BURKE’S BRIEFS

August 2024

Hello, Wavers! A lot sure has taken place since our Waves July issue published. Hurricane Beryl, which we first thought was going to make landfall around the Texas/ Mexico border, hit us hard! Our hearts go out to everyone affected.

One thing that Hurricane Beryl proved to us once again is what a great community we live in. People helping people. So many restaurants, churches, and charities provided free food and other items. We are GALVESTON STRONG and we always will be. We are so proud to call Galveston our home.

We want to thank the brave and hard-working power linemen who traveled from all parts of the country and worked tirelessly to get our electricity restored. You are the best!

Don’t Mess with Texas Tortoises

Although Texas is home to a dozen species of water turtles, we can claim only one true tortoise, the Texas Tortoise. This bulky ten-inch critter’s natural range includes northern Mexico and south Texas from the Rio Grande up to San Antonio. They are gentle, land-dwelling herbivores with their favorite food being the fruit of the prickly-pear cactus.

They are tough little guys as they are able to survive in the extreme environment of the south Texas scrubland. Once numbering in the hundreds of thousands, its populations have declined drastically in the past fifty years. Habitat loss, collection for the pet trade, low reproductive rate, and disease have all left their mark leaving this guy listed as a threatened species in 1977. Further decline could result in them being listed as endangered. Many tortoises are crushed by cars as they make their way across highways like slow-moving rocks. It is estimated that there may be only about 5000 mature adults living in their natural Texas habitat.

Too many tortoises are picked up by people and taken in as pets. It is illegal in Texas to collect or own one and doing so only hurts conservation efforts. Once taken into captivity they can never be released back into the wild. It is felt that once exposed to the organisms found in a human’s environment, re-release could risk the natural population to disease.

If a Texas Tortoise is seen on a road, it is okay to stop and safely move it off the highway. Do not move him too far down the road as

he must stay close to his home range. Scientists believe that these tortoises are so dependent on their own territory that they may die if moved long distances. If found in a city, call a local wildlife rehabber or animal shelter so they can try to return the tortoise to its home territory. If you are lucky enough to see one in the wild, snap a picture and leave him alone.

The Texas Tortoise Monitoring Project was established in 2008 to help track populations and manage and protect their populations. Most of the work is done at the Palo Alto National Battlefield Park in Brownsville. This area has a healthy population of tortoises that allows researchers to collect abundant data on the species. Some tortoises are tagged and then equipped with GPS radio transmitters to track their movements and feeding behaviors.

The Green Wildlife Center in Texas has a four-phase program to help reduce the decline of this species. Phase 1 is to establish breeding populations in secure native lands. Phase 2 concentrates on data collection, medical

screening of individuals, and tracking found specimens. A captive breeding program has been established with the goal of re-introducing young tortoises back into safe natural environments. Individuals selected for this program are ones that cannot be returned to the wild but can produce offspring to re-populate the species.

We should never be tempted to keep one as a pet and if we see one crossing a highway, safely pull over and help him get out of harm’s way.

Help save one of our iconic species. Extinction should never be an option for any creature that makes Texas their home.

Phase 3 is selecting the best sites to relocate individuals to the best habitats for their success. Phase 4 tracks the longterm success of individuals in the program to learn if they are surviving and making babies of their own.

The survival of the Texas Tortoise depends on our ability to protect their habitats but also relies on the efforts of fellow Texans to act responsibly if we encounter one of these awesome reptiles.

HEROES and ZEROES

One thing that Hurricane Beryl proved to us once again is that our energy providers care absolutely nothing about us. The one thing they do care about is their bottom line. It’s all about their profits. Any corners they can cut to maximize their profits they will do. They have proved this to us time after time. When will our politicians hold them accountable? When will they demand that they provide us with the service we all pay for? We have one of the worst power grids in the nation.

When it gets cold, we lose our electricity. When the wind blows, we lose electricity. Fix our power grid now! We don’t want or believe any of the excuses the energy providers try to spin on us. CenterPointless, you are a ZERO!

A power outage is not just a nuisance, it can be a matter of life and death. They are still counting the number of deaths resulting from households being without power when the temperature hit 95 degrees and people had no electricity.

One thing we do want to recognize is the brave hard-working linemen who worked tirelessly to get our power restored. You deserve all of the praise in the world. We can’t thank you enough. You are true HEROES!

Do we appreciate the linemen who worked long hard hours to get our power up and running?

Yes, we do!

Do we despise CenterPointless Energy who cares abs olutely nothing about us?

Yes, we do!

It is beyond time to fix the issues that cause power outages for long periods at the slightest inclement weather. It is irresponsible. It is dangerous. It is fixable. Let’s all keep the pressure on Centerpoint and hold them accountable for this ridiculousness.

Thank You, Linemen!

