Cindy Karch, City Manager
Cindy Karch City Manager
Howdy and welcome to Mineola--where history runs deep, the people are genuine, and the pace of life is just right. I’m Ben Kimmick, President of the Mineola Chamber of Commerce, and I couldn’t be more excited to have you here in our corner of East Texas.
Whether you’re a longtime local, new to town, or just swingin’ through for the weekend, we’re glad you’re here. Mineola isn’t just another stop on the map--it’s a living, breathing storybook of Texas heritage, southern hospitality, and good old-fashioned charm. We might be small in size, but we’re mighty in spirit.
Our downtown is something special--it’s officially recognized as a National Main Street City and listed on the state and national registers of historic places. That’s right--we don’t just preserve history, we live it. 150 years ago, the railroad rolled into Mineola and changed everything. Today, that same spirit of progress and pride still fuels our community.
We’re proud of our roots as a railroad town. From the restored train depot to the iconic red caboose, it’s a spot worth a stop--and a selfie. You can still hear that Amtrak whistle echo through town, and let me tell you, it never gets old. While you’re in the area, don’t miss Wisener Field, the oldest continuously operated, familyowned air-port in Texas. It’s a true gem and a testament to the spirit of independence that runs through Mineola.
Our downtown is full of brick streets and hidden treasures-antique shops, boutiques, art galleries, and locally-owned restaurants that’ll make you feel right at home. From live music venues to artisan markets, there’s always something to do and someone to meet. And if the outdoors is more your style, the Mineola Nature Preserve is 2,900+ acres of East Texas paradise. Horse trails, hiking, fishing, wildlife, even an 18-hole disc golf course--and it’s all free and open to the public. You won’t find that just anywhere.
Just down the road, Lake Fork awaits. It’s one of the top bass lakes in the country, holding 34 of the top 50 biggest bass ever caught in Texas. Whether you’re an expert angler or just casting a line with the kids, it’s the per-fect spot to relax and reel in a memory or two.
Need a place to stay? We’ve got everything from cozy bed and breakfasts to upscale vacation rentals and trust-ed hotel brands. And if you’re rolling into town with your RV, the Mineola Civic Center offers a top-notch place to park and unwind.
Mineola loves to celebrate, and we do it right. Every year, we host three major community events: Fiesta de Mayo, the Iron Horse Heritage Festival in September, and our lighted Christmas Parade in December. These aren’t just events--they’re experiences. Make a point to come enjoy the festivities and make a few memories with us.
Before you head out, stop by the Chamber Office, which doubles as the Wood County Visitor’s Center. We’d love to meet you, share some stories, and give you the inside scoop on where to eat, shop, and explore. We know Mineola’s special, and once you’ve spent a little time here, you’ll know it too.
See you around town!

The welcome mat is out and the course is calling
Quiet or lively, serene or athletic – it does not matter what your ideal setting for fun is, Mineola boasts plenty of enjoyable ways for the young and the young at heart to spend their time.
One of the newer and most popular attractions is the 2,911-acre Mineola Nature Preserve on the Sabine River. Visitors who include hikers, nature lovers, photographers, bird watchers, horsemen and bicyclists can enjoy the pastoral sight of grazing buffalo and longhorn cattle as they enter the park. The further you delve into the trails, the more chance you’ll have of spotting some of the documented 193 species of birds there. The preserve is the “Birding Capital of East Texas.” The wetland habitat also offers numerous species of plants and animals, as well as the tranquility and curiosities of nature.
In recent years a canoe landing has been developed for enthusiasts on which to launch and travel through the preserve along the Sabine River. Also at the preserve, archers can sharpen their skills at the at the park’s archery range. There are stocked fishing ponds (one of which is even ADA accessible), a pavilion with picnic tables and restrooms and a new playground area. The preserve is home to a new disc golf course that is gaining popularity in the
area and hosts tournaments from time to time.
While in town to visit the preserve, the varied businesses and chamber members in Mineola provide fun and intriguing places to shop, and the restaurants can tempt almost any palate from Texas barbecue to fantastic burgers and famous patty melts, juicy steaks, pizza, coffee, cafes, sweets, Mexican cuisine and even gluten-free choices.
Some of the other things that bring folks to town include the Mineola Youth Foundation, Meredith Memorial Football Stadium (home of the Class 3A Div. 1 State Champion football team), as well as the Mineola Civic Center, Mineola Country Club golf course, Select Theater, Lake Holbrook and the other nearby county lakes. Historic Wisener Field Airport, home of the Royal Flying Circus, Wood County Collins Field Airport and Highways 80, 69 and 37 are ways visitors arrive in town, not to mention Amtrak’s Texas Eagle that stops here regularly.
The Mineola Youth Foundation hosts the boys and girls of summer and has for generations. Meredith Memorial Stadium has hosted other towns’ championship games and most
recently, a high school marching band contest that drew droves of musicians and their entourages to Mineola. The country club and its golf course is one of Mineola’s oldest attractions. While it is a country club, you do not have to be a member or be with a member to play. It is considered one of the top 9-hole courses in the state.
Wisener Field Airport recently celebrated the 100th anniversary of the moment when a barnstormer touched down in a meadow on the northwest side of Mineola. Wood County Airport, with its modern-day accoutrements, was recently renamed to include the name of the late long-time and former board chairman, Wayne Collins, who has shepherded its development.
At the civic center, visitors will
find a fenced and secure area that incorporates concrete recreational vehicle pads with full hookups. One of Mineola’s newest attraction - a spectacular splash park - offers play areas for toddlers to teens alike. There is also a shaded pavilion with restrooms and a concession stand, as well as room for birthday parties or other events. There are lighted tennis courts, pickle ball courts, picnic tables and a playground, and sidewalks that stretch for a mile around and through the park. On any given day you will find joggers, tennis players, soccer teams, RV campers and pet owners enjoying the park on the northeast side of town. The center is also the location of Meredith Hall, one of the popular event locations in town.

