’t currently do.”

Lovell emphasized team culture and communication. He holds regular staff meetings and luncheons.

Part of my plan is to make people more aware of Trinity and to understand the services we provide.

“I want every employee to feel like they’re part of the team,” Lovell said. “Nobody’s role is more important than anyone else’s, including mine.”