ON FITNESS

FOCUS Summer Means Healthy Fruit-Eating Season

I always equate summer with the abundance of fruit in the grocery store. But with our global farming and ability to ship seasonal fruit worldwide, there is really no out-of-season time. However, even with fruit readily available all year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that only about 12% of Americans meet their daily fruit intake. That number is even lower among low-income adults. And that’s a shame since fruits are one of the healthiest and most nutritious foods you can add to your diet. From apples to oranges, there are many different types of fruits, each with unique health benefits.

The current Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend two cups of fruit daily for adults. But which fruits should you be eating for optimal nutrition? Here are six of the healthiest fruits you can eat.

Blueberries

Blueberries are a nutritional powerhouse packed with a ntioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. They’re one of the healthiest fruits you can eat and delicious too! Blueberries are low in calories and high in dietary fiber, making them an ideal snack or addition to your breakfast. Studies show that blueberries are packed with powerful antioxidants, which can help protect your cells from damage and reduce inflammation. Blueberries are also an excellent source of vitamin C, which boosts your immune system and keeps your skin looking healthy. Additionally, blueberries contain a type of flavonoid called anthocyanin, which is known to help improve memory and fight off cancer cells. To get the most out of this nutritional powerhouse, try adding blueberries to yogurt or smoothies, or enjoy them as a healthy snack on their own.

Apples

Pears

P ears are a great addition to any healthy diet. They have great taste and offer a wide range of health benefits. Pears are especially fiber-rich, providing up to 6 grams per medium fruit. Eating enough fiber is essential for proper digestion and maintaining a healthy weight. Pears contain potassium, which helps to regulate blood pressure. In addition, pears are a good source of vitamin C, providing 14% of the daily recommended value.

One of the most impressive benefits of pears is their antioxidant content. The antioxidants found in pears are mainly concentrated in the skin, so eating them with the skin on is important.

A pples are one of the healthiest fruits you can eat! They are a great source of dietary fiber, vitamins A and C, potassium, and antioxidants. Eating an apple a day can help lower cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of heart disease, and help prevent certain types of cancer. Apples also contain beneficial phytonutrients such as quercetin and catechin, which have anti-inflammatory properties. Apples are a great snack that can help satisfy hunger between meals. Enjoy them as is or cooked into your favorite recipes. Apples make a delicious addition to salads, pies, smoothies, and baked goods. Be sure to buy organic apples whenever possible to ensure you’re getting the most nutrients from your fruit.

Oranges

Eating pears can also be a great way to boost energy and stay hydrated. A medium-sized pear provides approximately 17% of the daily recommended amount of carbohydrates, making it an excellent snack for those looking for an energy boost. Additionally, pears are about 84% water, helping to keep you hydrated throughout the day. Be sure to buy fresh pears with the skin still on for maximum nutritional benefits.

Oranges are among the most popular fruits globally and a g reat addition to any diet. They have an incredibly high nutrient content, containing vitamin C, thiamine, folate, potassium, and fiber. Not only are they tasty, but they also provide many essential vitamins and minerals.

Studies have shown that oranges, due to their high levels of antioxidants and polyphenols, may help reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease. They are also excellent for boosting immunity and helping to prevent infections due to their high vitamin C content. Oranges have been linked to reduced inflammation and improved digestive health.

The best way to get the most benefit from eating oranges is to consume them whole with the skin around each section still on. This way, you can maximize the nutrients and fiber. Oranges can be enjoyed as a snack,

added to salads, used as a garnish, or juiced for a refreshing drink.

Grapefruit

Grapefruit is an incredibly healthy and delicious citrus fruit packed with vitamins and nutrients. Rich in vitamin C, this vibrant fruit also provides a good source of dietary fiber, potassium, vitamin A, B vitamins, and lycopene. In addition, grapefruit contains antioxidant-rich phytochemicals that can help protect the body from damage caused by free radicals.

Grapefruit has a variety of health benefits, including improved immunity and digestive health. Studies have shown that the antioxidants found in grapefruit can help reduce inflammation and improve heart health. Additionally, eating grapefruit has been linked to weight loss due to its low-calorie content and ability to fill you up.

melons to bring to a hot afternoon outdoor event. Everyone enjoys a nice slice of watermelon. My horse, Flash, rest his sweet soul, loved his weekly watermelon during the summer months.

When selecting a grapefruit, look for one that is firm and heavy for its size and has a fragrant aroma. The color should be yellow or pink; the latter indicates that it is sweeter than the former. To maximize its nutritional content, eat it raw or add it to smoothies and salads. When stored properly in the refrigerator, grapefruit can last for several weeks.

Watermelons

Sweet and hydrating, watermelons are nature’s electrolyte drink. The vitamin lineup is impressive for watermelon, with carotenoids and lycopene, and is excellent for ocular, heart, and cancer prevention. And there are so many ways to enjoy the fruit. You can freeze sliced watermelon and blend it for a refreshing smoothie or slice water-

What about buying organic?

