Historic LLANO

Life in Llano centers around the town square, on which sits the Llano County courthouse. Established as the county seat in 1853, the current (third) version of the courthouse, completed in 1893, lends a grand presence to a tiny town where a walk around the square offers both a step back in time, as one surveys historic architecture - lovingly trimmed in traditional paint palettes, and a vision for the future— just around the corner at the Tesla charging station.

An accredited Main Street city, old and new blend seamlessly as you jiggle a hundred year old brass door latch, give the door a little extra nudge, and enter any one of several ladies boutiques, all beautifully adorned in the latest in western and/or urban fashions. Wiggle the knob on any number of original oak doors around the square and scoot your boots over the well-worn wooden floors to a table by the window for a home style meal or a seat at the bar to whet your whistle. This is the kind of place where everybody knows your name.

A block off the square, within easy strolling distance, you’ll find a coffee house, art gallery, antique store, the psychedelically painted Shakedown Street alleyway ode to the Grateful Dead (complete with selfie-frame), and the surprising discovery of a series of irresistible lackadaisical mini staircases. You will want to play on them or photograph them, depending on your shoe size.

A few more steps will land you in jail…. at the historic Red Top, circa 1895. Tours/guides are usually available; all you have to do is call the number on the sign.

A walk across the the bridge offers a great view of the lazy Llano river— and even more to explore. An extension of the historic district, the old rail yard has much to share. Various rail cars stand ready for inspection as part of the Railroad Museum within the Llano Visitors Center “depot.” On the other side of the depot, a brand new Mining Exhibit showcases vintage tools of the trade, including a hand wrought eight foot tall metal winch that appears to be hoisting ore from the depths below. Next to it, a mine cart sits on an ore track which runs through the exhibit to a spoil pile outside the building, where more original machinery is on display. This along with the nearby Llano Museum, offers a glimpse of Llano days gone by.
Across the way, the Art Guild gallery showcases the work of more than sixty local artists. A few steps away, antique wares literally pour out of buildings onto the sidewalk, reminding us that days gone by are sometimes the most precious, and offering a little sentimental history to take home with you….shop til you drop like a local!

Llano, Texas ~ Living like a local NATURAL BEAUTY

A river runs through it.
When the rains have come and the river is running, nothing beats a kayaking trip down the Llano, where one can go for miles without seeing anyone or anything but rocks, trees, turtles, and maybe a few thirsty cows. Breathtakingly beautiful granite outcroppings and boulders fill the riverscape. They are also fun to climb and a great place to put out for a picnic! Many take a fishing rod, others a waterproofed camera. Points for putting in and out include Castell, Schneider, and Scott slabs; Robinson and Badu parks. All other land along the river is private. Bring your kayak and paddle like a local.

Badu Park, on the north side of Llano provides easy-access for swimmers and kayakers in a small lake just above the dam. There’s also a splash-pad water park for the kiddos. The park plays host to several Llano events.
On the south side of the river, downstream of the dam, the beauty of nature is alive and well at the rugged and rocky Grenwelge Park. Granite outcroppings invite climbers, shallow pools encourage

rock-skipping, bigger pools, fishing. Home to the Llano Earth Art Fest, you’ll see some LEAF art in various stages of returning to nature and be inspired to create some of your own and... stack ‘em like a local! Robinson City Park sits on the riverbank at the west end of town, next to the city golf course. The biggest of all the parks, it has picnic tables, a playscape for the kids, a community pool, a boat ramp for kayakers, a walking path along the river, and a shiny new pickleball court -- which will be ready for play by the time this heat wave is over! Home of the Crawfish Open, the pavilion by the river always packs a crowd for outdoor concerts.

A treasure trove for rockhounds and mineral panners alike, (yep you can still pan for gold in that there riverbed) the diverse geology of the Llano Uplift boasts an abundance of 241 different specimens. Here you’ll find easy access to an array of gems and minerals, including (and this is the only place you’ll find it) the distinctly blue and grey speckled llanite.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is located just 20 miles southwest of Llano. Rising 425 feet above the surrounding terrain, the pink granite granite batholith (the 2nd largest in the US) spans 640 acres. With eleven miles of hiking trails, and enough stamina to reach the top, you too can.... hike like a local.
A trip to the Llano hill country in springtime is a rite of passage. With prairie after prairie hillside covered in a sea of Texas Bluebonnets, the next valley in Indian Blanket, Pink Evening Primrose, Mexican Hat, Winecup, Butterfly Weed..... it’s like driving through a Monet. You’ve really got to see it to believe it...... to love it like a local.