Downtown Mineola
Historic preservation leads to economic development
Mineola became a Texas Main Street City in 1989 and in 2000 was chosen as a National Main Street city by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Sales tax revenues have been up for the past several months in Mineola and economic development is steadily growing.
downtown.
The business community has continued to grow with new restaurants and retailers in the past year and more to be opening or coming to town in the near future. This vitality is a result of efforts by many in the development of a strong, focused historic downtown district, with over $11 million of investment of public and private funds made in the central business district.
The Main Street Advisory Board’s mission is to use historic preservation as a method of maintaining a positive image to downtown, while creating economic growth for the community.
Main Street is the heart and soul of a community and with the city, merchants and the community’s strong commitment to revitalizing the historic homes and downtown area, Mineola continues to establish itself as a tourist destination. One of the newest efforts is the creation of the Iron Horse Square Project, a historical railroad park
The park hosts a mini-train that operates much of the year on Saturdays, a playground and little library, and a walking trail on the historic railroad bed. It is adjacent to the farmers market pavilion that hosts local vendors from May to October.
The Main Street Board, under the supervision of the city, continues to make successful strides in historic preservation, economic vitality in downtown, and a concentrated marketing program that will foster economic vitality in our community. The Main Street Program in Mineola is an outstanding example of what can be accomplished when the city, community and numerous volunteers work together to create and carry out a common vision!
Main Street hosts fundraisers such as Dueling Pianos, and downtown also plays host to Music in May.
Come visit Mineola today, where you can stroll down memory lane and shop at our unique antique, collectible and gift shops and dine at our various restaurants or just simply RELAX AND REJUVENATE IN OUR DOWNTOWN!

Mineola Arts & Culture
The Historic Select Theater in Mineola is the longest continuous operating movie theater in Texas.
First opening its doors in 1920, the Select has kept pace with the ever-changing technology of the motion picture industry while maintaining the charm of a single-screen theater in a small town, and that includes prices for tickets and concessions.
Mr. and Mrs. R.T. Hooks opened the theater as a movie house in 1920, and the building retains much of its historical style and ambiance today. In 1978, a group of actors determined to bring live theater to the Lake Country area formed the Lake Country Playhouse. They purchased the select in 1993, ensuring that Mineola would continue to have a movie theater and a venue for live theatrical and musical productions.
The Playhouse produces four live plays each year – one in each season – and shows first-run movies each weekend. Patrons especially love the summer musicals and Christmas shows.
The Select is also home to the Lake Country Symphonic Band, a 65-member community ensemble, which presents four scheduled performances during the year. Call 903-569-2300 or visit www.lakecountryplayhouse.com. You can also find them on Facebook under Lake Country Playhouse, the Historic Select Theater, and the Lake Country Symphonic Band.
The city is host to a growing inventory of murals by renowned international artists.
It houses three museums, at Wisener Field (aviation), at the train depot (railroad) and the Mineola Texas Historical Museum in the old post office.
Mineola retirement community
Mineola is very proud to be known as a Go-Texan Certified Retirement Community. Certification is given to qualified communities by the Department of Agriculture (www.gotexan.org).
Being a retirement community, Mineola has become well-quipped with the many needs and wants of the retirement population. We offer quite the selection of medical outlets in our town. The town also offers many different services in which seniors, as well as folks other other ages can participate, including the Mineola League of the Arts, the Lake Country Playhouse, and much more. The Mineola Senior Center hosts a wide variety of activities. Mineola is also home to a very large quilting fan base.
Our nationally recognized historic downtown offers a vast assortment of antique shops, gift shops, crafting and clothing stores, museums, coffee shops and wonderful dining options. The Amtrak station provides transportation seven days a week, and the Wood County Airport is just minutes away from the heart of Mineola. Historic Mineola
Wisener Field Airport is on the northwest side of town.
The arts are also alive with community concerts at the pavilion and park downtown and at other venues. Mineola is also a wonderful place to get involved in the many non-profit organizations we have to offer, such as Caring and Sharing, the Kiwanis, Rotary, Pilots and the Masonic Lodge and much more.
Our housing opportunities for seniors in Mineola are above and beyond. The town also offers senior housing within the community, an assisted living center and two nursing homes. The City of Mineola pays a fee to the ambulance service which prevents residents of the city limits who are insured from having to pay for transportation by ambulance when they have to go to the hospital. And those who don’t have insurance are billed substantially less. Meals on Wheels is also a program that is offered in the Mineola area.
The city of Mineola has everything anyone would want and need to relax, rejuvenate and retire!