We have many choices when it comes to organic and conventionally grown fruits, be they fresh, frozen, or dried. Nutritionally, there is not enough difference to choose one over the other, though consumers might select organic for farming practices and environmental impact. The US has regulations on pesticide use, but some fruits tend to have more residual pesticides than others, and it is always recommended that you wash fruits thoroughly before eating.

The list of healthy fruits could really go on and on. Don’t feel like you should limit yourself to just these six. Adding more fresh fruit to your diet can improve your overall diet quality and may lower your risk of developing several health conditions, including heart disease and certain cancers.

Try keeping a variety of fruits stocked in your kitchen. This is an easy and delicious way to protect your health and boost your nutrient intake.

Living Walls & Screens

Dutchman’s Pipe Vine

They say good fences make good neighbors, and nowhere is that more true, than on an island!

Galveston is open and inclusive and just a great place to live. However, a person still needs some privacy! This can be hard to come by with small lots and close neighbors.

A great solution that is also beautiful is a living wall or screen.

There are two basic ways to achieve this:

• An evergreen vine on a structure, or

• A living wall of evergreen shrubs

This month we’ll discuss the vine-covered screen.

For a vine-covered wall or screen:

For this privacy screen, you will need a structure of some sort. It can be a simple wood fence or cattle panels from the farm store. If you are looking for a very tall screen, you could string netting between poles. Really, anything that will support a vine will work.

Now which vine?

There are many options to choose from- flowering, scented, evergreen, or deciduous. It really depends on your taste and how much work you want to put into it. Confederate Star Jasmine blooms in the early summer with a wonderful fragrance and is evergreen. So is Carolina Jessamine (most call it jasmine) except with yellow flowers in early spring and fall. These two can be combined for a long flowering season. Both grow very well in the island climate.

Other options:

• Chocolate Vine

• Cross vine

• Dutchman’s Pipe Vine

• Peggy Martin Roses

• Bougainvillea (sensitive to a freeze and will die back to the roots)

• Lady Banks Roses (yellow and white)

• Coral vine

You could even mix a climbing annual with an evergreen vine, such as morning glories planted with Confederate Star Jasmine if you wanted flowers all summer.

Once the structure is in place and the vines are planted, there isn’t a lot of upkeep needed. Simply wrap the new growth around the supports to keep it going up and clip any dead branches out.

This living screen will provide privacy and enjoyment for you and a happy habitat for butterflies!

Fun Facts Historical Galveston

Galveston Through The Decades

1900-2000

The Island that is two miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico, at 29°18’ north latitude and 94°47’ west longitude, is Galveston. My favorite island city! It is fifty miles from Houston and is the southern end of Interstate Highway 45.

History

Let’s take a glimpse of Galveston Island through the decades! The turn of the century would bring many wonders to the Island.

1910’s - The Seawall

The first steps in the building of the seawall began on September 7, 1901. The Texas State Legislature approved an act providing for the construction of the seawall after the 1900 storm. The fight to save the island from future storms had begun. The residents joined in by buying bonds to support the construction. Fun Fact: One of the engineers brought in was Brigadier General Henry M. Robert (1837-1923). He wrote Robert’s Rules of Order, still used today in meetings throughout the world.

The Galveston–Houston Electric Railway was established in 1911 and ran between Galveston and Houston. Construction started on March 28, 1910, and the last spike was driven into the ground on October 19, 1911. The Inter Urban (as locals called it) averaged 1 million passengers a year during its twenty-five-year service. A one-way ticket cost $1.25; a round trip was $2. Fun Fact: The railway was recognized as the fastest interurban line.

1920’s - The Plague

Fear gripped Galveston Island in the summer of 1920. Galveston reported eighteen cases of bubonic plague in humans. Twelve proved fatal. Knowing the fleas on the rats were the problem, Galveston officials immediately launched an anti-plague campaign, which they called a “War on Rats”. The same fleas were biting people! Fun Fact: On an average day, five or six hundred rats were collected for a total of 46,623 rats. The last plague-infected rat was captured on May 29, 1922.

1930’s - Fort Crockett

During the First World War, Fort Crockett served as a US Army artillery training center. Troops bound for France were trained in the use of several types of artillery. During the early 1930s, Fort Crockett housed the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) 3rd Attack Group. The 3rd Attack Group was the only USAAC group devoted solely to attack aircraft. During the Second World War, focus was placed on defense against German U-boats. Fun Fact: Fort Crockett also served as a German prisoner-of-war camp.

1940’s - The Balinese Room

The name was changed to the Balinese Room in 1942. The pier was also extended to 600 feet. The Balinese Room’s private back room was equipped with the most modern gambling equipment. The Texas Rangers set up shop in a hotel near the club and raided the casino often. But their efforts were thwarted by the length of the pier, known as the “Rangers Run”. By the time they ran down to the tail end of the long narrow club, tables, cards, and chips had disappeared into secret wall and floor pockets. Fun Fact: The band, which sat at the entrance, would strike up the song “The Eyes of Texas” upon the arrival of law enforcement.