FESTIVALS & EVENTS

The Llano Event Calendar has something for everyone. Like many a Texas town, Llano hosts its share of rodeos and car shows, but Llano also has several unique festivals and events it can truly call its own. You won’t find them anywhere else.
Merging music with tradition, the Llano Fiddle Fest celebrates both. With the finger flyin’ all-day Saturday competition for real fiddlers of all ages, followed by a concert by a noted fiddle band, to the Sunday morning Amazing Grace service, these players fill the Llano airwaves with the music of our ancestors. Let the music seep into your skin, whisper to your soul, tickling your bones, until you jump up with the rest of us locals and do a little jig. (1st Weekend in April)
Aside from first run movies and local theatrical productions, the refurbished 1927 Lantex Theater maintains another
Llano music tradition- hosting the Llano Opry every second Saturday of the month. The Lantex Theater is also home to the Llano Community Theater.
The Llano River Pumpkin Float is a visual delight. The Saturday before Halloween, children bring their carved pumpkins to the edge of the river at Badu Park. There, a crew of volunteers place the pumpkins on various set pieces just below the surface of the river, so that they appear to be floating on the water. As the sun sets the candles are lit.... It is quite a sight to behold. (Saturday before Halloween)
But wait, there’s more! That’s just the Original-to-Llano list of events. Llano’s got something goin’ every single weekend!
There’s no better place for a Jeep Jamboree than the Texas Hill Country, where drivers face some of the most challenging terrain in Texas. Held at Inks Lake Ranch,
this is a must for any Jeep owner. (March each year)
Beautifully restored turn of the century Chuck Wagons circle up at Badu Park on the Llano river for the annual Chuck Wagon Cook-off each spring. Dressed to the nine(teen hundred)’s in pioneer garb and equally outfitted with vintage cast iron pots and basic utensils, they compete in the heat to offer us the best chicken fried steak and potatoes, green beans, biscuits, and cobbler-to-die-for, in all of Texas. chow down like a local pioneer!
(1st Weekend in April)
Over 25,000 lbs. of crawfish meet their doom at the Llano Crawfish Open. The yearly fund-raiser draws a huge crowd as it packs a golf tournament, a rodeo, a motorcycle fun run, a corn hole tournament, and an auction, into one wild weekend. A variety of bands keep the music going most of the day and late into the evening. (Mid April).
Llano’s Rockin’ Riverfest at Robinson City Park is a Star Spangled family event! All ages can enter their craft in the Anything But A Boat Contest & Kayak Races. It’s also the home of Llano’s BBQ Boss State Championship Cook Off! There’s always a boatload of children’s activities, classic car show, food & craft vendors, live music all day; with a star studded concert & dance to finish the night, followed by a glittering All-American fireworks display over the Llano river. (July 4th Weekend)
The two day Llano Music Festival is held in Robinson City Park featuring the best in Texas and Red Dirt Music. Bring your own folding chair. (Last Weekend in September)
A Dickens of a Christmas, on the square and Starry Starry Nights, at Badu Park round out the event calendar in Llano with a celebration of all things Dickens, a Christmas parade, and a cornucopia of magical lights along the rivers edge. (1st Weekend in December)

Junk in the Trunk is just what it sounds like. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Sell your wares or find that one-of-a kind whateveritis you’ve always wanted. Set up is free every 4th Saturday, March-October, on the square, where you can join in the fun and ..... barter like a local.
For some of the Hill Country’s finest homegrown, homemade and handcrafted goods, visit Llano Farmers and Crafters Market from 9am-1pm, every 1st and 3rd Saturday on the square. Deer Hunting in Llano, Texas: A Tradition in the Heart of the Hill Country
Nestled in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, Llano is a small town with big notoriety. Often referred to as the “Deer Capital of Texas,” Llano is renowned for its unparalleled whitetailed deer hunting opportunities. With its high-density deer population, Llano has long been a top destination for hunters, drawing both locals and out-of-state enthusiasts eager to experience some of the best hunting in the country.
The Deer Capital of Texas
Llano’s claim to fame as the “Deer Capital of Texas” stems from its unique geographic location within the Llano Basin, an area known for its exceptional wildlife habitat. The basin boasts the highest density of white-tailed deer in the United States, with estimates showing one deer for every 2 to 3 acres. This thriving population of deer provides hunters with abundant opportunities throughout the hunting season.
The significance of Llano’s deer hunting heritage was officially recognized in 2023 when the Texas Legislature, through House Concurrent Resolution No. 82, designated the town as the official Deer Capital of the Texas Hill Country. This designation highlights the area’s importance not only as a premier hunting destination but also as a community that values the tradition and conservation of the sport.
A Prime Hunting Destination
Llano County is one of the largest
hunting areas in Texas, and its reputation for exceptional deer hunting is well-earned. The county is home to thousands of acres of ranch land, where both private and guided hunts are offered. Every year, more than 12,000 white-tailed deer are harvested in the region, making it one of the most productive deer hunting areas in the country.
The Llano Basin’s mixture of rugged terrain, dense forests, and open spaces creates an ideal environment for deer, and hunters can expect to see an impressive variety of wildlife. While white-tailed deer are the primary target, hunters in Llano also pursue other game species such as wild turkey, feral pigs, quail, and dove. The diversity of available game makes Llano a yearround destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
The Llano Outdoor Sports Expo
To kick off the hunting season, the Llano Chamber of Commerce hosts the highly anticipated “Llano Outdoor Sports Expo.” This exciting event takes place on the Friday before opening day from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Llano Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center. The expo is a celebration of all things outdoors, with educational seminars and demonstrations, free foodie samples, beverages, and the chance to win over $35,000 in prizes. It’s the perfect opportunity for hunters and outdoor enthusiasts to gather before the season begins, learn about

