Terrell’s story began as a bustling “depot town” along the Texas and Pacific Railroad Company’s ambitious transcontinental line stretching from Longview, East Texas, to California. In 1873, visionary landowners led by Robert A. Terrell, an early pioneer and surveyor, donated 100 acres to the railroad in exchange for establishing a depot. This pivotal moment laid the foundation for what would become a vibrant community, expanding with an additional 100 acres to the north, contributed by Terrell and his partners.
The railroad quickly spurred growth, and by 1874, Terrell had incorporated with Col. J.W. Elder as its first mayor. Re-incorporated in 1875 under new Texas law, Terrell boasted a population of over 1,000 residents. Churches were established shortly after, and public schools opened their doors a decade later. In 1883, the town also became home to a state facility for the care of the mentally ill.
In the 1890s, Terrell’s role in shaping local history continued as it became the headquarters of the Texas Midland Railroad, one of the nation’s most prosperous short line railroads, with Col. E.H.R. “Ned” Green at the helm. Green, known for his adventurous spirit and business prowess, was the son of Hetty Green, once the richest woman in America. Ned Green made history by undertaking the first automobile trip in Texas from Terrell to Dallas, traveling at speeds of 20-25 mph, and experiencing Texas’s first auto accident when a farm wagon forced him off the road.
By 1920, the Terrell State Hospital was a leading institution in its field, housing 2,300 patients and
becoming the largest facility of its kind west of the Mississippi. Terrell was the commercial hub of the county, with its main street bustling every Saturday as farm families came to trade and socialize. During this era, Terrell earned the distinction of shipping more cotton than any other location globally.
World War II brought new significance to Terrell with the establishment of the No. 1 British Flying Training School as part of a Lend-Lease Agreement. Between 1941 and 1945, over 2,200 Royal Air Force cadets and U.S. Army Air Corps personnel earned their wings at the school. The airfield’s post-war transformation paved the way for the industrial diversification that characterizes Terrell today. Throughout the city, historical markers granted by the Texas Historical Commission highlight key structures and commemorate individuals, institutions, and events of historical importance.
Downtown Terrell is a charming turn-of-the-century Historic District that beautifully blends the past with the present. With vintage lighting, wide sidewalks, and carefully restored historic buildings, it offers a nostalgic yet lively atmosphere. Unique storefronts showcase stunning architectural details and have been thoughtfully repurposed into retail shops, restaurants, offices, lofts, museums, and specialty services.
At the 1925 Iris Theater, visitors can explore an eclectic mix of offerings, from rare and out-of-print
books to upscale consignment boutiques. You can even catch a vintage movie while sitting in the original theater seats. The district also features a series of hand-painted murals that capture Terrell’s rich history—depicting scenes like classic movie posters, a vintage biplane, an antique 1899 automobile, historic fi re engines, the Texas fl ag, and a nostalgic circus arrival.
As you stroll from one shop to the next, be sure to admire the historic buildings and murals, mapped out along the Wayfinding Kiosks throughout downtown.

Completed in 1904, this library building is located on land owned in the 1890s by local publisher O. B. Colquitt, who later became the governor of Texas. Through the efforts of the womens clubs of Terrell, the Andrew Carnegie Foundation provided funds for the building, and the City of Terrell contributed money for the library operations. It is now home to the Terrell Heritage Museum.
Another historic building is the St. John Catholic Church at 700 N Frances St. It is the oldest church building remaining in Terrell. Built in 1876 and remodeled in 1949, it has many beautiful stained-glass windows.
The Texas & Pacific Railroad Freight Depot at 200 S. Virginia was built in 1873, the year Terrell was founded. The building retains most of its original features, including three bays on its primary facade, a broad hipped roof, and freight doors on the north, south, and east sides. Once an integral part of the region's economy, this depot was closed in 1977. It remains a significant element of the town's railroad past.

Discover Terrell’s rich history and stunning architecture through its beautifully preserved historic homes. Located within the city’s oldest neighborhoods, these homes showcase unique architectural features, opulent interior design, and stately landscapes that have stood the test of time.
From the mid-1870s onward, Terrell became a haven for prominent figures in the railroad, farming, and banking industries of Northeast Texas. The wealth and influence of these families are still visible in the dozens of historic homes that grace the city today.
Among the most notable is the one-ofa-kind **Octagonal House**, built circa 1861-1862 by Robert A. Terrell, the city’s namesake. This architectural rarity, located on the campus of Southwestern Christian College, was designed to allow for better light and air circulation. It also boasted Kaufman County’s first glass windows and is one of only two octagonal houses remaining in Texas.
Another gem is the **L.E. Griffith House**, built circa 1880 at 805 First Street. Owned by five generations of the same family, this home is a fine example of early Texas architecture and has earned both Texas and national historic landmark status.