1950’s -Sacred Heart Church

In 1959, the Vatican permitted the Most Reverend Wendelin J. Nold, fifth bishop of the Galveston Diocese, to name a cathedral of convenience in the city of Houston. In Galveston, he chose Sacred Heart Church, built in 1911, to serve as co-cathedral and installed an episcopal chair. Fun Fact: Both cathedrals are co-equal in rank permitting full pontifical ceremonies to be held in Houston, as well as Galveston.

1960’s-Texas Maritime Academy

The Texas Maritime Academy, Galveston College, and the Marine Biomedical Institute were established in the early 60’s. Founded in 1962, The Texas A&M Maritime Academy is one of six maritime academies in the United States. Fun Fact: It is the only maritime academy located on the Gulf Coast.

1970’s-Super Slide

Here is something a little different. I remember as a kid sliding down a super slide like this. I thought we used old oyster sacks to slide down. Tons of fun! I know the Island had the concrete water slide on which you sat on a foam mat. I was lucky enough to have ridden the slide! I hope you were too!

The Galveston Arts Center

Beginning in 1971, the Galveston Arts Center, with the help of the Galveston County Cultural Arts Council, Inc., began to offer quality programs that people enjoyed. They featured exhibitions, art education, and public festivals.

1971-The Rosenberg Library

In 1971, the Rosenberg Library was expanded adding the Moody Memorial Wing. This doubled the floor space creating a children’s library, a history center, museum space, and later, a computer lab. Fun Fact: In 1976, The Strand was placed on the National Landmark Register

1980’s-George Mitchell

As the clock struck 1980, the city formed the Seawall Beautification Committee. Their job was to improve Seawall Drives’s appearance. The vision of one of the city’s most revered champions, George P. Mitchell was about to change everything!

A Galveston native and a graduate of Texas A&M- Galveston, the renowned oilman, entrepreneur, and inventor of fracking decided that his hometown was worthy of his financial investment. He began to funnel money into what would eventually become Galveston’s Downtown Historic District. His money repaired the Victorian commercial buildings on The Strand transforming them into a center of arts, shopping, and private residences. At the time of his death in 2014, George Mitchell had provided over $300 million to the city through his

restoration and rebuilding efforts. Fun Fact: His father’s name is Savvas Paraskevopoulos. He changed it to Mike Mitchell preferring a shorter name to write.

1987 - Galveston Bay Foundation

Galveston Bay is, by definition, an estuary—a semi-enclosed coastal body of water that has a free connection with the open sea which allows seawater to mix with fresh water from the land.

In the case of Galveston Bay, it is where fresh water from the Trinity and San Jacinto Rivers and the extensive bayous and creeks mixed with the salty water of the Gulf of Mexico.

The mission of The Galveston Bay Foundation is to preserve and enhance Galveston Bay as a healthy and productive place for generations to come. Fun Fact: Galveston Bay is only 9 feet deep.

1990’s

Thousands of people come to the island every year to take advantage of our cruise terminals. In December of 1989, Galveston began offering day cruises. It was a success! The $2 million Galveston Cruise Ship Terminal was dedicated at the beginning of the year. $1.4 million of the project was financed through a Tax Reinvestment Zone. Much of Galveston’s business today comes from cruise passengers. Fun Fact: By 2001 the Port of Galveston ranked number seven among U.S. ports serving the Caribbean region.

Well, we made it through an entire century of Galveston’s history! And we only took a glimpse. If you love history like I do, visit the Rosenberg Library.

Buck’s West Venados Cantina Tex-Mex Restaurant

Big BITES

here is just something special about Tex-Mex food that gives me comfort in times of stress. I guess that is what took me to this west-side restaurant and bar in the small resort community of Jamaica Beach.

Having endured several days of stifling heat and discomfort from Hurricane Beryl, I needed a Tex-Mex fix.

The dictionary defines Tex-Mex as a regional American cuisine derived from the culinary creations of Texans of Mexican heritage. To me, it is pure comfort food. A sizzling comal of smoking fajitas, enchiladas as hot as lava swimming in red chili and molten yellow cheese, refried beans, crispy tacos, I love all of it!

I knew I was going to like this restaurant when I turned into their parking lot off of the busy highway. Situated in a small strip center, you enter via a large and welcoming elevated patio area. Several patrons were sitting under umbrellas drinking frozen margaritas as I passed by. As we entered, we were greeted by a friendly young lady who escorted us to our table.

The restaurant is large, open, and airy. Multiple televisions line the walls along with artwork and hanging pinatas. Huge ceiling fans stir the air, and a large bar to one side completes the scene. It is pleasant and welcoming.

I had held off visiting this restaurant. Early reviews were spotty and I tend to stay in my east side neighborhoods. That all changed seemingly overnight when they installed Mr. Carlos Mauricio Chinchilla Martinez as chef. Suddenly, local media came alive with a torrent of positive reviews and I knew I had to visit and see what was happening.