the latest hunting gear, and get the inside scoop on the best hunting spots in the region.
Local businesses, ranchers, and vendors come together to showcase their offerings, including hunting equip-
ment, clothing, and even taxidermy services. The event is a great way to network, share stories, and build excitement for the season ahead. It also serves as a reminder of the close-knit community spirit that defines Llano,
where hunting is not just a sport but a way of life.
Conservation and Tradition
The tradition of deer hunting in Llano is rooted in both conservation and culture. The high deer population in the Llano Basin is managed through careful wildlife management programs that help maintain the health of the herd and protect the local ecosystem. Local hunters work alongside wildlife experts to ensure that hunting practices remain sustainable, supporting both the environment and the economy. Moreover, hunting in Llano is more than just an activity—it’s a way for generations to bond over shared experiences and to pass down vital traditions. Whether it’s a father teaching his son the ways of the hunt or friends coming together for a weekend of camaraderie, deer hunting in Llano fosters a strong sense of community and connection to the land.
Year-Round Adventure
While deer hunting may be the focal point of Llano’s outdoor scene, the region offers year-round adventure for those who enjoy the outdoors. In addition to hunting, visitors can explore the stunning Hill Country landscape,
which is known for its breathtaking views, rolling hills, and crystal-clear rivers. Fishing, hiking, and birdwatching are just a few of the other outdoor activities available in Llano County. The town itself is full of charm, with local shops, eateries, and historical sites. After a successful day in the field, hunters can enjoy a relaxing evening in one of Llano’s welcoming establishments, sampling delicious Texas BBQ or grabbing a cold drink at a local watering hole.

HISTORY
Llano was founded in 1855 on the banks of the clear, spring-fed Llano River. The town was named after the Llano River, which runs through the area. Llano became the county seat of Llano County in 1856 and soon developed into a bustling center for agriculture, ranching, and trade. The arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century helped to further spur its growth. It was well established by 1860 with stores, saloons, and a hotel, yet there was no church in the rough frontier village. Llano was the last train stop for settlers heading west. Settlers going beyond Llano in wagons or on horseback faced hostile Indian territory and the rough West Texas terrain. In the late 19th century, the discovery
of iron ore near Llano sparked the “iron boom,” leading to the establishment of several iron furnaces and an industrial boom that brought new jobs and economic growth to the area.
Llano is rich with history of Indian conflicts, raids, and famous outlaws. Old railroad hotels dotted the border of the railyard and one of those, the Dabbs Railroad Hotel, is still in operation today. The entire downtown has been designated a National Historic District, and a comprehensive walking tour is a must for the short or long term visitor. Included are sites that are a must visit for anyone spending time in Llano - The Red Top Jail, the LanTex Theater, the Llano County Historical Museum, the Railyard District, the recently restored Llano County Courthouse, the Roy Inks Bridge and the beautiful city parks that wind along the banks of the pristine Llano River.

As the state’s official flower, bluebonnets paint the Hill Country in vibrant shades of blue, creating stunning views along roadsides, fields, and parklands. A drive through Llano during bluebonnet season feels like driving through a living painting, with the flowers carpeting the landscape against the backdrop of rolling hills. The best time to see them is typically from mid-March to early April, when the wildflowers are in full bloom. Llano is a prime spot for wildflow-
er enthusiasts, with its scenic drives and numerous parks, making it an ideal destination for those wanting to experience Texas in its most colorful form. Peak season varies each year, so check the blog at llanochamber.org for wildflower updates posted each Monday beginning March 1.
LLANITE
Llanite is a rare and beautiful rock found only in Llano County, Texas. It’s special because it has bright blue quartz crystals and pink feldspar pieces set in a brownish background, giving it a unique and eye-catching look. The blue color comes from tiny bits of a mineral called ilmenite.
This rock formed over a billion years ago during ancient volcanic activity. You can see a famous outcrop of Llanite along Texas State Highway 16, about nine miles north of Llano.
Llanite is sometimes called the “Stone of Harmony” because people believe it helps bring peace, boost intuition, and encourage kindness. Some even say it helps with spiritual growth and opening your heart and mind. The largest continuous piece of Llanite makes up the bar top at Joe’s Bar, located on the square in Llano.
LLANO COUNTY RED TOP JAIL
The Llano County Red Top Jail, constructed in 1895, is a prominent Romanesque Revival structure located along the south bank of the Llano River, one block east of Ford Street (State Highway 16 & 71) in Llano, Texas. Its distinctive red roof earned it the nickname “Red Top,” and inmates often referred to their incarceration as “staying over at the Red Top.” The jail’s design includes a four-story layout. The first floor originally housed the jailer’s living quarters and administrative offices. The second and third floors contained inmate cells, while the fourth floor featured a gallows. The exterior is constructed from locally quarried gray granite, contributing to its imposing presence.
The jail remained operational until 1982. Today, it stands as a historical landmark maintained by the Friends of the Llano Red Top Jail. Tours are offered on select Satur-
days or by appointment, allowing visitors to explore its storied past. For more information or to schedule a tour, please visit the official website at redtopjail.org.