I was not disappointed. Chef Carlos, as he prefers to be called, has put together a rather simple menu consisting of appetizers, quesadillas, enchiladas, tacos, fajitas, a single salad, and a soup and that is about it. Simple, easy to navigate, but every dish honed to perfection.

First impressions are always important. We were pleased with the physical layout and the menu, but what about the food? We started with complimentary chips and salsa and I was immediately pleased. The chips were fresh and light. The two complimentary salsas were excellent. They offered a traditional red salsa and an especially good tomatillo-based green salsa. Both were served warm. The green salsa came with a warning regarding the spice level, but I found it to be absolutely perfect. One of the best I have ever eaten!

I skipped over the appetizers and went for the main course. I may reconsider on another visit as I am told the chicken wings are not to be missed. Maybe a happy hour on their patio with a frozen margarita or a frosty Dos Equis and a couple of appetizers is in order on that future visit.

I didn’t mention they have a complete bar and a large menu of specialty drinks. I am certain that, weather - permitting, they have a lively happy hour on their large and pet-friendly patio.

I opted for the beef and chicken fajitas. Served sizzling hot, they were excellent! The beef was of obvious high quality cooked medium and extremely tender. The chicken had a pleasant char-grilled flavor and was equally good. Both were served smoking on a hot comal with caramelized onions and a medley of green and red peppers. The accompaniments included my requested flour tortillas, a very good pico di gallo, guacamole, sour cream, rice, and a small serving of flavorful charro beans. It was overall an excellent meal and enough for one hearty person or split between two smaller appetites.

My dining partner had the enchiladas. A large plate with rice and refried beans and three large enchiladas immersed in a sea of molten yellow cheese. A Houston native and lifelong Texas resident, he devoured the entire plate and pronounced it excellent! I caught a couple of glimpses before it all disappeared and it looked fantastic. My only comment is I would have requested some chopped onions and a little cilantro for a topping, but that is a personal preference that I am certain they would accommodate.

think it will be my choice next visit.

A selection of tacos, both soft and crispy, are offered. They have a couple of seafood tacos. Their mahi mahi stuffed tacos are not often seen locally and are mentioned in several reviews as being exceptional. Definitely worth a try on another visit.

There are a couple of half-pound burgers which I am certain are good, but I came for the Tex-Mex!

Several desserts are offered including a tres leches cake and Blue Bell ice cream. There is also a bread pudding (with the boudin enchiladas I detect a trace of Louisiana here).

A children’s menu keeps it all family-friendly and affordable.

In summary, this is a locally owned chef-driven Tex-Mex restaurant that delivers on all levels. Affordable and friendly. Well worth the short drive from the seawall and a real gem for the residents of the western portions of our island. Please give them a try. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Given how much I enjoyed their green salsa, my enchilada choice would have been the green chile and chicken enchiladas which is one of my favorites and will be the next dish I order here.

Others rave about their enchiladas with boudin. A rather strange combination that seems to have a loyal following.

A large selection of various quesadillas takes a portion of the menu and while I am certain they are excellent, I would pass them up for one of their combination dinners. The ”Speedy Gonzalez“ caught my attention with a green chile enchilada, crispy beef taco, and a beef chalupa. I

Handicapped access is very good as well as a pet-friendly patio.

The Beach Bum

Hey Wavers, I hope everyone made it through the storms with minimal damage. It’s been quite a rollercoaster ride ith po er o tages and ooding o er o tages have definitely impacted o r daily eating habits, not by choice!

Having to adjust my personal menu made me think a lot about food. It’s not like me to have many thoughts in a day, but here is what had me thinking while sitting in the dark...

I love great food but have never really thought about my favorite kinds. Here’s a list of my top ten favorites. This list is not in any particular order (or the healthiest of choices) because I crave different foods from day to day. Bon Appétit, my friends!

It’s estimated that over 3 billion pizzas are consumed each year in the United States. 350 slices eaten each second of every day. Your Bum contributes heavily to these numbers. I am strictly a Meat Lovers guy. If I wanted vegetables on my pizza, I would

The perfect complement to a great hamburger is golden brown French fries. The average American consumes 4 servings per week. That’s 16 pounds of fries per year. Again, I am sure your Bum tops that number. I even have them for breakfast sometimes with my sausage biscuit. Pure heaven.

Steaks come in a variety of cuts & choices. NY Strips, ribeye, filet mignon, etc. It’s interesting to see how Americans like their steak cooked. 11% rare, 23% medium-rare, 13% medium, 16% medium-well, and 24% well done. I can’t imagine well-done steak. It’s un-American I tell ya. Give me a tender fillet mignon, cooked medium-rare with homemade bearnaise sauce over it and you have pure joy.

Another of your Bum’s favorites. One of the many treasures of living in Texas is our great barbeque. We do it the best. I love low and slowcooked smoked meats. I can’t get enough of it. Ribs, beef brisket, smoked chicken, and sausage. Bring it on! Throw in some delicious sides of potato salad and beans and you have a true Texan meal.

Tacos per year. Your Bum accounts for about half of that number. Another beautiful reason to love Texas. You can literally find tacos here 24/7, 365 days per year. I love the food trucks all around the Galveston area. We also have so many terrific family-owned Mexican restaurants.

are eating Mac & Cheese each day. That’s how much we love it. Your Bum can make an entire meal out of Mac & Cheese. I also like it as a side dish, but I am perfectly fine having it as my main course meal.

Lonestar Jukebox and Wide Open Spaces back on the air on KPFT 89.5 Galveston

Indie radio station, KPFT, the only broadcast radio station consistently playing many local artists from the Galveston and Houston area, has announced the return of two legendary DJs and their shows to the airwaves.

Rick Heysquierdo - host of Lonestar Jukebox and Roark Smith - host of Wide Open Spaces will return on Saturdays beginning August 17th (Heysqueirdo) and September 7th (Smith).

“Rick is graciously returning after an absence of 7 years so we’re really looking forward to that. He’ll be on from 10 am til noon on Saturdays followed by Roark Smith from noon til 2 pm. Roark won't start until September after our fund drive from Aug 17–25th”, said KPFT General Manager, and host of the Grateful Dead devoted show Deadbeat, Sandy Weinman.

Three-time Texas Music DJ of The Year, Roark Smith, has been off and on KPFT since the station acquired its new building on

Caroline St in Houston in 2022 and will continue spinning his dynamic mix of locals, state, and deep-cut international artists. Lonestar Jukebox, one of KPFT’s highest-rated shows hosted by Rick Heysquierdo, has long been an audience favorite and has continued its brand through Heysquierdo’s website, LoneStarJukeBox.media and will contain his trademark blend of stories, music, and interviews.

“Since I took a hiatus and moved to Mexico, I think I’m really reliving the roots I grew up with in Houston. So not only is Lone Star Jukebox still going to be what people expect, rootsrock, country, Tex-Mex, it's going to have some influence and some stories from some famous Mexcanos,” Heysquierdo said.

KPFT has a signal booster on top of the Bryan Museum in Galveston extending its main Houston signal to the island. The Houston 90.1 signal becomes available on the FM dial at 89.5 on the Galveston side of the causeway.

arah I certainly validate your stress and frustration. We peacekeepers have a tough time keeping everyone happy, don’t we? In your shoes, I would have a serious discussion with your hubby, reminding him how very brief this time with your son is. Who knows? It might even be your last summer that he is able to come home for a lengthy stay, with or without a girlfriend. And you have to be so careful these days to not burn bridges with your adult children. I’m not sure if you are aware that among this generation of young adults, there is an epidemic in America of parental alienation out there. If we as parents say or do something that they feel is “toxic” or “narcissistic”, they simply write us off or go “no contact” for years or perhaps forever. You have to measure your words and actions with them so very carefully. Perhaps you could ask Sunshine to prepare her vegan meals 2 or 3 times a week for the family and on the other nights when you serve meat, she and Jeremy could go out to eat. And maybe you and ill co ld find one of o r onderf l sports bars on the island to go o t on “dates” to watch the games, have a few drinks, and get away from the kids for a while? Just some suggestions. Always remember...This too shall pass and in the long run, you have strengthened your relationship with your son instead of losing it. Added bonus: Your marriage is better off for it!

i arah It has been worrying me a bit lately I have been agreeing so much with Jan’s advice. That’s a little scary to me. However, your question has gotten me right back on track to where there is going to be no agreement whatsoever.

I really don’t like that your husband Bill is being made the bad guy in this sit ation m firmly a are that children ghosting their parents is a real thing these days. In other words, if you don’t kiss their rear end, they will pull away and have no contact with you. The real culprit in this situation is your son, Jeremy. He showed up to your home unannounced with Sunshine/ Moonbeam in tow. He knew going in that Sunshine/Moonbeam and your husband would not get along with each other. He knew there would be friction and turmoil between the two of them. Did that stop him from bringing her home with him? No, it did not! Sunshine/Moonbeam should have been happy for a place to stay. It is obvious her own parents didn’t want her around. It’s obvious as to why. She should have shown appreciation to you and your husband for bringing her into your home. Yet, she was far from grateful.

I am 100% in your husband’s corner on this subject. Your son created a horrible situation by bringing that entitled nitwit to your home. I would have thought that you would have taken your husband’s side on this issue. You didn’t. Think about how that makes him feel. If your son chooses to ghost yo over this, then he needs to gro p and find some common sense Tell Bill I’m on his side all the way.

ny Grand pera o se aficionado orth their weight in iconic rainbow-hued plastic storage containers is certainly familiar with DIXIE’S TUPPERWARE PARTY

- the hilarious confection created by performance artist [and American actor, writer, comedian, and drag performer] Kris Andersson as Dixie Longate - who made her third appearance on the island last August. We were fortunate enough last month to grab tickets for Kris’s newest show CHERRY BOMBS AND BOTTLE ROCKETS which is currently touring the US.

For the uninitiated, Andersson’s role as “Dixie” began as a dare in 2004 from a friend to sell Tupperware while in drag. Andersson accepted the challenge and went on to become Tupperware’s number-one sales representative in both the United States and Canada while developing the show and in 2008 was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance.

As for BOTTLE ROCKETS, I’ll let Dixie describe it herself: “Do you ever wake up one morning at 2:30 in the afternoon to discover that there is a global pandemic which makes your kids’ schools shut down so you have to raise them yourself? What the hell kind of nonsense is that? It’s in these moments of crisis that yo really find o t hat yo re made of f there s one thing e all have in common, it’s that we are fundamentally different people than we were just two years ago. What have you learned? What did you try? How did you cope? How heavy was your recycle bin from all the empty bottles? When life seems to get too crazy and the world is crapping on your lawn, it’s time to strap on your big-girl boots, grab your breakfast vodka and light off a few CHERRY BOMBS & BOTTLE ROCKETS. There’s nothing better than walking into your new self with a bang!”

While not quite as uproariously funny as her Tupperware Party - which we left from exhausted due to laughing so hard - it was still an absolutely fabulous afternoon of entertainment. If you want to dive deeper into this incredibly talented performer, give Dixie Longate and/ or Dixie’s Tupperware Party a Google. My sage advice - Do not miss the next time Dixie graces Galveston with her presence.

There s no do t a reat an eo e ha e heard Seabrook, Texas singer-songwriter and lead guitarist, Christian Weigand perform. From Galveston to Houston since 1985, Weigand has been playing music in various capacities from church groups to pirate bands to solo acoustic (sometimes with his daughter, singer/songwriter Avery Weigand) to funk, blues, and alternative rock bands. Currently, Weigand is the lead guitarist and co-founder, along with Ashley and Heather Hennessy, of the alternative rock group, The Band Hennessy, as well as a solo performer under his own name performing both original and cover songs from multiple genres, and a member of the Texas Renaissance Festival pirate-themed band, The Pride Of Bedlum.

Born in 1969 in Houston, Weigand has lived in Seabrook since 1996 and performed everywhere from live music venues in Galveston like Sharky’s, Drunken Monkeyz, Bubba’s, and 1877 On The Strand to Palapa’s and Kipp Rose in Kemah to the infamous rock and alternative clubs throughout Houston like Rudyard’s, Fitzgerald’s and The White Oak Music Hall. Through the ’80s, ‘90s, and 2000s, Weigand enjoyed popularity as a member of bands like Pearl Murray and the Jewels, Nightwatch, and Rumblefish. It was at White Oak, however, that The Band Hennessy performed, opening for Houston’s popular Blue October, after winning local 94.5 The Buzz radio station’s 2018 “Next Big Thing” talent search. Hennessy released a single, “No Stopping Us” and was signed to Blue October’s record label Up/Down Records. Not long after, however, band personnel issues and the pandemic slowed their (and everyone else’s) music industry progress somewhat. The band is still highly active with their song played periodically on 94.5 along with many other original recordings available across all digital music platforms.

Though Weigand performs over 125 shows a year in the area most people probably don’t know that deep down, according to Weigand himself, he’s a blues guy. Upon hearing Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Texas Flood album in 1983, Weigand immediately began studying the blues genre, learning the licks and styles of his favorites like Vaughan, Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Eric Clap-

ton and many early classic American blues music innovators like Elmore James and Robert Johnson. So entrenched in the blues was Weigand he even made a trip to the world-renowned “crossroads” in Mississippi, where legend has it 1930s American blues artist Robert Johnson “sold his soul to the Devil” for respect, fame, and money in the music business.

“My father was a singer. He used to take me up and d own Washington Avenue when I was 19 years old to all the blues clubs. Club Hey Hey and Pat & Petes Bon Ton Room. When I was about 22 I went to the crossroads in Mississippi where Robert Johnson sold his soul. It was about midnight and I was a little nervous. I played Robert Johnson’s Cross Road Blues for about a minute and then I said ‘Let’s get the hell outta here’. It started getting creepy. We drove about 45 minutes south of there that night where there is a Baptist Church and a graveyard where Robert Johnson is buried. I took my bottle-neck slide and left it there.”

As though he weren’t busy enough playing music full time in 2 bands

co ple of things to do hen fishing this rig that c ts do n on tangles the first is to slo the rig do n st before it hits the ater by th mbing the spool This will straighten your rig out and away from you and short-circuit a tangled mess when it hits the water. The second is to use a fast, steady retrieve speed. A jigging motion on the retrieve many times will cause the rig to tangle. Using these t o steps ill give yo more prod ctive fishing time dolphins seldom eat tangles; they’re not “natural”.

Several things to keep in mind. Dolphin can be just about anywhere offshore

When built as in the illustration with the short leg reversed, it will positively help keep the jigs apart on the retrieve. To get the three strands of mono into the sleeve, a size bigger than those at the jig heads will have to be used. The bulbing of the mono ends is carefully done by melting the very end of the mono strands. Do this with the ends a couple of inches outside of the single barrel sleeve. Cool them and pull them into the end of the sleeve before crimping eave both ends of the sleeve belled as sho n, this lets the “bulbed” mono set in them plus it gives a curved end for the leg to exit. he color combinations li e to se are pin chartre se and chartre se ith matching curly tails. Team Turtle

To is and riends who find summer a little boring - have you ever thought about joining “Team Turtle”?

What? Let’s have a little fun this summer and look at the possibilities of uniting together for a worthy cause. Galveston is home to an endangered species, the Kemp Ridley Sea Turtle, the world’s most endangered sea turtle, which nest in the western Gulf of Mexico.

The Galveston and surrounding coastline is a known hot spot for these turtles to lay their eggs, returning every year to do so. Each season, the Sea Aggie Turtle Patrol finds about a dozen nests on the upper Texas coast.

A recent article stated that they are looking for volunteers to be on the lookout for these turtles and their nests. The lookout extends from the tip of Bolivar Peninsula to South Padre Island. Researchers are always looking for team members (volunteers) to make observations to keep accurate information on the population of this endangered species.

The Gulf of Mexico is home to 5 species of endangered sea turtles, including the Kemp’s Ridley. The Kemp’s Ridley is the Texas state sea turtle and the smallest and most critically endangered species. Kemp’s Ridley’s nest along the Texas and Mexico shoreline. The Kemp’s Ridley population today is a fraction of the population recorded in the 1940s. Nesting habitat is being lost to sea level rise, erosion, and urbanization.

Cookin’Column

st is here, dear eaders, and it’s still time for those wonderful patio or backyard cook-outs here on our Island. Now, I bet you did not know that Bunny has a very sweet boyfriend. Yes, I do, and I call him my “Boo”! Well, my Boo happens to be a Master Chef when it comes to making the most mouth-watering, fall-off-the-bone, scrumptious, smoked ribs you will ever put in your mouth. So, after a generous amount of arm twisting, I was able to get him to give up his secret recipe which is more of a process than anything else. It may sound involved but it truly is super simple. I promise if you follow this recipe and process to a “T”, you will see what I mean.

BOO’S BODACIOUS SMOKED RIBS

Ingredients

1 slab of pork ribs, cut in half

Barbecue rub (recommended Wild

Bill’s TX Select Seasonings Sweet Ass BBQ Rub - see picture)

1 12 oz. jar Patak’s Major Grey

Chutney (see picture, can be found with International foods at Kroger)

Directions

After the slab of ribs has been cut in half, generously rub both sides of each half with the BBQ rub. In the meantime, in a large stockpot which is tall enough to cover the ribs with water, bring water to a fast boil. When the water is boiling, drop each half of the ribs into the water. Allow them

to boil for an hour and 20 minutes. Remove from water to a platter or board to rest for 5 minutes or so while you start the grill on medium heat.

Put the ribs on the top rack. Grill each side for 5 minutes each. As soon as you take them off the grill, generously brush the chutney all over the surface of the ribs. Slice and serve. Yum!

*Note: You can also brush chutney on ribs while grilling, but Boo says he was losing too much of the chutney that way.

Bunny feels like a good dinner with ribs isn’t complete without her special and easy, peasy potato salad. It’s a version that is done with small red potatoes and it’s really good served when it’s freshly made at room temperature but equally great after it has been chilled in the refrigerator. I’m not sure where I got this recipe or if I just came up with it on my own. The boyfriend loves it as do most of my friends and family. Try it and see what you think.

BUNNY’S FAMOUS POTATO SALAD

*Note: You can adjust amounts to your liking for however many people you are serving. Below, I’m listing enough for about 6-7 servings.

Ingredients

9 - 10 red potatoes, boiled until tender

3 - 4 green onions sliced approximately 1 cup Ranch dressing approximately 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1/3 cup bacon bits, more if desired Red wine vinegar, to taste black pepper

cayenne pepper, optional

After the potatoes are boiled and have cooled somewhat, cut them into bite-size pieces in a large bowl. (I like to keep the peels on.) Add the chopped onions and about 1/3 cup of bacon bits. Add enough Ranch dressing to cover all veggies. Sprinkle on about 3 tablespoons of red wine vinegar or more, if desired. Add mayonnaise to blend all together. Add pepper and mix well. Cayenne pepper can be added for an extra “kick”, but not too much. Enjoy! bits,
